      She speaks to the Jury because the Jury is contained of your average people like you and I. Jury duty they call it. Which is a huge kink in the system because many terms used in the legal system are things they don't know and can easily be misinterpreted. What she does is just brilliant in terms of getting through to these people. Who really might just work at a gas station or something.

      Around 10'50 - and onwards : "Believing in unrealistic things". Like ...say 90 percent of the public in countries like the poorest ones, the religious ones, USA, Russia and the most militaristic and political ones... ? :) I guess that alone then is the diagnosis of the "average mind" or the "democracy voter". Sokrates, Sam Harris and Douglas Murray will nod and agree I think. The latter two being alive selling books will not admit it . But they know.

    • @fahadus

      The histrionic one is the bigger issue for them. They're trying to establish that she's the kind of a person to write that article and destroy Depp on purpose.

    • @tcrijwanachoudhury
      @tcrijwanachoudhury 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's literally not how it works ffs This argument is senseless. People with BPD *are* mentally ill (especially if untreated), if that didnt effect their behavior well they.. wouldn't be, catch my drift? Calling it an excuse implies the individual has more autonomy and order than they actual do. It is called a disorder for a reason.

    • @tcrijwanachoudhury
      @tcrijwanachoudhury 2 ปีที่แล้ว +415

      This is not a way to excuse her actions btw, just to point out you and a lot of people are fundamentally ignorant about this illness.
      We need to find a middle, understand that offering empathy to those with mental illness isn't necessarily the same as excusing their behaviour.

    • @NS-xt5wv
      @NS-xt5wv 2 ปีที่แล้ว +579

      @@tcrijwanachoudhury I offer empathy only to those who work on their flaws and don’t project them onto others. I am very familiar with this disorder and I stand by my reminder that her having BPD doesn’t justify her actions, just like serial killers’ crimes can’t be justified by their antisocial personality disorder (just an exaggerated example to prove my point if you happened to misunderstand me).

    This is mind boggling. Im a psych student and Personality disorders are deeply complicated. The idea that a psychologist is going to be able to explain what a personality disorder is, and do it briefly and clearly for a court is insane. Obviously she is skipping over a lot, but wow, very impressive. It’s enough information to get the essence across, but it’s also important to understand what the attorney asked her. He basically asked, “so how does a watch work, and please explain it quickly and clearly for non watch makers?” And then she did!!!! That’s freaking amazing!

      If I can offer any advice to you guys, I would recommend narrowing down which specific area/areas you are interested in most, and research what job you would eventually like to do. Then actually go either speak to people in that job or shadow them to see if that’s what you really want. I have always been interested in psychology. It’s literally fascinating to me to figure out how why people do what they do and how they think and behave. I wanted to be a counselor, so that’s what I did. Have my masters degree in social work actually, which was nice because there are SO many different areas you can work in with social work. Some clinicians prefer hiring a social work degree over just a counseling degree. I’ve considered eventually getting a doctorate, but lately I’ve been thinking not to because my last six years I ended up being a stay at home mom instead. Lol. I still research psychology all the time though! It’s just so interesting to me. One area I’m always looking into is personality disorders actually. I really recommend everyone become accustomed with those actually, because everyone will encounter one in your life eventually. Before this lady testified I assumed Amber had a personality disorder just from listening to her tapes and hearing about behaviors of hers. Mostly the tapes though. I guessed most likely borderline, but thought possible narcissistic or histrionic personality disorder. This psychologist is incredible. You can just tell. They found such a gem. I couldn’t believe Ambers female lawyer! She was so unprofessional! With the muffins nonsense. Just grasping for straws. Anything to try to make her look bad. It’s ridiculous. She still kept her cool and stayed professional though and looked so much better than that ridiculous lawyer.

If she hit the man she wanted and chose to hit him. There weren't little voices in her head saying "heifer grab a pan or pop him upside the head". If he walked away he did exactly what I've told my own sons to do and a controlling narcissistic abuser can't handle that level of maturity because by ending an argument in peace means you're taking control back. As a DV survivor since childhood through majority of adulthood, you recognize the real. These two are toxic together and did the best thing. End marital ties. Now go heal.

In America it is more accepted that someone talks vividly and show off, then in for example Scandinavia or Japan, where it is more seen as comical or pretenciousness. Yet there are so big mixes of people in America from all over the world, that there will naturally be parts of the audience who sniffs at her show :)
      It could be due to career goals or due to just idealism, or enthusiasm of one's profession, probably a combination that she gets so excited. If I was to be direct I'd say the shrink is a bit hyperactive but that is in her case something that has turned out good- more energy, more career potential.
      In Scandinavia the doc would not have been allowed (the judges would correct her immediately and told her to calm down and stick to the questions with shorter answers). So this is a kind of funny freak show to watch for people here in north Europe. To us quite a lot of americans are pretty freaky in one way or another. @@Dielawn69 that’s fair, it’s great that you personally haven’t been penalized for your mental illness, but again that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t happen and that there isn’t still stigma around BPD. People understand and empathize with mental health but it’s more so with depression, anxiety, eating disorders, illnesses that affect a larger population and directly impact them in some way. That isn’t the case with most mood or personality disorders, I agree mental health is becoming less of a taboo discussion but mental health is multifaceted and it’s difficult to conclude that one disorder is no longer stigmatized just because you haven’t been directly faulted for it, or that because mental health as a whole is being accepted. Can confirm, from a "dated someone with BPD" perspective. I had a short romance / friendship with a woman with BPD who was entirely self-aware and it was actually *me* who ran more of a risk of mistreating *her* because at the time in my life, I was very "hot and cold" about committing to anyone, and she called me out on it and reminded me that "here again gone again" behavior isn't going to work with her BPD. She's happily married now in the years since and I think in the case of BPD, self-awareness really helps with relationships: it helps both people steer clear of BPD-caused feedback loops that result in situations, similar to this JD/AH trial, but it also helps people like me realize how certain behaviors can be just as potentially harmful to the person *with* BPD. In other words, a person with BPD isn't a villain just because they suffer with it, and just because you *don't* have BPD doesn't mean you're not the bad guy in relationships, either. (I left this comment for passers-by who might typically see Emily's comment and roll their eyes out of disbelief, misogyny, or paranoia that their own "person of interest" with BPD is going to "pull an Amber Heard" and who might only believe otherwise if they saw "a man who dated someone with BPD" agreeing.)

    I always hear people saying: "Why did he or she stay so long?" - it's not an easy question for certain people. Let's remember that in order to have a successful abuser, you need to find a good victim that is unwilling to leave. As we can all see in this case, not only she has mental issues but also our Johnny grew up untreated from the childhood and adolescence mental and psychological wounds of a dysfunctional family. Johnny escaped, like many do, from the pain and shame through legal/illegal drugs and alcohol. Sweeping our inner struggles under the rug it's simply an illusion. The 'out of sight, out of mind' kind of thinking is not healthy. Many of us had dysfunctional families growing up. It's definitely not our fault, however once you have the means of getting help, you must address these issues! It's very important for our own health and it helps us to make good choices in life. I have no doubt that Johnny fell in love with Amber's outer beauty and missed the signs of an abuser. Great lesson for all of us. Unfortunately, for many of us is already too late as we recognize this type of behavior in our own skin. Sad but true.

She does have traits but I don't agree with the full diagnosis. I experienced trauma and due to that I formed BPD. I have always been kind and loving but lashed out in fear of abandonment. I had all nine traits and I hate it that you only have to have five to have BPD. In my mind, its not right. But anyway, you are right about the stigma. Amber is vicious and cruel. I am not like her.

      @@sayitaintso9576 One often finds overlap in Cluster B personality traits in a given individual, e.g., someone who meet criteria for Narcissistic Personality Disorder can decompensate to Borderline functioning under conditions creating great distress, or a person w/ BPD can load highly on narcissistic traits as well.
      The common denominators of Cluster B symptoms (and granted, it's not a perfectly consistently taxonomy, but one that's also to a degree a cultural construction/set of decisions by the researchers and advocates in the field based upon sets of research data and clinical experience) are 'counter-social traits'- if one wants to get somewhat psychodynamic in their conceptualization, one can characterize these Cluster B traits as frequent, even chronic dysfunctional behaviors that serve to control, exploit, or aggress against others (or even oneself) as defenses against the anxiety, psychological hurt, and even response of alarm to one's predominantly unconscious experience of ego deficits in relationship to oneself and others.

    My sister has BPD, and while we don't speak and don't have a relationship anymore, I can vividly remember how she behaves. Watching this trial has been fascinating because Amber seems to exhibit all of the exact same characteristics, and one thing I know for sure about my sister, is that sitting in a courtroom, while a psychologist explained in detail that she had Borderline, would have made her absolutely lose her mind. I've watched a ton of these clips, and in most of them, Amber appears withdrawn, distant, uninterested and unconvinced by whatever is happening in the courtroom at that moment. Watching her in this footage, her eyes are constantly darting around the room, except for when she is visibly trying not to appear too interested, and starts writing furiously. It's extremely clear (in my opinion) that this is by far the most uncomfortable part of the trial so far, if not the only part that has really bothered her. The one thing that people who suffer from BPD fear more than ANYTHING else, is rejection. Having her deepest flaws put on display like this/her psyche analyzed in front of the world is some of the worst punishment she could endure...

      I think in US they can film trials but yes I'm a psychology student also in UK and regardless of what she's done surely her diagnosis is private and confidential, I mean she is wicked but she is mentally ill so it's got to be treated more sensitively. I don't think this is the way, make he take down statement he hit her, get her in major therapy and both of them get on with their lives

      Johnny Depp pushed to have the trial being made public, amber didn't want that.

      Well ultimately in the US, all court cases are open to the public as they are public record. Not all trials are streamed, but it’s becoming more and more common. I appreciate it being public record, but don’t go out of my way to search or sit and read/ watch all cases that become accessible. It’s just different ethnocentrism. Plus, a lot of cold cases are being relooked at because normal citizens are finding things that fell through the cracks many years ago.

      @@ednanonono I try to find info about this online. Would you know where to find this info? I would really love to have some sources when someone attacks me for criticizing JD and his legal team.

    The way that amber spent the entire time doodling, rolling her eyes, and just staring off into space everytime the therapist spoke just really irked me like girl.. how u gonna fake PTSD and then act like that

      I think she may be trying to act like she doesn’t care so that she doesn’t seem vulnerable. Having a diagnosis like this, which is so stigmatized, talked about right in front of you to a courtroom and broadcast to the whole world would probably be mortifying and horrible. Plus she is probably questioning her entire self and identity and I can only imagine how scary a diagnosis like this would be. Idk tho I could be wrong

    I'm a psychiatrist and i totally agree with this forensic psychologist. Seems like a consistent personality evaluation, specially in terms of the histrionic traits, which we can easily seen in this court!

    If Dr Curry was a teacher, id attend her class. Its nice she breaks down what she’s trying to explain for us to understand it better than just saying “its facts. Deal with it” or “if you dont know, look it up later”
