as a woman who has had to live up to inconsistent beauty standards for years before i stopped caring, i have never in my life heard women talk about other women the way looksmaxxers talk about attractive men 😭😭😭
If only this gave these guys some introspection about unrealistic beauty standards but of course not.. I still wish someone would let them know surgeons exist and they don't need to smash their face with a hammer. 😂
the honest truth is men and their looks do not matter, look at jay z…you literally just have to be successful, these type of men are just delusional/in competition with each other.

As a teenage girl with a younger brother, I'd like to thank the looksmaxxing community for encouraging my younger brother to mew. Facial results or not, he talks less.
self improvement is one thing, but this is basically patriarchal male gaze... its men that are caught up in it, they don't all have to look the same to be handsome or desirable.
tbh as someone who's been in recovery for body dysmorphic disorder, u saying that stuff at the end about hoping your face doesn't change because then it wouldnt be your face was really sweet and i think it is genuinely a great affirmation
ive had body dysmorphia ever since i was 7yrs old, growing up in asia and not being slim and skinny. i didnt know you can recover from it??? how? im 22yrs old now and still am working on my body. it affects me and even in my romantic relationships huhuhu
That whole “bone smashing” thing had me thinking of handsome Squidward from SpongeBob. He became handsome by having his face smashed repeatedly by a door. That’s probably where lookmaxxers got the idea from.
yes they got the idea from Spongebob. SO, where did SPOngebob come up with it? Surely they created the idea and its never been done befor 😒😒are you actually a child? I mean u used SPongebob as a reference, my money is on that/
It's really funny how the looksmaxxing "hunter's eyes" massage is what women beauty influencers say *not* to do because it will give you wrinkles. Men over here stretching their facial skin to look prettier, while women over there learn how to emote without engaging any facial muscles to look prettier.
@ville__THIS IN BREAKING NEWS @ville__ must have no life because I see this little troll bot on like everyone’s channels saying the same stupid thing over and over again
What's crazy is that several of these things were told to me as a middle school girl. Like I made myself sleep on my back for years to avoid wrinkles/a lop sided face. It's interesting and sad to see men discovering the same types of pressures. I wish we could just move away from this shit entirely!
Oh my god yes- I never could sleep on my back so I was just like I guess I'll have a lopsided face, but I heard when I was a teen that you have to sleep with a bra on to keep your boobs 'perky'. I had an A cup to begin with but still did it anyway. It was so uncomfortable and I don't even know how I managed for so long
I'm pretty sure doing that "hunter eye" thing will just *_cause_* wrinkles if you keep it up for long enough, it looks like they're stretching out the skin around their eyes lmao
@@bananawitchcraft that's what I was saying! And the sad thing is wrinkles are not bad, the problem is the obsession with wanting to change your face/ body in unhealthy ways excluding the actual good things advised.
We're never gonna move away from it as long as there are men. Men made the world this way for women to keep us small and afraid and catering to them. Now because their toxicity only increases and needs more targets, the most insecure ones are doing it to each other.
by just reading the title, i assumed looksmaxxing was like, taking how you already look and your natural features but leaning into them. like maximizing the look you already have, making you the best version of yourself without trying to change yourself to look like someone else. i thought that sounded kinda cool.i was... wrong
I almost lost my brother to looksmaxxing. He’s not even graduated from highschool yet. No matter how often we tell him he looks great and girls ask him out he still thinks he’s not good enough, and I will never forgive that community for that.
Man I'm so sorry.. it must be hard to be helpless in front of your brother doing this to himself. I mean there is nothing wrong with wanting to care about the way you look but doing it out of self hate? It's so sad and hurtful. These kinds of communities are infernal and sadly the world is so focused on looks these days it's hard to get out of them. I hope your brother can find the confidence in himself to stop looking at this kind of content* and I'm glad he has you around to help him
He sounds like a teen girl obsessed with the Kardashians wanting to dabble in cosmetic surgery. Body Dysmorphia and those insecurities never really go away.
Men discovering a basic concept and giving it a tough sounding name to differentiate it from the way women engage with that basic concept is my favorite type of comedy
Yea they go “I’m looks maxing”… you mean taking better care of you’re hygiene and working out? As if that hasn’t been general advice for probably hundreds of years 😂 Edit: (Obviously not the bone smashing part, that’s insane and probably not as common as other “looksmaxing” strats)
fun fact: i learned a couple weeks ago that the climate your ancestors lived in affects how large your nostrils and nose bridge are. people in colder climates evolved to have smaller nostrils and higher nose bridges so that cold dry air wouldn’t be as painful to breathe, vs people in humid areas evolved to have larger nostrils bc the air is already humid enough for our internal airways. i went to colorado one time and was sick the entire time bc my nose was sniffin in too much dry air, but now i truly appreciate living in a humid place. we just got big noses so we can take in all that good, wet air
Thank you for this. Same with eye shape, people in colder climates have shorter/non-visible bottom eyelids to protect against the cold air and snow. Hair and other body features are also directly adapted to our environments.
@KIRA-bx6zzI don't see the need to be that rude over something like this? I didn't "learn this stuff in 5th grade" either. Not all schools teach the same things. I learned about similar stuff just last semester in a class of mine! My professor talked a lot about what’s called the Bergmann-Allen rule, which says that humans that are from colder climates will have (in general) thicker bodies and shorter limbs to conserve heat, while those in hotter climates will have smaller bodies and longer limbs. Your body isn’t wrong because it isn’t “attractive,” your body is the result of evolution trying to protect you from whatever environment your ancestors grew up in!
The funniest thing about all this is that men had to make up a word that sounds manly for what is essentially self care with extra steps, so that their masculinity isn't threatened

The guy with us had been quiet for a while. Out of nowhere he says “I’m am sorry I haven’t said much, I’m mewing” and I thought that was the funniest excuse for an awkward silence I have ever heard. You wont get a girlfriend by making your jaw sharp, you get a girlfriend by building a nest of grass and dandelions for an injured bumblebee while your crush is watching.
I’ve never read something so accurate. Gentle when gentleness needed. Tough only when needed. Basically be a dynamic and emotionally adaptive person and you will get a girlfriend when the right person connects with you lol
As a woman, its very weird for me to observe the looksmaxxing community bc all the techniques have origins in "looksmaxxing" for women. Mewing, guasha for slim neck and defined jawline (not guasha as a whole obvi), jawline exercises that make you look like a fish? been there done that like 8 years ago and i guarantee they are older than that.
I'm about 99% sure that "looksmaxxing" has been a thing for women for so long that there's not even a particular word for it, it's just kinda ingrained in a lot of the things women do/society expects women to do. I have no doubt it's been a thing for thousands of years :/
I remember hearing women talk about what looksmaxxers (lol) call mewing nearly 20 years ago, to avoid double-chinning in photos, and it wasn't new then either.
Yeah I had a book when I was like 14, with "✨️tips on how to look prettier✨️" that told me how to use makeup, etc. But also the things these looksmaxxing guys say. Like the one in the video talking about how you should walk. The book also said you should never look on the ground, instead look around or straight forward, you should have good posture, it had a lot of exercises etc. So basically looksmaxxing😂

I have a gua sha and use it daily. It actually did help clear my face and reduce puffiness but people are insane if they think a cold rock is gonna change ur jaw structure

As someone who is subscribed to a few different skincare related subreddits, once in a while one of these guys will post in there and it's always so obvious when they do, because they have this unique combination of a) wanting unrealistic results immediately instead of being willing to wear sunscreen every day and implement a regular routine that will improve things slowly over time, b) having wildly self-critical things to say about flaws that are either literally not there or are totally normal (like saying they have awful wrinkles when actually they're 20 with slightly dehydrated skin) and c) disrespecting the knowledge of the people in the sub who have been learning about skincare for years because the vast majority of them are women. I feel bad for them, but they're also awful to the people around them a lot of the time.
Girl, tell me about it. I just watched a short about a guy recommending to use vitamin c and retinol, which yeah good choices, but I had to go in the comments to tell people not to use those 2 together. And ofc they didn't say use sunscreen, so i had to mention that. hard water can ruin your skin tho, i know it from experience. i used to have acne all over my back and went to a dermatologist, we tried everything and in the end as a last resort he suggested i use a filter on the shower head and yeah, my skin stopped breaking out.
What really gets me about all these hyper-fixated beauty standard trends is that some of the things they try to enforce can be unhealthy or damaging to the wrong people. A lot of those jaw exercise devices can damage the TMJ via excessive stress or overextension. TMJ injuries hurt like bastards. Sleeping on your back works great for some people, but it can worsen obstructive sleep problems like sleep apnea, and left side sleeping is actually the most recommended one for people with GERD.
that’s super interesting! i always heard that for heart health, sleeping on your back is best, sleeping on your right side is okay, and sleeping on your left side is harmful
The saddest part of all this is how predatory these influencers are. Kids and young adults are brainwashed into buying their ridiculous products and courses. Props for calling this out Kurtis.
Yeah that community seems unhinged. As someone who was very insecure about their looks when I hit puberty I would’ve most likely fallen into this trap. I got into mewing when I was 14, 5 years ago when it wasn’t mainstream, but that community wasn’t as predatory as it is now, no one was selling fake products and focused mainly on giving actual good advice like taking care of yourself. I grasped whatever knowledge there was and dipped, I see now that it has become a mainstream meme and a shell of what the community was back then. From experience, If you want to honestly hear if mewing and chewing gum works: Yes, it works really well but not in a way you would expect. You’re not going to morph into thomas shelby. Although many changes were caused by puberty, I can confidently say that I can breathe much much better, my teeth have gotten straighter and my facial bone structure has become more prominent. It took a lot of time to see and you still need to exercise and keep a healthy diet to see the changes. So I say mew and take care of yourself, don’t get into the community.

Genuine advice that has helped me achieve body neutrality and general neutrality/positivity on my appearance is basically the end of the video: think of your appearance as an identifier of yourself, not a representation or a number on a scale of attractiveness. People don't actually look at you and judge your appearance that much. There have been studies that show people will find you more aesthetically attractive if they like you. I don't see my friends and think of a number I just go "oh, look, it's my friend!" It's just really helped me to think of my face more like my name or any other neutral identifier of me. Some people don't like their names but that's a different kind of dislike, you know? People don't look at you and think "UGLY" and if they do you shouldn't want to be around them or they did it passively and felt bad. You become more attractive when people like you and from that point on they...don't really think about it. So it doesn't matter anyways. The whole incel basis of this is weird too because like that culture is around getting a girlfriend so there's some level of irony in a married man trying to achieve the same goals. Anyways, people who aren't strangers don't really think about how attractive you are when they see you. They probably just think "oh, look, you're here!"
Bookmarking this on my phone bc you put into words what has helped me work towards body neutrality. The word “identifier” is particularly helpful - it’s really very true! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. 💕
Yeah, my friend used to fall into insecurity when her sensitive skin flared up. She would ask me if she became ugly when we met up, and I was just like, you were you, I didn't even notice those pimples, I saw your face and you looked just the same as ever since I knew you 5 years ago. Haven't know how to describe this but your comment did it beautifully. When you see your friends and loved ones, their new outfits or new hairstyle may complimentary or against their features, but we never rank their physical appearance on a scale. We just be like "Hey, it's you"
I got a lot more comfortable with my looks and my personality when i started thinking "if someone thinks i'm weird/ugly, i dont want to be around them anyways. Why should i change so that they like me, when there are people who like me for who i truely am" Of course it took time (and still does) because we are human and we want to be liked. We need to learn to withstand the feeling of not being liked from someone else and learn that we dont need to change that
We had it bad enough growing up in the 2000s/2010s, but kids today are getting absolutely BODIED by beauty standards and bullshit like “looksmaxxing” from all sides and it has me seriously concerned for adolescents today. the Cillian Murphy analysis reminds me so much of the kdrama My ID is Gangnam Beauty, the main character was so obsessed with looks that she would break down the looks of both friends and complete strangers, list what surgeries they needed/had and rank them on their attractiveness, and it took her several episodes of unpacking her own issues to realise that that's not a thing normal people do and she hadn't even tried to get to know her friends as people. To be honest, I don't see the problem with maxxing trends. It's self-improvement.

The on the nose nature of the term “loolsmaxxing” literally sounds like a joke about this exact phenomenon
The bit about facial proportions and lip tilts or whatever is getting dangerously close to straight up eugenics
fun fact: i learned a couple weeks ago that the climate your ancestors lived in affects how large your nostrils and nose bridge are. people in colder climates evolved to have smaller nostrils and higher nose bridges so that cold dry air wouldn’t be as painful to breathe, vs people in humid areas evolved to have larger nostrils bc the air is already humid enough for our internal airways. i went to colorado one time and was sick the entire time bc my nose was sniffin in too much dry air, but now i truly appreciate living in a humid place. we just got big noses so we can take in all that good, wet air

Influencers are just doing what companies have been doing to kids, young adults, adults and the elderly forever as well. It's just easier now for any random person to reach tons of people today than ever before with their dumb and stupid ideas and get rich quick schemes sadly.
I mean you can make this argument about anybody on social media trying to make money from doing it

They probably just think "oh, look, you're here!"
hey this is a really great perspective on things, thanks for writing it all out like that!
Hey this is a great perspective. Hard to not be focused on how I think I’m perceived and assume the worst!!
We need to learn to withstand the feeling of not being liked from someone else and learn that we dont need to change that
"i think after this video im gonna start intelligencemaxing" is now my favorite sentence

Kurtis, as an autistic man, I can tell you there is definitely a wrong way to walk. According to psychologists, occupational therapists, and autism counsellors, autistic people naturally walk on the flats of their feet with the feet fluted outwards and it fucks up their back. I don't see it, but the number of people I've had scream "FRONT FACING, HEEL TO TOE!" at me has burned it into my brain.

Its so depressing because this obsession with appearance is becoming extremely intense for both men and women and at the end of the day all i can think is "none of us are winning. We're all mutilating our faces and bodies for absolutely nothing."
Ive been "ugly", had plastic surgery and i can report back that people are really nice all of a suden and assign all sort of positive things to me without knowing me, i get health care now whereas before men would rather murder me than give me autonomy over my own body... Just a tip about posture: any position you're sitting or standing in will cause pain after a certain point. Sitting up super straight for a long time will also cause back pain. The best position to be in, is a different position . Switch it up every like 30 minutes. Hang from a pull up bar or tree for 30 seconds a day. It will make a huge difference in pain and posture. Exactly. Immediately screamed phrenology. Yikes!
This needs to be higher! Its not just harmful beauty standards for men, theres a layer of racism built in but hidden behind jargon and outdated racial "science" thats whole purpose was to justify the subjugation of black and brown folks for slavery.
RIGHT 90% of the examples are just blue eyed white guys it’s insane. Beauty can look like anything and the box people are keep trying to fit into/force people into is just eugenics in disguise 😔
Also they used V’s voice from cyberpunk which is really shitty to the voice actor and completely against literally every theme of both the character and the game and I hate it
the Cillian Murphy analysis reminds me so much of the kdrama My ID is Gangnam Beauty, the main character was so obsessed with looks that she would break down the looks of both friends and complete strangers, list what surgeries they needed/had and rank them on their attractiveness, and it took her several episodes of unpacking her own issues to realise that that's not a thing normal people do and she hadn't even tried to get to know her friends as people. And I just wish that people who are hyperfixated on their own appearance and that of others would watch that show cause it has such a good message

I was diagnosed with body dysmorphic disorder a couple years ago and there are many compulsive behaviours that are common with this disorder- such as obsessive mirroring that Kurtis talks about at 40:58 (where you get into a kind of hyper focus, constantly look for flaws, examine every angle of the face, pick at the skin etc.) I am sometimes spending several hours a day in front of the mirror just getting lost in hating my face and everything about it, and it feels like this looksmaxing thing is just undiagnosed BDD. I get really sad when I see more and more people falling into the same destructive patterns as I did, so please if you do, seek help.
No but for real, i feel like the branding of eating disorders and body dysmorphia as 'girly' mental health problems is really fropping a lot of boys and men into really really dangerous waters.
You good?
Makes sense! I'm also worried about the young men and boys who actually buy into the head size theory. The one in 'incel'-communities. BDD is a real diagnosis and these people need help instead of the toxic community they have atm.

I don’t believe it works to “change your looks”, but it feels nice and is massaging :) I got one and it’s nice when I put it in the freezer for a while first.
At various points in ny adolescence as a girl, I did a lot of things that are just feminine versions of this. And the amount of time I spent looking in the mirror and picking myself part led to so much mental anguish. Part of improving my self esteem has been *not* looking in the mirror more than I truly need to. If you stare at anything long enough that you don't love, you will find flaws. I also look a lot like my mom, who I adore. I would never insult her looks. So I can't do it just because they are mine, too.
