Man im boilermaker/welder for 16 years and i discovered this new opd valve man it really stumped me when i usually turn my bbq off from the gas bottle to let the gas bleed out, but just like 15mins ago the bbq kept going once i turned off the main bottle valve. Which is super weird right shouldnt the gas stop. In my head im freaking out like..still am tbh clearly not a boilermakers a5$h0le

Note to welders using oxy-LP for torch cutting! OPD valves can sometimes reduce flow to insufficient levels for heavy cutting and in that case the larger cylinders without OPD are preferable.
(For those not familiar, BBQ cylinders are tapped fora a CGA 510 AKA "POL" thread which is used for welding fuel gases too.)

LP technician here. What you are describing is called an excess flow valve which activates when flow exceeds what is required to operate the appliance typically 200,000 Btu per hour. The excess flow valve is located inside the the type 1 female connector attached to the regulator, not the male connector on the OPD valve on the cylinder.
The OPD valve automatic shutoff used when filling the cylinder is a secondary safety device and is not used as a means of determining cylinder volume. Only the fixed liquid level gauge (commonly mistaken for a bleed valve) is used for measurement when filling the cylinder. The fixed liquid level gauge consists of a dip tube extending inside the cylinder and a bleed screw all part of the OPD valve which will present liquid propane when the tank reaches 80%. The only accurate way to measure cylinder volume is by weight.
The reason for transporting and storing cylinders upright is to keep the relief valve (also part of the OPD valve) in communication with the vapor space inside the cylinder to prevent venting of liquid propane.
For general information 20 pound exchange cylinders are only filled to 15 pounds.

I have had this about 3x and never knew what was happening and burned the hair of the back of head screwing around with it taking the valve on and off a couple of times. Then when I finally hit the igniter while stooping in front of the base of the grill. The cold weather caused the gas to flow down into the base and it blasted a flame over my back like a flash bulb. It happened so fast I did not know what happened. I was lucky to have a fleece jacket but it was flash burned over half of my back. This should be common knowledge and it is not. I will telling all my gas supply store that I buy gas from and tell them to instruct their customers on this issue. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO. IT MAY SAVE SOMEONE FROM GETTING SERIOUSLY BURNED!

I've gotten some tanks from the store that the OPD valve had tripped at some point and it sat for so long in the closed position that it gets stuck closed. To unstick the valve you have to hit the bottom of the tank on the ground a few times to jiggle the valve loose. I walk the tank out into the yard over area of soft grass and dirt. Pick the tank up by the top handles about 2-3 feet and then bring it back down in a controlled freefall. You don't want to just let go and drop the tank or it'll just fall over and trip the valve again. Keep you hands on the handles but just let gravity do the work of bringing the tank back down to Earth. The soft grass and dirt won't do damage to the bottom of the tank. I usually repeat about 4-5 times times and then reattach to the grill.

I've been trying to make my butane torch not put out low flow for a year now. I thought it was a bad gasket. No. Just the safety valve. I just needed to reset it. I let the gas out until it is really flowing fast, and THEN light it. (Zippo or candle works well) Then it works like it is supposed to. If I light it right away, it trips the safety valve, and the btu's are unbelievably low. (Though I'm not sure why lighting the torch would trip the safety at first, as just letting propane flow out at high speeds wouldn't, just have to ease it out to full speed slowly. Perhaps you could explain).
This video really is the bee's knees!
    THANK YOU!

Very interesting information, having BBQ's with gas since coming to North America I was not aware of the issues you presented although I have experienced the valve automatic shut off . I also suspect I must have taken the tank for a refill more times than I can count assuming the fault with no ignition was that I was out of gas. Thank youi.

I recently purchased an ALP propane only generator that doesn't require any regulator at all, at least an external one. I'm assuming it's made regulated internally. However I also have a Champion dual fuel generator that wouldn't start until I replaced the external regulator, obtained directly from Champion. Current thinking says to open the valve slowly, assuming it's already connected. I hope someone develops a more reliable system in the future, but I won't hold my breath. Thanks for the video.

I could not figure out why my dual-fuel generator kept cutting out on propane this fall, but wouldn't on gas. And it had worked in the past. Turned out I had put on a gauge to keep tabs of how much propane it had left, and it was this gauge's safety turning off. I took off the gauge and it runs fine. Thank God!
I love using a gauge like this on my grill so I know when to change out the tank. A generator uses more propane than a grill does, must be so much that the gauge's safety thinks it's an open line.

Correct. Hi flow appliances can trick the valve. Open propane valve slow and start appliance on low slowly increasing gas flow

Extremely informative!!! The tank's expiration date is because of safety valve. ??? I've taken care of tanks before that were years old, and frowned that tank can't be filled cause of out of date 😢

    • @TrailFire
      @TrailFire  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

Expiration is for safety. Old tanks can have rust leaks or puncutres. Tanks last 12 years then time for new one with the latest safety valve

My exchange propane tank is equipped with a gauge. I have noticed a fresh tank the level drops REAL FAST.
THEN, under 1/2 tank the drop slows. I can go a LONG time once it is in the red. So It is apparent that these
gauges are not very accurate. THEN, being suspicious as I am, It occurred to me that it would be in the
exchange co best interest if we were to exchange our tank for fresh one when the old tank is 1/2 or 1/3 full
getting us to give back a lot of fuel we paid for and getting us to buy even more. So, what I have done is
ordered one of those magnetic level gauges off AMZ to monitor my exchange tanks level.
    Just IN Case...

Great video! I have been having an intermittent low gas gauge (drop) on the regulator for my Charbroil Commercial series propane gas BBQ grill. I just was unable to turn it on for 3 consecutive attempts. I then tried un-torquing the regulator/hose, torquing back (hand snug) and then SLOWLY opening the propane tank valve and turning on 1 of the 4 burner valves and the gas line didn't go from green to red like before and I was able to light the burner! Thanks a lot.

Propane liquid will expand 270 times as it changes from a liquid state to vapor state. For example, 1 gallon of liquid stored under pressure in a container will expand to approximately 270 gallons of vapor if released to the atmosphere.

Actually there's a spring in the anti leak valve ,, Once it's tripped a couple of times " Re" Setting isn't a option ,, The valve has to be Replaced ,, Hank forgot to mention that ! 😅

Man, when this says propane for Dummies! Yep. Yup. Im not a 60 year old man, lol thank God, but I am a 45 year old woman that never had a clue of the respect and awareness that needs to be at all times when it comes to the potential hazards of not knowing safety protocol for the use of my propane tank and the the double headed heater I attach to it. I have done the stupidest things!!!! I mean I would lug it across my porch while LIT! I was never fully conscious of the turn on shut off process! I call it my “Wally”. (Like that Disney movie robot that looks similar). I would THROW!!!! The whole thing in the back of the car, tumble tilt roll, sometimes connected sometimes not. It is by some miracle that I am still alive….. seriously. I could probably have more hits on you tube or whatevereyacallit that would have blown the JackAss stunts from back when off the charts. Im not trying to brag about how stupid some people are, but they dont teach you this stuff in school. And when you have a Masters Degree and have no idea of these basic fundamentals ….. it’s ludacris. When I changed out my thermal coupler 4 years ago on my water heater because i bought a new house and had no CLUE I had electric heat and gas water heat….. yeah…. Yeah… 3 days learning how to replace a thermal coupler on a 12 year old water heater, TG for you tube! Well… my brother couldn’t stop laughing for about 2 months because then I got my gas bill saying it was never paid! It wasn’t broken! It was fine! LUCKILY the new coupler I put in WORKED!!!! LOL. These are the simple things that girls need to be taught in school! OK.well all i know is that …..i know nothing. But this video made me STOP! And just take a minute with my propane heater and really evaluate safety. I literally thought I might blow up after all the haphazard ways I have utilized it. I have watched at least 10 videos and was about to take the heater part APART! I waited…. And then winter…. Winter arrived and it’s cold out here and then I found this video and …. I offered total respect and safety to this combustible heat source and just slowly and safely did everything I had tried before soooo many times cluelessly, but this time due to this video…. I knew WHAT I WAS DEALING WITH! And man…. It finally lit! Surreal moment. I had done the exact thing but not the right way. So if anyone reads this…. (You must be really bored). This is a shout out to this guy who made this video. Thank you!! I am still alive… not sure if that is the best thing for the world. BUT I am so I am gonna keep on learning and I am going to be smarter when I work on “man” stuff that they didnt teach me when I was in school…. (We wont even go into when I tried changing my oil for the first time …. Another day…. lol). Night

Hello, Does a regulator also act as a filter or are they two different things? I ask because when connecting a propane tank to a portable heater, there are some lines that contain oils that can clog the heater. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
