    The ABS on mine has been great. Never had a problem with it.

    ABS works flawlessly on my 2013 1050 abs. My friends here in Texas with the same iteration of that bike also have no issues. Hope the bike in the video got sorted out properly. Great review!

    Glad they fixed the ABS adjust-ability for the newer models. I noticed it was quick to activate still but I started using more front brake instead of rear and it was fine.

    The sound on these bikes when accelerating, are super, I will buy one just for the sound of it.

    I ride an '09. I've ridden mine almost every day for 7 years now, best bike I've ever owned, plan to ride it until one of us falls apart.

    Love my 2011(non abs) haven't had a go on a street triple yet though. I've got a gpr low boy pipe and it sounds amazing. My misses also comes out with me a lot and she says it's the most comfortable bike I've had.

    Great edit there at the beginning. I love that black and red and single sided swing arm. I have NEVER heard anything like that ABS before. Deal killer for me.

      +CNCycle Thanks buddy! Don't let this issue put you off - there must be something up with this bike in particular.

    Awesome video. Call me weird but I enjoy seeing completely through the bike under the tank because of the engine rotated forward a little bit.

  • @SuperPendulous

    Nice video! I have a 2015 1050 R version. No issues with abs. I had a 2012 street triple and traded up to the 1050 for a bit more power. I did change out the underseat exhaust system for a low boy. picked up a few additional hps and lowered the weight of the bike.

      +SuperPendulous Exactly what I'm thinking of doing fella - you must be loving it!

    The same engine as my Sprint ST, a beast!!! :D

  • @Weeem
    @Weeem 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think pulling the fuse for the ABS would set it to manual braking only.
    If you get the R and it's the same then that could be your backup plan :)

    • @OfficialSmo
      @OfficialSmo  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +WeeemRCB Honestly mate I doubt that the R version will have this problem - I'm putting it down to a fault with this specific bike.

  • @philm2304
    @philm2304 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    So THAT'S what that was! the ABS kicking in under hard braking. I thought it was that in combo with downshifting when it happened to me twice. Otherwise, though, the ABS has never acted up on my '13 Speed Triple R in the 5 months I've had it (new, unsold model off the showroom). Definitely have another go on a different bike. I'm completely taken with mine, honestly. Great shots of the bike, man. Always fun to watch. Looking forward to seeing if a ride on the R will give you a better impression. Cheers.

    • @OfficialSmo
      @OfficialSmo  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Phil M I can't wait to ride an R version matey - I'm going to have a chat with the dealer and see if it's possible to get one in.

    I test rode the a 2015 R last week and found it very much like my mates Tiger 800 (Try one as for a dual sport there surprisingly fun). Also test rode the 765RS and 16 Speed R and preferred the 16 Speed R to the 765 RS (very tracked focussed and the brakes are stupidly powerful)

  • @looseparts
    @looseparts 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I had ABS issues with my brand new Street Triple and the problem wasn't that the sensor needed to be replaced but it did need to be closer to the pick-up wheel which I did with changing the thickness of the washer under the sensor.

      @OfficialSmo  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +looseparts Thanks for the heads up dude, no doubt some people will find that info extremely useful!

    Hey Smo, that ABS failure brings up a point, build and quality of materials aside, is there a possibility we ca hear you talk about the reliability factor on the Triumph (street/speed)? I'm still undecided about what middle weigh naked to get next. Possibilities are: speed or street (I hear the street is much more smoother), Kawa Z900, Yamaha FZ-09.

  • @slick007nick
    @slick007nick 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good review and some lovely shots, but once you're on a bike of that weight and power you really should forget about the rear brake except for slow manoeuvres, with the added engine braking of a 1050 you're asking the rear wheel with the least weight on it to do all the work.

    • @OfficialSmo
      @OfficialSmo  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Surrey Rider I wasn't leaving it to do all the work dude, I'd say when I'm riding I probably use 80/20 or 90/10 front/back braking (if you look you can see me releasing the front lever) - but even under light use it was acting up. The bike must have had some kind of problem.

    • @slick007nick
      @slick007nick 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fair enough mate, definitely something wrong with it!

    • @OfficialSmo
      @OfficialSmo  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    you can adjust the abs which is what im guessing previous owner might have done as that is 100% not normal ..

  • @CaptainRambunctious
    @CaptainRambunctious 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can only think it was duff ABS. I didn't have this happen, but people have complained in the past about the ABS on the Speed so maybe it's a common problem until it gets fixed?

    • @OfficialSmo
      @OfficialSmo  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Captain Rambunctious Maybe dude - had a quick Google and couldn't find anything to do with the rear brake, only the front. Either way, something was definitely up but I want to try another.

    I've thought a few times about moving to a speed over the street, I just can't think of a time where it's going to be 4000 CAD better! I can't wait to see what they do with the street 800 (RS with the ohlins and brembo? yes please!)

  • @335841
    @335841 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just found your channel yesterday and it only took watching a few videos to end up subbing. Very interested in getting a Street Triple or Speed Triple as a next bike (won't be till next year most likely), and after watching your reviews of your bike in some of your videos it's only really reinforced that feeling. Plus you're a likeable and funny guy, bonus points!
    On this video, shame that there were issues with the ABS and no gear indicator. Hopefully the ABS issue was just an anomaly and isn't present in all the Speed Triples. Looking forward to another video if you get a chance to ride the R model and find notable differences.
    Cheers

      @OfficialSmo  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +335841 Thanks dude, I really appreciate it!
      I'm absolutely confident that this doesn't affect all Speed Triples, it must be something specifically wrong with this bike.

  • @hali_moto
    @hali_moto 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Seems like they may have spent more time refining the street triple in comparison to the speed. Would kind of make sense they probably sell a lot more streets. Maybe the speed will get a nice overhaul soon.

    You brake with the rear into corners??

  • @rookielicence1212
    @rookielicence1212 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    A good watch even if it wasn't the 'R', I have wondered at times if I should have got the big brother, but I love my 14 STR. Either on the twisters or straights I always feel a sense of accomplishment - compared when I ride the speed and I felt I was running out of road to quickly (same old story for litre bikes).
    More duel logs on there way SMO ?

    • @OfficialSmo
      @OfficialSmo  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Triumph Gunner Yeah, fair point - there's no doubt in my mind that the Street is plenty for the road, but I'm thinking ahead a little to more track days etc.
      Definitely more Dualvlogs on the way dude - we recorded one on the Speed which is coming soon.

  • @fixed_moto9147
    @fixed_moto9147 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I must ask, when you rode both the STR and the Daytona initially. How different were the engines? I'm yet to get my leg over a STR.

    • @OfficialSmo
      @OfficialSmo  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Knight&Day Low down power is definitely better on the STR over the Daytona, and I'd even say it's probably faster to 60mph, but the Daytona was so bloody fast in the upper rev range when the STR is running out of puff!

    • @fixed_moto9147
      @fixed_moto9147 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought that might be the case, cool to know, thanks mang!

    Would you buy it if it weren't for the ABS issue

    • @OfficialSmo
      @OfficialSmo  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, probably not - I'd rather ride the R version as that's the one I'd most likely buy. That said, if it wasn't for the unfortunate ABS problem this would have been one of my favourite test rides, for sure!

  • @craigwall796
    @craigwall796 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi smo. I have a street triple rx and find the abs very intrusive. triumph website says it can be turned off but seems to be missing when I enter the menu. can you turn your abs off? its the main thing I have a problem with about the bike. like your reviews. keep up the good work.

    • @OfficialSmo
      @OfficialSmo  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Craig Wall I'm sorry to hear that dude, mine is great (although I experienced the crap out of it on this Speed as you could tell).

      +MrMonocleGaming Nah dude, it's exactly the same as the Street (aside the tail and wheel colour). I've considered the rear end conversion but I'm not 100% on the idea just yet.

      +Smo i want to testride a street r now, because i wanna know the difference in seat comfort, im 1m93 and comfort is one of my priorities, on my current bike i get knee pains after 30 mins of riding so it does affect me quite a bit, however i found the street rx to be surprisingly comfortable(considering the daytona back)

    • @OfficialSmo

    Hi SMO, I have the Speed Triple R; never had that problem.
    In respect to the gear indicator; I believe that the 675 has a 'fly by wire' system and the 1050 has not. That's why it's missing on the 1050; so I'm led to believe 😕

    • @OfficialSmo

    It was obviously the bike as it has received endless praise from journalists and even race riders. Those bikes use a lot of engine braking and if you come off the throttle hard the bikes surges and thus loses traction.

    I own a 2013 1050 R model and I almost never have the ABS kick in. You need to stop standing on the rear brake, the 1050 motor has massive engine brakes that can lock the rear wheel easily and the ABS can't intervene with that. If you are near rear wheel lock with engine brakes (which is most of the time) as soon as you touch the rear brake the ABS will chime in. I have never had the ABS come on with the front brakes, ever.

  • @Koldsmith
    @Koldsmith 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yep, that hole is a put-off. I know that filling it would have meant extra weight, but I like my bike to look like no space is wasted. I like my bike to look... compact and stocky.
    ABS is horse :/ dead shame, that would almost persuade me to buy a non-abs and/or older model.

    • @OfficialSmo
      @OfficialSmo  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +VtwinVlogster The hole is weird, for sure! Don't let the ABS issue put you off, I think it was a problem with that specific bike.

    I don't think they should even have ABS on a sports bike. Take it off, save the weight IMO. I've never had it on any of my bikes, and I've never once needed it either in 20 years of ridding. When the rear tire starts to slide, you just back off the brake and it comes right back in line.

    Has anybody considered that the Brembo braking system on this bike has a 20-30%% more bite than the Nissin system on the Striple R... Combine that with a really hard (or bad) set of brake pads and you' ve got yourself on a frontwheel instant locker..
    My friend had the same problem adjusting to the stopping power of the Brembo system on his Nuda R until he changed the brake pads with a set of softer ones. (Front wheel lockups were common for him as he didn't have ABS which was very frustrating for him also)
    Please don't get me wrong, but I feel that maybe you' re just not too accustomed to the bite of the particular breaking system.
    Hope this gives a bit more insight to the specific problem, and help you to not misjudge an otherwise fantastic piece of machinery...
    Also forgive my english, I' m from Greece and still learning...

    I have never heard bike ABS chatter like that, on my STR it's silent with just a pulsing in the lever to let me know it just saved my skin, same thing when I tested a MT-09 Tracer. That bike needs to go to a Triumph dealer or someone with the diagnostic equipment to talk to the ABS pump.

    That's a fault in the system. I rode one the same year and it never did that. But yes I second riding the new Speed Triple, It's a wheelie machine that's for sure. There is probably no gear indicator as they pretty much didn't change the bike for almost 20 years.

    Its a real shame the ABS ruined your enjoyment mate. Gutter!
    I have to admit I'm not a big fan of the current Speed Triples styling. I've had two of the original version 1050s, raw looks, utter fun and smiles for miles! And no ABS shenanigans.
    It did seem pretty extreme, considering you weren't really pushing it that hard. Faulty sensor? Faulty set-up? Maybe your local Triumph dealer could shed some light?

    • @OfficialSmo

    National speed limit!
    Does not mean 60mph. Have you seen national speed limit on motorway?
    National speed limit means, speed that is suitable for the type of road and conditions up to the limit of the road. Could be 30mph could be 60 or 70mph.
    You could be on a national speed road, do 40 mph and be done for driving with undue care and attention

    • @Billybob09871

      Kinda my point its better to get rid of drivers aids and teach people how to actually drive, they don't even mention cadence braking in lessons anymore, they just tell you to let the abs do the emergency stopping, which is why I got rear ended by 2 transit connects, they were both works vehicles, driven by idiots, who left the brakes on despite being locked up, right until they hit my car, and who although only my own speculation, probably had vehicles of their own fitted with abs, so why would thy think to let off the brake if its locked up

    • @OfficialSmo
      @OfficialSmo  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Billybob09871 Yeah, I hear where you're coming from - my biggest gripe with the lack of education in terms of driving and control is that nobody is taught how to control a car that is technically 'out of control' . As you mentioned, if the wheels locked up is one example. Another is if they lose the back end around a corner. Hardly anyone knows what to do, or the difference in characteristics between FWD, RWD & AWD. Don't even get me started on following distances in the rain or driving in ice & snow!
