Sonic Lost World on Wii U received a lot more flack than fans had expected prior to release, however this pales in comparison to the version released on Nintendo 3DS on the exact same day back in 2013. Sonic Lost World 3DS is considered one of the worst Sonic games released, especially of the games released in the last ten years. I had actually never played it prior to today, so we shall find out how I feel about it now when playing it for the first time!

I think I liked 3ds version more because it required more skill compared to the console version. I'll admit the level design is a bit all over the place but I'm pretty adaptable to game styles so it wasn't a huge issue. Also you can actually activate ground pound during Quake Wisp by jumping and pressing the Y button, its not a one time use.

One thing I will applaud the 3DS version is, that it properly taught you how to do parkour and all of sonics moves. The Wii U version barely ever talked about them making it hard to understand how you are supposed to perform certain actions, meanwhile the 3DS version properly teaches the player how to do every one of sonics moves

Man, I'm gonna miss having these compressed/abridged versions of console experiences on handhelds. Thanks to the Nintendo Switch and more recently the Steam Deck, we now live in a time where mainstream handheld gaming is on equal ground with console gaming in terms of hardware, so now there's no need to create these alternate versions of games that are specifically designed for them. Especially now with the 3DS on death's door.

    • @VTorner
      @VTorner ปีที่แล้ว +4

Some "alternate" versions of games would be good for Switch. The console lacks in power and a lot of studios don't want to put the money and effort in optimizing for it, going the easy way (crappy ports). Hell, they don't even optimize for Series S, which is miles beyond Switch.

As someone who played the heck out of Lost Worlds 3DS and loved it as a kid, I can say with certainty that most of your complaints are completely valid. (Especially those awful Special Stages.) That said, I do believe it is the better version of Lost Worlds, and for several reasons.
    1) You aren't locked out of progressing if you don't have enough animals rescued.
    2) The levels and worlds are a lot more cohesive and match with their settings. You won't get a random jungle level in the middle of a desert or a casino level in the middle of an ice zone.
    3) Boss fights take a bit longer and are overall more engaging. Zeena no longer dies in 2 hits and puts up a real fight. Her, Zazz, and Zomon give you wide areas to run around in, letting players use Sonic's mobility to weave, dodge and counterattack. And while the Zavok fight is janky as heck, he no longer acts as a simple Bowser clone. (That said, the controls in the Zik fight are still awkward at best. And the Zor fight is a glorified "spot the difference" mini game, making it easily the most lame boss in the game)
    4) Some levels are designed with Wisps as a focus. While some may not like that, I personally much prefer it, since it keeps them from feeling "tacked-on". (Gray Quake was always annoying to steer though; I can't excuse that.)
    5) I also enjoyed Parkour being built into the level design. It's a surprisingly fun mechanic when it works.

Played the 3DS version for the first time quite recently just to compare it to the big consoles versions. Better controls, better parkour that gives a lot of room for cheezy strats, better separation of homing and kicking attacks and how each enemy is affected by each, level design with room for skipping and speedrunning, all that HEAVILY outweighted negatives in the video like too many mandatory gimmicks even if half of them are good, mandatory wisps and level's length (and yes all negatives are valid). Can't imagine how nightmareish special stages and half the gyro gimmicks are like when emulating the game, on real console they are good if you are willing to get up and start moving around. Worst idea for gaming on the go, but at home - perfect. And Super Sonic was worth it, breaking the game in a good way
Also everything RC related was quite amusing to dive into, with tons of cute Tails animations on the side. And other stuff adding replayability like hard mode and unlockable extra stages, but not like that matters if you don't like the main game

Personally speaking, I just like the level design more and the way they did the bosses. Parkour felt like it had more and better utilization, I actually kinda like how the wisps reward you being good with them to get past certain sections of level quicker or opening up new paths, the game has a whole hard mode and extra acts for you to unlock making it the first sonic game since unleashed where I felt it had a good amount of meat to it and it has my favorite level in the series (Sky Road 3) to top it off. Not to mention, the multiplayer when there were still people playing was godlike, it was like having SA2's again but with more choice and fully featured levels and the various shortcuts throughout the stages make for a good test to see how well you know about the level compared to your opponent.
Like you said though, if you didn't enjoy the initial experience there's no reason why you'd want to dig into all of this and I can't say a lot of the points you made weren't valid, I just really like how freeform this game is compared to how stiff it's console counterpart was.

Honestly, looking back, I strangely have more fond memories of Lost World 3DS compared to Wii U that I don't fully understand. I had both versions I played around the same time, and maybe it's just my overall 3DS game(s) nostalgia back then, but I somewhat enjoyed how many different things there were in the 3DS version, tedious gimmicks or not. Absolutely not defending the half an hour long gimmick levels and underused concepts that both versions feature, but it just seems like Lost World 3DS tried a LOT of different things as a 3D Sonic game on handheld compared to Lost World Wii U being the main title that felt underwhelming on a console. While I actually was that kid sitting at the lunch table spinning around in a circle to get the Chaos Emeralds (I don't want to talk about it), having different gimmicks didn't bother me as much as it should have and I think just having a 3D Sonic game on the go was why I thought it was better than it was when compared to other Sonic games out there.
Definitely need to have a second playthrough of both versions at this point, because I could just feel nostalgia towards them as they were my first 3D Sonic games since I only had Colors and Generations 3DS as a kid, and thinking about it now, I feel like they would be good standalone games if they weren't supposed to be "Sonic" games that limited Sonic's speed and movement a few years after the best modern Sonic game was released.

I wonder how much of needing to make for the 3DS influenced Lost World’s design. You mentioned in Generations that the Adventure formula could work on the system but would it really? The 3DS can barely run Snake Eater at 20FPS would it really be able to run a high speed 3D Platformer?
While we know the main goal was to appeal to Mario fans I wonder if the 3DS’a hardware limitations played any role. There was barely any 3D platformers on the system as it is (Skylanders, Super Mario 3D Land, Rayman 2, and Kingdom Hearts 3D are the only ones that come to mind and the last one is stretching it) so I’m doubtful a faster Sonic could run well

I never got to play the Wii U version but i own the 3DS one, and ever since i beat it, it's become a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. So i wouldn't say it's *as* bad as people make it out to be but i can see how it can be frustrating to anyone who wants a much better paced experience without all the gimmicks and stuff getting in the way, especially since the acts often drag on too long prioritizing the Wisps over your own skill.
However, i still consider it one of my favorite games on 3DS, which may as well be due to the fun that comes from thinking outside of the box and finding ways to speedrun the levels faster
I mean, sure. There IS a huge amount of slow mini challenges and other things that can make the level design tedious pretty much all the way through, but since some of these stages are still somewhat open-ended, this too allows for more freedom when you take full advantage of Sonic's moveset and zip through them. Also making some of the most boring sections satisfying and easy to skip.
Especially the areas with mandatory platforming or combat and every act 3
(Except for Desert Ruins. Only the first act from that zone is actually bearable imo)
Personally, i wouldn't recommend giving the game a second try if you already dislike it, but you can still get some enjoyment out of its worst parts, tho that comes at the cost of spending enough time getting used to the controls and everything.
Including some weird quirks such as the homing attack only being able to lock onto rows of 3 enemies at most (on top of making you inmune to any active hitboxes that would normally damage you, right after the 1st badnik from that same row is destroyed) and the way your walking/running speed always carries over to the spin dash in mid-air

I actually prefer this version; I've beaten it close to 100% (still working on some S-ranks) and I would even rank it among my top ten Sonic games. It has better boss fights that require more thought, and it doesn't force you to hunt for more animals to beat the Zones. Yes, it still has some stage gimmicks, but unlike the console version, most of them don't alter the gameplay style, and that alone makes the level design and gameplay more cohesive. Combine that with the presence of series staples that weren't in the console version (elemental shields, Grind Step, etc.), and overall Lost World 3DS feels much more like a Sonic game.
The one thing I wholly agree with the majority on is the Special Stages. Even as someone who doesn't get motion sick, I feel that they should've either allowed usage of the Circle Pad, or just revamped them altogether. I still prefer this version's approach to unlocking Super Sonic over the console version's, though.

Generations 3ds could have easily used 360 cutscenes like how lost world does, however it wouldn't make sense. Why would they play a cutscene with chemical plant in the background in a game without chemical plant. All cutscenes where sonic saves his friends have locations in the background that aren't in the 3ds version. You could remove all those cutscenes but then you'd be left with like 5 scenes, what's the point at that stage

The 3DS had better bosses, actually useful help icons, a functional kick stun attack, super sonic was so easy to get (I unlocked him so early, around the midpoint of the game). Also unlike the Wii U version, we could use Supersonic in the final Zone against Eggman. Also, when it comes to horrible special stages, nothing nothing can beat Sonic Advance 2 (I had to use a GameShark because I got so fed up).
The mini bosses while annoying didn't really bother me that much, but the level design for certain areas did. The long Snow levels, and the sky level where you have to ride those Rockets with the gyro sensor, drove me insane. But I'd still rather play the 3DS version, where supersonic doesn't have two mouths, than the Wii U version😂.

Honestly, I had a similar experience to Lost World 3DS that you did with 06. There was a point in which the enjoyment of the game was the skill and knowledge about levels and speedrunning strategies rather than the game itself. For me, it was a rather challenging experience in its best parts, and really boring in its worse. However, this never stopped me from getting all the S ranks in regular AND Hard mode with the Chaos Emeralds (these stages I thought they were a fun idea for implementing the 3DS capabilities as a kid... not so much anymore). Again, its not as good as I thought it was as a kid, but replaying it again now the enjoyment of finishing up a challenging level speedrunning style on hard mode never gets old, I guess its because you know the game is not really in your favor(?)

I was a Nintendo kid with just a 3DS, had never played a Sonic game in my life but one day I got Lost Worlds, and I liked it a lot, because ironically it felt like a Mario game. I was a kid so I couldn't notice the flaws of it, and being able to run on the walls and stuff was just so exciting to me. The special stages felt very fun to me, but I do remember the length of some stages got me frustrated a bunch of times. So yeah I'm pretty fond of this version, truly amazing how a kid's mind will just appreciate anything in the most naive mindset.

I kinda enjoyed this version for a few reasons.
1, it was the only 3D Sonic alternative to Unleashed on the Wii. And knowing that what I didn't like about that game wasn't in this one, I took this game pretty well, but my perspective on a game should be developed was not yet part of my mindset. Because of
2, I was 10 years old when I played this game. I wasn't watching real critics and other people who knew what they were talking about discuss what makes a video game good.
3, Being young, I had a lot of time on my hands.
4, I loved Sonic. First games I played were what you'll see in the Mega Collection on GameCube. So nostalgia to me I guess.
I just gotta give a huge thanks to you J. I've been looking forward to this video for such a while, I can't even begin to describe how much anticipation I had for you to tear this old game to pieces. I wish you the best of luck and time further down the line.

I won't lie, I preferred the 3DS version. Maybe it's just the controls, but it just FEELS more like a Sonic Game. Once you can figure out the more janky mechanics and figure out the motion controls, it can be surprisingly fun, even if a bit frustrating. The levels were also a lot more unique than just 'here's a flat 2D space' or 'here's a wide flat 3D area' or 'here's a fucking tube'.
That. Being. Said. Even with that in mind, most of these points are valid. While most levels were fun, when they were bad they could be REALLY bad. Motion Controls mean that playing the game on the go is nigh impossible without looking like an idiot, and don't get me started on the special stages.

I find your point about replaying a game making it better to be interesting. A lot of people judge game critics for saying a Sonic game is bad because the critic in question didn't know how to play the game. However, I'd say that it's one of the responsibilities of the game designer to communicate how the game is played, thus making such judgements valid. I believe a good example is Sonic Riders. I've heard that it has terrible gameplay communication, but it has deep and stylish core gameplay, which is why it reviewed badly, but still has an active community

I'd like to say that Sonic Boom Rise Of Lyric is a game that just screams missed potential. And I would be lying if I said the game has NO merit. I for one think the character redesigns are really good and even if you disagree, you can't deny that they're WAY more animator friendly at least. And speaking of animation... Ooh boy the animators had a load of fun making them! From the various combat attacks which included one of the most detailed Spin-Dashes I've seen to the unique run styles when in a speed segment, the devs REALLY had fun making them and gave the cast so much expression compared to the modern games at the time. I also liked the characterization of the main team so that they feel more grounded despite having the core traits and the main 4 can easily be recognized as an actual team right from the start even when they argue. Plus Amy isn't just Sonic's fangirl for a change too. It's certainly better than letting Sonic do all the leg work for his after all since the main 4 are all playable. It's a shame ideas and directions conflicted and directly caused the game to be a buggy mess, but I really appreciate what the team was trying to make and I wished we got more. And hey, while Shattered Crystal was somewhat a better ride since it actually plays fine (Progression can get annoying at times), Fire & Ice on the 3DS is probably one of the few Sonic games that got time to be delayed and it resulted in an easily better product between the 3DS games.

I actually really like Lost world 3ds, probably more than most Sonic games (nostalgia I know), but what baffles me is the way the worlds are setup. There is always a regular 3d level (by far the best part of the game), a 2d one (tolerable for the most part) and a "puzzle" one (which tend to be the worst ones and those that were mentioned in the video). I seriously think the regular 3d ones are well designed but the puzzle ones are awful, with the snow one making quit playing every time I replay this game both on a fresh save file and on hard mode. However I think the special stages are overhated and that, despite the controls, are well made, even getting quite challenging and strict by the end, but something everyone who endured them can agree on is that super Sonic here fells amazing in how broken he is, making you feel more powerful than in the classics (by the way if you bounce with Quake you can do the shochwave attack again which is pretty helpful)

I got this game alongside my 3DSXL and Mario Kart 7 for Christmas of 2013. After playing Generations for the 360, I had high hopes for this version of the game. Needless to say...I spent _way_ more time on MK7

7:12 ...you can just stomp as the quake wisp the same way as you would playing as Sonic in his regular form.

I bought this version digitally and now it sits in my library eternally rotting. The first two acts of Windy Hill and Special Stages were actually pretty great but the experience just plummets from there.
I always compare it to 3D Land since the general gist is more or less the same.
3D Land doesn't try to give you any more or less than what you need while Lost World draws out things much more than it needs to. I'll give Dimps props for trying to make a beefy game but it was way too much.
