    Hi Guys. Respectfully, to those of you complaining that Kevin is talking too much: Keep in mind that his target audiences are "Newb" enthusiasts as well as young people that have interest in automotive vehicle maintenance. These aren't targeted towards seasoned collision repair techs, or weekend car warriors. That's why he doesn't use terms like "Delamination", or "Iron Oxide" excessively and keeps the terminology to a minimum. I've been in the business a number of years and, while he does make an occasional mistake (who doesn't), his vids are good. Unlike some training vids from manufacturers, he's not boring and keeps your attention. It's hard enough as is trying to get today's younger generation to put down their IPHONEs and encourage them to learn these trades. Kevin manages to connect with them.

    • @dropinbiking92
      @dropinbiking92 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Spot on! I remember watching Kevin on Trucks, and a few other shows on TV when I was younger, yet another reason I got into the collision repair industry. He has a good way of breaking things down and making analogies to help newcomers understand. This is such an interesting field, with SO much to learn, and it's ever-evolving. I don't think this generation really understands how BIG the demand is in the field, how well it can pay, and how much fun it can really be.

      I second that. I'm one of those n00bs and am absorbing as much info as possible. Even if it's tangential to the actual task it's rounding out a store of information that creates an understanding of the "why shit happens the way It do" in my head. keep up the long windy high information calorie overload.

      @classicferrarilover 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! I'm a not a painter but have been trying to learn. During these videos even I can find myself thinking, "I'm not sure thats the best way," BUT, at least I am able to completely understand what he is trying to teach. He doesn't assume that the viewer already knows. If its not always the correct method, at least I'll know the right questions to ask to find the right method rather than being completely lost.

    I think you are right! Back in the 70"s clear coats lasted. In fact they advertised you never need to wax again. I had 2 cars over 14 years and never waxed them. They looked much like the day I bought them when I traded them in. Today I see clear coats cracking with delamination regularly. I also think it is the poorer quality paint that expands in the heat causing the clear coat to crack allowing uv rays to penetrate the paint. Or a paint that expands in the heat and a clear coat that can't.

    Is the color off on my monitor, or are you using regular masking tape? On your show car that already is having clear coat peeling issues? You didn't whet all the tape. Especially if a car has been repaired and/or repainted you are inviting disappointment into your life. Spend a couple bucks more and get the right tape. The right tool for the right job.

    I bought a 2 year old Mercedes that was sitting on a dealer's lot for 7 months that was near a freeway. The horizontal surfaces of the car has what feels like sandpaper granules embedded in the clearcoat, maybe 6 per square inch. I'm guessing that it was a result of acidic fallout particles from the freeway that bonded to the clearcoat. I tried buffing with a moderate rubbing compound which got some of it off. I then went to a slightly courser rubbing compound, which was probably a mistake, as it got off the remainder of the particles, but left a few swirl marks. The swirl marks are not just chemical residue on the surface but microscopic scratches in the clearcoat. Is there any fix to this problem? Can you buff out these kind of scratches?

    I am hunting for info on fiberglass. My son wants his corvette painted and have a clear coat put on, but Maaco told him they would paint it, but couldn't put on a clear coat, because it won't work. Why?

    • @brettgoodchild1916
      @brettgoodchild1916 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Let me start by telling you what Maaco is saying isn't true at all. Maaco doesn't know what they are talking about. They're also a terrible "in and out" shop with low standards...at least it's like that here. Shooting fiberglass is different than a steel car.
      You need to shoot poly surfacer before primer (so the primer has something to stick too, it won't stick to just the fiberglass) then primed, based and cleared. Before any poly surfacer can be put down, all the body work will have to be perfect since fiberglass with shrink and expand a lot more than steel. Any imperfections and the surfacer will bridge over the imperfections and over time with the body shrinking and expanding, the paint will start to delaminate, causing little blisters which will lead to the clear coat peeling.
      I've seen what happens when a paint job hasn't been prepped properly. I have a 62 Corvette sitting in my shop right now that had that, not to mention very sketchy repairs done.
      If you're going to get a Corvette painted, and it's fiberglass, you may want to spend a bit more on a paint job. The materials aren't cheap, and there's quite a bit of labor. In the end it'll be worth it, and you wont have to worry about painting it again for quite a long time.

    I'd really like to see videos where it doesn't take 20 minutes of talking to show me how to tape. It's waaaaaaay too much talking for the amount of the data I get from this, despite me being absolutely new to painting anything. It could have been a 10 minute video for the whole process instead of three part video with all the yapping.
