  • In this video I cover some of the changes in Milwaukee tools M18 batteries over the years. With the higher capacity batteries, rapid chargers are now a thing. I explain why I prefer to slow charge a battery with a standard charger when time permits.

Very good analysis. It's obvious when you think about it.

I have those old original 2010-2013 3.0 and even the 4.0 xc batterys. And I have newer 5.0, HO6.0 and HO12.0. I only have the old single m18 charger not even the one with the m12 like you have there. And these batteries all work great. The older 3.0 and 4.0 ones I got were from my dads work where they were abused day in and day out going through 2-3 charge cycles or more in a day. They are still working great. Fully charging running them down on my grinder from time to time. These old chargers are the way to go. And I agree. Less heat and slower lower amp charging the better. Those old packs were built better too! That’s why they aren’t around anymore. The newer ones are planned obsolescence so they go bad sooner when the chip board tells it to. I’ve had the old 3.0 batteries there are two versions of with the casing. Outlast newer 5.0s.

I def don't recommend buying their fast chargers. Even with their new Forge batteries I won't. My suggestion to anyone who thinks they need to fast charge... Buy more batteries. Simple solution. Heat kills. Personally I have so many batteries and I believe anyone who is a serious tool user will have more than enough batteries to never need fast charge. Some of those high capacity batts do take forever to charge. Plan for it... buy a second battery at least. The batteries and your wallet will thank you long term. I have some seriously old 3.0 batts too. They don't make anything better as time passes.... Most of the time... Just cheaper. Thanks for watching and commenting. Our experiences seem similar for sure.

Sounds like Milwaukee’s BMS system doesn’t have a balancer . I’d take the big pack apart and see if they are balanced and if not I’d balance the cells then see how it reacts to the charge .

It's interesting... One thing I forgot to mention in the video... The 9.0 battery still gets a real nice 100% charge out the old charger. Just takes longer. But if I rapid charge it... The two bar issue shows up. Where at two bars of battery life, the vacuum just quits. If I slow charge it, I can get it down to one bar before it cuts out. I get a lot more run time out of the battery. It's almost as if the rapid charger gets the voltage to a charged state before the capacity is actually there. If I slow charge it seems as if it has full capacity. Someday I will take it apart. It's hard to trouble shoot cells in a pack like this as they are all spot welded together. Hard to isolate an individual cells without total teardown. It can get exciting quick with a fumble of a screwdriver. Someday I will try. I appreciate your thoughts and suggestions. If I ever tear it down I'll let you know what I find... If I don't burn up. Thanks for commenting and watching.

@@MTRFAB it’s a little pack that won’t do anything to you … 24v is about as high as you want to go and still be reckless . I have a 48v bank that will light you up 😆

      correct
they are not bms, they don’t balance batteries while charging them.
earlier generation of HD 9.0 were good cuz they use LG cells
the later one use Samsung 30Q and many just fail
same 18650 were in M12 CP3.0 and XC6.0 just junk

      “Milwaukee M18 Batteries: 5.0, 9.0, 12.0, and Other Models
milwaukee m18 mMilwaukee M18 batteries are intended for powering a long list (150+) of compatible Milwaukee M18 cordless tools, allowing users to power all of their tools using just a few standard batteries. Such practice also decreases the price of every purchased tool since it can be bought as a "bare tool."
Milwaukee M18 batteries differ in capacity and internal construction. Still, they all feature a fuel gauge, which allows the users to check the remaining capacity, and the built-in Battery Management System (BMS), which monitors the battery and protects it if required.
