I've been a professional painter for over 15 years. I also like Deck Over Stain and I haven't had major problems on any deck I've done using this product. I do an extra step before applying Deck Over that the manufacture doesn't mention. After cleaning, prepping, power washing and waiting a few days to dry, the must thing I have to do before applying the stain, is prime the deck. I use a good exterior water-based bonding primer. After the primer dries, I go back and sand it lightly, then I apply 2 coats of Deck Over stain. I think the primer is the main key and why I've had success with this product. If you go see the videos of the people complaining about Deck Over Stain peeling, you'll see that it's because there's nothing sealing the wood. The bad thing about deck over, is that it doesn't penetrate into the wood like other Stains would. That's why I think it's really important that you prime it before applying this product. I just wanted to share my experience with this product..... One more thing I also tell my clients is to put Furniture pads underneath their patio furniture. It's usually metal patio furniture and sooner or later someone is going to scratch the floor with that furniture and that's when you're going to start having trouble with this product.

Decks have a life span. By using Deckover you've increased that life span tremendously. My deck in the S.F. Bay Area (near Half Moon Bay) is redwood and was built in 1971. We used Deckover six years ago and it still looks fantastic. Every now and then we'll find a board that needs replacing and almost 100% of the time, it's the "white" redwood that has rotted. Redwood mainly consists of dark/hard wood and light/soft wood. When you guy redwood 2" X 6" deck boards, avoid the white wood if you can. My guess is the reason the product didn't stick on some of the sides is because you painted over wood that was either wet, dirty, greasy or something other than clean and dry. No paint will stick to something like that. The cracks can be stopped if you know where they begin and end. Simply take a drill bit and drill a small hole at each end of the crack. That stops the crack. Fill the crack and drill holes with more Deckover and I'll bet you never see that crack again. I think you should be very happy and proud that you did such a great job. Twenty years isn't that old for some decks and I'm betting yours will last as long as mine....or longer.
I agree! I painted our deck 6 or seven years ago. And it still looks pretty good. Just getting ready to cover deck boards again. Love it. Looked like composite when completed. However, it IS ALL ABOUT THE PREP work. If not prepped correctly, your results may not be as good. It's worth the effort. LOVED my deck wet finished. And I agree. Use the brush. Not roller
Just did our deck in the textured finish and after watching yours and so many other videos, I brushed the Deck Over on and thick coated. Our boards were really bad and afterwards, I am amazed at how well the deck looks. Now, I have one cracked board that cracked after the application, but I expect that. It’s been really hot here in Cincinnati the past few days and humid as well. It’s the ONLY spot I have and I thought there would be more. Amazed how well this product works and applying the thicker coating principle definitely is costlier, but does wonders.
Hi there, this is Gary from woodstock Ontario. I have a small deck in front of my house i had built 2 years ago. I used Behr semi-transperent stain on the preasure treated wood...but used a cleaner first before applying stain product. This year....its all pealing off and looks so crappy. I dont know what happened....but it looks aweful....not happy. So this year....im going to re-do it ONE LAST TIME. But this time......im going to use a solid stain ( barn red ). I already bought the solid stain. And i also bought WOOD STAIN & FINISH STRIPPER. Have not started yet....just waiting on the weather. Is there anything else i need to get....after i strip the deck?? Once its dry....i just put the stain on next??
Beyond, you seem sincere, but painting flat decks should not be done. The amount of labor is too much for the one year it lasts, then you are in a worse position than when you started. If you put a power washer on those cracks the paint will come apart very easily. I did the whole thing, but covering the sides is difficult at best. I ended up removing the deck boards and flipping them over, and there's nice smooth boards which you can power wash and seal. You may find stain where joists made contact. I will try sanding a liitle or deck cleaner in those spots. If I could show picture I would. Just line up nail or screw holes.

1.Use advanced Deckover same tint to follow up, fill the cracks, use a sponge with a handle or a brush, dilute the paint slightly until it doesn't start drying too early after being brushed for a minute. 2. Remove the board you could not paint all of and clean it with deck prep cleaner (opens the wood pores) then paint it then put it back. 3. Expect to do yearly maintenance on your porch, including one can of deckover every year and some sanding and scraping then painting on horizontal surfaces plus ensuring your gaps are clear. (If you were a sailor you would be used to continually scraping and painting.)
Good review and explaination of what you did to prep and properly apply the product. I almost didn't buy this product because of another video review but it doesn't look like they applied it properly. Glad I saw this review.
Just an FYI, there was a large class action lawsuit against Behr for this product. We had it on our deck, applied it correctly and is coming up in foot-long chunks. It has ruined ours and 3 of our friend's deck.
@@karlaselness272 it doesn't make sense to me why they would continue to sell a product that doesn't work and is prone to failure. There is also alot of happy people with the product so it can't be that bad. Guess I will find out, I just bought some for my deck today.
@@karlaselness272 I'm sorry it didn't work for you. This is what my wife wants to use even though I've pointed out that it is a difficult product to apply. We will see how it goes I guess :) She works in a warehouse where they develop new coatings all the time and prep is 90% of the job, so she feels confident that we can make it work. This product does have a lot of room for failure no doubt about it.
The key is to do the right prep, thick layers and make sure you do the sides of the boards( down between the cracks). When this product peels, it starts at the edge (or if nails pop out through it). By doing the sides of the boards, you are putting that edge where it has no wear and tear on it. Also it’s a lot harder for water to get between the product and the boards
Your indtance probably worked better because there were so many cracks and roughness of the aged deck before rejuvenating. Thos cracks etc gave great purchase to the axrylic product. Smoother boards could be a problem.
I had DeckOver applied to my 8 year old deck. The handyman who did it first took the whole deck down to the raw wood then applied DeckOver. I live in a condo and have had no problems with my deck in 5 years. I think that is amazing! The condo assoc. inspects our decks every year and mine has passed inspection every year until now. I'm a widow in my 70's so I've done nothing to maintain it over the years. Now my questions. Can you tell me what need to be done to the deck to bring it up to snuff? I see no peeling but it is sun faded. Should I tell the contractor not to power wash? Should the contractor sand it? Can DeckOver be re-applied over the first application? Any help you can give me would be appreciated!
for anyone looking to use this, do NOT. I have a deck with countless cracks in it to which I used this paint expecting great results. It covered great and looked amazing right after painting it, but only 3-4 years later the paint EASILY comes off in long strips, breaking off with even something as gentle as sweeping the deck. DONT use it!! Put your money in a better paint
jessica same thing happened to me after only one year. And I washed my deck, rinsed well and let the deck dry thoroughly for 2 days before application and it lifted right off after one year.
I also used this product and it totally ruined my deck. It holds in the moisture and rots your boards. Behr uses the excuse that it wasn't properly installed which is so bogus. I have a south west facing deck so its hot and it started to bubble a week after it was applied, after the winter it had flaked and peeled it was a mess. Worst product ever I can't believe that behr continues to sell this crap with all the problems it causes. Now tr;y removing it another nightmare.

I had the same experience. My deck was 4 years old & looked like a 30 yr old deck after 1 season with Behr Deck over. It was worse after the winter, it kept coming off in big strips. It has been the worst/costly mistake. After trying to sand (disaster, balled up - never sanded off right) and repaint, this product continued to peel up. This year I am tearing off the railing & boards and installing vinyl. I did complain & they sent more of their awful product. I also heard there was a class action lawsuit, but I never followed through. Live & Learn : (
What y'all need to realize is that this is just paint Really THICK paint, but paint nonetheless. With it being g so thick, there is no way for it to penetrate the wood. It stays on the surface regardless of how you prep it. Any break in that coating will let moisture in and that moisture spreads and has a hard time getting out. You don't have to read all the tech stuff to know what happens. Just use a little common sense.
There are so many videos of people who had bad experiences, even though I would love to use it if it worked, I may just switch to regular Behr solid stain from the Behr semi-transparent I have used for the last 25 years on my deck. (It sounds logical from what you found re: getting enough product in between the boards, since many just use a roller.....think getting in between the boards has saved my deck in lasting this long too.) Thanks for the video. (BTW...I noticed I don't see any recent videos so hope all is OK with you.)
The instructions on the Deckover product I just bought from Home Depot recommends a 1/2" roller for a textured finish or a specialty Behr roller for an extra-textured finish. So I'm wondering where you got the notion that it can't be rolled. Was that in the original installation instructions? Also, I noticed in your original video that you didn't pre-fill the cracks before your first application. You seem to have skipped that necessary step to eliminate the appearance of cracks. Aren't these just the original cracks that were there before your initial application? The paint guy at my Home Depot said to follow this sequence: Day 1 (morning): Strip and wash the deck, then let dry 24 hours); Day 2 (morning): Prefill cracks and then let dry for 4-6 hours; (evening): Apply first full coat and then let dry 24 hours; Day 3 (evening): Apply final coat.
Sounds like he “got his notion” from his experience using/applying the product- In fact, he goes onto explain this notion of his his in -9:27, explaining that the product was so thick, he had a difficult time applying it with a roller. Perhaps he should have said, “I wasn’t able to use a roller.....” for all the lovely, “literal nitpickers” in the comment section. But even if he had, I’m sure ya’ll would have managed to find something else. 🙄
Kristen Hill Have you applied the product, or are you just here to comment on something you have zero knowledge of or experience with? The manufacturer instructions specify the use of a roller. I used this product on my own deck, using the exact type of roller they specified and it went on exactly as it should have and the finish turned out great. Failure to read the instructions or incompetence in application does not reflect on the product but on the DIYer using it.

In your original it looks like you did the slats first. Then slats needed a touch up after the deck paint? Could you tape the base of the slats? Did you use the cleaner on the slats?
By slate, are you referring to the railing spindles? I did not use deck over on the railings (the black) I can’t remember now but it was another Behr deck paint product
I like your video. I did a similar TH-cam series on Behr solid deck stains, I got a similar (surprising) big response. I looked at your first video, and I think your deck was "just over the line" in favor of using a restoring product like Deck-Over. Sanding your deck to a better/smoother staring point would have been a lot of work, and my guess is you judged it to be "not worth it"; and I'd agree with you. Deck-Over is a rescue product, and despite what some goofballs in the comments say, it is not supposed to turn an ignored 20 yr old deck into a new composite deck. It is supposed to fill in cracks, prevent splintering, weather-seal, give a pop of color, and make the deck usable. If I had a deck that needed Deck-Over, I'd consider how long I planned to live on that property. 2-3 years, sure. I'd use it. But If I was planning to stay more than 5, I'd consider rebuilding deck with Trex or another composite manufacturer, or use a premium hard-wood company like Ironwood. Why? On my traditional, pre-treated, lumber deck, I had to re-stain it every 2-3 years (according to Consumer Reports, 2 years on a stain is really good). I ended up living there for over 10 years, and the cost of the stain/supplies (figure $500-800) and my time was not worth it. I sold that home 3 months ago, and despite no fewer than the initial application and 3 subsequent applications (4x in 10 yrs), the last in 2018 (a complete restain, spires and all), I had 2-3' of 3 boards in a corner go rotten. Its 2-3 hours repair work, no big deal; but it just goes to show that when it comes to decks, time always wins. All you can do delay the inevitable. Composite decking has its own issues, but the up-front cost is worth it IMHO. Most of the cost in building a deck is labor, the material cost of PT pine is about $1.00/ftx6", so for a 12'x12' deck floor you're looking at $288 material cost. A composite deck will cost you $1200 for the same material cost. Labor to build a 12x12 deck will cost you about $1200. So you can pay $2400 for a composite deck, or about $1500 for a pressure treated pine deck. Then, the first time you clean/prep/powerwash/stain your lumber deck, you've spent $200-300 (assuming you own or rent a power-washer) and pray you got the glaze off the wood from the mill; so the price difference is deceptive, instead of almost $1000 its closer to $600. Then every 2-3 years, you drop $100-150 in upkeep and lose a weekend (in my case 2 weekends for a two tone pain job). Your break-even point is about 5-6 years. Anyway tx for the video; you too know the Tao of deck maintenance. Prep work=perfection.
Just finished my 3 decks using Deck-Over. A HUGE job! Biggest deck is 43 X 12', then another 6X4' and another 3X6. I sanded the decks but that's all then applied the Deck-Over with a roller and a brush on smaller decks but used an edger replacement pad to paint the sides of all the planks in between so got them all 'wrapped' around and a tiny brush for the sections of the cross boards you can see underneath. Yup, I cut corners but applied it thickly. I used almost 16 gallons to do all the decks - 2 coats. I also did it all by myself and being female and 70 years old recently, that's quite a feat! I like to think of myself as a 'young 70'! I never read any reviews before doing this either, so I truly hope it lasts for at least a few years. My deck is 21 years old and was very weathered as yours is. Right now it looks beautiful in Colony Blue with a white railing! Nice to hear something positive about this product for a change. But I can't complain if it doesn't last as I didn't use their deck wash and only sanded the deck. I''ll have some left over and wonder if I should apply yet another 3rd coat? Wonder if that would help peeling, etc?
the problem with this product and all similar is any infiltration from sides and even underneath..there is no escape for humidity...it will travel between wood and the skin of product..especially a snow melt..even if you get the sides..capillary action will infiltrate from bottom side. Other sealers will break down in the spots that are compromised..this stuff will have water travel for several feet..a bubble effect..before actually breaking down. its like shrink wrapping with plastic on 3 sides and not the 4 th...it s not good
You say it is not a big deal, but in another year all that will be blistering and peeling up where the cracks are. Painted surfaces should last a lot longer than 1-4 years. Also, most people having the failures DID do the proper prep, which is a real pain in the rear, and are furious because of all the work they had to do only to see it totally fail. Please do not make a statement that people with fails did not do proper prep when you do not know that to be a fact. The real issue here is that only newer, fully cured wood should be painted/stained/sealed. The older the wood, the higher the risk of failure. You cannot re-kiln dry old spongy wood on a weathered deck so it will NOT take up a product (any product) properly. You will have to "fix" it every couple years. Buyers need to stop trusting company hype and do their own research/reading before spending their hard earned money on products. Remember to NEVER jump on any new product right away: wait a couple years to read the reviews from others that did!. Buyers need to beware: YOU are the only one looking out for your money!
Hello, Thanks for your comment. I don't believe I made any statement specifically saying that fails are only a result of bad prep. Reality is, this is more like paint, than stain and its being installed outside. Climate, weather conditions, type of wood, humidity level's both during installation and afterwards, are all huge factor's. What I do know, is what I did for my install and how mine has turned out. If there is any moisture trapped in the wood, it will come out when the right amount of heat/sun/etc shine on it. This product acts as a seal, which does not allow the moisture to transfer through it (either in or out). What I know is that I painted(sealed) the boards on the sides as well, so the only way water can make it in through the boards is bottom up, which gravity helps take care of. I also did not use a pressure washer on my deck and I installed it at the end of an extremely dry period to ensure I was not trapping any moisture in the wood. I am also doing a review after 1 year, you cannot compare this to a 2,3,4 etc year review.
Would applying a coat of primer first be a good idea before painting an old, worn deck? Seems like that might improve the integrity of the wood and help the paint job last years longer.
Sherwin Williams has a better product, Deck & Dock elastomeric. If you want the thick type of deck coating. I wouldn't reccomend for nice condition boards, just for rough, cracked decking, that you want to get another patch of years. Instead of replace. The thick deck coatings I do not like on nice boards. Do natural stain or solid stain if solid color is desired. So much easier to re do!
Yes. that is exactly what I am going to do, I am curious to see if there has been any colour fading between the touch up and product applied over a year ago.
There will be color difference if you touch up but it might fade as it wears. Product will most likely be dry in the can if not stored properly. Maybe buying a few gallons every couple years and adding a fresh coat?
I wonder if just like Coca-cola, if Behr has a different formula in Canada then the Us? I know that Canada has a lot better products for the home then we do in the states, because of the cold weather.
It could be, however when it comes to paint products, I believe the US products are better as Canada has a lot more restrictions on chemicals. Which often means they are not as good, when it comes to bonding, durability, etc.
All.these people crying over there deck over product, are people who put it on too early and did not let there deck dry completely before using the product, so when you cover over a wet board, and then it tryst to dry pushing out the wet and making the deck over peel off. Your deck like you said was 20 years old super dry, and the product worked perfectly
Like someone else said I think the problem is People just expect too much and they're always trying to find the magic Product that will never fade or fail. This is in inexpensive and easy project to do you just have to make sure you do it properly and do the prepping properly also otherwise you will have problems.. If you wanna done right and you wanted to last well then you're going to have to stain the wood or replaced the boards which can get very expensive.. Any time you're painting a deck you're not always gonna get a very long lasting result you're always going to end up having to go back and do some touch up.. People just expect too much these days and they're a bunch of whiny little bitch's and just love to find reasons to Cut down a product
Exactly, most are using this on a deck on its last leg or at least getting there. I saw on another video there are lawsuits on rustoleum for a Similar product. Look people if you want a composite deck get one, but realize you will pay for it. If you want to get a few more years before replace this might work
I used Deckover too. It has been very bad. Not only does it pill off, but also it doesn't pill off all together, so you have to take it out little by little in many years before I can repaint the deck! It is so horrible! Never Never Never Never buy it!!!
Please don’t use this stuff followed all instruction to the T. Lasted longer then some other user said but it started peeling and it’s awful. Unfortunately didn’t hear about the lawsuit in time. Started seeing issues little over a year by 2 to 3 crap. Please do not use this stuff trust me mine looked as good as yours.
Behr revolver is absolute garbage. After repainting the deck every year for 4 years with that deal I switched to composit. Rustoleum is the best paint for your deck, if you spray it on.
Yoashuain1 did you spray in Restolium on your deck before switching to Composite? We used “Restore 10X”, it looked amazing that summer, but peeled the following year, and the year after that. I’m thinking about trying this stuff, or Composite...

The Deckover can't hold the wood together to keep it from opening up a crack more. But glad that is the only issue.
I think some people expect way too much. At least you don't have to retain your deck every year. Do a little prep and touch up and done.

Could it be used on an indoor plywood floor? (Used to be carpet, looking for cheap alternative and this paint is in the "oops" pile)

Just an FYI, there was a large class action lawsuit against Behr for this product. We had it on our deck, applied it correctly and is coming up in foot-long chunks. It has ruined ours and 3 of our friend's deck.
@@karlaselness272 it doesn't make sense to me why they would continue to sell a product that doesn't work and is prone to failure. There is also alot of happy people with the product so it can't be that bad. Guess I will find out, I just bought some for my deck today.

She works in a warehouse where they develop new coatings all the time and prep is 90% of the job, so she feels confident that we can make it work.
This product does have a lot of room for failure no doubt about it.
The key is to do the right prep, thick layers and make sure you do the sides of the boards( down between the cracks). When this product peels, it starts at the edge (or if nails pop out through it). By doing the sides of the boards, you are putting that edge where it has no wear and tear on it. Also it’s a lot harder for water to get between the product and the boards
I like to roll on and use a giant 4-1/2” stain brush and mop it in the cracks and lay it down. Works great Hitting big cracks before helps too
Your indtance probably worked better because there were so many cracks and roughness of the aged deck before rejuvenating. Thos cracks etc gave great purchase to the axrylic product. Smoother boards could be a problem.
Please need an update before I buy for my moms deck this summer!
35$ a can and it only lasts a year before it strips off in long sheets...this product sucks and the internet is filled with unhappy customers

Hello, did you use the deckover on the railing as well? And if so, how are they holding up?
I had DeckOver applied to my 8 year old deck. The handyman who did it first took the whole deck down to the raw wood then applied DeckOver. I live in a condo and have had no problems with my deck in 5 years. I think that is amazing! The condo assoc. inspects our decks every year and mine has passed inspection every year until now. I'm a widow in my 70's so I've done nothing to maintain it over the years. Now my questions. Can you tell me what need to be done to the deck to bring it up to snuff? I see no peeling but it is sun faded. Should I tell the contractor not to power wash? Should the contractor sand it? Can DeckOver be re-applied over the first application? Any help you can give me would be appreciated!

for anyone looking to use this, do NOT. I have a deck with countless cracks in it to which I used this paint expecting great results. It covered great and looked amazing right after painting it, but only 3-4 years later the paint EASILY comes off in long strips, breaking off with even something as gentle as sweeping the deck. DONT use it!! Put your money in a better paint

jessica same thing happened to me after only one year. And I washed my deck, rinsed well and let the deck dry thoroughly for 2 days before application and it lifted right off after one year.
I also used this product and it totally ruined my deck. It holds in the moisture and rots your boards. Behr uses the excuse that it wasn't properly installed which is so bogus. I have a south west facing deck so its hot and it started to bubble a week after it was applied, after the winter it had flaked and peeled it was a mess. Worst product ever I can't believe that behr continues to sell this crap with all the problems it causes. Now tr;y removing it another nightmare.

I had the same experience. My deck was 4 years old & looked like a 30 yr old deck after 1 season with Behr Deck over. It was worse after the winter, it kept coming off in big strips. It has been the worst/costly mistake. After trying to sand (disaster, balled up - never sanded off right) and repaint, this product continued to peel up. This year I am tearing off the railing & boards and installing vinyl. I did complain & they sent more of their awful product. I also heard there was a class action lawsuit, but I never followed through. Live & Learn : (
What y'all need to realize is that this is just paint
Really THICK paint, but paint nonetheless. With it being g so thick, there is no way for it to penetrate the wood. It stays on the surface regardless of how you prep it. Any break in that coating will let moisture in and that moisture spreads and has a hard time getting out. You don't have to read all the tech stuff to know what happens. Just use a little common sense.
There are so many videos of people who had bad experiences, even though I would love to use it if it worked, I may just switch to regular Behr solid stain from the Behr semi-transparent I have used for the last 25 years on my deck. (It sounds logical from what you found re: getting enough product in between the boards, since many just use a roller.....think getting in between the boards has saved my deck in lasting this long too.) Thanks for the video. (BTW...I noticed I don't see any recent videos so hope all is OK with you.)

Every negative review of this product starts the same " I rolled it on " yes a roller pad is sold for it. Brushing it on is the best outcome.
The instructions on the Deckover product I just bought from Home Depot recommends a 1/2" roller for a textured finish or a specialty Behr roller for an extra-textured finish. So I'm wondering where you got the notion that it can't be rolled. Was that in the original installation instructions? Also, I noticed in your original video that you didn't pre-fill the cracks before your first application. You seem to have skipped that necessary step to eliminate the appearance of cracks. Aren't these just the original cracks that were there before your initial application?
The paint guy at my Home Depot said to follow this sequence: Day 1 (morning): Strip and wash the deck, then let dry 24 hours); Day 2 (morning): Prefill cracks and then let dry for 4-6 hours; (evening): Apply first full coat and then let dry 24 hours; Day 3 (evening): Apply final coat.
Sounds like he “got his notion” from his experience using/applying the product-
In fact, he goes onto explain this notion of his his in -9:27, explaining that the product was so thick, he had a difficult time applying it with a roller.
Perhaps he should have said,
“I wasn’t able to use a roller.....” for all the lovely, “literal nitpickers” in the comment section.
But even if he had, I’m sure ya’ll would have managed to find something else. 🙄
Kristen Hill Have you applied the product, or are you just here to comment on something you have zero knowledge of or experience with? The manufacturer instructions specify the use of a roller. I used this product on my own deck, using the exact type of roller they specified and it went on exactly as it should have and the finish turned out great. Failure to read the instructions or incompetence in application does not reflect on the product but on the DIYer using it.

In your original it looks like you did the slats first. Then slats needed a touch up after the deck paint? Could you tape the base of the slats? Did you use the cleaner on the slats?
By slate, are you referring to the railing spindles? I did not use deck over on the railings (the black) I can’t remember now but it was another Behr deck paint product

I like your video. I did a similar TH-cam series on Behr solid deck stains, I got a similar (surprising) big response. I looked at your first video, and I think your deck was "just over the line" in favor of using a restoring product like Deck-Over. Sanding your deck to a better/smoother staring point would have been a lot of work, and my guess is you judged it to be "not worth it"; and I'd agree with you. Deck-Over is a rescue product, and despite what some goofballs in the comments say, it is not supposed to turn an ignored 20 yr old deck into a new composite deck. It is supposed to fill in cracks, prevent splintering, weather-seal, give a pop of color, and make the deck usable.
If I had a deck that needed Deck-Over, I'd consider how long I planned to live on that property. 2-3 years, sure. I'd use it. But If I was planning to stay more than 5, I'd consider rebuilding deck with Trex or another composite manufacturer, or use a premium hard-wood company like Ironwood.
Why? On my traditional, pre-treated, lumber deck, I had to re-stain it every 2-3 years (according to Consumer Reports, 2 years on a stain is really good). I ended up living there for over 10 years, and the cost of the stain/supplies (figure $500-800) and my time was not worth it. I sold that home 3 months ago, and despite no fewer than the initial application and 3 subsequent applications (4x in 10 yrs), the last in 2018 (a complete restain, spires and all), I had 2-3' of 3 boards in a corner go rotten. Its 2-3 hours repair work, no big deal; but it just goes to show that when it comes to decks, time always wins. All you can do delay the inevitable.
Composite decking has its own issues, but the up-front cost is worth it IMHO. Most of the cost in building a deck is labor, the material cost of PT pine is about $1.00/ftx6", so for a 12'x12' deck floor you're looking at $288 material cost. A composite deck will cost you $1200 for the same material cost. Labor to build a 12x12 deck will cost you about $1200. So you can pay $2400 for a composite deck, or about $1500 for a pressure treated pine deck. Then, the first time you clean/prep/powerwash/stain your lumber deck, you've spent $200-300 (assuming you own or rent a power-washer) and pray you got the glaze off the wood from the mill; so the price difference is deceptive, instead of almost $1000 its closer to $600. Then every 2-3 years, you drop $100-150 in upkeep and lose a weekend (in my case 2 weekends for a two tone pain job). Your break-even point is about 5-6 years.
Anyway tx for the video; you too know the Tao of deck maintenance. Prep work=perfection.
What’s composite?
Just finished my 3 decks using Deck-Over. A HUGE job! Biggest deck is 43 X 12', then another 6X4' and another 3X6. I sanded the decks but that's all then applied the Deck-Over with a roller and a brush on smaller decks but used an edger replacement pad to paint the sides of all the planks in between so got them all 'wrapped' around and a tiny brush for the sections of the cross boards you can see underneath. Yup, I cut corners but applied it thickly. I used almost 16 gallons to do all the decks - 2 coats. I also did it all by myself and being female and 70 years old recently, that's quite a feat! I like to think of myself as a 'young 70'! I never read any reviews before doing this either, so I truly hope it lasts for at least a few years. My deck is 21 years old and was very weathered as yours is. Right now it looks beautiful in Colony Blue with a white railing! Nice to hear something positive about this product for a change. But I can't complain if it doesn't last as I didn't use their deck wash and only sanded the deck. I''ll have some left over and wonder if I should apply yet another 3rd coat? Wonder if that would help peeling, etc?

the problem with this product and all similar is any infiltration from sides and even underneath..there is no escape for humidity...it will travel between wood and the skin of product..especially a snow melt..even if you get the sides..capillary action will infiltrate from bottom side. Other sealers will break down in the spots that are compromised..this stuff will have water travel for several feet..a bubble effect..before actually breaking down. its like shrink wrapping with plastic on 3 sides and not the 4 th...it s not good
You say it is not a big deal, but in another year all that will be blistering and peeling up where the cracks are. Painted surfaces should last a lot longer than 1-4 years. Also, most people having the failures DID do the proper prep, which is a real pain in the rear, and are furious because of all the work they had to do only to see it totally fail. Please do not make a statement that people with fails did not do proper prep when you do not know that to be a fact.
The real issue here is that only newer, fully cured wood should be painted/stained/sealed. The older the wood, the higher the risk of failure. You cannot re-kiln dry old spongy wood on a weathered deck so it will NOT take up a product (any product) properly. You will have to "fix" it every couple years.
Buyers need to stop trusting company hype and do their own research/reading before spending their hard earned money on products. Remember to NEVER jump on any new product right away: wait a couple years to read the reviews from others that did!. Buyers need to beware: YOU are the only one looking out for your money!

Thanks for your comment. I don't believe I made any statement specifically saying that fails are only a result of bad prep.
Reality is, this is more like paint, than stain and its being installed outside. Climate, weather conditions, type of wood, humidity level's both during installation and afterwards, are all huge factor's. What I do know, is what I did for my install and how mine has turned out.
If there is any moisture trapped in the wood, it will come out when the right amount of heat/sun/etc shine on it. This product acts as a seal, which does not allow the moisture to transfer through it (either in or out). What I know is that I painted(sealed) the boards on the sides as well, so the only way water can make it in through the boards is bottom up, which gravity helps take care of. I also did not use a pressure washer on my deck and I installed it at the end of an extremely dry period to ensure I was not trapping any moisture in the wood.
I am also doing a review after 1 year, you cannot compare this to a 2,3,4 etc year review.

Would applying a coat of primer first be a good idea before painting an old, worn deck? Seems like that might improve the integrity of the wood and help the paint job last years longer.

Sherwin Williams has a better product, Deck & Dock elastomeric. If you want the thick type of deck coating. I wouldn't reccomend for nice condition boards, just for rough, cracked decking, that you want to get another patch of years. Instead of replace.
The thick deck coatings I do not like on nice boards. Do natural stain or solid stain if solid color is desired. So much easier to re do!

Yes. that is exactly what I am going to do, I am curious to see if there has been any colour fading between the touch up and product applied over a year ago.
There will be color difference if you touch up but it might fade as it wears. Product will most likely be dry in the can if not stored properly. Maybe buying a few gallons every couple years and adding a fresh coat?
I wonder if just like Coca-cola, if Behr has a different formula in Canada then the Us? I know that Canada has a lot better products for the home then we do in the states, because of the cold weather.
It could be, however when it comes to paint products, I believe the US products are better as Canada has a lot more restrictions on chemicals. Which often means they are not as good, when it comes to bonding, durability, etc.

All.these people crying over there deck over product, are people who put it on too early and did not let there deck dry completely before using the product, so when you cover over a wet board, and then it tryst to dry pushing out the wet and making the deck over peel off. Your deck like you said was 20 years old super dry, and the product worked perfectly

Like someone else said I think the problem is People just expect too much and they're always trying to find the magic Product that will never fade or fail. This is in inexpensive and easy project to do you just have to make sure you do it properly and do the prepping properly also otherwise you will have problems.. If you wanna done right and you wanted to last well then you're going to have to stain the wood or replaced the boards which can get very expensive.. Any time you're painting a deck you're not always gonna get a very long lasting result you're always going to end up having to go back and do some touch up.. People just expect too much these days and they're a bunch of whiny little bitch's and just love to find reasons to Cut down a product

Exactly, most are using this on a deck on its last leg or at least getting there. I saw on another video there are lawsuits on rustoleum for a Similar product. Look people if you want a composite deck get one, but realize you will pay for it. If you want to get a few more years before replace this might work

I used Deckover too. It has been very bad. Not only does it pill off, but also it doesn't pill off all together, so you have to take it out little by little in many years before I can repaint the deck! It is so horrible! Never Never Never Never buy it!!!

Started seeing issues little over a year by 2 to 3 crap. Please do not use this stuff trust me mine looked as good as yours.

It's just a non-breathable plastic coating. Once water gets underneath, it will push the paint off. It's nothing special.

Behr revolver is absolute garbage. After repainting the deck every year for 4 years with that deal I switched to composit. Rustoleum is the best paint for your deck, if you spray it on.
Yoashuain1 did you spray in Restolium on your deck before switching to Composite? We used “Restore 10X”, it looked amazing that summer, but peeled the following year, and the year after that. I’m thinking about trying this stuff, or Composite...
