This video is about 11 months after cleaning with the "BEHR Premium All-In-One Wood Cleaner" and after applying the "BEHR Premium DeckOver Flat Top Wood and Concrete Coating". We followed all the directions perfectly, or at least we think as perfect as we could have.
After some research and investigating, we decided to go with the Behr Deck over paint to redo our deck. Our deck didn't have paint or a stain on it when we bought the house and we wanted to change that.
We used the "BEHR Premium
1-gal. All-In-One Wood Cleaner" before we painted the deck. We waited 3 days till we painted the deck, those 3 days were dry and in the 70-80s. The deck dried for another 2 days after painting before we had any kind of rain or moisture touch it. It looked great! That is for a few months, till it wasn't brand new.
I'm hoping this gets the word out because Behr wasn't able to help me and I'm hoping others don't get stuck with this like we were. I'm not sure what do use next, this was supposed to be the best stuff out there.

Haha Long story short....I did the same in Lowes Canada (Barrie Location) yesterday because my buddy was adamantly texting to pick him up so I scooted and thought I'll return!
I use it for many clients and I have had no issues with it in Long Island New York.
I use the same product, very good luck with it two years later no issues. Prep is the key! Use pressure wash, clean with TSP, deck MUST BE 100% dry before applying deckover this is a must for the paint to adhere...

J. Ohanian your right . So many spray it down with a hose and brush . They don’t let it dry all way thru . The prep work is key to it staying put . Iv used on several decks . One is 2 stories high on a up scale house . It’s been there 3 plus years still looks good.

Same happened to me with 2 coats and lots of sweat equity. I say deck lovers unite and file a class action law suit!!!!!!
There was a class action suit, visit www.DeckOverSettlement.com -- the deadline to file was February 27. But don't beat yourself up for not joining the suit because the award was a mere $45,000 to be divided amongst all plantiffs. You might have realized a dollar or two, according to my attorney. I got bids that ranged from $6,000 for labor only to $10,000 which didn't include replacement of the wolmanized joists or 4x4 supporting posts. As it turned out, we had to replace everything but the 4x4 supporting posts. We were able to retain them because only the top 1" to 1 1/2" had rotted. Fortunately, the deck to rail height was at 42" and the national residential code is 36" minimum. By cutting off the upper 6" of the 4x4 posts we were assured good wood and still met code.
The attorney never charged me a dime -- he was elated to find out about the product because he was planning to use the same type of product by Lowes -- their product is Deck Correct. Also, the attorney told me that the Behr Deck Over is a product of Home Depot.

Completely agree, this deck over from Behr is a peace a scrap, we follow the instructions and still a year later everything peel off!
Your deck is gray and weathered, so nothing will stick to it. Those gray fibres don't allow adhesion to the wood substrate, so the stain/paint will just peel off. I am willing to bet that if you peel off some of the product, and look on the underside of the peeled product, there are silvery gray, feather-like fibres. We had this happen on our decks with a quality, Benjamin Moore solid stain, so that's how I know. It had only been on less than a year, and was peeling even worse than your deck. To re-apply Benjamin Moore stain, I sanded all of our decks really well and got the grey off of them, and then 2 new coats of Benjamin Moore solid stain were applied. A couple of years later, and it held up really well, showing it wasn't an issue with the product, but with the weathering of the deck not allowing the stain to properly adhere. Hope this helps someone. :-)
Same here! Followed directions, used all the recommended products to prep. 1yr later our deck is destroyed.
Thanks for the look at your deck. I was close to putting it on our very weathered 14x24 deck. Between this and similar reviews online, I've reversed my thinking. I won't do this to whoever buys our house!
Anyone who is thinking about painting deck please read.
I am a professional painter and have used deck over successfully many times. Decks 5 yrs later still look amazing. The key is making sure wood is completely dried out before painting. Water in a spray bottle is the best way to tell. If a Windex bottle with water in it doesn't make dark splotches in the wood(meaning water is soaked in and leaves a discolored area) then the wood still had to much moisture in it to paint. If water from spray bottle beads up or just kinda sits on top of the wood it is to moist to paint. Some types of wood can take a week to completely dry out after a quick rinse with a hose. Also local climate can play a huge factor in this too. Areas with long stretches of high humity should use oil based products in my opinion. But different painters like different products. It is always good to get free estimates from a contractor bc many times you get decks painted for not much compared to the nightmare of doing a job wrong then having to fix it.

@AllGuts NoGlory yeah. I like using oil based products specific for exterior floor on floor boards of deck and a good exterior paint on hand rails. That usually works out great.

I wish I had checked reviews like yours before buying Behr Deckover just this afternoon. After watching your review and the countless other negative reviews, I decided that I am not using the paint and will look for another solution to my deck. I'm a house painter in Northern California, coastal, lots of moisture. I've used Deckover many times, textured and smooth. For that to peal within a year the substrate, deck, wasn't prepped properly, wasn't dry, still dirty, etc. I've never had this happen to me.
I'm considering using this like ASAP. Would you recommend this? And what tips would you give on the prep work?

Thanks for the video and all of the comments. I have cleaned my entire deck I was just going to Home Depot to buy this and start today with Deck Over. I guess I'll just stick with stain.
I used Deck Over about 5 years ago and it still looks great! I cleaned it and sanded it and the paint adhered beautifully. If you sand the boards so it is a fresh wood, the paint will stay and not chip. I also put 2 thick coats on the deck.

We did the stairs on our deck and are going on 3 years and they still look fantastic. I love deckover and are going to do our railings and the rest of the deck this week. I hope we don't get the same results!
Glad I saw your video. I was just about to buy this product to redo our deck. I will steer clear of it now! Thank you! I can't remember what we used about eight years ago but it still looks pretty good - way better than your deck after one year.
I'm glad you saw this. We wasted a lot of time on cleaning and applying to the deck. I don't want anyone else to have to go through that as well. We had to replace a few board recently from water being trapped under the paint and rotting them.
my behr deckover application lasted 6 years, I have to repaint it this year, not sure why everyone else is having issues
I had exactly the same results! Followed the instructions to the tee! Behr sent me replacement cans and so we tried it again. Lots of wasted time and money. We ended up stripping it and redoing the deck with Thompson's stain and seal. Much better results!

I used it on my concrete steps that had cracks on it. These stair are fully exposed to the the elements. It has been 5 years since I painted the stairs and it is still looking great! Not even a flake.

Ty, seems to me that most of the complaints are probably user error! Thank you again for responding. I have a deck on a flip house that I want to use this product on. I do want to make sure that the product lasts.
Used some on a tower blind three years ago and still looks perfect.It's not made for vertical surfaces but the red squirrels have not tried to chew it either.Well it sticks great to fresh vertical plywood anyways and seems to be critter proof.

I had the same issue. I contacted Behr. I sent them copies of my receipts, and they sent me a check right away. At least they stand behind their product.
Good to know. I use the Lowe's stuff twice. Lasted about three years or so each. Not bad the first one, the second one. We'll try the bear stuff this time. Quick easy fix for a couple years, looks good. Rather than replacing the whole deck or flipping everything. I only have a 20 by 20

I saw a few good reports about this one (DeckOver) and am glad I clicked on yours too, because I’m now going to put Composite decking in (Veranda brand from Home Depot is the least expensive and has a 15year warranty. I don’t wanna paint EVERY year🤷🏽♂️ lol) Thanks again bud👍🏽

thanks for posting. I've decided to just replace our 20 year old decking boards (approx. $300 + screws) after that I will just keep up with maintenance and never use a solid paint-type product that will just peel after a short time.
Same Experience. Storm came through and literally stripped a 2 foot section of board off. I just spent the evening pulling up the paint like it was tree bark. My next house will get composite decking as soon as the deck is end of life.
Same thing happened to me. Even used a grey just like that. My deck was bare. I used the cleaner to prep it before staining it. And a year later it looked just like your deck.
My best friend is a painter in business for 40 years in Buffalo NY. He and I chatted about the reviews and why people are having problems with any paint or stain on a deck. Moisture and lack of properly preparing the wood for any paint or stain. Most of these products hold up well if installed properly .
I love Behr interior paint but have not tried anything exterior. Your video saved me a few bucks and I thank you for your review. Please update if the new stuff works out better for you.
Glad to be of help! It's great that so many others have had the same problem and commented so hopefully we can have Behr fix this paint or at least to stop people like yourself from buying it.
Have used deck over on both wood and concrete, very good results on both.. The deck I did first was with treated wood approx 12 yrs old.Did not want to strip the top of this old wood so flipped the boards so the underside was used, saved so much time in the prep work, make sure wood is clean and free of any dusts or build up, brush applied two coats a few years ago and no problems with peeling .. The prep work is key, I also did a scrub coat of a bonding agent ( sica latex r )mixed with water and let dry before coating, my own idea to keep a consistant material to bond too. The concrete is a little harder as you have to be so so fussy on the prep work, again any patching material must have a broom or scuffed surface for good bonding. As well I waited for the temp to be falling as concrete does in gas and off gas as heat rises. So apply when temp is flling and it helps draw the deck over into the concrete, if applied when heat is rising you have increased chances in the product bubbling. again a scrub coat should be applied to the surface before applying the deck over. This is easy and gast to do and dry`s fast as well. Again had very good results.
Cant agree enough with this add, I live in Pennsylvania and have exactly the same experience. I did a thorough cleaning with Behr cleaning liquid
I also have experienced cracking in our Deckover finish from 2 years ago. I'm in PA with a full sun deck and covered gazebo. The finish still looks great in the covered gazebo area, but the exposed areas and steps especially cracked and peeled after only one year. The rep I spoke to suggested that the problem was all the rain we had gotten before application had not completely dried the wood even though it felt dry. I don't know. Too bad. The light color made the deck comfortable for bare feet. We can't afford Trex either.
I may have used a slightly different Behr product but with the same results. Thanks for your honest review. Like you, I would not recommend this. It doesn't seem to stick.

That's why I did this video. While I LOVE the way the deck looks after it was painted, it looks horrible now. WIth so much labor invested and money it's a shame that this isn't as well known.

Got to do it right. Deck Over works really well if applied right. My 2nd story wood deck and 1st floor concrete deck both have Behr Deck Over that has been down for over 5 Years and looks really great. I know of no product that you can just apply to a deck without doing the somewhat difficult prep work that will last.

Sorry for your luck, my buddy's comes up in chunks too! I bought a home 1.5 years ago and the deck looked recently "painted", not stained. It looked terrible within 6 months. I will have to sand and strip like crazy so I can get to clean wood just to apply actual stain. Oil-based, penetrating stain is the only way I'd do it, not any kind of paint.
I just finished power washing my deck and getting ready for final finish. I'm so glad I saw this video. I was considering Behr but after seeing this video, its a no go for me.

We are experiencing the same exact situation with this product and are now struggling to remove it.
Same thing here. Admittedly, my 25 yr old deck was pretty beat, but I took the time to sand it with 60 grit belt prior to all the steps. The only way this would work is if you coat each board, on all sides to totally encase each board prior to install. I recoated mine after year one knowing that it would fail again and I would have to go to trex anyway, which I just completed. NOW, I'm trying to salvage the old removed boards with a Harbour freight $300 planer but after one board and 9 passes through the planer with maybe 6-8 more for each board, its too difficult to eat through the paint /silicate gum the failed deck over material becomes (it sparks going thru the planer) to make it work the effort for 50-60 12'-16' 2x6's and I have to waste them into the landfill. This would not have been the case if I just removed the old homeowners silly deck paint idea... 1-2 passes and a little sanding and I'd be timber rich instead of paying $165 for the green bag truck to pick up ruined ugly but serviceable 2x6's. Irks me to no end and would not have made the decision to through good $ after bad if the Behr product worked as indicated... Even if I got another 5 years from it. Rule #1: wood needs to breath. Never paint a deck. Stain it. Coming from a wooden boat repair person (Saviour Boatworks -'cause "Jesus was a carpenter". Get it? save yer boat? I know, I'm a witty guy :)
Thanks for the review and comments. I am having a similar problem with Olympic Rescue It paint on after applying it two years ago on a three year old deck. I am looking for something that I can use to paint over it and it will not be "BEHR Premium DeckOver.
My previous deck rotted out from painting it. Once my deck was replaced I chose an oil stain instead. I did lots of research and used TWP. You should check out their website. They answer all questions about using their product . There are lots of colors to choose from as well.
I agree we have touch or repaint our decks and porch every year
I can't wait for the deck to be replaced, it looks horrible now and wood is rotting and we've replaced boards because of the moisture issues. Wish this stuff wasn't even created.

I had exactly the same problem with this Behr Deck Over. It started peeling off in sections after one winter. It was expensive and is a real ripoff. Now when is see Home Depot ads on TV, it makes me sick to think that I paid big $$$ for three cans of their shit Deck Over that ruined my 16" by 19' deck. Home Depot should stand behind the products they sell refund us and stop selling this stuff to unknowing customers. I phoned them and was told to re-purchase the deck over, remover and prep products and submit the bill to them. Yah right, no file number, no proof of their commitment to refund me plus my hours of time and effort . Due to this bad experience I now avoid Home Depot and advise my friends and neighbours to avoid them too.
it’s bc you didn’t properly prep before using it. if you don’t do it right this stuff comes off in sections like that but if you apply it correctly you’ll never have to do it again
Wish I'd seen this before I started painting my deck! I used Restore last time and spent a month getting the mess of peeling paint up off my deck this summer. I'm only half way done repainting my pool deck with this Behr Deck Over. What in the world do I use to finish now? I've spent over $360 painting a small pool deck now only to have it peel off.
You are not the only one. My friend's deck was also a total fail and they did ALL the prep work right. Bad product!
Also, Deckover claims that it can be used on concrete as well which we also tried, that peeled off as well, we were so excited by how it looked as we painted it on that we also tried it on our metal garage door and a few outside metal doors. And here's the funny thing, it adhered to the metal like nothing else we've seen and you can hardly even scrape it off!! It's wonderful on the darn doors but doesn't work at all on the surfaces it was made for!

I had the exact same experience as you did and I am also very angry that I was led to believe this was some superior product! I also made absolutely sure I followed every application step to the letter including buying the very expensive Behr cleaner. What really makes me mad is that I went into Home Depot with pictures of how bad it was peeling (I applied in September and by April it looked horrible) and my receipts to show it was just six months before, and Home Depot said I had to deal directly with Behr... I was just disgusted at that point, so I am very sorry to hear that you had no luck with them.… this product should be taken off the market!!!! DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!!!

I've contacted Behr and they are currently going to send me some replacement paint. But I still have to clean off the deck, sand the deck down and repaint it myself. It's a lot of work and if it would have just worked the first time I wouldn't have to do it again. I will post an update after I receive the paint and do some of the work.

I was on the verge of buying 8 Gal. of this stuff for deck and front walk. Then I started reading reviews and complaints. Then I heard about the class action lawsuits for multiple brands. Then I watched this video. Back to the drawing board, I guess.
@Moon Pie: Given that this stuff is crap, what is the best solution for covering small/medium cracks? The overall structural integrity of the wood seems sound, so we're not ready for total replacement yet. I'm leaning toward a oil-based solid stain at this point, to at least hide some of the wear.

Yup! Same happened to us! It looks exactly Like mine. Same story. I started seeing peeling the winter after and now it's been almost three years. Oddly at the same time, there are spots that were covered by the overhang and especially one spot under a plastic chest that is perfectly adhered! I have dragged my feet about doing anything about it and no longer have receipts but I am going to take it back to Home Depot and after that I will contact Behr and fight with them about it. I have spent back-breaking hours trying to scrape it all up. But some of it won't come off, while other parts are flaking off. It was sold as THE solution for old wood. So they can't complain about that. Like you, I used their deck cleaner and a deck brush. After that I used a bleach and water solution to kill any algae that was still on it. I'm into this about the same amount of money and a bunch of labor as well :( Pissed!

@@daveyboy8907 yep...I tried renting a sander, marginal results it's now smooth LOL, but still peeling, tried to get a friend who does floors to sand it with a belt sander he talked me out of it / refused ... he said the best thing to do is power wash it with a quality high powered power washer get as much as possible off then go to a paint store where the professionals go Not a Home Depot type place and get a recommendation for an outdoor deck paint. And painted over again! Either that or replace the entire M effer! So you're right a lot of money and a whole lot of time! I will spend every spare minute of my summer probably getting distech to look halfway decent again!
Stephen Nelson yep I did the power washer thing yesterday and it took about 75 percent maybe off.. Now I have to try getting the rest off.. If I could afford it I would buy trex decking as I just did a trex deck for a customer and its great stuff.. Screw home depo after this , the worker which has worked in the paint department for years talked me into this crap.. Should have never listened to this idiot..
The greatest regret of my life is buying Behr Deck Over Paint. I wasted so much money and worse so much time. It ruined my back peeling it off and my deck.
It is not the peeling the big problem . it is the time and work money to get removed from the wood, we are talking about days of hard work

I had the same problem. I did it o a new deck in the front and an old deck on the back. Same results after one year. I did everything the correct way. They said the problem was me.

I had the same problem. Totally followed the directions and prep before using the Deckover. It peeled off and left the wood splintered and awful and I ended up re-decking the floor and stairs. I'm in the process of stripping and sanding the railings. It bubbles and comes off in strips and leaves the wood in terrible shape. I live in Missouri and we have all seasons also. I'm researching what to use for the new wood flooring on my deck.
I need your advice. I am having a wood deck being installed now. What should I do? stain, paint or just seal? Should I do it immediately or wait few month for the wood to cure? Thank you
Yep, same results for three years running. However ... every summer i'd peal up the bubbling , peeling paint sections (it sticks real well to itself and previous year's paint - you can pull it off in long strips) let the surface dry for several days, then go down to Home Depot or Lowes and buy a $9 returned gallon of Deckover, of an acceptable color - there's usually a good choice if u check back often, and recoat the deck. Yes a pain, but cheaper and faster than other plans discussed here. And I like the changing colors.
I used the same thing and it lasted about 3 years before peeling. Given the price I was very underwhelmed by the results. Sad to see others had the same experience.
Yep same thing happened to us! it looked great initially but after 1 year paint began peeling and now 4 years later the deck looks like SH*T. Only thing for us to do is replace with Trex which will be done this week. And that is an expensive job. Hoping we will have good results and customer service.
I also had the same thing happen to me, 3 months and was totally cracked and bubbled, etc. Niw yo try and fix the problem. Mine was a covered wrap around porch on my home instead of open deck.
Just painted some planters was fixing to tackle the fence then deck. Going with stain now thanks. Applying it sucked...
It all goes back to the prep. Same happened to me, but I didn’t really invest enough time into the prep. The prep is exhausting and a lot of work. Most of us would rather pay someone else to do the prep. The product has an acid in it so you have to be careful. Your pets should be left inside while you are cleaning your wood. I live where it gets to minus 15 degrees. It’s all in the prep and you can’t miss one spot here or there. And I don’t work for Behr Incase someone is thinking that I do. Their videos make it look sooo easy, as with all DIY videos. Just sayin. Behr will stand behind their products Don’t start out with a rude attitude and they will listen to you and want to help, that’s my advice. Good luck.

I've just finished removing all the old paint off the deck. I plan to sand it to remove some of the issues of wanting to put this deck over on it and possibly stain it as others mentioned. After experienced what this "deck paint" is and what it does, I'm not going to try another brand. I wish it lasted at least a few years cause it does look great and feels good to walk on bare foot.

Craig Ireland what kind of paint do you suggest using and would you use a latex or oil based?
@@williammontana6565 I like the look of oil based semi transparent stains as a preference. If the deck has been previously coated with a solid stain (more paint like finish) the generally it will need to be done in a solid again. Though the option of color would be open.
I like Flood brand stains (in USA)
Dulux brand (Canada). Same formulation just branded under different labels depending on country you reside.
@Craig Ireland I’m in southern Ontario. Just bought a house with a deck and has this deck over and it looks awful. How can I get it off so I can use oil stain. Do you know any companies I can pay to remove it in barrie area and install deck stairs. Thanks. Deck is about 13ftx13ft.
@@CommonSenseAdult honestly buddy. New deck boards. Deck over is absolutely brutal to get off, you never will get 100% of it, and if you try to use an oil semi transparent stain, anything that doesn't come off will show right through and look terrible. Wish I had better news.
I tell my customers to always stay away from Resurfacers like Behr deck over or rustoleum’s version of it. The only deck resurfacer id ever consider using is gulf synthetics deck revive. Very expensive stuff but it actually will last you 10 years.
I'm literally living through Behr deck over and Killz deck over paint noghtmare. I'm glad to know it's not just me. I'm in Pennsylvania. How did you remove it? I have huge chunks/flakes pulling off and then sections I cant get it off with a metal spackle or pressure washer. I've spent 14hours on trying to remove this and I still cabt get it all. I have dry paint EVERYWHERE in the yard, trash bags full of it- it's a nightmare. I was told by Killz the bottom of the deck needed to be painted too. The deck is rotting from the paint loosely trapping water under it. What worked? Anything? Help!
I had the same experience it ruined my rear deck which is a 36 x 16 I don’t know what to do with it at this point

i just returned 4 gallons of Behrs today at homedepot because of all the bad videos on youtube i have seen,I wont take the chance and will go somewhere else and use a different product,,I also will use stain instead of paint
yes, still still trying to remove deck over - as you cannot put an additional coat on after time, you must remove the original coat!!! Very Very Difficult!!!
My deck started with some chipping after the first year. Now, after a few years its peeling up pretty badly. I contacted Behr. They are sending me another 5 gallons to redo it (along with 2 gallons of All-In-One Wood Cleaner). Nice of them to offer to send free stuff but they could not offer up a suggestion why it failed the first time. They just said "redo it and it will be better this time". I'm willing to do the work one more time since they are sending the materials, but next time I'll probably be replacing the wood and go back to using stain.
I agree it's great that they offered a solution, but we both know it will turn out the same way. I called and they also offered me more paint and unless they are going to come out and do it I don't want to have the same issue next year. Replace the time I lost by paint this myself.
Looks Like to me, when he is peeling it up, that pulverized wood dust that is left from pressure-washing it stuck to the chips. This means the coating bonded primarily with the dust not the "planks". In my experience it works great and lasts years if you pressure wash it, let it dry. The blow the bulk dust of. The use the recommend, dependent on the surface, cleaning product with a siding brush. finally rinse thoroughly with a garden hose.
Add Dutchboy and Pittsburg porch paint to the list ! I have spent hours trying to remove their mess from my decks.

had same issue with Cabot oil based semi solid.
the problem with our weather its that mess up a lot with wooden deck. your wood its like the conditions of mine, you need now to strip the paint off, clean it up again with any cleaning no matter, power wash it, need to sand it a little even tho they saying you dont need to after using paint strip, cover cracks and any screws with exterior wood filling because that will prevent for whater go in the cracks, creating moisture and paint to come out, then you need to sand againg and let it dry for 5 days or more no less then you free to paint but because of the condition of your wood, you need to use texture will work best

I agree after all this cleaning job... never ever use paint for the horizontal surface... always use stain...
Very similar experience. My deck was brand new, and I decided that rather than coat and seal, I would try the textured deckover. I cleaned according to their instructions using the cleaning solution, and now 1 year later, it's peeled and chipped like crazy, and is extremely embarrassing when guests see it. Behr did release a roller this year and my plan is to try and apply another coat in hopes that it'll bond better, but I'm very unhappy with the product.

Same color, same stain and EXACT same problem! Now I have to scrape, sand and re stain. NOT with Behr that's for sure. What other stain with good results has others used?

Im trying boiling water, followed by a quick scrape. I've tried power washing and am also looking at a commercial paint remover/stripper. I am not excited about using some that toxic. This is one of the worst products I've ever used.
