    I think that your booth is very charming and attractive! And I'm glad that dark wood ("the brown furniture", as I've heard it called) is becoming fashionable again. I still have a weakness for 1940s "Federal" furniture, and have a 1948 Drexel mahogany "Hepplewhite" chest in the grandsons' room. It kinda lends a 1980s Ralph Lauren Home vibe, which I love. One thing that your subscribers who grew up in the 1970s are likely noticing: while very pretty, the olive\avocado color on the desk looks a bit like the "antiquing" kits that our moms "updated" vintage furniture with in our childhoods. The most popular colors in those paint kits were that green tone and cream. Millenials won't notice, though!

    • @DesertDIY
      @DesertDIY  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That is so funny about that green color! I can definitely picture that now. I love your design style by the way!

      Yes! My mom painted a set of bunk beds, a desk and chair, and a small dresser in this antique green in the early 70's. After painting it green, she used a chip brush or tooth brush(I'm assuming because I was very young), dipped in black paint and then used her thumb sliding across the bristles to cause little fleckss of paint all over the surface. My now adult daughter took the desk and chair to college, as is! I don't think she has it any longer, but that is what I grew up with.

      Funny that you mention the avocado green phase of long ago ...
      I still use a diminutive chest of drawers that my Mom painted avocado green, added a faux woodgrain, and throughly coated in high gloss industrial varnish in the mid 1960's. It is still ... unique. As soon as our carport & my new workshop is completed (yeehaa), I plan on finally revamping the little chest to be a bit less groovy.

    A secretary is my favorite type of furniture piece. I have two. I like the doors attached and can leave them open to show what is inside. I painted one and the other is the dark original wood color. I put wallpaper inside both but I’m considering putting mirror into the dark one or painting the dark inside space a color. I think it is great that you sell your pieces for such incredible discounts because they have been so improved.

    Hi Cory. Nice job on your flips. Before painting the hutch, I would take the top loopty loop piece off. Then see if it sells that way. ~Cathy

    I think your flips look great! One thing I like about that hutch is the flower motif. But, I could see where someone might want a more plain look-- you could consider taking that top portion off, so it's flat on top. That would also allow for more staging space.

    • @DesertDIY
      @DesertDIY  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes, great eye! I thought those flowers were so unique. Never seen that before.

    Old English in the dark walnut would really work well on the hutch.
    Today most people want small furniture for smaller spaces. I would cut the fancy top down.

    Yes I’d paint it. 😹 I don’t like the red tones of Mahogany and cherrywood. I’m not fussy on bleached wood either. You can’t go wrong with paint. You can use any colour that goes with your decor. I love natural wood as well. 💝

    Loving your booth❤ I’m Loving the lemons-wanna do that green color on my iron garden cafe table & chairs!! And then round cushions in Lemons for the chairs!! As far as the hutch goes- do not like the colonial look at top or the reds in it. It does what it does for now. Door stuff doesn’t bother me. Me personally, I’d paint it that beautiful green first even with the colonial vibe at top. Resin the tops of shelves to look like marble! I would use this as my live houseplant display-that’s why I would resin the shelves. Water proof. Then I would add my plants and drap over the top colonial stuff!! Add some butterflies, dragonflies, birds, frogs, mushrooms, moss balls or just wood balls!! I’m liking this idea soo much. Have a hutch with cracked window!! Hmm Corey❤🪴🌸🌴🌸🌿 Love that your kids are learning from you & your husband!! Thinking about that, a nice kid project. The little terra cotta pots-3 inch? With the saucer. Seal in and outside with poly (after cleaning of course!!) acrylic paint, black sharpie, small bag of dirt and small bag of grass seed. Let the kids make a face on terra cotta- whatever face. Seal again. Dig into the dirt and spread the grass seed!! Can get the seed starter kit too where you water them and they start to rise up like dinosaurs! A little pet spritz bottle ( Walmart) & kid scissors. Once grass is growing, can cut the hair ( grass) to Mohawk, short, anything!!❤❤❤

    I love the dressing table/desk (I have a desk, turned to a dressing table at home). I was sad to see that you had not filled in the chip at the front. It would only have taken a dab of mahogany wood filler. I would probably have taken off the piece at the top of the china hutch message easier to fit in the lower ceiling homes of modern houses. You do a wonderful job and the chair was a great tutorial for me. I have2 I need to do when the weather gets warmer. Both for my home. Thank you for sharing your talent once more. Your son was so sweet. How hold is he now? He will make a good camera man as he grows up.😊

    Yes! I would love more booth content! The hutch looks ok, but it looks weird with the holes from the doors. I would skip the upper part, paint the lower cabinet either black or a neutral lighter color. It's too big! The desk and chair looks really nice, the homemade color was gorgeous! And the clip with your son was hilarious!

      I like how the hutch turned out but the holes from old hardware really stand out. You had to rush so it's understandable. I had that exact same hutch. I passed down my large carnival glass collection and the hutch to my daughter. Mine does have the doors still, but seeing yours without them, I think it looks better without them. Your little man is adorable 😊 When you mix paints, do they have to be the same base? For instance, can an oil based paint be mixed with a water based. In the video, were the green and the yellow chalked paint? I know the celery colored one was chalked paint. Thanks for all the informative and entertaining videos you do! And you're still painting and not getting paint on your clothes! You must be a super hero because I still don't know how you do it🤯

    • @DesertDIY
      @DesertDIY  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Thank you so much Teresa. I do get paint on me every once in a while. Usually when I'm in a rush! Haha. Yes as long as they are both water based you can mix any paints together whether that is chalk paint or latex. I try not to mess with oil paints in any way since they are very picky about what works with them.

    If you remove the pediment from the top of the cabinet and keep the moulding… it would modernize the profile

    I would have removed the decorative piece on top. It makes it look larger and heavier and dates it. I might have also removed the filagree on the corners. You’re right. Mahogany is too red for most people’s taste (including mine). I might have stripped it and stained it a dark walnut or even espresso. You always do fabulous work!

    I inherited my grandmothers dining room table, six chairs, hutch and buffet. It was in really bad condition when I received it and I was so upset and hated it. After many hours of cleaning and using restore a finsh on it, it is one of my favorite rooms of the house. All the other furniture in my house is oak. I have also recently received her bedroom suite also. It is also one of my favorite rooms also.

    For the hutch, I would take of the top peak thing (don't know what to call it) so it could go with any decor. The hutch I inherited from my in-laws, I painted in Beyond Paint Poppy. I am at this moment painting my son's old dark dresser (espresso color tall boy) in FolkArt One paint in Aloe Mist with a decoupage on the front (steampunk cat).

    How absolutely precious your son is. A future flipper/diy'er i feel. Just loved how involved he was and language skills for his age are truly amazing. I love that you invikve your children in what you do as it will provide amazing life skills. Cant believe how well he did with the camera as well. Definitely an amazing little helper you have. I love the desk combination of colours, with the awesome hardware too. The reupholster of the chair was a perfect way to modernize it but keeping the integrity of its age also. The hutch i can really imagine in soft girly pastel colours and making the top into a crown/tiara focal point. I loved this video and was the first of yours i have watched and i subscribed straight away. Thank you and keep up the beautiful work you do xx

    If the hutch hasn’t sold yet, you may want to stage it differently. All these pieces are beautiful, but I am always drawn to pieces that have some greenery or fake flowers in them. I think I enjoy the staging as much as I do the flipping process though.

    Best video thus far for me 👍. Hutches are outdated IMO. I have a gorgeous Mohagany hutch, I'm strongly considering separating the top and bottom, painting and only keeping the buffet bottom portion. The Cherry wood too is also Not wanted by anyone it seems, just like the Mohagany wood (redish/ oarnge undertones) but if you love it, keep it because it doesn't matter the trends if that's your jam and it makes you happy ☺️. I'm painting my cherry dressers personally but I agonized over it initially. Life's just too short to hate your space and have these massive pieces of furniture clash with the style you're going for. I dont think matchy match furniture works however anymore in the same rooms/spaces. If folks buy or paint multiple pieces to create a cohesive look I suggest spreading the pieces out through your home. Great video.
