I was presented with an opportunity from my superintendent to go from an AP of an elementary school to an AP of a High School within my district. What advice would you give for the major differences in these 2 different worlds? Thx in advance!

This is a great opportunity for you. My first thought was that you have shown the ability to lead in a larger, more complex environment. The elementary environment has its inherent complexities, but high schools are awesomely complex spaces to lead in. That is a challenge but also a gift. My background includes serving as a high AP and high school principal and it was by far the hardest and also the best jobs I ever had (excluding the superintendency 😊). My best advice is to seize the opportunity and as a new leader in the environment. Move into coach mode. Learn people and departments strengths and areas of growth. Listen a lot. Ask lots of genuine questions. Honor and value the expertise of the faculty and staff. They will have a ton of pride and commitment to the school and it will serve you well to be seen as someone who wants to add value to the team. I’ve got more but let’s start there. 👍🏾. Best of luck and please keep me posted on how things are going.

I love this - However, staying late too many times does push from family time. How do you feel about splitting those late days between staff members? I understand and have stayed late and offer to stay late, but I also believe in work-life balance. Can you make a video on that? That is a reason we lose a lot of teachers.

I too believe in work life balance. It is crucial to sustainability and longevity in school leadership. I am a huge proponent of being very intentional about the design and implementation of extended work day activities. Sharing that amongst school leaders is crucial. Also being very proactive with staff to be sure activities are planned and calendared early gives the opportunity to build a fair and equitable duty calendar.
Let me add this topic to my list of ideas to create an episode on. Thanks for the recommendation. 😊
