I agree with the handshake but I noticed that some people don’t like to give handshakes and I understand but a handshake can make a big difference for sure. Thank you

Jennifer, you make a good point...some folks are uncomfortable with a handshake for sometimes a personal or cultural reason. However, I would strongly recommend continuing with initiating handshakes because it will be readily accepted much more often then rejected. Furthermore, it has a profound effect on the way people feel about interacting with someone after the handshake.

I am an experienced administrator, but for some reason as of recent I am having complete brain fog when I am in interviews. I practice prior to the interview and really talk myself throughout, but again, in the actual interview I babble. You would think I have not been in education for as long as I have. Do you have any advice in that regard? Thanks 🙂

Hi Heather! Thanks for being a part of our community and asking for assistance. I have two thoughts…have you asked for feedback or a debrief after interviews? I ask because I’m trying to see if you perceive that you are babbling or if you have received feedback that you are babbling? Many times we are harder on ourselves than the interviewers assessing us. If you haven’t gotten formal feedback I might suggest doing that after an interview.
My second thought that I coach folks on is their speech pattern when answering questions. When someone babbles it could be they are speaking in a spiral pattern. They start on point and begin to talk then they deviate off of the main point and then at some point come back to the point and then they deviate again and it cycles again and again. My suggestion for this is to develop very linear responses. Point 1 then point 2 then point 3 etc…it will teach you to answer questions directly and succinctly. My final caution is to not get too linear because then you could come off cold and robotic. The key is finding the sweet point in between linear and spiraling.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have further questions. 😊

@@gordonamerson28 Thank you for replying. I am definitely hard on myself but I just know I am not answering their questions thoroughly. While I have never asked for feedback, I have ALWAYS sent thank you/follow up emails.
