    Great video, I was an ELA teacher for 8 years and I’ve now been a school counselor for four years, im currently finishing my district’s prep program to become an AP, very helpful video!

      I was considering switching to counseling. Do you wish you hadn’t made that switch? Did you love it?

    • @bryangomez1384
      @bryangomez1384 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@englishwithaltini wow a lot has changed so I got my degree and passed the exam to become an AP but my district has another program afterwards to become AP and they didn’t pass me through that program. I was given the option to redo it in 4 months, but I was like naw I’m good lol! Took the LSAT, scored a relatively decent 158 and I start law school in the fall to become a lawyer lol!
      But back to your main question, I enjoy being a school counselor, but honestly if I had to do it again I probably would have gotten the master in social work (MSW) over the masters degree in school counseling for a variety of reason, to include but not limited too: mobility (more job options than just working in schools), higher paying job, versatility, ability to open a private practice after becoming an LCSW and the list goes on and on lol.

    I work at some schools where the AP was more approachable than the principals themselves.

      As an educator, please do not get into admin without being in the classroom first. Those are the WORST ones and don't last.

    Your inspirational videos encourage teacher leaders to develop if not sharpen their skills when considering entering the administration arena, and you manage your time when summarizing and being direct. 👍👍Would you consider adding disciplinary as an umbrella considering the psychological effects students experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic?

    • @TyshekaMcKinnie
      @TyshekaMcKinnie  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Tysheena
    I really enjoyed your video. This video is extremely informative. I have been watching all of your videos. I have been teaching for over 15 years. I am currently working towards preparing to become an AP. I feel that I may not extremely prepared, but I am up for the challenge.
    Quick questions: What can I do to make sure I am prepared for the interviews? I need tips on how to prepare with the curriculums.
    I want to be hired as an API?
    What does it mean?

    • @TyshekaMcKinnie
      @TyshekaMcKinnie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, Vanessa! Thanks for watching the video.
      My motto is to become the leader you desire to be... in other words "start before you're ready." If you have a desire to become an Assistant Principal:
      1. Vet an awesome AP and make them your mentor.
      2. Ask to shadow in leadership meetings.
      3. Become comfortable with speaking to staff members and community members.
      4. Ask to lead a meeting and/or develop a system.
      There are many things you can do to gain foundational skills of becoming an AP so that you are not blindsided by the role once landing the position. I also recommend subscribing to my newsletter as I'll be launching a course to tackle this.

      they are evil....absolutely evil. Also, as a black dominican woman, many women of color who are assistant principals and principals have power ego trips, and want to use their sororities to bully others who are not in those same organizations. Come to south Ga, you will see this very commonly in the southern states school systems. Its absolutely disturbing.

    Assistant principals do nothing except dump everything on their counselors....thats what they do. My mom was also a school counselor for 38 years and always told me that asst. p are lazy and want to really be principals but dont want to do the work to get there. I am a school counselor, and I am so tired of these assistant principals making counselors do ALL OF YOUR WORK. Not ok! Its my 15 year, I have been to atleast 3 schools and all of the assistant principals are the same: lazy.

    • @englishwithaltini
      @englishwithaltini ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What are some of the specific things they dump on you?
      Teacher here curious about counseling and the work of an AP
