I was on a 92 footer displacement TSDY travelling from the Canaries to Barbados when we had fouled props from a fishing net. The seas were still pretty high from an earlier storm. We were incredibly close to capsizing over the next 24 hours. If you had offered us the choice of being in a self righting boat we would have snapped it up in a moment.

The keepers of the Dashew legacy have quietly established a very strong tradition of well built aluminium boats in the South Pacific. would love to see you do a film on the Circa Marine 24... They have two hulls already built 'Mollymawk' and 'Deo Juvante' which remind me of the Land Rover Defender.
I was going also suggest taking a look at the offerings from Circa Marine. These look like very capable world cruisers.
I thought Dashew has ceased production of their excellent FPBs? We can clearly see where Arksen get their inspiration from.

Very good and informative video. Big mistake of the Danish builder closing contact wit you; on the opposite side, Bering and Arksen opening widely their hatches to you. Their two videos are a must see.

I love Nauti guys/nauti styles!! They do a great job of showcasing yachts in person. Thanks for the comparison. I do know that this couple plan on using crew for theirs for charter. Not sure if they would need the crew just for themselves. Both capable captains. Anyways!! I’d hit that like button a million times so I could be a client you’d represent. Maybe one day?

I'm quite ashamed (as a Dane) that I wasn't aware of the Knud Hansen explorer either 😳 In my defense, designers of huge commercial ships weren't really on my radar. I do like the lines of that little explorer though. And, really looking forward to your video from Bering!

I've been enjoying the fantasy of owning an explorer yacht for a few years now, knowing I want it to live off the Pacific coast in Canada, winter in the Caribbean, and explore the Northwest Passage at least once. Two of the yachts I continually return to are the Arksen 85 and the Bering 77, so it's nice to see I'm looking along the right lines. What other yachts would be worth considering?
I left a like and a subscription, too, so don't let me down with that hint at it bringing further prosperity! 🤣
i've seen Wally has 2 500GT concepts (new?), would be nice if you could cover those 2.
I have been following Nautistyles for years, and now Nautiguys as well. It is completely beyond me how they can afford to build a Bering 75. I now see them flying on private jets, too! What changed from the old days of them living on a 45-foot liveaboard in Marina Del Rey? TH-cam doesn't pay that well!! Perhaps they gently pressed your like button, and it did bring them wealth and happiness?
Anyway, if I were in the market for an explorer yacht, I would have to select the Bearing 80. But, while not an owner operator boat, I would give very strong consideration to the NuMarine XP37. Thanks, David!

The Nautistyles folks, as far as I can tell, are an EXREMELY hard working pair. If you combine that with working smart and also being smart about saving most of what you make and investing it wisely for a decade or more, a Bering 75 bought as a business expense is more than feasible. My guess is the two of them work about as hard as Elon Musk.
Some of it is because they are involved in multiple ventures. There were a few videos where they mentioned they have a few marine companies - one is a dealership and I suspect one is a consultancy. I think they also mentioned that they are doing a charter to own program with Bering, so it reduces their initial cost.

My husband and I are on the market so this title jumped out at us! We have bot sailing vessels from small to large. I'm ready for a motor yacht, but we can't agree between 2. The idea of just the 2 of us is a dream, because next year we start a family. I'd happily charter such a vessel, to experience a motor yacht with just us 2.
I was injured on our last sailing voyage, so eager to switch to motors.

From the images it looks like Arksen is build in the tradition of Dashew LRCs. I would be interested if there is some connection and what might be the differences and advantages/disadvantages of an Arksen. Can't wait to see Nick going "classic Bering" :D

I'm really interested in more details about the Arksen. Just seeing the solar integration on the superstructure has grabbed my attention and I can't wait to learn more about her power systems.

You need to be aware of their T&Cs. They require owners to donate part of their craft time to marine researchers.
I was surprised you did not mention Bering in the comparison with dutch built! At the same time it hard to mention everyone.
What about the nordhavns? 40 and 41? I would appreciate the compassion with the Bering and arksen.
6:00 Well if a yacht builder plans with dedicated room for a crew (of more than two), then you probably should get crew even if not legally required to.
Also want to add that if you are looking for an explorer yacht with sails which you can operate as a couple, then Garcia Yachts or Bestevaer come to mind. Oyster (way more luxurious than the two mentioned earlier) might work too as many of their yachts like Firebird have proven their high high latitude capabilities.
On a completely different note:
A video with regards to the age of a used yacht would be super cool: So what to bear in mind when buying a 5 year, a 10 year, 20 or even 30 year old yacht? Sure much of that also depends on the builder and how these boats were maintained but maybe there are some rules of thumbs.
Garcia yachts and Oscars can come with crew cabin, does that mean you need a crew with them? your reasoning is absolutely asinine

The whole point in buying a yacht is to live in luxury, not to make oneself miserable with petty subsistence chores or to risk one's life and yacht at the helm. If I have the money to buy an explorer yacht, then I should also have the money to afford a captain or first mate for around $60K to $110K/year and crew members for $24K to $36K. At the bare-minimum, I could operate in safety with just the captain and in luxury with, perhaps, 1 to 2 crew members.
If I have the money, then I'd buy the Alucia/Odyssey which also has a hangar for a helicopter and a small submarine and could also be modified to refuel the Grumman G-111/Hu-16 amphibious aircraft.
If I don't have the money for the Alucia, then I'd settle for an 80ft to 120ft sailing yacht, like the Ophira V, Spirit of Venice, or the Palmer Johnson 92 ketch with a centerboard.
The only difference between sailing and motor yachts is in the operating expenses. A sailing yacht could cost as low as $500 to $6,000/day to operate, whereas a motor yacht would cost from around $800 to $350K/day, depending on the size.
the bering 80 looks different, have they changed the hull design on this? looks alot like the 100.
Good video. Tough to make comparisons in this way because builders have multiple models. Yes Bering 80 is a barrel shape, but the Bering 70 is wedge shape similar to Arksen. Comparing Bering 70 to Arksen is a more Apples-to-Apples comparison?

Wow! Very cool! Forgive my ignorance but with such relatively low cruising and or top speeds is it true that when crossing oceans or what have you during rough weather and strong currents, you are practically sitting still or more at the mercy of said elements? I've seen a few interviews from seasoned sailors saying that a minimum of 14 to 16 knots is best for such things. I would appreciate any feedback. Also, could you do a comparison between a Nordhavn and a Bering? Pros, cons etc of each? Love your channel!

If/win I am wishing to order such a yacht. I want to give some clearance to both 23 m and 100 RGT. This would cover me on both sets of common regulations for owner operators. I probably be looking for something. In the concept of a 95 t Darwin with an icehull designed theoretically for not just short but single handed operation.
The hybrid system you mention on the first yacht is a very unique design. It allows one motor to run both props (efficiency mode), or each prop to have their own motor. The motors are powered by the generator (when active) or on a limited basis by the battery bank (silent mode). Although the range is incredibly annoying to locate, the designers have stated that each of these two can sail 3x the distance per liter of fuel, when compared to a similarly sized traditional displacement design.
They were built for two brothers ( Lars Thrane and Per Blinkenberg-Thrane), who plan on offering the same design to the market.

Look up the blogs for Buffalo Nickel and Möbius, one is an Original Dashew FPB and the other a self build Dashew style boat both run by a couple. Also look up the Nordhavns, there's a few channels of couples living on them.

Still cracks me up that Arksen still shows their 85' yacht with a Nemo sub on the deck. A sub that weighs over 5000 lbs. Launched with a pole davit. But that also ties into Bering too. When you did the livestream with Alexei I asked if Bering would ever consider making a support vessel like Alia and Dunya did and Alexei said No, you could just get an 85' and use that as a support vessel. Something I repeated back to Victoria, because I asked her about it. Then Victoria did a video where she asked him a bunch of questions and she asked him about ridiculous requests or something and he said that a customer wanted an 85 and to carry a sub and have a helipad. I think he was talking about me, but he said the 85 couldn't carry one. So David, when you visit Arksen can you ask Jasper if their 85 can carry a Nemo sub and if that tube crane could pick one up? And when you and Tristan are on the Bering, maybe ask Alexei again about a support yacht. Maybe ask him if the 85 can carry a sub and see what he says, lol.
heh heh... That Nemo on the Arksen always makes me go hmmmm too. :) Anyway I think Alexei consistently suggests using the 28' Hysucat as a support vessel for the Bering displacement boats. He even gives examples how they actually use it at Bering. Its pretty nice. Silent got in on the game and partnered to build an electric version (The Silent 28) .... pretty sweet. I am simply dying to see that Arksen film though. Want one!!!! I am not YET a qualified buyer but i did click that like button

Two things on my dream list are a mini sub, and a small plane like the one Victoria and husband showed in their #NAutistyles channel some time ago. Wouldnt that make your boat a hot charter option :-)

The Arksen 85 rear deck has allowance for 8000kg payload and the sub would be launched with a hydraulic crane.

For a couple wouldn't the smaller Arksen, say the 75 and the Bering 65 or 72 be better and less hefty for a couple to manage?

9000 nm on 18,000 litres is quite remarkable. But as it’s an all aluminium construction it will be considerably lighter than the Bering. The hull won’t be as strong either, so it really does depend on how you intend to use your yacht as to which is better

I'm surprised that they "smaller" yachts were not promoted like Nordhavn, Fleming, Azimut Magellano, etc!
What is the limit for a couple to live on a boat in length or size? And does it make a difference if the couple only travels along coasts?
Big difference. Coastal cruising does not require an explorer yacht as such, and it’s amazing how far you can go hugging the coast in Europe. A lot of couples enjoy taking their boat from Britain through the French waterways, or all the way around to Monaco…Italy…and beyond!
@@Yachtsforsaleblog That's what my parents are all about! Next year they will buy a yacht and three years later they would like to go to Spitsbergen and two years later to the North West Passage. Or just stay in the Mediterranean? Parents, that's what! Is it possible to handle a 29m yacht as a couple?

@@panpiper how is girth affecting the measurement? Like I say I’m yet to hear an explanation of how this rule works in practice. Tried asking @nautiguys during their Bering build but no answer. All these yacht builders talk about their boats being under 24m, but none seem able to clearly explain how they adhere to the rule.

My favorite is still the Benetti B.Yond 37 meter expidition yacht. In my opinion you can't traverse the world in anything less than 35 meters?!
Ok, last question. I had asked in your livestream with Jasper about the possible use of Flettner Tubes, or wind sails, being used on their yachts. You lost the question though and never asked him about it and then I e-mailed him and he didn't respond but you did a video a while ago where I think a catamaran was going to use them, so maybe could you bring it up to him again? They seem to think very forward so I would be curious if they would ever consider using them. They greatly increase fuel range. Not pleasant to look at, but they save you 30-40% of your fuel
Or go full sail and eliminate 90\95\99% of fuel costs.
IMO kite sails have great potential for long range motor explorers.
The Arksen is massively impressive, especially the full self-righting capability.
However, if I'm travelling 5000nm+, I'm spending weeks at sea...
...I'd rather do that in more space and luxury.
The Bering it is, for me.
Hybrid electric system . Vessel can run on diesel engines or for short periods on electric power from batteries. They don't need separate drive shafts .The engines will recharge the batteries. This is different than your Wider yachts, which use generators like on cruise ships to drive electric motors to power the propellers.

Looks like Bering are the market leader, I think the onboard real estate would lead to a better journey, however, Knud E Hensen needs further investigation. I bet you end up onboard the 85 with Rico and Victoria the Nauti guys, what could go wrong 😂😂😂😂😂
I think the market leader by far for this kind of yacht is Nordhavn for production boats. For one offs its Vripack

Just went through the webside and other articles, for Knud E Hansen, to see if I could find some thing about the range. What I did find out is that the ECO speed is 10 knots, and they do use 40L diesel an hour at that speed. Another thing they did develop, is that when crusing long distances, you can use one 1 engine, but that will power both propeller, due to this diesel electric system.
So to reach a range of 7000 NM as the Arksen yacht, then it should only have to have a 700L tank, this does sounds very litle.
that would be 28 000 litres of diesel. 7000NM divided by 10 knots then times 40 litres.

Gross tonnage measures total enclosed space. Outdoor spaces are not included. Worth bearing in mind when comparing boats.
Running it is one thing. Not massively excited about cleaning it though.
Just make sure you're stronger than your partner and you won't have to.
Someone needs to invent a cruise in yacht wash. Like a drive in car wash. 😊
Actually you make a very valid point. I think a lot of owner operators end up getting help with the wash downs and cleaning.

Is there a market for not a ship designed for exploring the world but essentially a houseboat that's safe enough to spend most of it's time on the east/west coast and the occasional trans-oceanic crossing such as going from Maine to the the Italian coast for the winter time?
I'm not super knowledgeable about boats but I know that it's super dangerous to bring a house boat even out into the great lakes due to the hull configuration.
If I had to design a yacht it would have to focus on endurance such as not requiring to dock for a month or two due to provision storage, not requiring a professional captain to safely dock the boat, and a small garage for a golf cart to go shopping with when ever you do decide to dock because you've run out supplies such as toilet paper, you need to pick up your Medication after calling it in with your doctor, pumping out the sewage.
You will not find a 'houseboat' with ocean crossing capacity. You are looking at a fairly substantial boat for that. Houseboats are built for relatively calm waters. Frankly, I'd be very reluctant to have a houseboat on anything other than fresh water.
@@panpiper That's a shame because it would be such a cool retirement or a life style for those who're willing to sell the house to live on the water for full time.
Just imagine taking your house out to the Caribbean to go deep sea fishing from your lazy boy that's on the rear of the boat.
No reason you couldn’t ship a house boat from Maine to France and go through the waterways there. Not too many inland waterways in Italy though…unless you go to Venice…which may present challenges of a different kind!
One thing about Aluminium it work HARDED even sea smashing into Boat will do it . Ali boat can get side Tears open on the welds .Look USA naval Ships all trouble had with Aluminium ships CRACKS turn up
What about Northern Marine. Boat Test tested the 57 RPH. They tested it at trawler speed of around 4knts it range is over 12,000 nm at around 6kts its 7800nm at 8around 8kts its around 3000nm on only 2600 gallons of fuel. Though some of the stuff I have seen on Arksen makes it VERY appealing, but EXPENSIVE, but the draft of the Arksen is nice too at under 6ft I believe. Nordhavn is a good go too for trawler types.

Great list. But you might want to think twice about places such as Mallorca. While the island is great, you're going to fall under the Spanish tax regime which is one of the worst. From taxes on buying/selling properties to income and inheritance tax, a shame.
I am thinking Arksen and waiting to see what happens with them. Bering yachts will not right past 90 degrees. Arksen will self right. Arksen is so much more economical but what I have seen so far is that the Arksen internal fitout seems lacking and industrial. Id like an Arksen but fit out like a Bering. I will reach out to you in the next few months as I want a broker. Local brokers here are useless and actually ridiculed me for what I wanted. Ironically Nautiguys have used much of what I wanted, if not everything. I suffer mold issues and MCS so I have some very high standards.

I think your title should say ‘by a couple’ not as a couple. The latter means running two yachts together.

Work hard, work smart, work lots. Save at least half of what you make and invest it intelligently (buy and hold Tesla). Keep it up for ten to fifteen years. Done.
FYI, volume is not measured in tonnes. You need to go back to school.
Gross tonnage is a measure of volume. Google it.
