Could This $20 Million SuperYacht Be The Ultimate Expedition Yacht?

- In one of my previous videos, I talked about the exceptional range of an expedition SuperYacht that had been converted from a degaussing ship, that was originally built in the late '70s.
This great vessel had a range of 20,000 nautical miles.
When I made that video, I remember thinking that surely this yacht, with its 20,000-mile range, must have the longest range capabilities of any private expedition or explorer superyacht.
But, I was wrong.
This, ladies and gentleman, is 'Lone Ranger'.
A true expedition yacht that cut her nautical teeth as an ocean-going vessel during the 1970s, when she was built in Germany to serve as a high-seas tug.
Meaning that, for example, if a tanker in the middle of the Atlantic was left adrift, having lost all engine power, then this would have been the vessel to go and tow her back to safety.

As a Chief Engineer in period of time from 2011 till 3Q of 2012 on Lone Ranger, that ship prove me with outstanding sea keeping capabilities, reliability and redundancy which only 5 legendary Bugsier Sisters posesed. Level of back-up controls, operational simplicity with such a inspirational Engineering makes those 5 Sisters one od a kind on World Maritime level. The only ship in my, already 24 years of carrier, which i kiss before I left for good. Literally Kissed . That was love on first sight. No real comparation in yachting industry. Period.

You are my Hero for having the opportunity to work for her. She is beyond super yachts. I love the idea of a hand blower in Heads for drying Hands. Cuts down on that continue cleaning of towels. What type of cold storage was there for extra Food stores. How big of an area.

In 1997 Peter Lewis, that owned progressive insurance, was the gentleman that bought the yacht for refit in Miami. His son Jonathan oversaw the work. I worked on Lone Ranger for a while working installation of the teak decks. I was there at the Port of Miami when they fueled her up to leave port to make the trip to Cincinnati, Ohio. It took two days of fueling and I was told it was 20 semi truck loads of diesel. I later ran into her while working in Martinique at dry dock on Holland America's Wind Song. She docked around from the shipyard facility at the cruise terminal. Had the opportunity to go out with the crew and the captain for an evening of dinner and drinks. I was always impressed with this yacht.
Wow,I live like 1.5 miles from the Ohio River, and never knew this vessel went to Cincinnati.
It's very uncommon to see an ocean going vessel on that river, as the depth only averages around 15 to 25 feet.
What was the reason for it going to Cincinnati?
@@truthseeker2321 I was told that's where they were going by the captain. He said they were going up and through Great lakes to Cincinnati to pick up Peter Lewis. Obviously from Miami to Cincinnati they would have used enough fuel to probably get enough buoyancy for the river as it was stated in the video her maximum draft was 21.9 ft.
What an incredible yacht she is! I'd take her over a "normal" yacht every time.

If you were stuck in an "end of the world" scenario or had to do a rescue mission to a remote location, this is probably the best yacht to be on! It looks like a research vessel equipped to handle just about anything but still quite comfy to travel in. Thanks for making this video available.

I saw Lone Ranger up close while she was anchored off Nantucket about 10 years ago. She draws too much to enter the harbor. She is an amazingly impressive yacht.

Today's yachts costing more than 100 million don,t have half her range or ability to stay out 100 days on the Atlantic ocean. Going by what I have seen.
Looks more luxurious than many super yachts and the interiors are done with excellent taste.

Owned by the Packer Family of Australia, James Packers Sister Gretal now owns it as part of a family settlement.
It's been said Arctic P can sail around the world non stop, must have similar range or more.

To me the power control sender to the engine room is my Favorite. It just is a maritime traditional control. Instead of joy stick control. Just my Humble opinion.
With 21 feet below the waterline or two decks worth of space, there’s a lot of room for fuel tanks!

I watched your TH-cam and I am a big fan of explorer yachts as well, especially Lone Ranger that has an old strong history of rescuing large vessels such as super tankers and also towing massive off shore rig structures across the oceans. She is a capable yacht unlike most that are built today.
Lone Ranger, which was built in Germany and originally names Simpson and had a sister vessel named Oceanic (now named Osman Khan). Lone Ranger is an incredible yacht and puts to shame the new glittery clorox bottle (ie: plastic and fragile) type yachts that are built today.
Yachts built today are often shipped across oceans for positioning reasons as owners/Captains’ are afraid they could be damaged or don’t want to bear potential adverse weather because the new yachts do not ride well in rough weather (very top heavy with lots of sail/topside area) - unlike Lone Ranger who was built to weather such passages.
Lone Ranger has a long history of globetrotting the planet and has faced all conditions imaginable and as you point out 30,000+ mile range and is also Ice Class (I believe 1A).
Lone Ranger is a REAL MAN’s yacht with beautiful lines (great sheer), something that is VERY rare today - in my opinion, there are few if any yachts that are attractive with such nice lines.
If you were not aware, there is a book written about her (see below) which gives her history since she was built to her refit to a super yacht.
In my opinion, Lone Ranger looks MUCH better in dark green (when she was originally refit to a yacht in Germany) rather than the new blue she is painted in today.

Oh darn, only 30,000 miles?? I can't take her nonstop around the world at the equator without a tanker assist.
Much as I like the idea of converting a military/commercial boats/ships to expedition yachts, the reason most of them are on the way to the scrap yard, is that more modern equipment has made them uneconomical to operate. While they may offer extreme seaworthiness, most owners in that tax bracket will not want to experience rough seas in what is still a relatively small vessel. They require more crew, more maintenance, and way more fuel than a more modern boat, as well as having tremendous interior design limitations due to the utilitarian nature. For 20 mil, there are a lot of options that may not be quite as able to handle extreme weather, but will be more livable and spacious and have much more modern equipment, user friendliness and amenities. JMHO
finally someone who gets it. conversions are romantic but there is a reason they are cheaper than PURPOSE BUILT superyachts ;)

As designed and engineered, this antiquity is ideal to prevail during the inevitable series of EMP... and long-overdue CME.

For an ExpeditionVehicle or ExpeditionVessel, survivability trumps pretty.

Years back running my legal department side of things I had in my staff a lawyer by the name of Rodney Newman. Rodney is a cross between Danny DeVito, and Woody Allen. In early January 2000 Rodney called up one day saying he was off with his girlfriend Tracy to feed a goat and 2 geese. Tracy looked just like Pamela Anderson so who was Rodney to argue. Later that day there was a discussion about the instructions on the goat being tied up but Rodney insisted Tracy had the instructions wrong and let the goat run around. Apparently, the owner of the goat, the geese and the house, was a crew member on a mega yacht called the Lone Ranger. The boat’s owner was USA billionaire Peter Lewis and before he flew down, the crew were taking the boat out for a test run following the fitting of a new radar system. So while away 24hrs Tracy was asked to feed his goat and 2 geese with the clear instructions that the goat must remain on the chain. But Rodney being a lawyer looked over the enclosed yard noting there was no vegetation that the goat could eat- nor any chance of escape, Rodney decided to untie the goat and insisted with Tracy to leave it that way.
The next day Tracy got a call from the owner of the property saying she had better get around there immediately. Upon arrival, he took her to the back yard and there was the goat on the ground barely able to move, demanding to know why she had let the goat off the leash. Tracy explained Rodney thought it was alright given the yard was enclosed. “But what’s wrong with the goat” Tracy asked. “He’s fucking stoned the goat has eaten all my prime bud which I had buried.” He screamed.
A few days later New Zealand media suddenly announced a mystery billionaire had flown into NZ on a Qantas flight to attend the America's Cup yacht race was sniffed out by a drug dog and found in possession of 33grams of high-quality marijuana. He was arrested at Auckland airport then transported to Otahuhu police station. There he slept in a cell on a bunk built into the wall under one blanket after eating a microwaved pie and coffee for dinner. The next day he woke up to a breakfast of baked beans and sausages before being walked under escort to the Otahuhu courthouse. His lawyer Marie Dyhrberg made an urgent application to have his name suppressed, but he was finally named as US billionaire Peter Lewis. Now the real story of what happened was that after the goat ate the dope which was destined for Peter Lewis to enjoy while cruising around NZ waters, the goat owner told his boss who was still in the USA about the disaster with the goat. Lewis simply answered- “No worries I will bring some with me.”

Nice. Amazing range, stay a long time out at sea. Also not a fan of the antique controls, I am fine with ultra modern carbon fiber star-trek-looking helms on some new superyachts. You should check out Magnet, from a US shipyard, Metal Shark. It only has 11000 n/M, but would like to see some more of her.

1.3 million liters. That would be 1,300 cubic meters (m^3). I think anything over 600 cubic meters has to registered as a tanker. That means restrictions where you can go , dock, or anchor. ??
In the video and description you referred to her as _Lone Ranger,_ but the footage itself show her as _Sea Ranger._ Presuming there was a name change, do you know when that was?
The view at 1:04 looks VERY imposing lol! Open ocean tugs are extremely tough and a hull like that would bash through ice! I'd feel very safe on this☺

Real-World -- these are represented in our 2003 conversion of a 1997 Ford CF8000 commercial truck to our concept of an ExpeditionVehicle.
I know of a good boat you may like. She was built by the US Navy in 1942 left the Navy in 1946 and entered the US Coast Guard in 1946 and decommissioned in 2011. She is located near Seattle WA.

That would have made for a great explorer/ super yacht.
It had something like a 20000 NM range, at 15 Kts, with it's GM diesel- electric.
Question; which is the smallest (length, beam, & draft, plus gross tonnages too) Motor Explorer Yacht, but has the longest range (in nautical miles) or the longest endurance (in days, or weeks or months, or years) away from any port's.
Or requiring to be refuelled or resupply (food, water and other consumables), or change of crew members too, while eithet underway at sea and/or at some remote anchorage?
I would gut the helm and retro fit it to modernize it

Reminds me of a nuclear submarine or nuclear powered aircraft carrier. Theoretical unlimited range. You are limited by the amount of fuel you can carry for the people on board(food), not by the fuel for the engines lol. I know why it has such huge fuel tanks, think about towing a container ship or oil tanker from the middle of the Atlantic into port. The fuel burn would be INSANE. Seems like total overkill for even an "explorer yacht". I'd much rather have something with a shallower draft, those huge tanks are why it has a 24' draft. Not to mention all the space they take up inside the vessel.
YB, got a question for you. What makes an explorer boat an explorer? Could it be as simple as the size of her fuel tanks? Could it be the efficiency of the engines? Could it be the combination of both? When you get to 4000hp engines, fuel economy goes out the window and the boats tank capacity becomes paramount. You know the craic Johnno, lets not kid ourselves.
Good question. For me, an explorer yacht has to have long range, must be able to operate in more-or-less any conditions (Cat A unlimited) and must be able to operate for long periods without needing to come alongside.
No, I don't think so. Impressive boat for the money though. The draft is too deep and propulsion system is optimized for towing. The prop is probably almost as tall as the boat. Over a million in fuel to circumnavigate is very inefficient. It makes financial sense only if you have paying customers with ships that need towing. Even though built to last, If anything had to be replaced, it would be a significant expense. Nothing is cheap here lol.

So she'll be classed as an oil tanker then? I believe the regs state any vessel with fuel tanks in excess of 600sqm is classed that way.
This yacht looks like the Arctic P from some years ago that was owned by the late Australian media mogul Kerry Packer.
I was thinking the same thing and reading through the comments to see if there is a link.

Arctic P is 88m and looks almost identical to Sea ranger. There is very limited infor on the inside of Arctic P
It’s interesting that Artic P is 11 metres longer than Lone Ranger. Makes me think that maybe that extra length was added during a major refit?
@@YachtBuoy I don’t think it’s an extension. Clearly they have a lot of similarities but the Arctic P has more power and considerably more volume and draft along with a greater bollard pull. The P has a very large heli deck installed at conversion. Original design was from the same naval architect.
Artic P is a former oceangoing-salavage -tug from the german Bugsier company. Her name was Arctic, sistership of Oceanic, both 87.5 m long, 2 Deutz main engines with total hp of 17.500, bollard pull 197 to. From 1979 - 1973 I served on board of the Artic as boatswain. The other'one named Sea Ranger is one out of four typical salvage tugs from Bugsier, their names were : Atlantic, Wotan, Titan and Simson. They had in total 11.000 hp and were 74.5 m long. I did serve on board the Wotan two times: 1973 - 1975 & 1977 - 1979. All tugs were build in Bremerhaven by the Schichau-Werft. Only for Artic & Oceanic the hulls were build from the Rickmers Werft also situated in Bremerhaven.

Interesting video, but something doesn't add up. You mentioned the gross weight of the vessel is 757 tons, but her fuel capacity is 1.3 million litres. The weight of 1.3m litres of marine fuel is over 1000 tons - heavier than the vessel herself. Surely that can't be correct?
Good point - the 757 tonnes referred to her metric tonnage. I am not sure of her gross tonnage, in terms of her overall weight.
