Those two followers are made to a different specification at the nose and it is clearly visible. There is no wear point on a Browning hi-power that would cause that front of that follower to wear out in that manner. I love your tutorials but in this case that magazine follower specifications has been updated. At least where you're talkin about that nose down element on that older magazine follower. The other change that is occurred within Springs in the last couple of decades is that the way they are tempered has changed. That said even the old way, when done properly results in a spring that although all Springs will find their first yield Point fairly early, their second yield point is resisted quite well.
Cason , case in point, and I admit that this is a single case. A number of years ago there was the case of a 1911 that was found in an estate that was known to have last been fully loaded, and left loaded in 1929. I believe that this firearm was located and a fully loaded condition, with rather pretended projectiles in the 2005 or so timeframe. Which accounts for about seventy-five years of being kept in a fully-loaded condition. Just as a test. Because apparently this was brought to somebody and firearms has a test they took it out on the Range and actually fired the gun and it's found condition and it worked flawlessly. If I remember correctly they actually reloaded the magazine the magazine worked perfectly. So it is not true that the spring will wear out merely by being compressed. If that were so Springs on your car would wear out long before you got 50,000 miles on them and most Springs will last into about a 200,000 mile range when they are heat treated and tempered properly. That is a huge caveat. If I remember correctly one of the most modern Springs were at least claim to have been being manufactured by IMI. They claim that the Springs resist that second yield Point quite well. You might want to look into this aspect of especially music wire Springs. Keep up the good work because I love the Browning hi-power it is the only nine MMA own and it's an Argentine military and it is the most accurate 9mmm I have ever seen in my life when it was first purchased and it was well used when it was first purchased.

Seems like he’s compared a 15rd mag spring to a 13rd mag spring.
So of course they won’t be the same length. Also he said it spent most of its life loaded. If the mag is full of rounds for a significant length of time, the spring will lose strength. But that’s the same for any mag, no matter the brand. For the follower, I don’t see much difference, other than the mec gar one was shinier. I don’t think that will effect performance.

This is absolutely untrue. Springs lose strength from cycling, not from being statically loaded. While springs will eventually lose tension, whether unloaded or loaded, over time, it's impossible to quantify to what degree.

Age of a spring doesn't matter. What matters most is the number of times the spring has been compressed and decompressed plus how clean it is. Junk can get on the follower and mess with the operation of the mag. I keep 2 mags for ccw and then spares for range use. Clean ccw ones every 3-6 months

Making the spring with the internal parts makes more sense to me. The housing didn't look worn out to me.

Wolff Spring makes a Hi-power magazine spring with no follower. One up Wolff Spring.
On 1911's the follower is available with the spring.

I found that the MecGar mags wear out faster than the OLD mags that say Belgium or Canada on them. I used BHSS's Makarov mag springs to rehab a Daewoo modern PP clone, that has the loaded chamber indicator eliminated. It worked out fabulously well. THANKS! BH Spring Solutions!!!! It is a neat little Walther copy, that is rather rare, being less than 1500 were imported into the USA. I still find that clean Belgian mags are the best with JHP ammo in a Hi Power. Am I biased about my love of the Hi Power. One MKIII Hi Power did save my life, so, maybe.

A new spring and follower is less than half the price of a new magazine

i'll be honest, i'm not sure your explanation for spring wear jives with material science. a properly designed spring left compressed over time shouldn't experience significant loss of spring force

I think the issue with the 15 round magazines is that they’re using the same spring as the 13 rounders so the spring gets over compressed and loses strength from being in an over compressed state

Its common umong magazines. The springs are over compressed to compensate for the natural wear of longevity however when you get into automatics a spring with that amount of wear with certain ammunition combinations can fail to load that ammo quickly enough into the chamber before the action closes causing miss feeds and other weapon related reliability issues. This was a particular issue in the marine core in the 90's when they where starting to field 60's era 30rd m16 mags in the desert. The same issues occurs today when using old stang mags with the m249SAW. The springs can't feed the ammunktion fast enough due to natural degradation- however when using new magazines or aftermarket ball bearing followers the guns run near flawlessly.
