I bet anything this is going to be a medium level flop at the box office AND in 10-12 years when the next generation of kids see this movie on Amazon Christmas after Christmas it will be a big cult hit. Any Christmas movie that isn’t an enormous failure usually finds an audience. Jim Carey Grinch, Tim Allen Santa Clause sequels, Elf, and many many more weren’t super warmly received on arrival either.
Would be MORE interesting if Evans played Santa like his character in Knives Out. A sort of down and out “over it” Santa who’s sick of the Twitter Tik Tok self indulged world we live in. And The Rock has to help Santa out
I personally hate christmas movies. But my wife really wanted to see this one so we went last night. Empty theater and I knew rotten tomatoes score was low so I was expecting a mess. But we both actually liked it. It was a fun time. Very predictable movie but very enjoyable
Dan, I work at a comedy club. That "Jingle Bell Rock" is a good joke, I rewound to hear it again (and actually laughed out loud). Made my morning, thanks.
While I don't like movies like these because they tend to be boring, given that this holiday season will be tense for many families (mine included) after a fraught election, Red One could be one of those movies that can be put on during family gatherings. No one will fight about it because of its pleasant, boringness.
Ever since I saw that meme of Dwayne in four different movies wearing the exact same clothes, I can't unsee him in these type of roles. It works when it makes money but it just hasn't been recently.
This should have been a Hellboy movie. Hellboy bodyguards Santa the week leading up to Christmas. Also has to be a dad to his twins with Liz. Lucy Liu is the new head of the BPRD.
I saw the trailer (trailer 2) for this and thought it looked kind of interesting- Santa going missing, Chris Evans being the unwilling guy to find him, etc. Then the Rock showed up and I knew exactly what kind of movie it was going to be. Why COULDN’T they go more fun and fantastical? It’s a movie that has Santa Claus!
I really liked Red One. It was surprisingly 😅 more emotionally developed than I expected, such as in the workout scene with Santa and Callum and later between Callum and O'Malley. The scene in Aruba was also hilarious 😂. Those who know, know 😅.
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting a lot from this movie. But I was hoping it would be just a movie to just watch and riff on with friends. It sounds like it is that but it also feels very Hollywood based on what you described.
Instead of watching this i finally saw on the last night it was playing near me MEMOIR OF A SNAIL and thats definitely one of my favorite movies this year.
@@pettespizzaparlor3245 It’s a movie in theaters now and based on the book. Judy Greer is the Mom that volunteers to direct the Pageant. I thought the movie was wonderful. Very touching. Had no prior knowledge of the story. What a nice surprise. I went due to favorable reviews by reviewers I trust.
It‘s a novel for kids by Barbara Robinson. There was a 1983 movie (only 48 minutes) that starred Loretta Swit and Jackson Davies, but this year there is a brand new one starring Julie Greer and Pete Holmes. I vote for a review of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever too … although I‘m going to be seeing it no matter what!
I'm worried about the state of movie theaters but I am rooting for this movie to flop HARD. It needs to be made crystal clear to these studios that The Rock is not a box office draw. The fact that he alone can make more than the total budgets for like 4 of my top 10 movies of the year combined is sick
Maybe if I’m really bored during the holidays, I’ll stream this, but no way, no how, am I watching it in theaters. PS: the “Jingle Bell Rock” joke was perfect
This looks like exactly the kind of movie I want to watch on streaming, not leave my house when its freezing outside, drive 15 mins wait in line, wait through ads and previews only to have a mediocre time that costs me $50
This is going far down my list of movies to see in the theater. For a family with children any age, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is worth seeing. I’d never read the book. Enjoyed this touching movie very much.
Just what I thought of the movie: perfectly serviceable. Maybe I'll watch it when I run out of good choices one day. But, I just want to add, out of context, that I want Dan's sweater. More to the point, I want to visit Hobbiton in NZ...but I'm broke. So still just a pipe dream. (Sigh!)
I am of the belief that there are less and less people who are the type of movie goers to be okay with just looking for a whatever movie to go see this week. I truly think more and more people now only go to movies if the movie comes across as something you absolutely need to see in theaters. And as insane as it sounds at least to me before I saw reviews for it I am far more likely to go see The Best Christmas Pageant Ever than a painfully generic Rock action vehicle.
Yep. "Red One" looked this quintessential Hollywood junk food. Everything about it felt like it was made to let off the best first impression to get people to go see it and works perfectly for the less demanding film goer, regardless of reactions afterwards as long as they got their ticket cashed, they could care less about how it's looked at as long as it does well enough to justify more junky sequels for the Hollywood machine.
I'm planning to A Real Pain somewhere this week or next week and I love independent films to be in the awards buzz and on Monday we've seen Heretic in Dolby Cinema and I really love it and there's three easter eggs in Heretic award winning horror The Silence of the Lambs, Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead and Kubrick's The Shining and Hugh Grant performance is really outstanding including his jar jar binks impression and sweet delicious blueberry pie.
Yeah Black Adam killed The Rock's momentum and even the Red One showings at my local AMC in LA don't have many people. The Smashing Machine might be a good change.
This movie is literally one of the few (to any) releases that is 'actually' about Xmas. On Xmas day we have Vampires and Infidelity 😶🌫 How did they not market this film with that in mind, making this a 'must see' for the public. This is going to be failed marketing. I saw the film and thought the same, it was... fine... and can totally tell it was made for streaming. The effects are not on a cinematic scale whatsoever. But it does fall into a xmas movie you can have on in future years in the holiday season. I will say this though, I saw the film at an early screening last week and considering how I was feeling last week. I must say, some of the dialogue from The Rock did make me feel 'slightly' better about.... I'll be civil... some people- in this country.
As soon as you said it was written and directed by The Rock's usual team, I knew it would be very mehhh. The TV spots had already convinced me of that. I had several friends send me the original trailer and they were really excited - this group of actors playing with such a fun concept is hard to ignore - but the bland lighting and average CGI and generic performances from The Rock and Chris Evans made me instantly lukewarm about it. Talented actors like this need to take more risks. However it's definitely fun to see JK Simmons kind of slumming and having fun in a role like this!
Kinda feels like these kinds of mediocre films are where Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds are leaning more and more often as they kinda just play themselves ...
I’ve seen some horrendous garbage in theaters this year and this, while bad, isn’t nearly on the same level of awful as something like Borderlands, Madame Web, or The Crow remake Yes, the bar is that disastrously low
Dan is being very kind to this movie, and I commend him for that, because I can’t be. This movie fucking sucks. It’s 2 hours long, the CGI sucks, the plot sucks, it’s the completely wrong tone throughout the whole film, and it’s been done better a million times before. Dwayne Johnson looked dead inside. He treated it like an A24 thriller/drama. I found myself yelling “WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?!” like 10 times during this movie. And not in the good way. The creatures were laughably horrendous looking from beginning to end.
This movie is bad. In the first scene with Chris Evans character he literally steals candy from a baby. Once that happened I knew it was going to be rough to sit through. The prosthetics were good in the one scene they were used but the rest of the time the movie uses horrible CGI that is blurry which makes it look even worse. Skip it unless you are curious.
When I saw the trailer for Red One in Dolby Cinema it feels like for prime video streaming and I don't feel hype or exiting to see it and I don't like happy joyful Christmas movies I prefer R rating action and horror Christmas movies such gremlins and even last year Silent Night and 2022 Violent Night and every dad's favorite Die Hard 1 and 2 and Lethal Weapon. And I don't know why it has to be on IMAX it doesn't suit for it, Dolby Cinema which is fine but IMAX nope and it will definitely not be for the Oscar buzz but maybe for kids choice award.
"Jingle Bell Rock" - if that doesn't land you a million subs then I don't understand this world at all
“Dwayne Johnson stars as himself”, get her Dan 🤣
I love when Dan starts reviews with bad jokes. I feel like it always leads to a fun review.
It‘s so awesome that you are introducing your friend’s son to movies in the same way that your uncle did for you, Dan!
The more I hear about The Rock's work, the more I agree with Patrick Willems' video about actors becoming brands.
Letterboxd says you watched Hot Frosty. Would love to hear your review😅
I loved the Rock joke at the beginning hilarious
"I guess you could probably do worse" is the pinnacle example of 'damned with faint praise' if ever there was one 😁
It's still cool to see J.K. Simmons take up the mantle of Santa Clause for a second time
Goodbye Flannel Dan, Hello Hoodie Dan
Hobbiton Movie Set hoodie- movie adjacent. Very nice!
I read this wrong and thought you "threw" rotten tomatoes at the screen.
Dan, I work at a comedy club. That "Jingle Bell Rock" is a good joke, I rewound to hear it again (and actually laughed out loud). Made my morning, thanks.
I agree, that joke Rocked!
The title + The Rock makes it sound like it is part of a Red Notice series.
While I don't like movies like these because they tend to be boring, given that this holiday season will be tense for many families (mine included) after a fraught election, Red One could be one of those movies that can be put on during family gatherings. No one will fight about it because of its pleasant, boringness.
There will be mentions of snowflakes from someone.
This looks like a movie that will be playing at a family gathering, that no one there will actually be watching.
Any time I see an insane Christmas movie it makes me want Christmas Chronicles 3 even more.
Of the 2 word movie titles that start with r and have 1 in them, I think I’ll stick with ROGUE One, thank you very much.
Thank you, Dan, for the review.
Best lines from this review:
exactly what you expect.
Aggressively OK
And 3am is no time for science experiments
I'll be passing on it. Anora hit my local theater so I'm going to see that instead.
Ghost Cat Anzu for me, but I do want to see Anora too, but you can only pay for so many tickets in a month....
Same. I only have so much money to spend on movies in theaters. Gotta pick the ones I know I'm going to enjoy
fun fact: the rock visits in-n-out burger for the first time every year 🍔
If you want to watch a GOOD Christmas movie where JK Simmons plays Santa, watch Klaus.
Jingle Bell Rock is genius. Well done, I’m subscribing
2:28 You mean, the Metal Gear Santa scene?
Good review, Dan. While your review is mixed, I'm excited to take my kids to go see this one over the holiday season.
Me too, we're planning to see it on Sunday. I can always use a bit of distraction from real life.
Ever since I saw that meme of Dwayne in four different movies wearing the exact same clothes, I can't unsee him in these type of roles. It works when it makes money but it just hasn't been recently.
This looks like one of those Netflix assembly line movies that look like they’re made over a weekend in front of a green screen
This should have been a Hellboy movie. Hellboy bodyguards Santa the week leading up to Christmas. Also has to be a dad to his twins with Liz. Lucy Liu is the new head of the BPRD.
Chris Evans is the head of the Christmas Sweater department of Santa's operation. Orlando Bloom is an elf.
Seasonally appropriate- Dan opens with a Christmas cracker joke!
I saw a trailer for this movie and Dan just described it exactly as I imagined it.
I really liked Red One. It was surprisingly 😅 more emotionally developed than I expected, such as in the workout scene with Santa and Callum and later between Callum and O'Malley. The scene in Aruba was also hilarious 😂. Those who know, know 😅.
Johnny Storm and Black Adam crossover action!!!
I'm more fascinated by Dan's hoodie. So he'd gone to Hobbiton? Neat!😃
Most of the movie i found myself thinking "hey i like when they did this in Prep and Landing!" 😅
Oh wow, is it finally out? We've been working on that last year. I pretty much forgot all about it already.
Honestly, this movie looks like something that was written completely by AI. Holiday Movie + The Rock + Superhero Actor + MCU knockoff feel.
You should have done a review of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. A great Christmas movie!
Dan, you should review The Best Christmas pageant ever. I met you at a screening back in September
Wha8t. That's a short story/novella. Did they make a movie on that or is this different?
@@pettespizzaparlor3245 It’s a movie in theaters now and based on the book. Judy Greer is the Mom that volunteers to direct the Pageant. I thought the movie was wonderful. Very touching. Had no prior knowledge of the story. What a nice surprise. I went due to favorable reviews by reviewers I trust.

Im super disappointed that Chris didn't get his hands on a wonder women toy through out the movie 😂😂😂
This looks like exactly the kind of movie I want to watch on streaming, not leave my house when its freezing outside, drive 15 mins wait in line, wait through ads and previews only to have a mediocre time that costs me $50
$50 ?? 😂😂😂 I’m glad I don’t live in America 🇺🇸 £10 in the UK 🇬🇧 dude 😅
Can you smell the shlock Dwayne's been cooking'?
There should always be caution to the quality of a film when Dwayne Johnson is starring. The guy has one the poorer track records of film successes.
This is going far down my list of movies to see in the theater. For a family with children any age, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever is worth seeing. I’d never read the book. Enjoyed this touching movie very much.
Don't stop with the puns Dad I mean Dan
Looks like a straight to streaming movie
10/10 opening joke
Do a video on what you consider top 10 or 20 christmas movies... those bonafide classics
3:27 this one got me, +5 comedy points
I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed it.
Sounds like it's perfect for my wife who's a 50 going on 9 xmas loving kid
Oh I love this for Bonnie Hunt at least
Just what I thought of the movie: perfectly serviceable. Maybe I'll watch it when I run out of good choices one day.
But, I just want to add, out of context, that I want Dan's sweater. More to the point, I want to visit Hobbiton in NZ...but I'm broke. So still just a pipe dream. (Sigh!)
Out of the 3 big Avengers actors Chris Evans has had the worst post Endgame career trajectory.

Frankly, I think the most upsetting thing about this movie is that it's a christmas movie coming our before Thanksgiving. This cannot stand.

Yeah Black Adam killed The Rock's momentum and even the Red One showings at my local AMC in LA don't have many people. The Smashing Machine might be a good change.
Watch it make a billion dollars.
Chris Evans in Sunshine 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Evans needs a new agent
$250M actual budget
Dan have you seen Life After Fighting? Still one of the best action films of 2024 and it was an independent film from Australia!
Saw it last night, it's a fun generic Christmas action film. You'll like it
I enjoyed the film. Come on, we NEED a happy movie. And this one made me laugh. 😆
6:56 I heard there was 1 F-Bomb but I don’t know if that’s true. Just a heads up for families.
They cut it off before it's said
I won't support creative laziness, which in turn supports one of the Desk Riders of the Apocalypse, Jeff Bezos.
It looks as good as Red Notice

The Rock must think audiences are so stupid to always be doing these movies.
I feel so alone liking Chris Evans performance in The Gray Man AND actually LIKING The Gray Man.
You're fired
Has the rock ever been in a good film? and what will he be remembered for.
Somehow this movie is only the 2nd worst thing to happen this November.
What's the worst thing
I wonder which is worse: that he won or that enough of America chose him?

There were two jumaji sequels?
Emilia Perez will have to wait
but will the Rock be in the jungle at some point?

. . . I have to tell my brother about it immediately.
