Jason Statham or Daniel Craig as the serious role could work - both have done comedy but both bring an aura of seriousness that The Rock doesn't in 2024.
The Rock's best roles was in Faster and Michael Bay's Pain and Gain. The characters are polar opposites of each other, one being a man who goes on a revenge spree and the other being a drug addict turned body builder, and they stand from most of his roles
Yes! Dammit, yes!!! Someone finally mentions Faster😫😫😫 why just why has this movie been forgotten???? It's the Rock's best work in my opinion as dammit if I didn't feel like I was the Rock ruthlessly pursuing those who hurt him and his brother, as the weight of the past weighs down on him while time moves forward for everyone else, mostly.
I don't really want to see this movie but I don't feel like Evans is miscast. He played the a**hole character in a lot of his early roles. This character being a hacker is also reminiscant of his role in the losers.
Evans was fine, but the material he had to work with was garbage. This movie felt like someone was struck very hard in the head before they wrote it, but not in a good way
I think Jason Statham is todays only manly man action man. Other than that movie with Melissa Macarthy about Spys, he is mostly in action movies where is his seriously and british.
Jason came to mind as well. Even Tom Cruise before Keanu. Statham is the most serious but he not as likable/popular as the other action, but he is the most type cast.
The Rock is a big brand but he's not a bankable movie star. His movies rarely break out. Sometimes they barely break even. His production company is making the movie which probably added to his fee. He's becoming more of a liability at this point. The movies aren't there for Dwayne Johnson the actor to do anything interesting. They're just incredibly expensive publicity vehicles for The Rock the brand.
I haven't seen the movie, but when it comes to casting do you know who is retiring from action movies, and it would have been funny to see him in a Christmas parody of an action movie? Liam Neeson. Imagine the teaser: it starts off with a close-up of Neeson's face as he talks on the phone. "I do not have the authorization to negotiate with you, or to give in to your demands. What I have are a particular set of skills, skills I will use to get back my employer. Our organization urges you to release him, or I will come for him, and I will come for you, and you will be put on the list." A disembodied voice on the other end of the phone simply says "You have 48 hours, or the holiday is canceled." "Very well." Liam hangs up, then looks over his shoulder as the camera pans out to show Santa's workshop. "Get me two reindeer and a bag of candy canes. Somebody's kidnapped Santa Claus."
Considering he's about to star in a Naked Gun reboot, this kind of role wouldn't be too out of the ordinary for him, he could definitely nail the absurdity of the role while still maintaining a level of seriousness
Kristofer Hivju (in my opinion) needs to be a bigger star than he is. The man has charisma, he’s funny, and he can be intimidating and dramatic when he needs to be.
@@CosmicshamblerI would assume it’s Norwegian. Because he is Norwegian. Idk why a Norwegian man being credited using his Norwegian surname is a problem. Arnold Schwarzenegger was fine to keep his surname after becoming famous.
The Rock basically leapfrogged his career to the “90s Schwarzenegger” phase where pretty much every single movie that he makes is a family comedy, or at least family friendly hijinks/adventure movie, that capitalizes on his status as a big toughguy action star playing against type. The problem with this is that The Rock doesn’t have a rich catalog of beloved R-rated action movies that predate this phase to give him a “type” to act against. Pro wrestling doesn’t count, pro wrestling is for kids. He’s never not been a kids’ entertainer-which is fine, nothing wrong with that-but there seems to be an underlying desire to be more (can you tell that he rly wants to be president?), to be like an everything-star to all people (ie kinda what Schwarzenegger did). More than failing to copy Arnold’s ineffable charisma, the Rock doesn’t have Arnold’s eye for picking all-time classic movies. He could be like a less terrible and much wealthier Hulk Hogan if he were to lean into it, but he takes himself too seriously.
That's a great assessment though I push back on failing to copy Arnold's charisma. Let's be real. Dwayne has charisma coming out of his a$$. It's the thing keeping him going at this point when his inability to act fails.
Krampus played by Hivju is easily the best performance in the film, was genuinely surprised to have enjoyed something outside the pure absurdity thats sprinkled throughout. It also helps that hes the only one acting like he wants to be there, cant say the same for Simmons, Liu, or Johnson.
I keep getting this vibe that the original two actors who were supposed to play these characters, whereas the rock and Ryan Reynolds and then they ran into that problem that Ryan Reynolds already worked with the rock once on a Netflix movie and he had a bad experience with him so he refuses to work with him so they tried to scramble to get another big star. That might work similarly and that's how we got Chris Evans.
I feel like Jason and Ryan's chemistry may not bold well together. Jason works best when his co-stars are either as serious manly as he is (the Expendables) or morality pet (the Transporter movies). Ryan style works best when his co-stars has enough charisma to bounce back on his jokes (basically the side characters from Deadpool or the Hitman's Bodyguard)
Thing with the rock is that he isn’t a bad actor, but has type cast himself into this one particular role. He can play over characters when he wants to, which makes his current career so much more frustrating.
I don’t doubt Chris Evans’ acting ever, seeing him in Knives Out, Snowpiercer and Captain America - he is incredible and has so much range, it’s just a pity his range now includes this film too
My casting idea/suggestion, given the criteria you've brought up, and having seen one longer breakdown of the movie, so my understanding of the character may not be quite there: Henry Cavill and Charlie Day. Cavill plays to the Secret Service, elite forces type. He's a little stiffer than the Rock, but that actually plays BETTER for this, since the idea is that he needs to break out of it. Charlie Day probably isn't in the same tier of actors to get this made, but can really nail the "scumbag dad because he's overthinking being a dad" kind of neurosis, while also having the energy of being able to plan a complicated heist.
awesome idea! cavill plays so well against anyone whether serious or not. like him and armie hammer even. charlie day could be a super nerd hired by the badguys to design the "ultimate video game dungeon" except it was actually a real magical impenetrable dungeon to imprison santa claus, and then said bad guys try to tie loose ends and threatens charlie day's family. giving cavill's character a more compelling reason to recruit charlie day into the rescue mission
I went to see this mainly because I like Chris Evans and I had a fine time. I give it a 6.5 to 7 but I also had fairly low expectations for it. It was what I expected, an action-comedy holiday movie.
I’d slot Mark Walburg in for the Rock. He brings a neurotic “might punch his costars in the mouth” energy that would be fun to watch in a winter wonderland film
Aaron Taylor Johnson would be brilliant for the Chris Evans role. He can play dirt bags, yet bring a unique compelling story to the character. Hes such a under looked actor, people tend to forget this big buff brit was once upon a time Mr. kick ass himself.
You get Kurt Russell to play Santa and call it Christmas Chronicles 3. You then get J. K. Simmons to play the Rock part and cast Donald Glover to play the scumbag. You need to rewrite a few little things, but I feel it works.
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson needs to go away. He's overexposed in movies and wrestling. His aura is fading fast, if not gone completely. There have been multiple reports of his ego hurting countless films. He even cost the US Army/American taxpayers 11 million for failing to increase recruits. Dwayne needs to take an extended vacation from all of this. He should seek professional help about his issues, stop chasing this action hero trend, and take some risks in terms of acting.
You managed to use the movie A Real Pain to connect a train of thought without actually saying the title of the movie, which is incredibly timely as that movie expanded the same weekend Red One opened. (I saw them both last Friday.)
4:49 'it did not work' understatement my good man. It didn't work in such spectacular fashion that it ended a franchise that yes, while not viable at its then current juncture could've made a comeback with the right amount of caution, some good scripts and focus on making really good movies. It'd didn't need to be perfect. But after the laughable 'takeover' attempt by Dwayne Johnson that was the coup de grace. Black Adam may not have been the only factor in the DCEU going over the edge but it did point it toward the cliff and give a running start.
I think the star doing everything the Rock does better right now is his Hobbs & Shaw Co-Star - Statham. A good mix of "serious" action stuff like Wrath of Man & "Silly" action stuff like The Beekeeper and The Meg. I'm always interested in a new Statham movie in a way that I am definitely not for The Rock and Reynolds
Mike Tyson shoulda just kept doing cameos after Hungover, dude got his ass beat for 20 mil and The Rock out here just chilling and getting almost twice as much
Personally I’m just sick of the rock… he just seems to be like 90% ego and only plays himself. I’d like him a lot more in movies if he would just do something even a little bit different! I agree with Dave Bautista when it comes to the Rock.. he’s not an actor, he’s a performer. He performs as himself and that’s it. I haven’t really enjoyed a movie of his except for Jumanji since like… I dunno, the one with Sean William Scott maybe? Idk. I genuinely don’t understand why he’s so popular, but maybe that’s just my opinion on actors as a “persona” because I just don’t like that at all… I much prefer actors who disappear into roles, it’s less distracting. If I don’t remember a character name and just say the actor name, that’s a problem for me and I only ever see “the rock” in whatever movie. I feel like that only kinda works with some comedies… I love Will Farrell but he’s just Will Farrell in everything, but it works better in a comedy. Not action or more serious movies.
You used it to describe his earlier roles where he was more serious, but honestly, I think comparing his entire career to Arnold Schwarzenegger is more accurate. He started outside of acting as a professional strongman (bodybuilder), started acting in mostly serious badass toughguy roles (Terminator, Predator, etc) and once he was known for that, started playing against type as goofy muscle man in silly situations (Jingle all the Way, Twins) and become known for doing both. Once his movies start losing enough steam, he’ll probably go into politics next.
It’s their movie though. They cast themselves. Especially Dwayne. I enjoyed the movie a lot. I had a nice time with my mom, who only enjoys action or Christmas and her favorite movie is Moana. Basically, this movie was made for her but with the added bonus of my celebrity crush, Chris Evans. Oh. Chris got sexiest man alive while filming this movie and Dwayne was a tool in giving him his flowers. That was really indicative of his true character.
My first thought when i watched the trailer and like the trailer ended with "On Theaters November whatever" was "....Wait this is going _on theaters??_ This is not a Netflix Christmas special?"
Replace the Rock with Hugh jackman (We never saw him and Chris evans together) puts more practical effects for the elves and little monsters; puts more calm moments where the two heroes talked about their pasts, mistakes or dream. That would make the movie better 🙂
The reason JK Simmons was cast as Santa was a throwaway line from "The Tomorrow War", where he played Chris Pratt's father. When someone else sees him for the first time, they ask "who is this Conspiracy Santa?". This is done in part because Simmons is now really jacked (especially so considering his age), and that was a bit of a surprise for audiences. So it is natural that he would be cast as an actual jacked Santa Claus at some point.
Douchebag who could be seen as a brilliant hacker? I'm sorry but would Bradley Cooper (who is too into passion projects at this point to actually agree to a movie like this) not be a great pick?

@@ThePrinceofHisOwnKingdom It's the same with Faster, except it's a Rock who embodies such pain and unforgiving hatred.
keanu reeves and kieran culkin is the duo i never knew i needed. i would LOVE to see them in a movie together now
I don't really want to see this movie but I don't feel like Evans is miscast. He played the a**hole character in a lot of his early roles. This character being a hacker is also reminiscant of his role in the losers.
He also played that actor with the huge eyebrows in the Scott Pilgrim movie. He acted like an a-hole in that
Evans was fine, but the material he had to work with was garbage. This movie felt like someone was struck very hard in the head before they wrote it, but not in a good way
Wait. You want a Caulkin in a Christmas movie? That'd never work.😅
0:30 A movie about Santa Claus getting kidnapped doesn’t have a lot of Santa in it. Go figure.
Really looking forward to the Pitch Meeting for this movie.
Super easy. Barely an inconvenience.
The Nice Guys is my favorite recent example of the scumbag / straight man dynamic.
Shane Black is so good at this - Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is another that does it well, to say nothing of Lethal Weapon.
it;s an excellent movie. but who IS the scumbag and who the 'straight man'?
The Rock has all the range of his namesake.
Your quick Matchstick Men reference is still the best casting solution-Nic Cage playing it straight, Sam Rockwell in the Evans role
This is what I was thinking and given Nando love for Justin Hammer I was expecting him to make that pitch
At this Point the Rock should stop Cooking
I haven't seen the movie, but when it comes to casting do you know who is retiring from action movies, and it would have been funny to see him in a Christmas parody of an action movie? Liam Neeson.
Imagine the teaser: it starts off with a close-up of Neeson's face as he talks on the phone.
"I do not have the authorization to negotiate with you, or to give in to your demands. What I have are a particular set of skills, skills I will use to get back my employer. Our organization urges you to release him, or I will come for him, and I will come for you, and you will be put on the list."
A disembodied voice on the other end of the phone simply says "You have 48 hours, or the holiday is canceled."
"Very well." Liam hangs up, then looks over his shoulder as the camera pans out to show Santa's workshop.
"Get me two reindeer and a bag of candy canes. Somebody's kidnapped Santa Claus."
This would have been great. But who plays the dirt bag?
Considering he's about to star in a Naked Gun reboot, this kind of role wouldn't be too out of the ordinary for him, he could definitely nail the absurdity of the role while still maintaining a level of seriousness
Kristofer Hivju (in my opinion) needs to be a bigger star than he is. The man has charisma, he’s funny, and he can be intimidating and dramatic when he needs to be.
He needs to change his last name tho cause wtf is even that last name
@@CosmicshamblerI would assume it’s Norwegian. Because he is Norwegian. Idk why a Norwegian man being credited using his Norwegian surname is a problem. Arnold Schwarzenegger was fine to keep his surname after becoming famous.
6:21 Jason Statham
My immediate thought was Statham. And I kind of want to see it.
Tom Cruise
The actor who plays Krampus is perfect as Kraven The Hunter, in an actual Spiderman film in the MCU...
Krampus played by Hivju is easily the best performance in the film, was genuinely surprised to have enjoyed something outside the pure absurdity thats sprinkled throughout.
It also helps that hes the only one acting like he wants to be there, cant say the same for Simmons, Liu, or Johnson.
The rock was known as franchise viagra....I guess the drug finally wore off.
I have never seen a The Rock thing that wasn’t just … fine. And that includes the time he fought a cage match with Seven of Nine.
Please watch Faster🥹
Holiday films always seem to get a pass on flop or not. The studio is looking for things that will become a part of the holiday vibe. Yearly repeats.
Jason Statham as the Rock’s role
Ryan Reynolds as Chris Evan’s role
Crank meets Deadpool
James MacVoy as Chris Evans role.
Keanu Reeves Christmas movie is genuinely such a huge brain idea @ hollywood get on it
The shrinking cgi on the rock caught me off guard it was so funny.
Thing with the rock is that he isn’t a bad actor, but has type cast himself into this one particular role. He can play over characters when he wants to, which makes his current career so much more frustrating.
I can't wait to see this...at home on Amazon on Christmas morning.😅
It was originally meant to be an Amazon exclusive lol
@IcyDiamond I know. It cost so much money that they had to put it into theaters to offset the cost.
I don’t doubt Chris Evans’ acting ever, seeing him in Knives Out, Snowpiercer and Captain America - he is incredible and has so much range, it’s just a pity his range now includes this film too
Oooh, Keanu Reeves & Steven Yeun. Didn't know I needed these 2 in a movie, but now I want it!
The Rock has never been in a film as good as Total Recall.
The role you were questioning who would play chris evans role i was SCREAMING RAMI MALEK the entire time at my tv
I knew it was a disaster since the first trailer I saw this past early dall
First person I thought to replace the Rock was Jason Statham, he does the no-nonsense character the best!
Ooh. I like this pairing!
awesome idea! cavill plays so well against anyone whether serious or not. like him and armie hammer even. charlie day could be a super nerd hired by the badguys to design the "ultimate video game dungeon" except it was actually a real magical impenetrable dungeon to imprison santa claus, and then said bad guys try to tie loose ends and threatens charlie day's family. giving cavill's character a more compelling reason to recruit charlie day into the rescue mission
I went to see this mainly because I like Chris Evans and I had a fine time. I give it a 6.5 to 7 but I also had fairly low expectations for it. It was what I expected, an action-comedy holiday movie.
This is Collecting A Paycheck: the movie. Every single one of these guys had like a down payment on a house they needed to meet.
I’d slot Mark Walburg in for the Rock. He brings a neurotic “might punch his costars in the mouth” energy that would be fun to watch in a winter wonderland film
Keanu acting as a "dirtbag" in Constantine and a hacker in The Matrix, Keanu can definitely play the role of Chris Evans.😅
2:00 Corrections Jackals from Seth Meyers show got a casual reference! ❤
Taron Egerton instead of Chris Evans would have been my pick.
My mom, who is elderly, and who I am desperate to get quality time with, told me YESTERDAY that she really wants to go see this. UUUUGGGGGHHHH 😫
Suck it up for mom dukes!
She’s old, she’ll forget about this. Just tell her you took her to it yesterday.
It’s worth watching for quality time with mom though.
You’re going into it with negative zero expectations, so just enjoy it for what it is, not a big deal at all
Go see it with her. Never know how much time you have left. It'll make her day.
I think it'd've been best if the Red One script had been Re-Done...
Aaron Taylor Johnson would be brilliant for the Chris Evans role.
He can play dirt bags, yet bring a unique compelling story to the character.
Hes such a under looked actor, people tend to forget this big buff brit was once upon a time Mr. kick ass himself.
Ngl, the lead characters look shippable 😳
And if I were to recast, I think Dave Bautista and Theo James could work.
You get Kurt Russell to play Santa and call it Christmas Chronicles 3. You then get J. K. Simmons to play the Rock part and cast Donald Glover to play the scumbag. You need to rewrite a few little things, but I feel it works.
what's the term at 3:24? I haven't heard that one b4.
'Schwarzeneggerian', as in, like Arnold Schwarzenegger.
6:27 Tom (respectfully) fing Cruise. Literally action Jackson at this point. Otherwise love the vid obvi😂👍
Hear me out -- Jason Statham in the Rock role, and Sebastian Stan in the Evans role.
Scott Adkins in the Rock role would be fun
A christmas movie starring The Rock and Chris Evans, I don’t even have to watch it to know what happens in it
I also like that version of Krampus *wink wink* lol 😂
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson needs to go away. He's overexposed in movies and wrestling. His aura is fading fast, if not gone completely. There have been multiple reports of his ego hurting countless films. He even cost the US Army/American taxpayers 11 million for failing to increase recruits.
Dwayne needs to take an extended vacation from all of this. He should seek professional help about his issues, stop chasing this action hero trend, and take some risks in terms of acting.
Red One really feels like a movie that you watch half asleep on Christmas day
Great vid! Loved your casting takes.
The Rock tried to combine Fat Man and Oppenheimer. What he got was a nuclear glitter bomb.
I am absolutely sick of Dwayne Johnson. You could erase several of the latest Dwyane Johnson movies and there'd still be too many.
For the record, this idea is also *kinda* covered in Arthur Christmas
I think the star doing everything the Rock does better right now is his Hobbs & Shaw Co-Star - Statham. A good mix of "serious" action stuff like Wrath of Man & "Silly" action stuff like The Beekeeper and The Meg.
I'm always interested in a new Statham movie in a way that I am definitely not for The Rock and Reynolds
Agree that Statham would have made more sense but he’s not as popular/likable as other action stars like Tom Cruise and Keanu.
Dude just really glazed over gerard butler when it came to action stars
Mike Tyson shoulda just kept doing cameos after Hungover, dude got his ass beat for 20 mil and The Rock out here just chilling and getting almost twice as much
So stoked to hear the Corrections reference
That’s how a jackal like me know I found a TH-camr with my taste.
It’s over for the rock. How is everyone not sick of his schtick? I don’t take gas!! Rise and grind. Blah blah blh
Arthur Christmas does the elf as CIA agent extremely well - instant classic for me
It’s their movie though.
For a great recent heist movie, Logan Lucky with Channing Tatum and Adam Driver. They were great together
Channing would be SUCH a good likeable dirt bag! We know he can do it from The Hateful Eight and 21/22 Jump Street series.
Replace the Rock with Hugh jackman (We never saw him and Chris evans together) puts more practical effects for the elves and little monsters; puts more calm moments where the two heroes talked about their pasts, mistakes or dream. That would make the movie better 🙂
“Who is an actor who, in the present day, is largely almost exclusively known for action movies”
I thought you were gonna say Jason Stathum
