Agreed, and it's rare that a trilogy made so quickly maintains such a consistent quality. These movies kinda helped turn the perception of video game adaptations around, showing that if you just adapt from the source material faithfully, you'll get movies that work for fans and non-fans... And none of it would've happened if the CGI character design never changed after that 1st trailer.
Fun fact, director Jeff Fowler said in recent interviews that they did in fact print Jim Carrey's script in 24k gold ink and hand delivered it to his house when beginning discussions to have him return for this movie.
@@NathanDrakeTheGreat Honestly, as soon as Tim Miller confirmed that it was actually Jeff Fowler's idea to delay the first film and redesign Sonic, and that he personally announced the delay without waiting for studio approval or anything, because he knew the movie was completely screwed otherwise, he's had me won over completely. That was a ballsy move, but he was completely right in doing so. And now Paramount has a successful franchise under their belt, and are staring down a potential box office upset over Disney during the most lucrative time of the year. That's all on Jeff Fowler.
The first movie filmed mostly in my small town on Vancouver Island back in 2018. We were on a ferry to the mainland in the lower parking deck and there was a giant star trailer beside us. James Marsden walked by our car with a coffee in hand, our window was rolled down already, so I said "Hey, sorry to bother you, but you're James right?". We stood outside our vehicles and had coffee together for about 30 minutes just chatting about movies and music. Hands down one of the most down-to-earth and friendly actors I've ever met (though I haven't met many).
Jeff Fowler has a history with the Sonic franchise, and it shows due to the respect given to longtime fans as well as people unfamiliar with the franchise. There is something for everyone in these films, and I am glad that they have not lost that spark that the first one had.
It's crazy how far we have gone with these Sonic movies. I remember like it was yesterday when Paramount dropped that Ugly Sonic trailer for the first movie and everyone went nuts with it so the studio delayed the first movie for 3 months just to redesign it 😂
Dan's kids' movie reviews are invaluable to me. They don't always save me the pain of having to see the movie but it helps being prepared for what's coming. When there's a new movie out my 8 year old always asks, "What did Dan Murrell say?" Sometimes I have to soften it for him a bit like with the Minions! 😂 I wonder what he'd make of being a significant part of a little Bristolian kid's cultural experiences?? Anyway, I'm glad I've got good news for him this time!
Sonic defying the video game movie curse with all 3 of its entries is pretty amazing. I've never played a single Sonic game and still enjoyed these movies.
Remember the original trailer for the first Sonic, with that horrific nightmare design? If you told me then that we would get three of these things, with Idris Elba and Keanu Reeves joining the cast, and that it would be a highly anticipated holiday release, I would have said you were high and should probably lay down. I'm so impressed withwhat these movies have done and made work.
Them changing that initial design, at least in the financial metrics, might just go down as one of the most consequential and beneficial ‘reshoot’ decisions in movie history.
As an 80s baby, the only Jim Carrey movies I've seen in theaters was Batman Forever, The Cable Guy and The Mask. Everything else, I waited until it released on video.
There is something special, that this series has tapped into the fan base. It brings out what we love. And it is for everyone. The cast is amazing, love the journey. Excellent review 🤘
I got a good laugh when Dan admitted that he thought Tails was a girl the whole time. 😂 It’s like reverse Bluey, where most adults stepping into the show initially thought Bluey was a boy.
@ I used to think Blue from ‘Blue’s Clues’ and Periwinkle the cat were opposite gender. I was surprised as a kid when it turned out the blue dog was a girl and the purple-ish cat was a boy. Same with Shovel and Pail.
People joke about Jim Carrey wanting a script written in gold to come out of retirement, but did they really expect the man who relished in portraying Count Olof to turn down the opportunity to play two mustache-twirling villains at the same time?
The tonal shift you can easily hear with your feelings while reviewing both Sonic 3 and Mufasa, just says it all. I was already planning to see Sonic 3 with the family but, I have a feeling that like you, I'll want to watch it again.
a. That music needs a trigger warning for any 90s kids watching. b. The addition of the "death by drowning" sound effect to the intro was genius. c. Glad the movie was good; looking forward to seeing it make news on Charts next week. Keep up the good work, Dan!
I’m glad we live in a world where a Sonic movie is going to be better reviewed and more financially successful than a big Disney musical in Mufasa. Proving once and for all that audiences want good old-fashioned, timeless storytelling instead of overly sanitized products that treats their audiences like idiots.
Sonic Adventure 2 was my big no-life childhood game (hours spent grinding getting every emblem and breeding the perfect chao...) so I'm ready to see my boy Shadow on the big screen.
What a coincidence with your life events and the releases of the Sonic movies! There’s always good with the bad in life. I’m glad that you’ve found some joy with these movies. I’m looking forward to seeing this movie over the holidays. 💜

Good review. I shall likely see it twice in cinemas at a minimum as I have my tickets booked for me and my grandsons next week, and I’ll probably see it too with my son this coming weekend. Not really fussed about seeing Mufasa though at the cinema however.
Major props to the Sonic series of films. They understood the uphill battle they had initially with that design and ever since turning it around and getting modest success the first time, they have not taken it for granted like most other studios would have and just would have settled for the hopes the brand name can allow them to be lazy or not put as much effort into it (Disney and Illumination.). More studios could take a page from that.
Shadow is not even remotely "Sonic's greatest enemy" because they're not even enemies. This thumbnail juxtaposed with the one for Mufasa instantly told me everything I already expected, and I think that's what Dan was going for.
Every time I see the sad/ disappointed face for a movie, I'm looking forward to always hurts, especially when it's from him and Jeremey Jahns
