Very good basic cleaning video! You did not forget safety issues and kept it real! Not everyone has all the tools, but a torque wrench can be borrowed or rented so it is not that hard. The key on torque is not to overdo it. Some guys think you have to grunt it or it isn’t tight. That is another trip to buy a part that isn’t cheap! Duh!
I was having problems with my car and was quoted R4500 for new throttle body, saw this video and decided to follow it and do as explained, long story short car works, money saved, great video.
Helped with idle problem, thanks a lot, just done it today and car from almost dead, and choking and spitting missfire explosion to normal idle work, can't beleive this was problem that much, once again thanks for help

Fought the “quick disconnect” fuel lines to change the filter. Aaaaaaaannndddd nothing. Heard my throttle whining and clicking so going to take it apart and see......
Getting my throttle body cleaned on my car has worked absolute wonders. My car was stalling sometimes when stopping and getting it cleaned has stopped it wanting to stall. I'm so happy. 🤞🏻🇦🇺
I thank you for the insight as to why my 2006 Trailblazer is stalling and running rough when stopped. That's what I was looking for when I Googled how to clean the throttle body.
IMPORTANT! If your throttle body is an electric one, don't force open the butterfly as you may break the spring inside. Also the adaptation without vcds or vagcom might work, but always check on a forum of your car on how-to do it properly, as if you aren't prepared it's cost more than let a mechanic clean it for you

The difference that doing a throttle body adaptation can make is amazing! In SA we have a lot of Mk3 Golfs/Jettas and "Citi Golfs" that use the Bosch MP9 EFI system. The TB's get gummed up and the stepper motor struggles more and more to stabilise idle- a good clean and adaptation (channel 098 on a Launch scan tool) and you're good to go! Even works on getting a car with a 268,272,276 degree cam to idle "properly".
Great video. Funny I clean mine today and used a screwdriver handle to hold it open just like you did. Brilliant minds think alike! I just use acetone since it’s 80 to 90% of what’s in a spray bottle of CRC throttle bottle. Thanks for posting!
Some manufacturers don't want you spraying the cleaner directly in the TB because they have special grease on the shaft that can be washed out. Spraying on a rag and wiping it is the preferred method. Also a lot of them have special coatings that can be removed by some harsh cleaners. I'm not sure the scotch brite would be good to use on something like that so be sure and check your service data before cleaning. Lastly, some vehicles it is impossible to readapt the TB learn values without an expensive bidirectional scan tool (like VCDS.) You can end up with some wierd stuff going on with idle. Honda, for example, will not learn the idle without the bidirectional scan tool.
Actually a way around that with Honda is doing a ECM relearn by disconnecting the battery ends and touching then together for 15-30 mins. That forces the car to relearn everything.
@@sony12345111 Nope. That does not reset the PCM, nor does it clear the TP data necessary to do an idle relearn. Been there done that and it doesn't work. I've tried it. @@TheRobertChannel It's not false information. I have an 08 Odyssey that would NOT relearn the idle until the TP data was cleared with the scan tool. Absolutely worked like a charm. I left the battery connected and also moved the butterfly to clean. First time after cycling keys had a check engine light and the RPM settled a bit over 1,000 . It worked itself out after another key cycle. Settled in a tad under 8,000 rpm. Fixed the jitters on idle, real smooth. MK4 Golf with 144,000 miles. Thanks again for a clear useful video!!
What I do like in your channel, it is comprehensive. You use comprehensive set of tools, you narrate comprehensive directions, spray comprehensive cleaner. Before dismantling throttle body it's better to disconnect negative terminal off the battery. Touch the valve gently and do not let it shut violently! The throttle valve is actuated by the small motor which is aligned to the small plastic gears. That gears are likely get damaged when the opened throttle valve is let shut violently. Also I want to mention here some throttles feature the grid beyond the valve. The grid if you observe carefully its surface you can discern has its side next to valve edged section, whilst the other side is sloped and smooth. I don't know what this grid stands for, but I can speculate it alignes and disperses air intake to eliminate turbulence. I can say among numerous channels your narration is the most comprehensive.

Glad to help! Most of the times folks wait until there is an issue to clean it. If it’s easy to get to like the car I used, it’s worth doing it as Preventative Maintenance. 😎😎😎
If you wanna call this throttle body dirty. I am not sure what you´d call the one I once cleaned on a mk3 golf. It had like a solid milimeter of crud all over the inside.
I heard that moving the fly by hand may hurt the motor that drives it? But you seem to do it without any questions -- is this a good idea? It does, however, seem necessary to open it by hand, how else could you clean what needs to be cleaned otherwise.
Keep in mind that some manufacturers coat the throttle body bore with a specialized material and if you clean it aggressively, as this video instructs, you will remove the coating and the valve will not seal properly in the bore. This will create a higher than normal idle.
Maybe use a plastic "brillo" pad version to do the scrubbing to avoid scratching off the coating. Let it soak for a bit longer and scrub a bit longer. Recommend this be done on cooking pots and pans, too. Keeps residual metal from being ingested and keeps the pans in better shape so they last longer.
Use a plastic woven dish scrubber instead of the green scour pads. Let the chemical sit for a little longer and scrub a little longer. Recommend you do the same technique for your dishes, too -- using dish appropriate cleaning supplies, of course. Your pans will last longer and you will reduce the micro dose of metals that end up in your food.
@@wellnesspathforme6236 I wouldn't scrub it at all. I've never seen a throttle body in a modern engine that was dirty enough to cause idle issues. If it is, you have other issues. If it does need cleaned, use a lint free cloth and some throttle body cleaner.
Our family car is a 2015 holden commodore sv6 wagon. Yesterday we took it to the mechanic because the RPM was quite low (around 500, should be 750-1000) and it stalled a few times. I did some research and it said a vacuum leak or a dirty throttle body were the two most common causes of this issue and I was right! the mechanic said it was the throttle body so he gave it a clean and the car is back to normal!
Great video. Just got done on my Honda. Really easy maintenance. I disconnected the battery. Took it off completely so that I can do the backside. It was extremely dirty. I bought the car secondhand. Looks as if this has never been done. Lost a little coolant. But that was ok. Now how does the relearn process process goes on a Honda ?
Perform a Honda throttle body relearn Reinstall the Honda throttle body using a new gasket and torque to specifications. Now that the carbon buildup is gone, you must “teach” the computer where the fully closed position is. This is called a Honda throttle body relearn or Honda throttle body reset. Shops perform a Honda throttle body reset with a scan tool, but you can perform it manually by following this procedure: 1) Turn the ignition key to the RUN position for 2-seconds. Do not start the engine. 2) Start the engine and run it at 3,000 RPM until the radiator fans come on. 3) Then let the ending idle for five minutes with no loads (lights, heated seats, rear defogger, blower motor, radio, etc OFF) 4) After five minutes, shut off the engine.
I didn't take throttle body out on my chevy express it is very easy to access when you take mas and ducting off. Man that thing didn't look so bad at first but when I pushed on it it was seized all the gunk I was getting out with shop towl was astonighing... letting it sit overnight to evaporate any fumes left over. Squeaky clean and I can't wait to have my performance and mpg back... I will update when I start her in the am :)
Best film on Throttle Body cleaning + 100s very useful tips for many other car projects. Thank you very much for such a detailed film. Can you immerse the removed throttle body in the degreaser and after washing it go over with throttle body cleaner? And can you avoid that procedure with resetting the TB position? I don't have VCDS. Thank you again.
Always use tb cleaner and clean towels, qtips. Do not use straight carb cleaner as it can destroy certain plastics. You can spray the intake opening down too.
Thats what I used. I didn't even remove the throttle body and just sprayed blindly all over it since I couldn't see what it looked like inside anyway. I noticed that there was a difference in how the car responded. One can also repeat the process at a later point though. Of course the best is to just remove it all together but if it involves reprogramming it and getting a new gasket if not available, it's better to avoid it.
Always check to see if it's okay to move the plate manually on your particular car. You may mess up the settings. I was able to gently move my plate on my 2015 impala 3.6. The computer may adjust the calibration, or you may need to do a simple procedure to recalibrate.
Another method to re learn your idol.. Start the car and let it get up to operating temperature Press your emergency brake in. Pressed the brake paddle And put your car and drive. Keep your foot on the brake.. Let the car idle for atleast one minute and then turn on the AC and let idle for atleast 1 minute Final release the E brake and take it for a quick drive so it will re learn the way you drive Done!!!💪
The Throttle Body Relearn Procedure for 5th Gen camaro is much simpler: Idle for 3 mins, then turn off car for 1 min, then idle again for 3 mins. If it's still not idling correctly, take it for a spin at 44+ mph and then let it idle again. Voila.
Not Telling I have a 5th gen having that problem should I just do those steps when I’m at 44mph I just let go again till it idles how?? Sorry for my ignorance I know nothing about mechanic work. But mine is just wants to take off I cleaned the throttle body and know I try to come to a red light and all it wants to do is take off fast or jump like all accelerated it’s weird. Don’t have no check engine light nothing but that
Great video...You approach the technical side and the common sense side very well.. Now I won't go and spray dirt from the throttle body into the engine . I'll just spray some on a cloth or shop towel and clean by hand. I don't suspect this particular car has a very dirty throttle body. Looks like I'll soon find out.
2 QUESTIONS. 1. Will cleaning the throttle body as described be as good as buying a replacement? Some Golf TBs cost $500 +/-, maybe they are much better than self-cleaned? 2. Is there an air filter that should be replaced more often to help prevent the junk from building up in TB in the first place? I have a 2013 Golf, 48,500 miles, was driven up north & sold in TX
Toyotas just disconnect the battery for a few minutes. Itl forget everything. All the throttle and adjusted fuel mapping are reset, which is totally annoying cuz after disconnecting the battery its totally not uncommon for a vehicle to run rough or even stall for like a day as the computer relearns and adapts.
trollaphobic most Toyotas have a capacitor in the computer to store power for a minute or so. if you change the battery quickly it'll still remember. I've done it a few times on multiple Toyotas.
Thank you for this video. The shop was trying to replace it. But it just needed to be cleaned. You saved me money! I subscribed so o can see more ways to save. Thank man!
having some idling issues with my mitsibishi shogun pinin 1.8, to the point where now it is starting up but after around 2 minutes it gets very low revs then cuts out all together.... reading a lot about throttle body being a common issue with this model so will give this a try! thanks so much :D
Great website. Just bought a 2014 Jetta SE 1.8L for my youngest child. It ran ran fine but suddenly the EPC light came on accompanied by a little sluggishness when accelerating(not stalling or stopping). It also felt like it was shaking a little. After a very expensive trip to the dealer they replaced the colling fans as well as the coils and the spark plugs. It ran fine for a bout day ad a half, and then the EPC light came back on along with the same sluggishness(just didnt have the get up and go). I have a local mechanic that came highly referred so I am not going back to the dealer. Without running for a code is it more likely this is an issue with the throttle body or pedal harness? Thanks again for the advice.
Got this done in my local vw garage 185 euro to get it cleans.only reason I brought it was I have no scan tool to reset set it back up correctly again interesting to see the process
Thanks a lot for this useful video. I have a 2011 Vw Polo 1.6 TDI DSG car. When I stop car engine shakes and a sound comes like "kis kis kis". One of mechanic said "problem on throttle" and other mechanic said "I checked throttle it close comletely, problem on flywheel". What do you think about this problem?
There are also some vehicles that have two coolant hoses (inlet/outlet) running through the throttle body (like on a 2013 Hyundai Sonata). Cleaning procedures have you unscrew the throttle body from the intake but not disconnecting the coolant hoses and cleaning in the engine bay. Relearn procedure is: The battery must read above 10-volts and engine temperature must be above 41.5 degrees for learning to complete successfully. 1) Turn the ignition key ON for at least 10 seconds and then OFF for at least 10 seconds. This procedure allows the ECM to automatically learn the throttle valve position.
Green Scrubby pad was a good recommendation. Toothbrush gunks up quickly and pads go further and work well to reach if you don't want to take throttle body off. (2004 Sienna ltd 6cyl)
Its good you warned about cleaning throttle body attached.. some youtube junkies suggested that.. Also thanks for that clamp spray suggestion. I got a rusted bolt there. But the alignment is not under DIY.
I’m a fan of your channel. I changed the spark plugs and I unplugged the throttle body to clean on my ‘08 Sienna, now the car doesn’t even idle. It runs for 5 seconds then shuts off. Do I have to reset and relearn the throttle body?
I just did this to my 2005 GMC Canyon 3.5l (also the MAF with MAF cleaner) today. It was generating P0506 codes (idle lower than expected), which I could not find a direct answer to fix it. This process fixed it, now it idles around 700 vs 500 RPM.

Great video and clear explanation. I like how careful you are and the cautions you advise. Thanks
Great video appropriate all the videos you put out alway super informative I own a 2010 Silverado that’s need a cleaning what kind of affordable device could I buy to reset the throttle body
Just did my 06 Jeep Grand Cherokee (replace IAC Valve too) following your video. Just what to reach out and say thx video was perfect step by step. Jeep feels better, runs smoother. Again thx
This vid was really well done. I appreciate it.
Definitely
I have never heard of anyone here in Denmark who remember to clean the throttle body. Thanks to show me how it should be done.
Yup, same with my mums Punto
@@miralemnermina142 Haha my mum has a punto. I am afraid to touch it because it just seems to be falling apart by its own.
zuilok dude my mk4 vr6 had so much shit in there...
@@zuilok Which gen one? This one has +200 000km and has been abused all his life but it's reliable as fuck
That is how my MK3 was too. LOL
How to lubricate the throttle plate shaft and what grease is used?
@@dayohadayhart it should really never require lubrication.
Perform a Honda throttle body relearn
Reinstall the Honda throttle body using a new gasket and torque to specifications. Now that the carbon buildup is gone, you must “teach” the computer where the fully closed position is. This is called a Honda throttle body relearn or Honda throttle body reset.
Shops perform a Honda throttle body reset with a scan tool, but you can perform it manually by following this procedure:
1) Turn the ignition key to the RUN position for 2-seconds. Do not start the engine.
2) Start the engine and run it at 3,000 RPM until the radiator fans come on.
3) Then let the ending idle for five minutes with no loads (lights, heated seats, rear defogger, blower motor, radio, etc OFF)
4) After five minutes, shut off the engine.
Anyone know how to do a relearn on a 2003 VW Passat W8 wagon (4.0 L) throttle body?
I'm not a mechanic, but this video seems very thorough. Good job!
Thank you
Great video and tip about the Key-On relearn
Thanks
I didn't take throttle body out on my chevy express it is very easy to access when you take mas and ducting off. Man that thing didn't look so bad at first but when I pushed on it it was seized all the gunk I was getting out with shop towl was astonighing... letting it sit overnight to evaporate any fumes left over. Squeaky clean and I can't wait to have my performance and mpg back... I will update when I start her in the am :)
How is she runnin?

Awesome job cleaning T.B. But why did you leave the intake manifold so dirty (7:29-7:35)???
HumbleMachanic Sir........I have to say your vids are so informative and man you really know what your doing. with ya style nature thankyou.
I appreciate that!

Very helpful, did the same yesterday now watching to double check everything. Thanks man!
Btw electrical contact cleaner works just as good. Probably safer on plastics too.
Start the car and let it get up to operating temperature
Press your emergency brake in.
Pressed the brake paddle And put your car and drive. Keep your foot on the brake..
Let the car idle for atleast one minute and then turn on the AC and let idle for atleast 1 minute
Final release the E brake and take it for a quick drive so it will re learn the way you drive
Done!!!💪
The Throttle Body Relearn Procedure for 5th Gen camaro is much simpler: Idle for 3 mins, then turn off car for 1 min, then idle again for 3 mins. If it's still not idling correctly, take it for a spin at 44+ mph and then let it idle again. Voila.
I can’t do that, mine is standard 😬😂
Finally, some CORRECT automotive advice.
Just had to do this to my car. Was running like crap and I knew what it was right away. Runs great now!
Cleaning the TB and MAFS feels oddly satisfying to me
Hi there. do i has to disconnect the bactery termial. or not.
Great video Charles!!! Keep them coming. Happy Holidays to you and your family
Thanks for putting it simple and easy terms. I will be checking out more of your videos.
Great video, why are you not wearing nitrate gloves, they can deal with the chemicals better.
I didn't have any at the time. LOL IT was just before I got the green ones I have been wearing.
Thank you for this video. The shop was trying to replace it. But it just needed to be cleaned. You saved me money! I subscribed so o can see more ways to save. Thank man!
Cool! and thank you for the help. You rock!
Fantastic video. Thank you for actually taking the unit off.
Are you certain I need to use an old toothbrush?
He said a cheap new one is fine too
It’s how I get my wife to use a new brush. Haha she holds on to them too long
Looool hanging her out to dry XD poor misses H. @@HumbleMechanic
You could also use your brother's toothbrush like the other youtuber.
Oof this hits home lol, clean vw throttle body's daily at work. Customers really notice the difference when done properly
Does you manually moving the throttle up and down mess up the throttle “calibration”? Lol
Hello my friend... If loss calibration how I can restore in home alone?? Thanks
There's usually a screw that is used to adjust it, don't mess with it though unless you're into tuning.
having some idling issues with my mitsibishi shogun pinin 1.8, to the point where now it is starting up but after around 2 minutes it gets very low revs then cuts out all together.... reading a lot about throttle body being a common issue with this model so will give this a try! thanks so much :D
That intro song is so damn old school 😂
Hahaha I thought it was fitting. 😂
So what happened when you went to your local mechanic ? Did it fix the issue ?
Whoa you lost me when you started talking about the computer stuff at 9:07. I don't have one if those things and I ain't going to buy one
Got this done in my local vw garage 185 euro to get it cleans.only reason I brought it was I have no scan tool to reset set it back up correctly again interesting to see the process
That throttle was clean already, compared to the black one I just cleaned. My girl was like, you bought a new one... best sex ever
I think you nailed my problem at the very end. 94 yj wow nobody ever talks about this step. Relearn the throttle body Is that for real?
Finally found out what happen to Forest Gump after he quit running, became throttle body mechanic.
This is classical for "das auto" cars, full of oil inside of throttle body.
Relearn procedure is:
The battery must read above 10-volts and engine temperature must be above 41.5 degrees for learning to complete successfully.
1) Turn the ignition key ON for at least 10 seconds and then OFF for at least 10 seconds. This procedure allows the ECM to automatically learn the throttle valve position.
Your relearn procedure boils down to "use the car" 😂
Thanks!
Hard to concentrate with that R32 in the background.... come on man...
She’s pretty rad
Yeah the r32 is pretty nice, those things haul !
The scotch bright is an abrasive stuff, it damages the smooth slicky surface coating of the throttle.
Dont try this on one of fords goofy coated throttle bodies!
They make a coating same cleaner but it's anemic compared to the good stuff...
Meh, I clean it anyway with regular TB cleaner. What's it going to do, rust?
@@CheezyDee Knowing ford.
YES
@@CheezyDee They start developing problems with sticking once the coating is removed.
Green Scrubby pad was a good recommendation. Toothbrush gunks up quickly and pads go further and work well to reach if you don't want to take throttle body off. (2004 Sienna ltd 6cyl)
Excellent video .from now on we should call you Humble Mechanic PhD..nice job Doc
Hahaha. I like it
Its good you warned about cleaning throttle body attached.. some youtube junkies suggested that..
I’d guess so. Try key on, engine off, and hold the gas pedal full down for 5 seconds. Cycle the key and see.
Also go back and recheck work.
All I can say is thank, bro. This was alot of help
My audi a6 3.2 had cel and codes, it would even drop to a limp mode. This fixed em, at least so far. Ty Sir
I just did this to my 2005 GMC Canyon 3.5l (also the MAF with MAF cleaner) today. It was generating P0506 codes (idle lower than expected), which I could not find a direct answer to fix it. This process fixed it, now it idles around 700 vs 500 RPM.
Very elaborate , very clear explanation, safety issues well explained
Glad it was helpful!
question: if one does NOT do an adaptation, might the computer self adapt/learn after a few cycles after cleaning the throttle?
Finally I getting the bugs, issues cleared up. Thank you. ZZ Top.
Thanks! Clear, easy to follow, very informative!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge... From Philippines.
Awesome!! Another thing added to the list I need to do to my MKIV I'm sure it needs it lol. Great info Charles. Awesome work!
