If your vehicle is experiencing weak acceleration, or rough idle, one of the areas you can diagnose is the throttle body. Over time, the valve of the throttle body collects debris and oil as the engine sucks air through it. This buildup can cause the throttle valve to drag or stick, resulting in poor throttle response, or incorrect air volumes! In this video, Len shows you how to diagnose and clean the throttle body to get your engine performing again.

Love your videos. Do you have any videos on if a cars idle drops really low or stalls on start? its not a temp thing because it happens no matter if i just start it in the morning and even when i drive it for hours. Happens every start.

    • @jimskinner2777

also once it starts and idle drops if it dont stall it goes right back to normal idle

Doing some work on my sisters vehicle. She was having issues with all the symptoms related to the (throttle position sensor), her sensor didn't seem to be removeable (wouldn't come off the throttle body). So I went a bought a new throttle body/sensor. Informative videos, thank you! Even for guys out there that are mechanics by profession (I'm just a DIY'er), incredibly useful video.

guys, it's not always the throttle body. This video does a great job telling the problem and how to fix it. (i haven't completed the video tho) but my problem was vacuum tubes were shot. I do recommend checking from the easiest to the hardest. first, check all the tubes for cracks. Note that to change the tube even if you have a small crack! from then check the AFM (air flow meter) and throttle body. trust me if i did this from the first place i would've saved myself to much money.

On many GMs with throttle bodies the throttle plate is spring loaded when the engine is off and a DC stepper motor is engaged when the engine is running. After cleaning, idle may be high as engine re-learns idle with a now clean throttle body.

Hey love your videos. I have a similar situation with a 1994 GMC suburban that I brought for 3k 60k miles. Truck ran like a beast but mechanic recently changed the fuel lines and fuel pump. After I started getting rough starts as if was struggling to stay on but once on the road it went away. Few weeks later it suddenly would go past 2k rpm but managed to get it up to 50 mph. Took right and and parked it. I definitely check what you showed. Thanks

I’ve changed spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor and alternator and it still stalled like 10 times on the way home. I just cleaned the top part of the throttle body based on some research and it did not stall this morning and I do I have a deteriorating vacuum hose that I can see. I will try to completely remove the throttle body this weekend to get underneath the butterfly.

My car was gasping for air during acceleration at low RPM. It got worse when I turned the AC on. My reading was that the air and the fuel filter probably need some cleaning. I went to the garage this morning and he said that the Throttle Body was the culprit. He cleaned it up and I am as good as new :)

All I did to solve the idle, and occasionally stalling when pulling away issue was do a major service, fuel filter changed. And I sprayed throttle body cleaner into the throttle body hole and flap itself. I did this after the service and now my idle , running is fine!! Without taking it off. So it wasn't to bad

just got a 2010 nissan sentra sr as a fixer upper for my partner to have her own car. for 2500 I felt that it was a screaming good deal. Only issues it has are loud ac fan (not worried about that even a little, probably just leaves in the fan, or ill need to put in a new blower fan. not the end of the world) and it's slow to accelerate coming from a complete stop (after seems to be fine) so I'm hoping this is the issue. From what I'm seeing, and judging from the general dirt of the car..it just needs a good cleaning inside the throttle body. After having a subaru that had nothing but spark plug and wire issues ALL the time, this doesn't feel like that.
I think this video might have saved us a couple thousand dollars in the longrun. Either way, might as well give this throttle body a good clean for preventative measure anyhow.
Thanks for the highly informative video! Should know in the coming week if this is the issue.

Love your videos guys, they helped me save a lot of money :) I have a small issue that you might will have an idea how to deal with. I have a Suzuki alto 2011, and sometime, randomly, especially (but not only) in the first 5 -10 minutes of the operation, the viechle stalls when I press the clutch pedal during ride. I start the engine immediately back on without any problem. It might occur 1 to 4 times during those 10 minutes, and then mostly it keeps driving without any problem after that. A side note is that it happens more often during winter. The OBD scanner reveals nothing but I suspect that its about a dirty throttle body, and maybe a simple clean up hopefully solve the problem. But before I do that (its quit complicated in my car) I would like to hear your thoughts about it... again, I really appreciate your work and hope to hear your answer or somebody's else in the audience :)

I've been having similar issues for over 3 years. Seems worse when it's 100+ degrees outside. I will drive 20 miles on highway, all is great, I get to town and at stop light, notice my idle is low then when I hit the gas, my truck is revving high and NOT moving forward, then suddenly it will violently shoot forward (almost got me hit twice on left turns) then my clutch becomes harder and harder to push in with each shift change or each stop light, until clutch becomes hard as a rock in full upright position and I'm stranded, can't push in clutch so cant even start truck. I have a 95 mazda B2300 SE, has 89,000 miles and is well cared for since I got it new in 1995. By the time tow truck comes (3 to 7 hour wait time past 2 years) the shop is closed, or the truck has had time to cool and it acts and drives fine. Mechanics have kept my truck for 2 weeks and cant recreate the issue, then out of blue does it again 1 or 2 months later. Already put a new Catalytic converter and starter and NOthing worked. All the mechanics say my truck is in beautiful condition and drives great, until it does this crap to me again and leaves me stranded far from home. Any advice I love my truck and I love driving stick (which I guess are being completely phased out, which I find very sad. ) Thanks

    Nice and informative.
A quick question, Audi A4 B7. When pressing accelerator quickly from idle it makes a sound ( Stumble, knocking, clicking) from the initial press. it is alright after the press when RPM increases. Any Ideas ?

I have a 2002 Honda Accord. I Chang the sark plugs. Now it won’t ideal, but runs good at 1000 rpm
