I love your videos! It’s nice to see a quilter using affordable fabric from JoAnns too. Not everyone can afford designer fabrics. Sometimes on social media I see quilters put down fabrics from big box stores, but sometimes those affordable fabrics are just the ticket for a multitude of reasons. Thanks for making your wonderful videos! ❤
You are so sweet! Thank you! This comment makes me tear up! This is exactly what I am trying to do--give everyone affordable ideas in sewing and quilting. I am thrilled it is coming through in my videos. I have more planned, too! Stay tuned! Thank you for making my day! ❤️❤️❤️
Great video! I love how this turned out. I wouldn't have thought to flip the dark fabric. I would have rearranged the colors and put the dark ones in the corners
Rules? FOOEY! Love the way you took us through the process... inspiration at Joann's, shopping for the backing - totally didn't see that coming! Could be the fastest baby quilt ever! I can't wait to visit the beach towel clearance!
Right? Honestly, it was in complete real time. I was so disappointed when I saw the dark up against the rest of the fabrics. At first, I was going to just go with it, but I am glad I went with my gut instinct on it. I love how it looks like faded denim. ❤️
I am blown away by your idea of thinking outside the box. What an genius idea of using the towels and I also love the fact you flipped to the wrong side of the blue blocks, You have won me over as a subscriber because you offer a refreshing look and ideas on quilting. Can\t wait to watch more. Keep up the great videos.
from Gerry- Someone once told me since you paid for both sides of the fabric, don't be afraid to use both sides. It looks good in your quilt. This is such a great option. Be blessed.
This is so inspiring! As costs continue to increase for just about everything, it's great to explore ways to continue to do what we love without breaking the bank.
Thank you! I knew I wouldn't like that dark blue in the end. This has become my family's favorite quilt! I keep it on our porch. It is perfect for out there.
I rewatched this after seeing your short video. I couldn't remember what you used for the backing. I imagine you drinking lemonade while sitting on your patio with this adorable lemon quilt.
This was a really cute quilt...I think I can beat your cost of a quilt...I recently was trying to do something with all the scraps so I made a string quilt...so far no cost...then I used all the leftover batting and pieced it together...no cost...so the final was the backing and that was a sheet that I no longer used that was still very nearly unused...again no cost... Finished it off with scrap binding and a 46 x 46 quilt. I donated it to my church for our building fund and we raised $500.
Woohoo! I love it! I have done a few no-cost quilts (actually have a non-cost event happening next weekend), but you may have me beat since the donation raised $500! Amazing! ❤️ Thank you for sharing!
I’m learning so much from you. I’m relatively new to quilting and sometimes I’m kind of rigid, so to watch someone use towels and use up their micro scraps and create beautiful, useful things is just incredible ❤
Years ago when we traveled to South Carolina to visit relatives, we used beach towels to cover our luggage, etc. in the back of our station wagon. Then when we went into motels for the night, we would take the towels inside and use them as extra pillows or blankets. Your quilt would be good for travel too.
LOL! ME TOO! I was making the video in real time and when I saw it on the design wall, I panicked a bit. For a minute I thought about just going with it, but I am glad i changed my mind. I just couldn't move forward with that dark blue! 😂
I use a lot of JoAnn’s fabrics, but I will not use her precuts ever again. I have bought 2 Kelley rolls and one fat quarter. All were cut so badly they were unusable. You got lucky. I like your idea. The towel backing was genius.
Good to know! I haven't used any precuts from JoAnn's until now, but I am hoping to use them again. I will proceed with caution for sure. Thank you for this tip and for your kind words. Those towels are so soft! I love how it feels on the back!
What a great picnic quilt and for the beach 🏖️. Cute idea. I love doing a half inch shadow stitching on my seams, too. In this case, I would have also used a marking pencil and ruler to make diagonal lines going through the squares and stitched on those. Traditional but secures the squares and the geometric design contrasts well with the floral prints and wavy design on the towel backing.
😊 You are so welcome! I love that method, but it's probably because I learned to do it that way 25 years ago. This old dog needs to learn some new tricks, too, maybe? LOL! Thank you for the chuckle!
Great idea to use the towels to back the quilt. I have often wondered if this would work. Have the confidence to try it now - thank you. I keep backing costs, and fabric waste, down by purchasing fleece throws. I have also begun to use the large leftover pieces as a lightweight batting. It gives a lovely drape to the quilt.
I love those prints on the fabric. They are my favorite colors and look so summery. I confess that I also bought some (4 packs) and I am saving them for something special for me. Not to sell or give away, but just for me. ❤️
So pretty! I thought for sure you were going to buy a sheet, tablecloth, or throw blanket for the back, but you surprised me with the towels! You did a great job sewing them together.
You are so creative. What a great idea. Since I live near the beach it would be good to have for a table cloth if you come across a grotty looking table for your picnic, or a lap quilt while sitting in your beach chair when the wind is blowing to stop getting sand blasted, a picnic blanket down on the grass. It would be handy. Thanks for this Kris. I am off to Bribie on the weekend and after that you will hear from me.
Oh my goodness I love that quilt! What a genius idea. When you mentioned go outside and read your book and cuddle with it I thought yes with a glass of lemonade. Thank you so much I think I will be doing one
YAY! I hope it turned out beautiful and your grandsons love it! I just got back from vacation, so I am just seeing this now. Sorry about that! I would love to hear how it turned out and see pictures! My email is sewthedistance@gmail.com .
Oh, sorry! You can’t see the lines, however. They are covered by Terry cloth loops. 😬 If you want to send me an email, I can send you a photo of it. My email address is sewthedistance@gmail.com . Hope this helps!
I love this! Some projects are worth getting fussy over... and others, you just feel like making something that is cute and usable, but without breaking the bank or taking tons of time to do. I could see making a version using a few layers of old flat sheets as the combo batting/backing, too! I think it's time for me to whip up a couple "summer quilts" for my niece and nephew... 😉
What a fantastic project, and turning the blue block to the back was such a great idea as it totally made the quilt look perfect!! Such a fantastic idea for a quilt that will be so handy for going to the beach or a swimming pool, or just to use on the porch or patio!! Great job!
Thanks so much! 😊 I am currently sitting on my couch next to my dog who is laying on that exact quilt! Surprisingly, it has helped up super well. I have washed it at least 30 time now. I am impressed! I love that you love this one. It was a super fun and fast make! Thanks so much for watching and sharing your thoughts on this!
This turned out great! I would have never thought of using beach towels. What a wonderful idea! I may make one for my 4 year old granddaughter who loves to cuddle in her "ducky" towel when she bathes here when she sleeps over. I bet my 16 and 18 year old granddaughters would like one as well. It would make a great beach or picnic blanket. Wondering if the towels would fade when washing?
So glad you love it! Love that you have plans to make them, too! Hmmm...they may fade. Good point! I wonder if it would just add to the softness. Thank you for this!
Thank you so much! I love this quilt! It is so soft! I still need to add some quilting to it, but I am loving it so far. I hope it washes well, too! Hoping to give an update this week.
My go-to economical tip is to use the inexpensive fleece blankets for batting. Walmart typically has the solid color, cheap fleece blankets for $3 each. They usually measure 50x60.
Great idea! Thank you for this! I think Tracy from The Sewing Channel used a fleece blanket recently on her blue and white quilt. Such a great idea! You are both so smart. ❤️
Love, love, your reduce cost quilt, using beach towels. I've used throw blankets & attached the self binding method on two wide sides less fabrics waste. Flip & hem .😊
Thank you SO MUCH! You are so sweet! I have some more videos planned, although I have been under the weather lately. Hoping to get back to creating this week! Thanks again for your kind words. 🥰
I washed and dried it! Here's a quick update: th-cam.com/video/ZWLd7W9Io6Y/w-d-xo.html
Love the fabric prints.
I love your videos! It’s nice to see a quilter using affordable fabric from JoAnns too. Not everyone can afford designer fabrics. What a fun, low stress, thinking outside the box project! Flipping the dark squares over was genius.
Thank you so much! ❤️
What a fun quilt! I love that you flipped the darker fabric!
A towel! Genius! This would make a fun picnic quilt.
Thank you, Fallon! It is so soft and cozy! Love it for a picnic quilt. ❤️
Wouldn't it though?
Great video! I love how this turned out. I wouldn't have thought to flip the dark fabric. I would have rearranged the colors and put the dark ones in the corners
That’s a good idea, too!
That was my idea too.
Here I thought you were going to use a fleece blanket. Towels you were totally thinking outside the box. Brilliant! My gears are turning, thank you.
Thank you! ❤️
Stitch a outline of a lemon on the squares. It would add a custom quilting touch and keep your squares from sagging in the middle.
Great idea! Thanks for the tip! If i make another one, I think I will do this. I already quilted this one on the diagonal, but I love this idea! ❤️
Cute little quilt.
Thank you!
Thank you for the quick, quilt idea. It would be good to make for a picnic even to use as a table cloth, or floor play quilt for a baby. Love it.
Great ideas! Thank you so much!
I LOVE the idea of using a towel for the backing - especially for summer quilts!!
Thank you! I love how soft it is!
I love how you get so excited when you cheat the quilt police!! Lol it turned out cute!! ❤
LOL! I haven't thought it of it that way, but I think that's exactly what I get excited about. Thank you for this! ❤️😂
Rules? FOOEY! Love the way you took us through the process... inspiration at Joann's, shopping for the backing - totally didn't see that coming! Could be the fastest baby quilt ever! I can't wait to visit the beach towel clearance!
Also, now I really want to make a black, white and yellow quilt...🙄😉
Thank you! So happy it inspired you! Ohhhhh-clearance is a great idea! ❤️
Beach towel backing - Genius! 😮😮
Thank you! I wasn't sure how it would turn out, but I absolutely love it! I will use towels again, for sure!
The reverse of that blue fabric matches the green fabric better, too. What a fun summery quilt!
Good idea! You’re right! ❤️
I love BIRTHED quilts.... my Nonnie use to make a lot of them when I was little ..... She used the same technique that used .
I love that this made you think of your Nonnie! ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you so much for sharing!
Love the risk you took with the towel. Washing the towels was a must. You did it !!
Thanks! I am so glad I was washed them!
Great idea. Using the towel for the back.
Thank you! It is so soft. I will definitely use towels as a backing again.
Good idea. Sometimes I go to goodwill and get a sheet of a tablecloth for backing
I love doing that, too, especially with flannel sheets. That are so cozy! 🥰
When looking at this quilt, can you tell that the blue is backwards?? Was a real cute idea, and clever!
Thank you!
I don't think you can tell. No one has mentioned it. I also do this all the time. After all, you pay for both sides of the fabric, right? 😀
It absolutely does look so much better
Right? Honestly, it was in complete real time. I was so disappointed when I saw the dark up against the rest of the fabrics. At first, I was going to just go with it, but I am glad I went with my gut instinct on it. I love how it looks like faded denim. ❤️

Love the navy blocks turned like you did, makes it so much prettier!
Thank you! I think so, too!
Who’s a clever girl then! How ingenious to use towels. Absolutely fab. Thanks Kris xx
Thank you so much! ❤️
Very creative turning the blue fabric…..I think I might try this for a picnic table cloth. Thanks
You are so welcome! I love that you are going to try this! ❤️
from Gerry- Someone once told me since you paid for both sides of the fabric, don't be afraid to use both sides. It looks good in your quilt. This is such a great option. Be blessed.
That's a great tip. And it really does look good! Blessings to you, too!
Towels what a wonderful idea. Love this little quilt. Great baby gift idea and it won’t break the bank. 👍🏼😁
Thank you so much! This would be a perfect baby quilt! Great idea!
This is so inspiring! As costs continue to increase for just about everything, it's great to explore ways to continue to do what we love without breaking the bank.
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed this budget-friendly quilt. I agree--we need to be a bit more frugal these days. ❤️
I was utterly fascinated by this!! I don’t quilt but I could certainly do this. Love it.
YAY! Thank you! You can do it! If you try, let me know if you have questions! Happy to help!
So I was surprised at your backing!! 😯 Way to think out of the box Kris, I also really like that you turned the dark blue fabric over, good call!!!
Thank you so much! I can't believe how soft it is! Love this one!
Okay....now I have to make one.....too stinking cute!!!!
Yay! So glad it inspired you! ❤️
🔥Sooooo CREATIVE with the towel❣
Quilt juices are flowin' now LOL🤣
GREAT video Kris🤩
Thanks, Tracy! ❤️❤️❤️
I like this, great for outside on the porch if alittle chill is in the air😊😊😊
Oh, it would be perfect for that! I may have to put it on my front porch now. Great idea! ❤️
Very creative. You did a great job. Was fun to watch your enthusiasm. It's nice when we can still get excited over a new project
Thank you! I love that sense of excitement, too! ❤️
Great idea to use towels for the backing. ❤
Thank you!
You were so right to turn the blue. Just love this quilt.
Thank you! It’s a great quilt!
a very smart choice turning that dark blue fabric to the wrong side. it really did pop. towels - I never would have thought of that. looks amazing.
Thank you! I do this almost every single day on my back porch! LOL! ❤️
Glad I am not the only one to flip fabric upside down to get the look I need/want
I love doing it! Glad I’m not alone, either. We are in great company! 🥰
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!
What a fun project! Great for camping or around the pool!
YES! Thank you so much! Glad you love it! It would be perfect for those things! ❤️
I’m learning so much from you. I’m relatively new to quilting and sometimes I’m kind of rigid, so to watch someone use towels and use up their micro scraps and create beautiful, useful things is just incredible ❤
YAY! I am so happy this has helped you think outside the box some! No rules, just fun!
A great idea! Perfect for a backyard sit-upon for children. Thanks Kris
Thank you so much! It would be perfect for that! Great idea!

Then when we went into motels for the night, we would take the towels inside and use them as extra pillows or blankets. Your quilt would be good for travel too.
What a great idea! I love it! Thank you!
This is how I make some of my specialty quilts ❤❤❤
Love it! Did you use towels or Joann’s precuts? Or both? Thank you for watching!
What a clever idea! The flipping, the toweling…. Love it!
Thank you! So glad you like it! ❤️
Dito for all comments. Good idea for todller bath towel. Thank you
Ohhh! YES! This would be perfect for that! Great idea! Thank you. ❤️
I bought that fabric last year and made placemats and table runners for my daughter's. I think I have some left. Might have to give your idea a try.
Ohhh! I am sure they are beautiful! I am happy to hear you are going to try this! It is a fun quilt to make!
I'm so glad that you flipped that blue over; it was really sticking in my craw. What a great/fun idea to use a beach towel for the back!
LOL! ME TOO! I was making the video in real time and when I saw it on the design wall, I panicked a bit. For a minute I thought about just going with it, but I am glad i changed my mind. I just couldn't move forward with that dark blue! 😂
So glad it turned out! Love the backing and will definitely do a backing like yours ☺️
Yay! Thank you! We love this quilt! We use it more than I ever thought we would. So cuddly!
I use a lot of JoAnn’s fabrics, but I will not use her precuts ever again. I have bought 2 Kelley rolls and one fat quarter. All were cut so badly they were unusable. You got lucky. I like your idea. The towel backing was genius.

Absolutely beautiful! I would have never thought to use towels for the backing. Thank you so much for showing us how to think outside the box.
You are so welcome! So happy you love it! ❤️
I would love the look of these fabrics in a Dresden hand bag.
That would be beautiful!
I have several quilt tops. Love this idea
Yay! So happy you like it! ❤
Great idea to add the additional quilting needed but not make it stiff.
Great idea! I just got back from vacation, so I haven't finished quilting this one. I love this idea--thank you! I will try it!
You matched that towel seam great.
Thank you! The stripes helped. ❤️
gr8 job love the beach towel as backing. Hey anything goes when your a modern day quilter Yah...❤
Yes! Thank you! So true! ❤️
What a great idea. I would never of thought using a beach towel for the backing. Love how it turned out.!!
Thank you! ❤️
What a sweet little quilt! You taught me something. Taping the backing to the floor. I am an old dog, and I did learn a new trick. Thanks for sharing.
😊 You are so welcome! I love that method, but it's probably because I learned to do it that way 25 years ago. This old dog needs to learn some new tricks, too, maybe? LOL! Thank you for the chuckle!
I love your ideas and spontaneous personality!
Thank you so much!
That's a great idea! Thank you for the tip! So glad you enjoyed the video, too!
I love those prints on the fabric. They are my favorite colors and look so summery. I confess that I also bought some (4 packs) and I am saving them for something special for me. Not to sell or give away, but just for me. ❤️
Love this! Yes, we need to buy more for us! LOL! I fall into the same dilemma. ❤️ So happy you love this!
This is something we did in the 70s and it is a coverlet because a quilt has 3parts. Nice job thanks for sharing.
Thanks!
I have used old washcloths to line bowl cozies. Works great!! Good job😊
Oh wow! Thanks for the tip! I’m going to try this on bowl cozies. Awesome idea!
Love that you took up this challenge. Turned out great! Love your videos.
Thanks so much! 😊
So pretty! I thought for sure you were going to buy a sheet, tablecloth, or throw blanket for the back, but you surprised me with the towels! You did a great job sewing them together.
Those are all great ideas, too! Hmmm-you are giving ideas for another personal challenge! Lol! Thank you!
You're a smart cookie - that's a terrific project. I love the way it turned out.
Thank you! I wasn’t sure if it would work or not. I am so happy it did! ❤️
Love, love, love it! Such a creative idea to use large towels. I think I need one of these, too. Thanks for sharing. Blessings to y'all.
Thank you! It is such a cozy quilt! I think I need to make a bigger one now. ❤️
That was a great idea reversing the dark blue square. Also the towels. It's beautiful. Thank you for your ideas. ❤️
You are so welcome! ❤️
Thank you, Sue! Great idea! Enjoy Brible! Looking forward to catching up!
Oh my goodness I love that quilt! What a genius idea. When you mentioned go outside and read your book and cuddle with it I thought yes with a glass of lemonade. Thank you so much I think I will be doing one
Ohhhh, yes! Lemonade sounds perfect with this quilt! LOL! So glad you love this one!
Nice job. Enjoyed watching how much fun you had.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! 🥰
So cool! I’m halfway finished making one! Just waiting for the dryer to finish with my towels. My grandsons will love these for the beach. 😀
YAY! I hope it turned out beautiful and your grandsons love it! I just got back from vacation, so I am just seeing this now. Sorry about that! I would love to hear how it turned out and see pictures! My email is sewthedistance@gmail.com .
Super cute and so easy to make. Great idea to use the beach towels as backing! I bet that is so soft and cozy. Love it!❤☀️🍋🐚🏝️🌊🍋
Thank you! It is so cozy! I am loving it. It needs a bit more quilting, but once it’s done, it’s sure to be a favorite.
@@SewtheDistance please give us an update when you add more quilting 😍
Sure! Here it is! th-cam.com/users/shortsZWLd7W9Io6Y?feature=share
I’ve actually done that recently because my fabric was way too bright for my project
Way to go sis!
Thank you! 😊 Glad I am not the only one who does this. ❤️
Love the fun and affordable quilt and towel backing.
Thank you, Joe! Wait until you see (and feel) this one! I am so surprised at how well it turned out!
Nice job Kris! I loved that you challenged yourself in "real time". 😀
Thanks! I thought I really hit a road block when I saw that blue fabric on the board. 😂 You never know!
Nice project. Wish you would have shown the back at the end. Would love to see how the quilted lines looked.
Yay! Lucky niece and nephew! So happy it inspired you! Love the idea of using sheets! Great idea! Thank you for sharing!
Cute& nice when you don't have a lot of money to spend!
Thank you! ❤️
Thank you Chris. I learn so much from you. I think I’m going to try this. 😊
You are so welcome! I am happy to hear you are learning from me. That makes my heart happy. Thank you for this! ❤️❤️❤️
How clever! Turning the fabric over.
Isn't it! Sometimes the wrong side is right. LOL 😂
Ha ha ha! I have also turned fabric backwards, including a wide quilt backing. Good buy, also.
I love it! Great minds think alike! 😘
Such a great challenge with great results!!!🥰
Thank you so much! I love this quilt! It is so soft! I still need to add some quilting to it, but I am loving it so far. I hope it washes well, too! Hoping to give an update this week.
Ooohhhh now I have a solid way to use up the rest of some layer cakes! Yay!
Woohoo! So glad it helped!
Wonderful idea to use the back side of the fabric! This would probably help a lot with a log cabin quilt, if you needed more light fabrics.
Thank you! Yes! This works really well with light/dark quilts like the log cabin. So happy it helped!
Great idea for backing!
Thank you! It is so soft!
So creative! Great video! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much! ❤️
I use my dust buster hand vacuum to get rid of fuzz and threads😍
That's awesome! Thank you for watching and sharing!
Sewing a button in the middle of each block would look sooo cute
Oh, great idea! Thank you!
Love, love, your reduce cost quilt, using beach towels. I've used throw blankets & attached the self binding method on two wide sides less fabrics waste. Flip & hem .😊
Thank you so much! The blanket idea a great, too! Thank you for sharing! 🥰
Thanks
You're welcome! 🥰
Love, love, love it!!!❤❤❤
Thank you! ❤
I just love this quilt. What a super idea! I enjoy your videos and have learned some great tips. Keep up your videos and enthusiasm!!😊
Thank you SO MUCH! You are so sweet! I have some more videos planned, although I have been under the weather lately. Hoping to get back to creating this week! Thanks again for your kind words. 🥰
That came out super cute, and flipping the fabric over was a great idea because it brought that blue closer to the range of the other fabrics.
Thank you! I agree! ❤️
Cute! I can’t do free motion so I have tied some quilts! That works great too!! Great idea…. Would really be cute for a donation quilt!! Ty
My pleasure! YES! This would make a great donation quilt and it would be great tied, too! Thanks so much for watching and sharing!
I would never have thought to flip the fabric over!
It made all the difference, didn't it? ❤️
Nice. I love blue and yellow together. Great job!
Thank you! ❤️
I like the way the wrong side of the blue squares have a vintage look to them...
Thank you! It really does! ❤️
