    I washed and dried it! Here's a quick update: th-cam.com/video/ZWLd7W9Io6Y/w-d-xo.html

    I love your videos! It’s nice to see a quilter using affordable fabric from JoAnns too. Not everyone can afford designer fabrics. Sometimes on social media I see quilters put down fabrics from big box stores, but sometimes those affordable fabrics are just the ticket for a multitude of reasons. Thanks for making your wonderful videos! ❤

      You are so sweet! Thank you! This comment makes me tear up! This is exactly what I am trying to do--give everyone affordable ideas in sewing and quilting. I am thrilled it is coming through in my videos. I have more planned, too! Stay tuned! Thank you for making my day! ❤️❤️❤️

    What a fun, low stress, thinking outside the box project! Flipping the dark squares over was genius.

    Here I thought you were going to use a fleece blanket. Towels you were totally thinking outside the box. Brilliant! My gears are turning, thank you.

    What a fun quilt! I love that you flipped the darker fabric!
    A towel! Genius! This would make a fun picnic quilt.

    Great video! I love how this turned out. I wouldn't have thought to flip the dark fabric. I would have rearranged the colors and put the dark ones in the corners

  • @objectiveobserver4278
    @objectiveobserver4278 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Stitch a outline of a lemon on the squares. It would add a custom quilting touch and keep your squares from sagging in the middle.

      Great idea! Thanks for the tip! If i make another one, I think I will do this. I already quilted this one on the diagonal, but I love this idea! ❤️

    Rules? FOOEY! Love the way you took us through the process... inspiration at Joann's, shopping for the backing - totally didn't see that coming! Could be the fastest baby quilt ever! I can't wait to visit the beach towel clearance!

    This was a really cute quilt...I think I can beat your cost of a quilt...I recently was trying to do something with all the scraps so I made a string quilt...so far no cost...then I used all the leftover batting and pieced it together...no cost...so the final was the backing and that was a sheet that I no longer used that was still very nearly unused...again no cost... Finished it off with scrap binding and a 46 x 46 quilt. I donated it to my church for our building fund and we raised $500.

    • @SewtheDistance
      @SewtheDistance  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Woohoo! I love it! I have done a few no-cost quilts (actually have a non-cost event happening next weekend), but you may have me beat since the donation raised $500! Amazing! ❤️ Thank you for sharing!

    Years ago when we traveled to South Carolina to visit relatives, we used beach towels to cover our luggage, etc. in the back of our station wagon. Then when we went into motels for the night, we would take the towels inside and use them as extra pillows or blankets. Your quilt would be good for travel too.

    I use a lot of JoAnn’s fabrics, but I will not use her precuts ever again. I have bought 2 Kelley rolls and one fat quarter. All were cut so badly they were unusable. You got lucky. I like your idea. The towel backing was genius.

    • @SewtheDistance

      Good to know! I haven't used any precuts from JoAnn's until now, but I am hoping to use them again. I will proceed with caution for sure. Thank you for this tip and for your kind words. Those towels are so soft! I love how it feels on the back!

    What a great picnic quilt and for the beach 🏖️. Cute idea. I love doing a half inch shadow stitching on my seams, too. In this case, I would have also used a marking pencil and ruler to make diagonal lines going through the squares and stitched on those. Traditional but secures the squares and the geometric design contrasts well with the floral prints and wavy design on the towel backing.

    I was watching. You know if you would have left the blue right side out. Then put a dark blue backing and had put a dark blue binding around the quilt. The blue in the quilt would most likely pop and make it look neat too. You can kind of get the idea when you see that blue towel laying against the front when you can see them both together. The mute color looks good. But I really believe you could have pulled the dark blue out with dark blue binding and been a beautiful quilt also

    What a fantastic project, and turning the blue block to the back was such a great idea as it totally made the quilt look perfect!! Such a fantastic idea for a quilt that will be so handy for going to the beach or a swimming pool, or just to use on the porch or patio!! Great job!

      Thanks so much! 😊 I am currently sitting on my couch next to my dog who is laying on that exact quilt! Surprisingly, it has helped up super well. I have washed it at least 30 time now. I am impressed! I love that you love this one. It was a super fun and fast make! Thanks so much for watching and sharing your thoughts on this!

      LOL! ME TOO! I was making the video in real time and when I saw it on the design wall, I panicked a bit. For a minute I thought about just going with it, but I am glad i changed my mind. I just couldn't move forward with that dark blue! 😂

    Your quilt is very nice on both sides. I have wondered if anyone has ever used terry cloth to back a quilt? You just answered that question for me. Please don't forget to deep clean, oil, lubricate, change your needle, and polish your sewing machine. It has had a hard workout.
    I hemmed golf towels for a new Towel Factor that opened up here over twenty years ago. They were trying to get started (and needed samples for their sales staff to show). There were not any industrial sewing machines in their Factor at the time; so, I hemmed their small towels on my home sewing machines. The problems I had were:: 1. lots of lint (I had to clean my machines every hour), 2. no industrial quality thread (I had to use cotton thread from a Quilt Shop), 3. no hemming foot large enough to turn the hems on such heavy, 100 % cotton, terry cloth fabric (I had to turn the hems by hand), 4. no industrial, heavy duty, sewing machine needles to fit my machines (the heavy quilting and denim needles I had to buy and use, from the Quilt Shop, bent and broke when they got too hot). I dulled all my scissors (many times) cutting those towels apart (from the rolls). There was lint all over my sewing area, my clothes, on me, and inside my nose and lungs. I was very happy when the job was finished. After doing that small job for them, I did not want to work for them ever again.

    Just a thought…The more quilting you do, the less soft it may become, depending on the type of stitches you choose to use. 😊 I have many old sheets, that I could cut down for use as a quilt backing. Lots of people on TH-cam use sheets they find at thrift shops for sewing/quilting projects.

      That would make a great baby quilt if you did that as it would have been about eight inches smaller all around with all that seam allowance. I wanted it bigger than that, but a wonderful idea! I’d love to see that video! Let me know it’s out. ❤️

    Using this turn out method to finish the quilt is going to be perfect for a quilt I'm making, and the backing is exactly the same size as the top. Using a plush backing, and I really don't want to add borders. This should work great!! Sometimes we all need a bit of validation to do what in our mind needs doing! Great video
