The planning with your son in the fabric store made the knock off my favorite. The memories of that quilt will always be special. Such a cute pattern too. ❤
Such a great idea Kris - and I love how your son was truly engaged in the selection and not just along for the ride. Thanks for sharing another great budget-friendly quilt!
Just by looks as we see it....l prefer the knock-off. lt seems like the color placement/contrast is better balanced. Of course, the price difference is MASSIVE!!! Good job....
Ohhh! I love the shopping footage and I love that you didn’t try to find a jelly roll with similar prints and shopped yardage! That’s a great idea! Plus yardage often has better deals when precuts don’t.
Me too! I am so surprised! I loved the designer one when I made it, but I really love the budget one now! I am looking forward to finishing them both. ❤️
I have several jelly rolls - but I’ve never paid full price. I like using designer fabrics however… I’ve gotten a fat quarter bundle from a well known designer and it was very thin fabric and frays easily. I’ve gotten some very nice fabric at both JoAnn’s and Hobby Lobby it just take time to carefully select. Thanks for this video. Good job.
I just opened a name brand jelly roll last week and let me say the strips were 2 3/8th inches. Boy, was I ticked when my blocks didn't work out. It took some math and I adjusted but I was pretty miffed as it messed up the quilt size. It had been on my shelf for a few years so I don't even know where I bought it. I do generally prefer name brand because my expectation is for a better quality fabric. You are right, you have to know the "feel" of a good fabric.
Hey 👋 Kris! Thank you for sharing your creativity and wonderful teaching video! I have a JoAnne’s 2 miles from me. I’ve never had a problem with being shorted fabric from there and I find that it is good quality when you pick and choose your lines of fabric. I think it really depends on the JoAnne’s that you use as they always cut a bit extra for straightening my fabric. I’ve certainly got “quilt shop quality” fabric too, but I’ll say that I HATE pinked edges as they all measure different even from the same line. Peaks and valleys, points and dips, whatever you call them make my sewing job soooooo much more difficult. Thanks for sharing your experience with your JoAnne’s too and one tip is that if you ask them to cut an extra inch for straightening, etc. they will happily do that. Just a quick idea. And……I like the knockoff better and I have that exact jelly roll. OOPS, one ore thing….do you have a pattern for the teal, lime and blue 1/2 square triangle quilt behind you? If anyone knows or, Kris, if you can tell me that would be great. I’ve been very interested in doing something like this, but am terrified of HST’s. I need to step out of my comfort zone.
Thank you so much! I hate those pinked edges, too! They are terrible to work with. Great tip about the fabric from Joann's! Thank you! As for the wall hanging, I have video on it! Here's a link: th-cam.com/video/u9dMcfF9Pfc/w-d-xo.html It is the same pattern, but a different layout (just turn the blocks--I talk about different layouts in the video) and different fabrics. I used Island Batiks in the wall hanging. Let me know if you have any questions! I can make another video on it, if you'd like.
Our pleasure! He is very good at color and design. I just wish he lived closer! He is in Vermont and I am in Pennsylvania. We did this back in May when he was visiting. ❤️
I’m with you on the quality issue. Perfect example, making a baby quilt for my oldest friends first grandchild. I love to use flannel for the backing…always bought at the store that I don’t buy my fabric from…I found out at my quilt shop that they carry some Moda flannel. The is no comparison it is so soft and plushy, it’s not loosely woven like the other flannels. I am absolutely in love!♥️ If that makes me a fabric snob then, sew be it!
I really enjoyed the shopping footage with your son. It would be so much fun to have a shopping buddy. Thank you for showing the sewing tips and how to sew on a budget!
Glad you enjoyed it! I wish he lived closer. He lives in Vermont and we are in Pennsylvania. It was so nice of him to take time out of his visit to help his mom! ❤️ Thank you so much for your kind words! ❤️ I am happy it helps!

Kristen, I really enjoy your tutorials. It was awesome to see your son helping select fabrics. I have a daughter that has no interest in sewing. She welcomes the quilts I make for her so I guess that's a good thing. Keep on keepin on girlfriend.
Thank you so much! I wish my son (in the video) lived closer. He is in Vermont while we are in Pennsylvania. My oldest son lives close by and is like your daughter. ❤️
Well your son is darling, and I like both quilts but the knock off is my preference ❤😊my goodness such a price differential, I did not know it would be that much of a difference
Thank you! He really does. I wish he lived closer. He is coming home this spring, so hopefully we can do another video together. Thank you for watching and for your kind words. ❤️
Your young gentleman is a peach!! I like the knockoff better because it is not quite so busy and seems a little more coherent than the designer one. However. I am also enamored with the higher end fabric because of the drape and all those other quality issues. My way of keeping costs under control is to buy a couple of must-haves at full price and the others on sale. And (with your encouragement in several videos) I am using my stash for backings and focusing on getting my stash in really good order so utilizing the fabrics is easier. Thank you for the thoughtful video on the budget friendly approach. Quilting can be a luxury activity for many people. I think they appreciate the acknowledgement that not everyone can spend top dollar for fabric. But still make beautiful quilts. You rock, Kris
Wow! Thank you so much! You are sweet! ❤️❤️❤️ Mitchell (my youngest son who is in the video) is a sweetie and loves challenges like this. I wish he lived closer! He is in Vermont and we are in Pennsylvania. My oldest son is in Pennsylvania, but he isn't into design like Mitchell is, but he has wonderful qualities, too, of course. Maybe I can get him on camera one of these days. I like the knockoff better, too, much to my surprise! I am curious as to how it will wash. Stay tuned! Great tips! I need to use my stash more, too! 😊 Again, thank you for your support and kindness. ❤️
I like them both, go with your budget . Oh you are blessed your son helped you mine they would say no way mom lol. Now if I need my car worked on or something fixed around the house they are in for that, so I'm blessed also❤
Thank you so much! If it makes you feel any better, my older son would have been rolling his eyes and asking if we could leave. LOL! They are so different! Blessings all around. ❤️
I think you did a great job with your knock off well I really enjoyed it. I also loved the JoAnn shopping trip footage it is fun to watch how other people pick fabric. I would absolutely watch it if you put out more of the shopping trip with your son.
I enjoy putting colors and fabrics together myself so seldom buy fabrics from just one line to use for a project. Part of the creative process for me is figuring that out myself. I do buy designer fabrics to use, just not collections. EXCEPT I just finished a gorgeous quilt using 20 1/3 yards of different Tilde prints ($200 with background) and I can say it’s one of my favorite quilts. It was special for my DIL so I was ok with spending that kind of money. Love your channel!
It was okay, but it really didn't "go' with the fabrics. We debated it, however, which you can see at the end. I also think the lighting at the store on camera didn't help. It really didn't match at all, unfortunately. I really wanted to put blue in it, but just couldn't find the right shade. Thank you so much for sharing this, however! And for watching! ❤️
Aren't they great? I need to quilt them. Still haven't yet. I think quilting will make them sing even more. I will definitely share them when I do finished quilting them.
I love both of them. Sometimes Mom’s say things just to make sons happy. I love the end with you and your son collaborating on the fabric. This pattern answered a question from the back of my mind. I have a collection of fabric I have put together with a specific person in mind. I’ve been holding on to it for 8 months now waiting on the right pattern. Usually these aha solutions come to me when I’m watching Tracey from The Sewing Channel. Thank you for sharing the pattern, your dupe, your tips and your thought process, not to mention the ending with your sweet son.
You are so welcome! Let me know if you have any questions as you are making this. I am happy to help. ❤️ My son is great! I only wish he lived closer, but my older son, does (also great!). He isn't as into design, however, but still a wonderful son!
Love the shopping with your son♥You always need a fabric helper! I love the budget quilt because I like red but both are great. Thanks for sharing this idea to save money.
You are so welcome! It was a lot of fun shopping with him. I wish he lived closer. He is in Vermont and we are in Pennsylvania. My oldest son lives close by, however, although he would have hated shopping for fabric. 😂
You lost me at them cutting the yardage short. It’s why I don’t shop at Joann’s anymore. I swear, they stretch the fabric! Lol. Unfortunately, some of the designer fabric isn’t printed straight either, so there is that. I have the means (and desire) to use the designer fabric, but am a bargain hunter, so very rarely pay full price. I go for the designer fabric. That being said, there are a lot of people who can’t afford designer fabric and want to quilt. So, my vote goes for buy what you can afford and like. I love this video and love that your son went with you. He looks just like you :D. I’m going to edit to add that you can pick and choose the better fabric by feel too. That allows you to find a bit of the better fabric. I like Hobby Lobby fabric, but you do have to ferret out the better feeling fabric. Sorry for the rambling. I could talk fabric forever! Lol
Thank you so much! Great ideas, too! I agree--not everyone can afford designer fabric. I am trying to be better at that and keeping that in mind with my tutorials. Thank you so much for your ideas! It is so funny---people say he looks just like me until they see my husband. He is the spitting image of him! My older son, one the other hand, is the spitting image of me. So weird how that happens! I am not sure if would be game to be in a video or now. I will have to ask him! ❤️
Thank you so much! I love his eye for color, too! Now if he would only move closer so I can take him shopping more! LOL! The website will be up soon, I hope! Working on it today!
Thank you. You just proved what I have been saying all along. I feel that the fabrics I get at the local quilt shop are so much easier to work with and the fabrics just feel of a better weight and the colors are just richer. I also liked your ending of this video; it is always interesting to see someone else's thought process as to fabric and color choices. I personally find one or two fabrics the coordinate that I absolutely love and fill in from there. Loving the fabrics help you to finish the quilt even if you are struggling with a pattern design that is a bit above your comfort zone.
You are so welcome. Very true! Great insight on this! Interestingly, some of the fabric from Joann's was super thick while others was super thin. I didn't like that either. I am curious as to how this works out when they are finished and washed. Stay tuned! I am planning an update on that. Now to get them finished....😊
I must say that I prefer the quilt with the fabrics you chose! I do know that the other fabrics are higher quality and feel better! I try to always get my designer fabrics on sale, so it might be worth it to spend a little more and get one you like better.
I like the budget colors. I enjoy designer fabrics but I watch for good sales online and never pay designer full price. Not so long ago, I wanted some 5" squares with lots of variety of colors and patterns for a children's quilt so I drove an hour to a JoAnn Fabrics, and I was really quite pleased with all the selection. But I limited myself to 6" (1/6 yd) of each fabric I liked - and I came home with a lot. The saleswoman at Joann's was so helpful and was so careful to make sure that her cuts were more than 6" on all (shop early when there is less of a crowd and they have more time to help you). I think when I make your budget quilt, I will buy more colors than you used, cut at 1/3 yd (which would give 4 strips and a leftover of 2" which you could use in a border or binding.) I live very rural so trips to an actual fabric store are special and I always allow unlimited time to browse. Anyway, I love both of your quilts and I look forward to using your design. Thank you for sharing. (I would love to hear more of your son's 'Shop With Mom" day.)
Thank you so much! Great tips! We are also very rural, with Joann's being about 30 minutes away, on a good day! I love that you are going to make it! If you have any questions, please let me know! I am happy to help! Thank you for your kind words, too! ❤️
Thank you so much! I am currently "stuck" in Las Vegas with Hurricane Hillary hitting the west coast (all flights cancelled), so for the next few days I am focusing on setting it up and responding to comments. LOL! It will be launched before leaving Vegas, or at least that is the goal! ❤️
This was such a terrific tutorial and education on designer vs discount (hate to call it that) fabric Miss Kris! Your honesty and details about the fabrics is so true and helpful to new sewers. I was amazed at the cost difference. I have found the designer fabric so much nicer to work with. Joann’s fabric just feels like sandpaper compared to designer. Such a better quality. I started asking my husband for his opinion on color placement / selections and other things…I absolutely love getting a man’s perspective…it’s totally different than mine. It was a joy to listen to your son describe his logic during the selection process. Thanks so much for a great tutorial. Have a terrific weekend 🤗
Thank you so much! It is interesting the way my son looked at the fabric vs. how I looked at it. I wish he lived closer so we could do more of this kind of stuff. Thank you so much sharing, watching, and your kind words. ❤️
I like the knock-off better. I thoroughly enjoyed your tutorial. Your spirit and energy and personality are delightful. I will definitely be watching more of your tutorials. Your son also added to the fun in finding fabrics. He really does have an artist's eye for color and scale. Thank you for sharing your enthusiastic talent.
Oh wow! Thank YOU so much! You are so sweet! My son is so good at this! I wish he lived closer. He lives in Vermont and I live in Pennsylvania, but when he comes home to visit, he always helps me with this kind of stuff. My other lives close by, but he isn't really into this kind of stuff. He does have other wonderful talents, however! Both great blessings in our lives. ❤️
The navy sashes of the knockoff prints are much more striking. It does a great job of pulling the design together. The turquoise of the jelly roll spreads out the design to the eye.
I think they are both really pretty! You did a great job with fabric color selections! While the savings is awesome, if I am going to put the time and effort into a project I want the fabric to be good quality. Fading, shrinkage, designs not straight, and feel of a fabric might matter in the long run. Keep that in mind as you decide the type of fabric to use. Quilt stores often have a clearance section where good quality fabric can be purchased reasonably. Several online shops have daily deals, too. With a little patience, even as a beginner, you can make a gorgeous quilt with fabric that will last. Just takes a little more planning. Thank you for the tutorials! I love your projects and your enthusiasm ! ❤️🪡🧵
I surprised myself by liking the knock off more. This is a great pattern that I will try. Thank you very much. I have several ajar to choose from, or I can shop my stash too. You son is awesome.
Me too! I was shocked at how much I like the knock off! I really wasn't expecting it! You are so welcome! I hope you give it a try. This would be perfect from your stash, too! My son is amazing. Actually, both of my sons are amazing! I will have to get my other son in a video sometime, but he isn't into this stuff as much. We will see!
What a fun video! Love seeing the same pattern worked up in different colors and values. It's always surprising to see how differen they look! I like your choice of colors (the knockoff) better than the designer fabrics.
Glad you enjoyed it! It was a fun video (and quilt!) to make. I was so surprised at how much I like the knock off version, too! I didn't think I would! Thank you so much!
I used to work at Joann. The first thing they teach you is to measure and cut exactly on the mark, never give ANY extra. We got a lecture on giving away fabric. Unfortunately when fabric is rolled on the bolt it gets distorted and doesn't cut straight. I usually don't shop there for quilting fabric but I do for garment fabric. I have been shorted more than a forth of a yard.
Oh wow! That is so interesting! I couldn't believe it when I started cutting. At first I thought it was me, but then when I measured it all, I realized i was shorted. I will pay closer attention next time! Thank you so much. ❤️
Great video! I love how engaged your son was in helping you choose your fabric at the store… I like both quilts. What I don’t like is that you were shorted fabric which for this project wasn’t much of an issues but when you are making the one yard quilts it definitely is an issue… ask me how I know😂… congratulations on your new website
Kris, this is an amazing idea for a budget friendly quilt and I will be sure to try it out! I made some large quilt squares using fabric from Michael's to throw around the house for my cats to lie on. I am amazed how well they have held up to frequent machine washings. It didn't feel as nice or behave as well as designer fabric, but once washed...it felt the same as the good stuff. Coincidentally, I just made a charity quilt with two Sunday Stroll charm packs and some background fabric..
Thank you! I am amazed at how the $20 quilt I made a few months ago holds up and am excited to see how this one does, too. I am hoping to quilt/finish them next week and give an update after they are both washed. Thanks so much for input! Also, thank you for watching and commenting. ❤️
The planning with your son in the fabric store made the knock off my favorite. The memories of that quilt will always be special. Such a cute pattern too. ❤
That's true! It was a wonderful experience. 🥰
I love the budget quilt!

it’s more cohesive

I have had the same experience. It’s really disheartening to spent $13 yd on fabric and it feel “cheap”.
Sounds like Kaffe Fassett fabrics. They are beautiful, but way too thin with scads of loose threads.

I think you did a great job with your knock off well I really enjoyed it. I also loved the JoAnn shopping trip footage it is fun to watch how other people pick fabric. I would absolutely watch it if you put out more of the shopping trip with your son.
Thank you so much! It was a lot of fun working with my youngest on this project. I love that you loved it, too!
Oh wow! That is so interesting! LOVE Tilde so I get it! LOL! Thank you so much for sharing and for your kind words! You are so sweet! ❤️
Girl-OWN your left-handed ness and cut away 😂. Love both! 😊 😘
Right!! 😎 Thank you! ❤️
That blue spotty fabric looked god in the video clip.
I love love the quilt tops both
Thank you! ❤️
I like both of your quilts!
I actually prefer the budget version, and it was enjoyable and informative to watch your process in the store. Thanks for a really thorough tutorial.
My pleasure! Glad you enjoyed it! We had a lot of fun picking fabric.
I love the knock off quilt so much!
It turned out great, didn't it? I love it, too!
They both are pretty.
Thank you! ❤️
I like the budget colors.
Me too! I am so surprised! Thank you so much for watching! ❤️
Hi Kris, much prefer the knock off! Your on is delightful 💖🇦🇺
Awww! Thank you! You are so sweet! ❤️
What a wonderful project breakdown! I like how your son sees color. Can’t wait to see your blog!
I totally LOVE this Idea!!!! WOW this is EXACTLY what I need to know also
Yay! So glad you like this idea! 🥰
I must say that I prefer the quilt with the fabrics you chose! I do know that the other fabrics are higher quality and feel better! I try to always get my designer fabrics on sale, so it might be worth it to spend a little more and get one you like better.
I agree. I am so surprised at how much I love the JoAnn Fabrics quilt, other than the feel. Thanks so much for watching and sharing! ❤️
The knock off is my favorite!
It's great, isn't it? I am so surprised at how much I love it!
Love to see more of the fabric shopping footage please. And I love Bonnie and Camille fabrics, so that is my favourite x
Let me see what I can do! I have so much footage! LOL! Bonnie and Camille is one of my favorites, too! 🥰
@@SewtheDistance well Kris. You have extremely good taste. Xx
🥰 Thank you! You do, too! 🥰
I prefer the look of the budget friendly version. You made a perfect selection of fabrics. I particularly like the large red floral you chose.
Thank you so much! I am partial to the budget one, too. ❤️
Oh, forgot to add--you did a great job and I love hearing your thought process on quilting. Cannot wait until your website is launched.
I like both quilts and appreciate you sharing your experience using both types of fabric. Thank you for sharing this pattern and tutorial!
You are so welcome! Thank you for your kind words! ❤️🥰❤️
The budget fabrics pop more! Like the budget better. I get the quality issues as well having designer fabrics, so good that we have choices.
Thanks
I like the knock off colors better.😀
I agree! I was pleasantly surprised by this!
Great tips and beautiful quilts! Thank you for sharing! 😊😊
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching!
I like the knock off colors. There are lots of non-designer fabrics that are gorgeous.
So true! I am partial to the knock off colors, too! ❤️
Thanks so much for making this video! You really gave me inspiration to save money. My beloved hobby is getting soooo expensive.
It really is, isn't it? I have more budget-friendly videos coming soon!
Great observation! Thank you so much! ❤️
Great points! Thank you so much! 🥰
I actually love the fewer fabrics in the budget one, but I am a bit of a fabric " snob" and love the feel of the better quality ones!
Same! LOL! I am with you. It is fun to push myself out of my comfort zone, but I tend to always go back to the fancy-pants fabric. ❤️
Love the store colour combo footage 😍
Yay! Thank you! I debated about putting it in. Glad you like it!
Loved the navy in the knock off. Liked the other fabrics in the cheaper quilt also. I do like the feel of quality fabric to work with.
Thank you! I completely agree! ❤️
I love the knock off fabric better! It looks so much brighter and cheerful! Thank you for sharing!
You are so welcome! I agree! ❤️
Love the knock off
Me too! ❤️
I like the knock off better. Thanks for sharing.
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching!
I love your example!! Better than the first one. Thanks. Easy, easy pattern.
Thank you! Me too! The pattern works up so quickly, too! ❤️
I love the knock off
Me too! I am pleasantly surprised at how well it turned out.
Thank you so much! As for the shortage of fabric, I didn't think of that! You are so right!
I enjoy watching you and your on interacting so I vote for more
Thank you! I am thinking about how that video will look. I will be doing something for sure! Stay tuned! ❤️
Hey!
Your awesome!
What a great idea!🧵
Awww! Thank you! So glad you love it!
Fun video! I really like your teaching style.
Thanks so much! 🥰
This is great, thank you! I have a lot of money tied up in jelly rolls that are just waiting for something to do!
Yay! I love when this stuff happens! So happy this will help! ❤️
Actually, I like the knock off better .. the navy really stands out .. good job 👍
Thank you! I think the navy makes it sparkle, too! ❤️
Oh my goodness… I was organizing this weekend and I needed an idea for a jelly roll quilt! Thanks. .
You are so welcome! I love when that happens! So happy it is helpful, Cindy!
I like both quilt tops. Your stitch samples to paper idea is fantastic! ❤️
Thank you! So happy you found it helpful! ❤️
I like the colors in the budget fabrics much better! Thanks for doing this video, it was enlightening and helpful. ❤
Yay! So happy to hear! I am glad you like it! 🥰
