- The 24 Hour of Le Mans remains a car manufacturer’s validation they are the best in the world. In 1966 Ford Motor Company finished 1-2-3 in their Ford GT’s, driven by one of the most successful car manufacturer’s in the world and the fortitude of its leader, Henry Ford II.
But success did not come easily and Ford reached out to their racing partner, Carroll Shelby to conquer the European races. On a cold and drizzly day in December 1964 a banged up and filthy Ford GT sat outside Shelby American on Princeton Avenue in Venice, CA. Shelby had eight weeks to get it ready for Daytona.
It took another year, 1966, for Ford and Shelby American to stage the dramatic 1-2-3 Ford GT 24 Hour of Le Mans finish with the Shelby American Team Ford GT’s in first and second at the checkered flag after a grueling 24 hours. This is the story of some of the Shelby American employees and team crew members who kept the Ford GT’s moving forward at such an astonishing pace.
This video, of the Ken Miles/Denny Hulme Ford GT P/1015, is a tribute to Ken Miles for all of his incredible accomplishments for Shelby American and Ford Motor Company as Ford returns to the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2016.

he was just a good driver. the reason they won is because of their race crew team, the movie did not show them all but the true history did.

New Zealand's Denny Hulme was certainly a very good team-mate for Ken Miles during the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans. Let’s not forget that he was to become F1 world champion the following year.

If you are refering to the information given from the movie, you need to go back and do A LOT of research. Lola engineers did the majority of engineering on the GT40. Eric Broadly was the chief designer. Ford's involvment was financing and powerplant. A little detail the movie glossed over - Shelby wasn't part of the program until after the cars were losing or DNFed in every race. They rsced at the 64 le mans and all the cars dropped out. Shelby was sent the cars after the Nassau race. He put his team in them to fine tune for racing. Even with shelby involved 65 was a losing year. Speaking of Shelby: the history of that man is a little nuanced and hard to find. A lot of people think he retired from racing and started building Cobras - Nope! With his contacts through racing, Shelby became a Goodyear tire distributor. He had a store/shop in california. This is why all Shelby Mustangs came new with Goodyear tires. He had the idea of mating an american v8 in a european sports car, but that was hardly a new idea. There was a former racing associate from the mid-west that was an importer of european cars. He facilitated the whole thing for shelby, even the financial end. He was the one with contacts with AC motor cars. When the first order of AC aces came in, they were converted to covras in his shop by his mechanics. Thingd went soar between he and Shelby and shelby had to take it all on himself. I can send the entire article to you if you would like. Shelby was a complicated man that was probably more a showman than anything. At one point in the 70's in lived in South Africa.....and o kne knows why. But in the end, he built a brand, to be suresure. Slap the name shelby on it and it means performance........or a bowl of chili.
@@mindeloman i know the story from history not from the movie. Lola did make the cars but shelby made them better. Ford did try racing before they got shelby to help but yet again shelby made it better. In my opinion shelby america beat ferrari not ford and not lola.
@@animus13racer i agree with that assessment. Ford provided the means. Shelby provided the know-how. Not too dissimilar from a horse owner - they buy the horse and pay for trainer and jockey to make it a winner. And in the event the horse wins, the owner celebrates as a great victory. I once read a story, one of those le mans years for ford, all the gt40s developed hairline cracks in the windscreen. All the entrents would be disqualified. Ford chartered an entire pan am 707 to fly the replacement windscreens to france. With thst level of commitment and money, just a matter of time before they won......and they won BIG. Something not touched-on in the movie. What ford was doing was risky. Either they go all they way or they end up being a laughing stock in the automotive world and lose market credibility and consumer confidence. If the won, thenreverse wouldnbe true. Ford had to win....there was no way around it.

The original Anglo American team didn’t have time to finesse the car like Shelby did. His cars didn’t finish in 65.

The days of the older cars have a warm place in some many hearts for today we have lots of computers running programs and testing the outcome long before the first cut is made by a CNC machine.
In the old days, it was all hard work by skilled people turning out each engine part, it was skill teams welding the car from raw metal and laying it out on paper using a slide rule and years of hard work,
Kind of like all the craftsman building aircraft in WW2
True stores should always be made into movies for they can show the ups and downs of those willing to work hard with true grit

More than 50 years latter, the question would be, why couldn't car number 2 which was in second place have finished in line with car number 1 (Ken Miles) but one lap down. Ford would have still had their 1 - 2- 3 photo?
Extremely late reply but this is what actually happened. Ken was a lap ahead and the officials didn’t care about the lap and gave mclaren the win

I still don’t get it , if the finish line is crossed by one car first he is the winner. What is in not being discussed here is that it was a 24 hour race, that finished at 4 pm to the second. They had never before or since have 2 cars cross the line together. Both cars were in Shelby’s pit or team. McLaren drove with Miles at Le Mans in 65. Why did the film say he didn’t to build up a drama to sell the film. I believe. If the finish line was the finish McLaren won pure & simple . If it was at 4 o’clock . Denis Jenkinson a British car journalist at the time said that Miles won. The film just brushes over the fact there were 3 cars in the Shelby team & a formidable group of drivers that were.

What Carroll Shelby, Ken Miles and the Shelby America team did for FoMoCo was the automotive industry's equivalent to going to the moon.
Well to be fair, all they really did is use millions and millions of dollars, hire the best drivers of the period, use a much bigger engine, in order to beat a little Italian cottage-industry style company. Respect for Ferrari being that good that Ford had to produce such an effort to beat them.

The Miles/Hulme car is Arcadian blue an oem Ford color for 1966 as found on Mustang, Galaxie, etc. It is different from the Gulf livery which used powder blue and marigold which were Triumph colors.

Hey thanks a little bit of a bummer for Miles,but now we know the truth he win all three....but Carrol said I will put u in a car at Le Mon....nothing about triple crown...it was all in the spirit of promotion that's what lead it to happen,otherwise zero mission they had to do what they had to do,it sucks but that was the mission,rub it in Ferraris face....and three cars side by side would do it...I think Ferrai was already off to F1 in his mind seeing what was coming....I still can't believe they had the last race of a series cancelled,speechless to that one...THANKS..Nikki Lauda was right the scoops on the sides of the original are way nicer than the 05 and the 06....as a racer the tougher ur race car looks the more u want to prove how fast it is,and the better u drive it....THANKS I'd really love to know how much HP the 16....race GT has its sounds unbelievable....

@@brometheusthefirstbro4302 ken miles died AFTER the '66 race, it was a couple of months when he was testing the race car for the next year's Le Mans. He didnt ever won the Le Mans and he did beat ferrari at '66 (finished 2nd) after he lost at '65 (transmission problem)
I've read the 427 in these cars was tuned for around 450 HP for durability and that after the 24 hours they dyno'd them and the made over 465 hP, so you might say broken in nicely
Shelby had a long standing bone to pick with ferrari which had tried to recruit him as a driver several times. Ferrari treated their drivers like replaceable parts and Shelby held them responsible for the deaths of some drivers he knew. For whatever reason then, he decided to finish the 1 & 2 cars on the same lap number. The 1,2,3 (Miles, McLaren, Bucknum) finish was already a lock. Miles would have been up about 4 laps on McLaren. Granted, Miles lost about 3 laps to a brake issue so it's hard to say where exactly lap wise he would have been but they had the 1,2,3 finish regardless. Remember, Le Man is about distance you can cover in a set time period. Shelby opted though to finish the 1 and 2 cars both lap #360 because he saw it as rubbing some extra salt in the wound to ferrari. Absurd. They could have had their photo (and in the actual photo McLaren is clearly ahead of Miles, the two of them likely sped up at the very end.) and Miles could have had the triple crown.
r. decline Carroll Shelby said that ken miles Was about a lap and a half Ahead of McLaren. The thing is if they were worried about something happening they still would’ve won The race because they were first second and third and the odds of all three cars breaking at the end of the race would’ve been slim to none I mean they Could’ve had miles slow down a little bit to save a little wear and tear on the car but he was plainly robbed because of a stupid photo opp

@Clara Engl - Well put! I've made very similar comments about our British friends. Toyotas, Hondas and Mercedes are made in the U.S too, but you don't see us claiming they are American cars! To make matters worse, most British car manufacturers are out of business or sold to foreign manufacturers.

Not true whatsoever.
The final body shape was immensely improved over the original British Lola design and the chassis was completely reworked.
The car bore little resemblance to the prototype vehicles and in the end were entirely American designed and built.

Ken miles is not the winner he disobed direct orders to slow down when Maclaren team slowed down on demand but Ken didn't he then lost because he hadn't completed as many laps he rightfully lost. It's only this film that bends the truth for the sake of selling tickets...

@neo incarnation - As I said to another person blaming Ford for Ken's dilemma, you would do well to research further the real events contributing to the finish line fiasco. The ACO is the one that should shoulder the blame as they weren't totally aware of what their own rules were! At first, they ok'd the 3 cars across the line at once, then after looking more closely (or just looking) at their own rules, they realized this wasn't possible - you can only have one winner. To blame Ford for the ACO's actions is, at the very least, unfair to Ford.

@Bryan - It wasn't Ford's doing that cost Ken the victory, it was the ACO, the governing body who wrote the rules, that prevented Ken from winning. Suggest you read up on it!
