    I have footage of this GT40 during and after the race in 1966, on 8mm film. The film belonged to my father, who was stationed in Munich Germany at the time. He and some friends went to Lemans to witness the new car Ford was running.

    Carroll Shelby certainly recognized the value of having Ken Miles design and tirelessly test all Shelby American products. Besides being a close friend, Shelby held Ken on a well deserved pedestal - He was surely one of the great ones!

    Had a ride in a pale blue series 2 GT40 at Ford UK's test track at Boreham in the '90s, they mostly drift round the track at about 200mph, I remember the noise and sound of the 7-litre V8 behind your head, the smell of the hot oils, the cramped cockpit (the fuel tanks are in the sills and you have to climb over them to get in the seat!). Then they shut the door and you are pinned into the seat because your crash helmet touches the underside of the top of the door and then you get nailed into your seat as the driver floors the pedal and the motor barks into life! what a ride that was!

    Love the story about hammering the wood blocks into the coil springs to raise the car to 4 inches for tech inspection, then the wood would wiggle its way out and it would get back to 3.5 inches...something like that would never fly in today's tech inspections...love these old GT40 stories.

    The Ford GT 40s were amazing winning cars coupled with a dedicated crew and great drivers that became the ones to beat at the 24 hours of Le Mans, no doubt they made history in racing fair and square even while using a pushrod engine that was old technology even back then. Still I've heard some ignorant fool make criticisms about the winning legacy of the Ford GT 40s, but the fact that counts always is that the winners are those who crossed the finish line first, period. Thanks for the video showing those who helped make all possible then.

    • @buckhorncortez
      @buckhorncortez 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      NOT at LeMans. It is the car that is driven the greatest distance in the 24 hours. Because all three cars finished at the same time, it was determined that the car driven by the team of Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon started further back in the starting grid and, therefore, traveled a greater distance (8 meters or 60 feet) - which is why they were declared the winners of LeMans in 1966. If Miles was not told to slow down, he would have driven at least two laps further than McLaren and Amon and would have won the race because he had driven the greater distance.

    • @Tom_Hadler
      @Tom_Hadler 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@buckhorncortez Doesn't that completely negate being on pole position? They must have made that rule up or actually misinterpreted or taken too literally their own rules from 1923, probably was a throw away line "greatest distance"....so there is no pole, nor start line.

    The good news is that now the real story is out there, a British driver and engineer Ken Miles won the 1966 Le Mans driving a British Lola car developed to racing condition by him, and ordered by the Ford executives to slow down to allow a photo finish. I am so glad Le Mans '66 is at the cinema now

    • @MrNoneofthisisreal
      @MrNoneofthisisreal ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Uh. No Dave, that's not what happened. The Brits had years to get it together and failed. Ford took the program back. Gave it to Shelby American and had instant success. Well, after months of thrashing and re-engineering the 'Lola'. Remington and his guys substantially changed the car. It was already long changed from Eric Broadley's original; design when they got it.
      Miles was a great development driver and the suits effed him. I'll give you that. Read a little more on the subject. There is certainly a vast body of knowledge out there.
      The British were miles behind America in fabrication technology and engine design. Carrol Smith had to completely replumb the cars. replace almost all the bits. They were brazing parts together! A technique from the 19t century.
      And on and on.
      Love R

    Does anybody here remember the Can Am series, who dominated that for at least 4 years. Bruce was a potential world champion F1 driver, not some some 2nd rate stand in . Bruce & Denny Hulme were teammates until Bruce was killed. Denny hardly gets a mention here even though he drove half the race. This is motor racing, not a kindergarten. I saw Bruce drive at least ten times,he was fearless & bloody quick. Kar Kraft developed the Mk11 with input from the 3 teams. Yes Shelby made a huge difference but so did the other 2 teams.

    I just looked at the headline A Shelby car did win the race . He crossed the line first, in every motor race I have been to that makes him a winner . I am talking about the No 2 car driven by Bruce McLaren. My god this film gave Miles, Dan Gurney’s lap record set in the morning. His car was in front when it blew up its engine. Factually this film is just riddled with errors to make the film a mates film . Small things like Miles driving the 65 race with Bruce McLaren sharing the car. It was one the most disappointing motor racing films I have seen since the old stock car racing films.

Everything I’ve seen on TH-cam recently emphasises that Ken did the development work, he did a lot but so did Bruce McLaren and other drivers as well. At the end of the day the 66 race was won by a pair of Kiwis in an Anglo American race car.

    I wish that these older men who were apart of this race would've reflected on this race within a year instead of fifty years or so after it was done. Some details get left out after so much time has passed... I'm so glad and proud that after the 2016 winning of the Lemans race that they soon reflected on what took place during that race fifty years after winning the first one. To many details get left out and when they decide to reflect on anything, it's usually because of a movie and a lot of facts get misconstrued because of how much time has passed and because Hollywood always takes the facts for granted every time. I took an interest in this history several years before this ever became a movie. Makes me laugh of how so many people say; who's here after Ford vs Ferrari? That's so damn cheezy...!!! Give me a break...!!!

    I been lucky enough able to use a SIMULATOR and one of the cars I have been waiting for to be loaded in to the test program is the new GT car based on its sheer looks and the performance of this ole car and its reputation....the new car is just an unbelieveable piece of work and I am impressed that after the program that created the 66 67 69 GT.....that the new 17 car could be so striking looking of a race car,just really make a racer one to drive it hats off to ford and its guys for getting that built....and if the original didn t have looks that kill,the new car is even more so and that's coming from me and all I ever asked for in a race car was a prototype,and the 2017 GT is more beautiful than LMP1 cars and I have always wanted a P1 car....but its nicer when a race car still resemble a car a little bit more to real enthuisist....meaning if I built my prototype for a unique unseen street car I mite be driving my 2017 Ford GT more often....but it would have to be red white and blue paint scheme,not one color for the street....and not black....any color u want as long as it black right....jk

    The "Ford built, Ford manufactured" comment near the end of this video is slightly disingenuous to all of the other people involved in making the GT40 the race winner it became - the likes of Lola, Shelby, JWA (and even folk like Abbey Panels) who had so much to do with the program. Great to see these guys reminiscing nonetheless.

      you have NO , repeat, absolutely NO clue whatsoever of what your are talking about, originally in 1964, Ford contracted ERic Broadly and John Weyer to help with the program......the ONLY lola involvement was the use of a couple of Lolas as test mules......the ORIGINAL GT40 was designed (by Dr ROy Lunn of Ford) as a Clay Mock Up in Dearborn, its suspension designed on fords computers, the program managers were Don Frey and Roy Lunn, Eric Broadly quit way before his 2 year contract was up.......the program was a complete disaster......EVERY RACE, EVERY car entered was a DNF......at the end of the 1964 Season, Henry Ford II turned the program over to Carroll Shelby......Shelby Engineer Phil Remington redesigned the car getting rid of near every component Broadly and Weyer had recommended.....the Boranni Wire wheels GONE, the Colotti transmission replaced by a Ford Galaxie transmission, the small 289 engine replaced by the 427......the nose had to be made larger to accomodate the spare tire, the ducting completely redesigned.......the ONLY thing the MK II might have shared with a Lola were some nuts and bolts......EVERY FORD GT was a REAL FORD and the MK II was 100% Ford DEsigned and Ford components..........your post show ignorance.

      @@mtl-ss1538 Buddy there,s loads of misconceptions about the gt40 program mainly due to ford not shelby.
      In 1964 None of them finished the race using the 4.2L engine and in 1965 there were 6 different teams racing for ford some of them were 4.2l gt40's and the shelby one's were 7.0l gt 40's, none of them finished the race that year either including the shelby ones,
      Ford makes out it was the british designers who was responsible for its early failures mainly a guy called John Wyer, but he was only supposed build the rolling chassis etc etc and the body, and ford of america and Shelby were responsible for making them into race cars and fit the engines etc etc, shelby was always part of the gt40 program even from the start, he was the one who introduced ford to lola cars and John Wyer, he didnt build a car in 1964 because he was still racing his coupe, but he was still involved with the gt40 program in 1964 as well, but he did build one in 1965 which did not finish the race, the problem with the early cars were all down to ford they were all mechanical problems they didn't temper the cylinder bolts or head bolts and they all broke on some of the cars, and they had clutch problems and gearbox problems, ford were responsible for the engines and gearboxes etc etc
      Buddy watch the video link i have provided in my previous comment, Shelby tells the whole story, and its a bit different to the ford one most people know

    I find it hard to listen to people complain that this was a Lola not a Ford built race car...they took the Lola to Le Mans in 1964 the way it was built untouched and both cars were crashed badly and destroyed so then Ford redesigned the whole car and it looks nothing like the original Lola not eve close...so they reinvented the whole car Ford and Shelby so they can say they did it because they made the changes and made it work properly...Californians and Ford I believe even suspension arms broke on the 64 or 65 cars untested yet...I believe that's when Shelby and Ford took the ball...

      @subconscious.com_usa6691 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The gt40's that failed in 1964 and 1965 were all due to mechanical problems, mainly dodgy cylinder bolts, and clutch and gearbox problems plus 1 fire and 1 accident, even the shelby's built cars in 1965 failed to finish, ford were responsible for the engines and gearboxes it was their fault they built the engines and gearboxes ,it had nothing to do with the chassis of the cars, but for some reason people blame the british designers and engineers even thou they only built the chassis.
      Shelby was actually in charge of the racing side of things he didnt design nothing, Eric Broadley designed the original car for ford and Roy Lunn designed the mechanical engineering of all the cars including the designs for the mk4 and clay models plus the mechanical engineering designs of the mk4, shelby's team built them and tested them a long with john wyers team.
      Generally Shelby and john wyer gets the credit for those wins because they were the builders and race managers
      But Eric Broadley and roy lunn are the unsung hero's,along with their team of engineers without them there wouldn't be a car to race,
      If you watch this video interview by shelby from 1:00:53 in the time line of the video link i have provided he tell the real story, and its quite a different story to the one most people know and is nothing like the film th-cam.com/video/Rzq4DeTjZ1A/w-d-xo.html

      The Lola and the GT40 do have a resemblance. It is very surprising that they do but maybe the Lola designer, Eric Broadley, set some basic parameters that survived the subsequent redesigns. It is worth remembering, or being aware, that there no fools involved in this story and the flood of wins that eventually came was the result of the combined input of many clever motorsport people from many nations. It would not have happened without Ford money and Henry Ford's power, but crazy Henry could have done nothing without the small workshop geniuses.
