What to do after getting your cast removed

  • If you’ve ever been injured to the point where you needed a cast, and now your cast has been removed, you’ve probably noticed a few things..You may have noticed you feel stiffness in your ankle, weakness, limping, and one calf being smaller than the other
Yes your leg is healed, but the soft tissue, ligaments and joints are still weak. So we need to strengthen it.
So how do we fix this?
Well we start a training program where we’re constantly putting weight on the leg to get it used to moving and holding it’s share of the load again. This includes running, walking, strength training.
What this does is helps your body create more bone making material called “Osteoblasts” which help in creating stronger bones.
As much as we want to strengthen the bones, the joints play a crucial part in your recovery as well so an exercise you can do for your ankle is:
1️⃣Ankle Cars: Sit on the floor, hug your thigh, and move your foot back wards, to the left, down (away from you), and to the right, then moving all the way around in a seamless motion.
Next in the calf, we found that one calf will be smaller than the other one after removing your cast, so let’s equal it out. we do that by doing:.
2️⃣Calf Raises: Start by standing shoulder width apart, and going from your tippy toes (holding for 5 seconds) then slowly descending to get your heals to the ground. Repeat for as many reps as needed. Feel free to add weight to increase the resistance.
Lastly, one thing that happens after taking your cast off is that yes you’re healed, but chances are because you have been favouring a side, you’ve triggered muscle imbalances.
We can work on creating a balance by doing exercises something called “proprioception exercises” on a Bosu Ball like: .
3️⃣Bosu Squats: Start by standing on a Bosu. Once stabilized work yourself into a squat position and hold. The Bosu is not only challenging your leg stabilizer muscles, but challenging the ankle to also control and stabilize itself. Which will help give it mobility and strength.
If this has helped at all, leave a comment and like down below and thank you for watching!

I hope and will pray for every person in this comment section who is going through pain suffering and anxiety…you guys will make it dont loose confidence just rest ample and let it heal dont make movements while you have a cast on …do finger swings to regulate blood flow and if swelling try to keep your feet elevated above heart level and lastly i wholeheartedly hope you all get better asap

To everyone who is discouraged - a had a MT fracture and was in cast for 3,5 months, cause it didnt want to consolidate( Now i'm off and at first I couldn'r even walk, my ankle was soooo stiff. I felt panic, I felt like i'd never walk again. I couldn't even put my weight on a leg cause ankle stiffness wouldn't let me. And today, on 5th day of training i suddenly can make small ugly step without crutches! It's ok to be stiff after cast, especially a long one.

I have some anxieties myself.... I had a tibia fibia two inch smashed zone about three inches from the ankle with no ankle injury..... Confined in casts for about two and a half months and I have pain and the same kind of axiety you seem to be expressing...

Wow. I had multiple nondisplaced toe fractures and for 3 months was in a cast (from foot to below knee with stirrup). I had it removed 4 days ago and still cannot walk because my foot is stuck in the lateral and flexed position (the way it was in the cast) and all my lower leg & foot muscles plus soft tissues are painful especially the Achilles tendon and heel. 😢
Ortho doc told me to just start walking like he has no clue the problems a cast causes.
The cast had also squashed my toes together that they are now too close and one toe feels sprained. I hope I regain flexibility in my foot because I need that to walk and balance. I am scared I will never walk and resume weight lifting and exercising.

I ain't there yet.... I have a great deal of pain in my ankle..... I had a crushed tibia and fibula in the distal third that didn't effect the ankle directly.... Othopedist eventually put it in a tension cast that I had on for two weeks, then I got a below the knee cast. When it was time for that cast to come off, I took it off myself. The bone hadn't complealty healed but it was good shape set.... It had been over two months in total...
    Ouch!

I knew it was going to heal. I can walk without a boot but sometimes I do wear it as it sometimes gets swollen if I’m working a lot but other than that it’s healing up good, doesn’t really hurt unless I step funny, but I usually walk without my boot I got the boot used of eBay in case anyone wants to do what I did, if you go to the doctor that same boot will run you for over 400$ + the doctor visit, I payed 40$. I did go for X-rays tho & it’s properly healing up if your ankle gets swollen sometimes that’s normal it won’t fully heal for 1 year or more depending on your genetics ig

I know is a process, I haven't even started with the therapies yet. That area is normally stiff, and might feel discomfort, after the cast is removed. There's some flexing moves that I learned in youtube channel, it could be helpful is a little bit boring, I started doing that this week very carefully, now my ankle have more flexibility. @@urrywest its been about 2 months since ive had my cast off now and my leg still swells and sometimes it does ache, i only recently stopped limping and still limp if i over use it or have to walk at a fast pace. But dont worry it can take up to a year to completley heal, the best advice i can give is to use the leg as much as possible, without hurting your self.

@@liakiwirose even though my injury was with my leg, my ankle was extremely stiff since i hadnt moved it for so long, but within about a month, range of motion increased alot, just keep on doing the exercises and it should all clear up, dont expect it to be instant because 3 days is not alot at all, i was worried my self but within a months time, (if you are using it enough) you shouldnt even think about it when walking.

Some of these exercises are too extreme after 6 weeks and would like cause more stress on the ankle. Just do normal home strengthening exercises.

I think that too. I am more than one month after cast removal and still cannot stand on tiptoes on both feet without pain in the mid to forefoot.
