Ankle Injury Update! Getting My Splint Off and Taking My First Steps!

  • Such an exciting day! The splint/ cast has been taken off, I met my physical therapist who was incredibly knowledgeable, kind and put me at ease, AND... I took my first steps post surgery!!! I was only allowed to put 20lbs on my foot, which isn’t much, so most of the work is done with a walker or crutches at this point, but being able to take steps at all is big progress.

      Me too. I had a trimalleolar break, fibula and tibula. I am almost 8 weeks post op and am now trying to full weight bear. It hurts as my tendons are so tight. Progress is happening but it's slow. I guess we all just have to persevere.

    Be VERY careful watching this video. VERY careful. All ankle injuries are different but it is NOT normal to have stitches removed and be walking on that ankle 30 minutes later. I have a broken ankle as I type this. I had surgery and stitches removed 2 weeks after that surgery. THEN I had to sit at home for another month of non weight bearing. It sometimes happens that healing is so fast that you will get permission to start weight bearing earlier but it's pretty common to be non-weight bearing for 6 weeks after surgery. I'm currently approved to start weight bearing 8 weeks after my accident and 6 weeks after surgery and it is going slow. I am now using one crutch rather than two. Losing both crutches and getting out of the walking boot is expected to take a month.
    The very quick recovery time shown in this video is not what the normal ankle injury looks like and it's not normal to have stitches removed and be walking on that ankle immediately after.

    • @lynnaltehmazi6961
      @lynnaltehmazi6961 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am the same I had ankle surgery 5 weeks ago and had my stitches removed 2 weeks after then waited for a further 3 weeks to have an X-ray and be allowed to put only partial weight on my foot. Start my physiotherapy on Sunday wish me luck 🙏🏽

    • @Jwilpet8
      @Jwilpet8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      She wasn’t putting full weight on it though, she was still using the walker for assistance. I have my post op appointment today (hence why I’m watching this video lol) and they told me that I should be able to walk on it two weeks after the surgery, which would be today after getting the splint and stitches removed. Hopefully all goes well and that plan remains 🤞🏼 so while I agree with you that no two ankle injuries are exactly the same, I wouldn’t say that it’s not normal to walk on it after having the splint and stitches removed because that’s what my doctor told me to expect. If it wasn’t normal, they wouldn’t say that and her doctor wouldn’t have allowed her to do it. Obviously she was healed enough to do it if they gave her the ok. Bottom line: always listen to your doctor’s advice about your specific injury.

      @jenniferrhoades4877 until after christmas!? I had mine done Nov 3rd and stitches removed at week 3. I have x-rays tomorrow and Wednesday we shall see if it's healed to put half my weight in an air boot. By Christmas time full weight in an air boot hopefully.

      @jenniferrhoades4877 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Nasty_J so I had staples 28 of them. lol I thought it was stitches. I'm out of everything because my cast was cutting me. I do have a boot for when I'm mobile. I go next Monday . My surgery was the 7th of November. I'm not sure if I will be ready at 6 weeks to be honest. Unless it changes here in a week . Week 6th with my surgery is only 25% weight baring in the boot and crutches, then each week it goes up basically. I wish you good luck! This is so hard.
