Well, I just broke my ankle on May 15, 2023. Had surgery to put plate and screws in my fibula on May 17 (I live in Canada, so no worries about cost). I'm very fortunate to have my husband doing everything to help me. I find it incredibly frustrating not being able to do anything but sit around--especially at the beginning of gardening season. On June 6 I go to get this big heavy cast removed and replaced with a lighter cast. I wish I could say I was doing something really sporty or fun when I broke my ankle, but I wasn't. I was just walking. Welcome to your 50's!

Marisa, we really hope that you feel better and thanks for watching our video! We're sorry to hear about your broken ankle and frustration of not being able to do anything around home and garden. We really hope you feel better soon! Just remember to point out exactly what should be done and how it should be done to your husband. Instruct your husband each morning after breakfast and coffee so that each day tusks are completed well and on time. I am sure that with your managerial skills and timely delegation of all activities to your husband you will be able to maintain your house and garden in top shape ready for time you start walking again.
If possible, we would appreciate a quick review from you; these make a BIG difference to us!

Thank you SO MUCH for this information! My surgeon sent me home with a short boot after my cast. I was in terrible pain and of course it was the weekend. X ray showed I was fine...but OH the pain! When it came time for the boot again, I requested a tall boot like you suggest here. What a difference it made! I was able to tolerate the boot and added a second thicker sock and an insole as suggested here again to increase comfort. It amazed me that my Dr. did not use any of these suggestions in his protocol. They made ALL the difference!!! THANK YOU!

    • @DA-jw4lx

@@Disk-Etiquette Oh my gosh, that was over 4 years ago, I don't remember. But if possible, I try to take either organic supplements or supplements of high quality. The other thing that works also is if you make turmeric milk. You don't necessarily have to use milk, you can use water because by boiling it for 20 minutes it naturally thickens up. As a matter of fact, I don't use milk when I make mine because there are times milk causes me inflammation. Make sure you grind some black pepper in it if you are going to make some, this way your body will absorb the turmeric. I wish you all the best!

    • @glennvannijevelt1133

Fab advise. Took One full teaspoon of high quality Turmeric + 1/4 teaspoon Black Pepper + honey with a cup of Unsweetened Yoghurt - Every Morning or before Lunch.
Avoid gaining weight by skipping bread and pasta and do 8-16 Intermittent Fasting if possible.
The last thing that the ankle need is excess weight during recovery time. Eat lots of protein (Fatty fish is the best) + vegetable + Fresh fruits + Almond & Pistachios.
If you are diabetic or has a diabetic family member, make sure it gets monitored and medicated properly.

Hi there. I have a hairline fracture, exterior of my left ankle, happened on June 22. I have a tall boot and here's my issue. I just turned 70, and last September had a full right knee replacement. I was doing super well until the ankle roll/fracture. Wearing the boot has been a disaster for my new knee and the rest of my body, mostly because of the ridiculous difference in leg length when wearing the boot. So on my right foot I soon started wearing a thick-soled, substantial runner with a good thick insole, which has made a huge difference, obviously, but damage has already been done and my new knee has been set back I think several months. So I've chosen to go the rest route 90% of my time and can only hope my knee will recover down the road. I brought this up because it wasn't mentioned specifically in your video and could be of help to others. Thanks for your video, lots of useful info.

This was a great video!! I just fractured my ankle in about 5-6 areas so already had a couple initial appointments, x-rays, and a CT scan. I’m meeting the ortho Doctor on Tuesday to schedule surgery. My very first broken bone at 59 years old I was coming down a slide at a playground holding my small dog stupid mistake so I tried to stop myself with my foot on the rubberized decking. Oddly, I set up my cell phone to film it so I could send it to my son it’s his dog. I’m in great shape but I realize I’m gonna have to watch what I eat an intermittent fasting so I don’t gain weight being so sedentary. I only weigh 155lbs and I usually walk for cardio. Again, this video was super helpful and you explained everything very well. You seem like a very nice person as well. Thank you so much.

3 weeks post op, bimalleolar fracture. Plate & screws. BMX bike finally got the best of me. Looking forward to a strong recovery, and getting back in the saddle! I have been very fortunate with pain. Stopped pain meds 2 days after surgery, and pain has been very minimal. Shower chair has been very helpful, and a good cover for the cast was essential, also a pillow dedicated for the ankle fracture has been very important!!(amazon) Grabbed a scooter & wheelchair off marketplace with my crutches it has been great to have options to be mobile. Worst part is the mental game, it’s been very hard being stuck home for a month with another 10 weeks + to go.

Thank you for the tips! I’m a nurse and work with post surgical patients. I never realized how tough these injuries could be. That is until now. Two weeks ago I had a golf cart accident. I broke my left lateral malleolus/fibula , 5th metatarsal, and my talus. Screws were placed in the malleolus/fibula and the metatarsal. The talus is being left to heal on its own. Your video is a reminder that I can not rush this process and there are products to aid in the recovery. Thank you!!

Did both ankles racing motorcross external reduction internal fixation is killer for the first couple weeks. Took no pain killers or anti inflammatory. My tip personally is get a band and work your quads your bone will heal faster then your muscle atrophy. So even if you can handle weight bearing at some point your muscles won’t help you they will hurt you more

Rolled my ankle last Saturday. Definitely fractured. Won't be able to see the Orthopedic doctor until next week so not sure how severe it's broken. The sucky part is it's the good leg. Back 5 years ago I snapped my other leg in half at the knee, also suffering tibia/fibula fracture requiring plates and screws on each side of my leg. Due to RA I haven't gotten full strength back in the leg and I'm starting to doubt I ever will, so I'm having an extremely difficult time trying to use crutches so I'm having to use a wheelchair most of the time this past week. Word of advice- Be careful with long-term corticosteroid use. We believe it could have played a huge roll in me now suffering from osteoporosis.

I fell forward and panicked because I could feel my bone bending so quickly turned my leg around as I hit the floor. My x rays identified oblique fracture of the fibula at the level of the syndesmosis and the lateral displacement of the talus bone. I had ORIF the two days later .

This video is very helpful! I broke my tibia and fibula in the beginning of July. Got surgery and have a plate, rods, and screws, so much fun lol anyway I'm just about 8 weeks out from surgery and now full weight bearing in the walking boot. I have been putting as much weight as I'm comfortable with in the boot, but I'm just not there yet. I have been doing exercises, still icing/elevating. I have some residual nerve damage for sure, feels tingly in certain areas and can't bend my toes down, I perform the motion, but it just doesn't happen. I also feel a lot of my pain and tightness in the front of my ankle when I sit and put my feet flat on the floor. I try to roll the chair forward to feel out my range of motion, but it hurts and I definitely can't extend my knee over my heel while it remains on the floor. Is this normal? Will PT help this? Im starting this Friday and I'm quite nervous and don't want to do any damage if something isn't healing properly....any advice or info for peace of mind would be super helpful and appreciated!

Feb. 23 I slipped on some black ice and hit the trifecta of ankle fractures - trimalleolar fracture. A week later I had surgery and got a plate and nine screws. The last few months has been interesting to say the least. Healing has been slow - 44 days in a wheelchair non-weight bearing. Then a walking cast for a few weeks then PT started. Two sessions in at PT I got covid. Just started back to PT this week. My ankle still swells terribly and is extremely sore to touch. My therapist said I may never have full function of the ankle again. I'm determined to make the best of it and get back to walking 5K races. At 67 I don't heal like I did when I was young.

Thank God for great surgeons! I broke BOTH ankles 9 weeks ago. One required extensive surgery (trimalleolar) with 2 plates, 13 screws, and a tightrope system. 6 weeks after surgery, I was walking on both feet! Now 3 weeks later, I’m still doing physical therapy and strengthening but I’m driving, going up and down stairs on my feet instead of butt, etc. These tips are great!!

@@fredrickkago9265 yes! It’s been 7 months now and I’m about 90% back to normal, I’d say. Still having some intermittent pain where one plate is and I don’t have full range of motion back yet on the surgery ankle but doc said it could take 1-2 years for that. The full motion I’m lacking is like if you sit on the floor and reach for your toes, pulling them back (dorsiflexion). He said it’s the hardest one to get back. You really have to work at it. I HIGHLY recommend physical therapy as soon as you’re able to put weight on the surgery ankle.

      @@christinas4 Yeah hi.
I'm 3 months from my break and i've healed really well too.
I was full weightbearing after 6 weeks like you, and i'm back to walking around and stuff.
Still gets very sore the next day after i walk about, but i can feel myself getting stronger and stronger.
I also have the dorsiflexion problem. I do loads of stretching which definitely helps, i'd recommend calf and achillies tendon stretches they help a lot.
I'm mainly trying to regain the ability to squat down properly. It's very awkward when you have poor dorsiflexion range of motion.
But obviously things are going really well. I'd say i'm about 50-60% back, as i cant walk long distances or run or jump properly yet.

Watching this in April 2022, because I’m in a cast from breaking my ankle in three places. Tons of pain and surgery and half the hardware store later I’m on the mend. The pain after surgery was killer and definitely the worse than the actual break. Lot’s of great ideas in this video, a lot of them I do already. I’d like to add that the regrowth process is painful as well. My nerves fire and aching tends to happen in the evening, falling to sleep is difficult some nights. I’ve had to take a half of a scripted pill just to get to relax at times.

These are excellent tips! Somehow I think it's good we don't realise JUST how long a broken ankle takes to recover at the start because it's a long slog! I am past the cast now, I had 6 weeks of bedrest due to lots of shattered pieces. The boot is a nightmare for me, very uncomfortable but the drs say I have to do 8 weeks. This is a really tough fracture to recover from.

I’m 70 and I broke my ankle in 3 places on February 1, 2021 during those blizzards and then the polar vortex cold spell that lasted over a month, in Rockford Illinois, trying to dig my car out that was stuck in ice. had to have surgery, had a lot of screws put in and so on. Loved the video. Loved everything about the video. About what you should eat and which vitamins help. Since I’m over weight, I don’t eat properly. Loved the part about the boot and how detailed you were about it and how high it should be and putting the air in it. I don’t have that kind of boot, wish I did maybe because I’m on Medicare and Medicaid? Anyway love the part about getting someone to help, you don’t realize how much work it takes just to get a bottle of tea. And about having everything near you. And about the chair in the tub for the shower. Loved the part about getting a handicap pass for car, never thought of that. Loved the part about the rolling stick and ball. Going to go on Amazon and look for one. My son lives with me and works freelance from home so he does everything for me, laundry, cooking, dishes, shopping, taking care of my cats, running to Walgreens for my medicine, because I’m also diabetic. I also spent a month in a rehab facility. But I still have a lot of swelling and fluid and a ton of needle and pin pains shooting into my foot. I do ice and elevate and see my doctor every two weeks am still doing exercises they taught me there. I’m still having trouble getting down the 6 stairs into and out of my house because I just started 50% weight bearing. And when I scoot down the steps I can’t get back in my wheelchair. Any suggestions? Please need help.

I broke my ankle simply walking across the parking lot. Some how my foot twisted causing me to fall. I was wearing flat shoes...crazy huh. Broke my ankle in three places. The first two weeks after surgery were terrible. I have a total of 12 screws, stitches and staples. Because of the swelling, my cast rubbed against the staples, it was terrible. But the worst was getting the staples removed...I screamed bloody murder. I'm approaching week four, doing a lot better, but still have a long road ahead of me. Fortunately I'm retired and don't have to worry about getting back to work. My family have been absolutely fantastic in assisting me, I'm so thankful I have them.
