Hey Fextra, thanks for the video. One thing that I think you got wrong is the thing about there being no cover system. I’m pretty sure that you can peep and shoot over cover and around corners in first person. It’s like Far Cry. I consider that a cover system, and I like it better than games like Mass Effect and Gears.
I have 136 hours on starfield. I played on console shortly after launch and put the game down because life took away time from gaming. I just picked it up again recently on pc and have been loving it. The rev8 fixes almost all the issues of plopping down on a random planet and having to run for ages to get anywhere, while also being really cheap and fun to drive. In my opinion it fixed all the issues I have with planetary exploration. I still haven’t finished the main story and instead opted for trying all aspects of the game. Outposts, crafting, trade, contraband, combat, companions, you name it I’ve done it and I’ve enjoyed pretty much all of it. Throughout the game the story in the main and faction quests threw me for some “no way” and “holy crap” moments which I feel like are sometimes hard to come by in games nowadays. There are moments where you are left with hard decisions which really make you wonder about what could have been if you went the other way. The stories are something special. What’s even better is that there is dlc coming that will further the compelling stories. Given what I’ve already seen so far, I am convinced shattered space will be exceptional as well. I found the combat to be fun with unique weapons and interesting abilities and mechanics. I definitely wouldn’t say it was something I wanted to get over with. The graphics on console are good for the performance of those systems, but stepping up to pc things take a gigantic leap. The game looks absolutely stunning I really have no clue how anyone could say the graphics in this game are bad. I really don’t understand the poor ratings of this game. To me they come off as short sighted with criticisms that don’t have anything to do with the core game itself, such as the loading screens. Everyone I talk to who wrote off starfield either didn’t play it at all or didn’t put enough time into it to see how multifaceted it was or experience any of the great stories to their fullest. That’s not to say starfield doesn’t have problems because it certainly does. It’s just that those problems don’t take away from all the great things this game offers.

One of the few reviews, that does this game justice. Sometimes I don't understand the internet and it's infatuation with hate trains. I literally played 13 hours in one sitting - this game is goddamn good and mods will only make it better.
People love to hate on Bethesda, it gives them comfort for some reason. 16x times the detail and it just works are the funniest jokes known to mankind, apparently, even though calling them overused would be an understatement. I love how ppl who played no more than 5 hours of the game, or those who didn't even play the game at all and are judging the quality of the title solely from looking at gameplay footage are trashing it right off the bat. People are saying Todd Howard has lied yet again about Starfield even though Todd never promised any of the things that aren't in the game. That may sound like being a fanboy, but it's a fact; a fact that ppl will not want to admit.
@jimmythegamer2231 to be fair, the bathesda jokes are pretty funny, todd quotes are so memorable, but people are playing the game despite the hate so who's laughing now?
Yup unlike ign those people fully pony fan boy just imagine if this game releases only on Playstation they gonna give it 10 but since it xbox exclusive they hate it that's why I don't like ign review those guys don't even Play full game , I cant wait to play it 😊😊
I think it really depends on what you're expecting. I was ready for an open world bethesda RPG adventure. I got it and more, I'm def satisfied and I'll keep playing.
Totally agreed: I've read several reviews myself and I can't figure out how this game could even reach a 9 😂 Basically what I've read is: - no survival mode so no complex mechanic and even no basic... why you should build your house here and there or even bothering having a bed if there is no real need to have it or just why having a bed if the game doesn't ask you to sleep? - No free exploration in space: maybe this was expected but for sure not cool for people playing space games in 2023. Click on planets and you're teleported in the orbit: game choice close to the one made by the wonderful mass effect too but it was 2006 and ME never defined itself as free roaming and was designed to be quests driven only. Beth's rpgs are free roaming by definition and SF was declared too as the like. Letting a modern player of no man sky and elite dangerous teleport to an orbit in 2023 just to explore orbit is underwhelming at minimum. Definitely not free roaming in space. Furthermore why investing time customizing your ship if it's just a matter of teleporting here and there? A review says: I'd like to have a reason to upgrade my ship but this game doesn't give one. If it's true to me is another not 9.4 feature. - Repetitive and dull quests that you may like indeed but never love. Do not know if it's true but again it doesn't seem a comment for a 9.4 game. I must say guys: when you play Horizon Zero Dawn a totally different game for sure yeah but you literally may fall in love even with secondary quests chains... you have the feel to really help those poeple. From what I've read it seems SF never gives something like that or even the chills. - The worst thing I've read is that the game world has small or zero impacts depending on your actions and choice. That's not new: it happened on old Beth's rpgs too but now we are in 2023 and modders for free are doing that: I'm playing the mod Sim Settlements 2 for Fallout4 and you can literally see the game world evolving depending on your actions. I would've expected that in a AAA 2023 game or at least giving some illusion of that... and btw even if it was 2006 the ME world indeed evolves with you. - ...then we have vehicles: in 2330 we reached space and we don't even have a rover to move on planets? Rovers was there since moon exploration in 1969 if I'm not wrong. So not saying the game is bad: just reporting what I've read and the reasons for which I can't understand a 9.4. Maybe all those guys with 70-75 are wrong I do not know: for sure to me just lacking the survival mode ignoring the success stories on new vegas, fallout 4 and skyrim - thanks community - it's an incredible flaw, definitely a bad choice limiting a lot of any generic game mechanics and for sure I'm not playing the game till at least that mode is there. The good news is that I'm a fan of Beth's games so if this game really is a 9.4 I'll be happy because we'll see it in some months at the GOTY awards... but to be honest I believe more in patches and communities 😁 as of now as fan of space games and fan of Beth's games... well I'll continue to play Sim Settlements 2 😂
great review subbed and pressed the bell hello from Scotland :) i love the game i went into the bank to see if i could open an account and became a debt collector lol
Exploration isn't just going around planets and finding wildlife. Exploration is finding secret stories by reading notes and journals, small hidden quests or activities, realizing how events in the galaxy are connected or referencing each other etc. To explore the universe is both to visit new planets and check out whats there, and to discover the lore behind the many factions, etc
Today I tried this game , even on low to medium settings I enjoyed it . At least no lags and stunning graphics with fresh thoughts . I am not gonna criticise without a strong reason and also this game is different , so just forget about the fps or optimisation . Edit : btw you can't judge this game by just watching a video instead you need to try by yourself .
Time and time again I can come to this channel for extremely reliable reviews. Thank you for the extreme dedication for clean, clear cut reviews with minimal bias (and when there is it's stated) that not only make me feel validated for my many purchases, but the extra hype to play them.
I don't understand how you came to the conclusion the game has good performance. It's been widely publicized now that the game does not run well at all on pcs.
When you put this game right up there with ME that's when it peeked my interest. Thankfully I have gamepass so I will not loose money if I dislike the game
Feeling a bit like that 9.4 rating is very high considering the amount of negatives you mentioned that were pretty critical, especially saying combat is lacking, I think you even said it was dull and left you wanting it to be over... that’s not good at all. Kinda thinking the pressure of the hype and giving it a higher rating so not to piss off the Bethesda diehard fans that have been waiting 10 years for it has come into effect here for me, just my interpretation of your review. As always a great and honest review... just the score I’m questioning that’s all.
Yeah, I have a feeling Bethesda has that big developer privilege despite its numerous flaws, it still gets a high score by certain reviewers. If it was made by an unknown dev, the final score will get docked.
I understand how you may think that but I never shy from harsh scores when they are warranted. The last Bethesda game I covered was redfall and it got a 5.9. In this case, I personally didn't love the combat, but I did love the exploration and questing. Because the game provides so much of it, it became not just what I focused on but what I did with my hours, and it was incredibly fun. For this reason, the score can't be low: I had fun! -- but I did mention what I did not like so that people that are looking for the combat can be warned that my score is affected by my predilection for questing.
I feel the same. Telling me the combat is a chore to get through and showing me those typical Bethesda bugs. I'm sure the game will get better in some ways but combat is a core aspect
Me: There is no way you can make space piloting and combat boring. Bethesda: We put stealth in space and its actually just you going really slow, line of sight doesnt matter! 3 Sloths out of 9 Tigers.
wow, don't remember the last time you rated something so high. I am glad to see this game is not overly buggy was my biggest concerns. I knew I was going to like it, being a sifi junky, and preordered delux edition with GamePass. Thanks Fex. Did you do a review like this for BG3? I'll have to go look at how your rating compared to that.
I'm waiting for PS5 for BG3 review so I can include that. As with any score, keep in mind this is my opinion and your experience may differ wildly if you are looking to engage in deep combat, for example.
@@Fextralife I get it no problem, your my go to for all gaming knowledge we have similar tastes pretty much everything on your website are games I love and play also. You really helped me master DOS 1 and 2 - along with making fantastic Elden Ring builds that never felt to "power gamey" (which I hate those kinds of builds) same with your BG3 builds great builds that don't min/max to the ultimate.
I just do not understand why Bethesda does not make its combat a bit more of a priority. When I think of Bethesda RPGs, I think of great exploration, wacky bugs, and mediocre combat, and it wouldn’t have to be that way.
Scores felt pretty out of sync with the actual review. "Just wanted to get the combat over with" = 9/10 Gameplay "Way to many subsystems to learn" = 9/10 Design & Visual "Took about 30 hours to get going" = 10/10 Replayability Overall it was a great review, but those scores got me scratching my head a little.
I put the complaints because I wanted people who specifically care about those things to note them, however for me they weren’t the most important. Gameplay became about exploration, dialogues and questing. Subsystems I eventually learned. The hours to get going are because I was trying to do it all and focusing on the story was the key. as I replay now (I’m on ng plus) I don’t have any issues
No disclaimers referring to Fextralife's possible collaboration with BGS (if any)? If not, I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the fact this was rated a whopping 9.4 which is a near perfect game. How is this rating even possible given such lack luster combat as stated in your review? In your own words 'something you wanted to get done with and not what you're looking forward to'. This is an RPG with a significant focus on questing that involves combat - how does this statement be reflected as a 9? Also Pricepoint being rated a 10 after saying 'it feels justified' is just another example that doesn't reflect the rating. I've been following Fextralife closely the past years - mostly with FromSoftware's titles and more recently BG3, and would be nice to hear from a viewer perspective about any potential biases involved in such a review. Thanks for all the hard work and keep up the great content!
We have had zero monetary relationship with Bethesda for this title (or any other title in years). The last Bethesda game I reviewed was Redfall which I gave a 5.9. I understand that people are having trouble reconciling the score with what they think is more important (usually combat). For me, these games are about exploration and questing, and that experience was extremely fun, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I made it all the way to NG+ and do not feel like stopping, meaning I cannot give gameplay a bad score or I'm being dishonest that I actually like it. There seems to be wide swings in scores among outlets, so I think for this game the like / dislike is going to be a lot more personal (such as IGN US giving it a 7 and IGN Japan giving it a 10)
Listening to the actual way he talked about the game throughout the review, I was surprised to see such a high score at the end. I feel like he was describing an 8, or maybe 8.5 at most.
I think this disconnect is because most people are expecting combat to carry the gameplay, whereas I got lost in exploration and questing and it gave me a really good experience. If you are after combat the game is a lot worse
I don’t feel the summary matched the rest of the review. In one you say you dreaded having to go in to combat and the ship combat is clunky, and in the other you rated the gameplay 9.0. Anyway, my expectations have certainly been lowered over the past few hours, but I’m still looking forward to giving it a shot.
I started playing the game a few days back and so far I have only been to able to play it like half an hour in one go before I get bored. Please tell me that changes as the story progresses because I was playing skyrim last week with more interest.
Highly disagree about the minimap. Bethesda games do not and shout not have minimaps on the HUD. They're distracting and, more often than not, games that have them tend to be designed for you to navigate using it, rather than making a well designed world that's fun to just experience.
A bit disappointed about the combat, but that's Bethesda, I guess. It's never gone beyond mediocre in their games. Still, overall, looks to be an engaging time. I'll probably bite when I find it for $50 or less.
The only games I am looking forward to play in the next 2 years. Hollow Knight Silksong Elden Ring DLC Lies of P Crowsworn Nioh 3 Spellbound Lords of the fallen Code Vein 2
Been watching firefly so making my character based around the Freestar Collective who spends his time in a brown coat rather then a space suit as much as possible is gonna be awesome!
Will you be making builds for this game as well? If so I’m excited to see what you come up with, I’ve been using some of your builds since skyrim and there always so fun.
I'm going to buy or not buy this based on this review. No pressure. I bought Baldur's Gate 3 based on your review and I think it's the best game I've ever played.

Feel like a 9.4 is pretty high given your many critiques. Listening to your review, I thought you'd give it an 8 tops.
What is the difference between 9.4 & 8?
@@TH-camistheworst like a solid B but not an A.
This will be my first and only review of the game before i play it in the UK early hours. Thanks Fex.
Watching just one review of anything is a bad idea
Surprising high score from Fextrlife, most other reviews quite mixed.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it, but I did go all the way to NG+ and it was so well done. It's hard to explain!

So happy to see the return of great immersive singleplayer bethesda games. This gives me so much hope for Elder Scrolls 6.
I love these videos. Been watching fextra for a few years now and he puts a hell of a lot of work i to these. After so many burnt launches, fextra is literally the only reason why i felt comfortable picking up elden ring on launch day. I dont use twitch. But idk what all the controversy ive been seeing lately is about. Keep up the good work man
Really eager to play this, but I'm only 1/4th of the way through of my second BG3 playthrough as a Monk and I still need to do my oathbreaker Paladin.
Yup unlike ign those people fully pony fan boy just imagine if this game releases only on Playstation they gonna give it 10 but since it xbox exclusive they hate it that's why I don't like ign review those guys don't even Play full game , I cant wait to play it 😊😊
9.4 is a surprise. I've seen a number of reviews so far which are all in the 70-75% range.
I think it really depends on what you're expecting. I was ready for an open world bethesda RPG adventure. I got it and more, I'm def satisfied and I'll keep playing.
The game has a 90 average on metacritic so far
@@lucasXPgaming87.
From the same outlets that have been posting negative articles about it since it became Xbox exclusive
Totally agreed: I've read several reviews myself and I can't figure out how this game could even reach a 9 😂 Basically what I've read is:
- no survival mode so no complex mechanic and even no basic... why you should build your house here and there or even bothering having a bed if there is no real need to have it or just why having a bed if the game doesn't ask you to sleep?
How did you do BG3 vids in such great detail AND put 100 hours into Starfield? Sheesh. Impressive.
As someone who's played this I cannot understand how anyone puts the word "exploration" alongside this game. This is very much not my experience.
"Performance is great"
"Gets 90fps @1440p WITH UPSCALING on a graphics card 99% of gamers don't have."

I'm surprised u gave it such a high rating given the amount of negative things u said. I was expecting a 7-8. Thanks for the review :)
This man changed my life "In The Lands Between" love your reviews keep up the awesome work fextralife team
>4090 required to play at 90fps at 1440p

I have never had this much fun in a game before!!
Probably won't beat Baldur's Gate 3 in ratings, but god damn it is a good year for RPGs
Nice! Tomorrow is my birthday, and it's gonna be Starfield all day long. :)

I feel the same. Telling me the combat is a chore to get through and showing me those typical Bethesda bugs. I'm sure the game will get better in some ways but combat is a core aspect

Thx for the spoiler free review! Always appreciate you guys. Ignore the haters and keep on keepin on.
wow, don't remember the last time you rated something so high.
@@p.melifant1091 The combat is significantly improved from their previous games. Gunplay is pretty good, just not like CoD or Doom-level.
Scores felt pretty out of sync with the actual review.
"Just wanted to get the combat over with" = 9/10 Gameplay
"Way to many subsystems to learn" = 9/10 Design & Visual
"Took about 30 hours to get going" = 10/10 Replayability
Overall it was a great review, but those scores got me scratching my head a little.
Thanks for clearing things up! @@Fextralife
Great review definitely playing this
Awesome Review Fextra, your reviews are one of the only ones I enjoy watching. I am excited to see what kinds of builds you put out for this game 😃
Great video man and this starfield review is so awesome :]
There seems to be wide swings in scores among outlets, so I think for this game the like / dislike is going to be a lot more personal (such as IGN US giving it a 7 and IGN Japan giving it a 10)
@@Fextralife Thanks for such a quick and thoughtful reply! Just shows how dedicated you and your team are to the gaming community. Much appreciated!
@@Fextralife Ah, that makes sense!
The hype is officially real

Hopefully by September 6, it’ll be delivered on the Xbox console. It looks promising. Hopefully 🤞 it doesn’t disappoint
This game combined with Star Citizen would be the perfect scifi game.
Highly disagree about the minimap.
Bethesda games do not and shout not have minimaps on the HUD. They're distracting and, more often than not, games that have them tend to be designed for you to navigate using it, rather than making a well designed world that's fun to just experience.
I feel this initial release will be a template for not only Bethesda to add MUCH content over the coming years, but also COUNTLESS mods.
A bit disappointed about the combat, but that's Bethesda, I guess. It's never gone beyond mediocre in their games. Still, overall, looks to be an engaging time. I'll probably bite when I find it for $50 or less.
