The Before you Buys and your own personal opinion on games are really the only ones I genuinely enjoy and trust. Great to hear Starfield is going to be good!
The game is nothing close to good. Forspoken is better than this trash. It's a conversation sim, not up to par graphics and tons of bugs. Copies completely(without the cool powers) from mass effect but combat toned down a lot. Ppfff even mass effect has a better story, in depth information and mandy!
@@stevendavis6157 Sorry you feel that way man. I'm about 15hrs in and I'm having a blast. Some games just aren't meant for some people and that's okay.
That part about flying to a planet encountering a dungeon and getting some random loot was and always will be peak Bethesda. Wouldn't have it any other way
The problem others stated is... ■ Caves and bases have the same layout ■ Procedural creation will put almost the same enemies and loot in these areas. So it is fun the first few times... but it seems it get too repetitive after a few planets.
Jake you're such a cool guy. I always love your thoughts and takes. You seem so real, not a character, or a corporate shill. I'm glad I stumbled across you and the Gameranx crew so many years ago. You guys are a treasure.
Its a fallout game in space but without the exploration and freedom and more loading screen and invisble walls Most planets are empty And everything looks the same
Super excited for Starfield, but for me it always seems to payoff waiting for updates/improvements/expansions on these types of games. Hope everyone playing at launch enjoys it!
That’s just modern games in general and its a shame. And this one doesn’t appear to be any different. You shouldn’t have to play 20 hours or wait for mods/updates for the game to be good
Yeah, seeming more and more like this is going to be one I wait on. Like, for example, Cyberpunk is about to get Phantom Liberty (Cyberpunk 2.0) which is supposed to completely overhaul the game. I'll probably just play that. Starfield gets an expansion early next year, I think in February. I might wait and play it then.
So the general consensus seems to be its okay, but not GOTY levels of good. Just a good space game. It's amazing how quickly the hype got tempered once we got to see the actual game, and not just the fantasy in everyone's heads.
Thanks so much for putting out this video, Jake. I'm a couple of hours in and not feeling it so I'm really encouraged by what you have to say. I love Bethesda games - still playing 76 & an ultra modded FO 4 - and I tried to keep my expectations for Starfield in check, but it's hard not to get carried away. I'll keep following the main story and look forward to getting drawn in!
It's funny that prior to release Jake said that Starfield's characters and story looked uninteresting and boring but turns out he ended up liking the characters/main story quite a bit, and according to other reviews, it appears that it's arguably Bethesda's best main story yet.
I had a similar experience. At first I was just like, "eh, this is alright." And then the RPG elements and even some of the mechanics really started to grow on me. Maybe it wasnt perfectly executed, but I can totally see what they are going for. And it's good. Also, the shooting surprised me by how good it was. I expected it to be bad.
Honestly, I think a good chunk of that extra year of development went to fixing the combat/gunplay since that was most people's issue with the original gameplay
@@novak.r And it turns out Bethesda improved the combat themselves. There was a rumor going around that iD Software helped with the gunplay but it turns out they only helped with the motion blur. Hopefully that means Elder Scrolls 6's combat will be a big improvement over Skyrim's (I know Elder Scrolls has no guns, but still).
@@jimmythegamer2231 I still hope they switch engines or use a drastically upgraded one although that's very unlikely. It'll probably be Todd's last game though so hopefully it turns out good
Really excited to jump into this. Seems like it’s not in that “one of the most important RPGs ever made” category they said it was during the Xbox showcase, but I love Bethesda games despite their flaws. I just want be a space guy.
@@dissinlol Its exactly that, a Skyrim/Fallout in space. The beginning is slow, but once you're in control you can do whatever you want. Just like the previous games, you can ignore the main quest and go out and live in the world. Dope.
I really like that you're objective about the game. That's the shit that separates the true game journalists from the schills and the tryhards. The interT00bZ has either made it out to be the Second Coming of Cheezuz or incapable of meeting it's own hype (which between the schills and Bethesda, that hype bar is really fucking high). Jake just says "this is cool, this is wack," and if there's more pluses than minuses, he says as much. The schills are giving the game Royal Mr. Handys (if you catch my drift), the haters are making it out to be Fallout 77. Jake is a real game jouralist because he knows the goal isn't getting in a company's good graces, or chasing clout by trashing anything that isn't perfect... It's about getting good, reliable information out to the gamersphere. As a former associate editor for a game site, real recognizes real.
Let me explain. A "fan" in this case is someone who really enjoys a specific thing. "Bethesda" is a video game company, which is the thing this person is a fan of. Hope that clears things up!
@@jamoke123 really well put. I don't think I could add any more to what you said. I'm glad to hear that there are other fans of things out there. It sometimes hard to put to words these complex feelings of liking things and wanting more things like the things I like!

I’m on a media blackout on Starfield reviews and reactions, because I just want to enjoy it and immerse myself in the game before the avalanche of reactions hits. But I had to get Jake’s take, because I trust him and love the way he presents his experiences. I booted up the game at 5pm PST on the 31st and dove right in. I hope someone does a Serenity/ Firefly mod. Also StarCraft mod would be sick. Been itching to play a 3rd person StarCraft game ever since I saw the Ghost trailer as a kid.
All of the reviews I've seen of this game that gave it 9's and 10's say "oh i was playing it wrong. you have to play it like this. you have to do ABC first". This is the first honest review I've seen that adds those caveats while giving a reasonable score.
I suspected this game would be classic Bethesda and not the Star Citizen killer people seemed to think it would be, but you know, internet. It's either GOTY or the worst game of the century.
Couldn’t agree more with that “enjoy a game like a normal person” and stopping the whole angry nit picky online discourse. Really enjoy watching this side of your opinion right after the BYB. Almost like you can get in a lil bit more info that you didn’t manage to squeeze into the BYB. Also had me dead with that “saw the cowboy and thought, I hate that guy.”
I’m just glad it seems to actually run at a stable 30 fps on the series s. I’m a ps5 player so my plan was to always cop a series s for this game if it ran well 🙏🏽
If it can be modded it will be great. I hope Bethesda realized how modders keep their games interesting. They need to make a game that facilitates that. I want a good base game, sure, but I will be playing it for years if modders can have their way with it. I put in hundreds and hundreds of hours in Skyrim on Xbox 10 years ago but I just put together my first PC about a year ago and am playing Skyrim (and fallout 4) again because of hard working modders
Ya know a bunch of reviewers are saying the same thing. Trying to go off and do your own exploration off the track of the main quest toward the beginning like a typical BGS game leads to disappointment. But ppl seem to say following the main quest early seems to be the way to go because it opens up other possibilities and shows you this isn't a game with a lot of randomly discoverable interesting content at least in ways that are easily noticed. But instead opens up systems and introduces you to areas with a lot of interesting side quests and acts as a pointer for that discoverable content. Ppl seem off put that going off and trying to discover things like you would in fallout or skyrim just doesn't reap the same satisfaction. I guess this game has a different way about it that seems to have to be realized. Great talk Jake. Love ya bro.
It was very brief, maybe a few frames, but we've seen what looks like gravity manipulation with the player characters hand seemingly causing it. Could be any number of things though really.
I’m loving it so far, although, it could definitely use a lot less loading zones, I’d rather just take a 30 second load if that meant I could enter buildings within cities without another load.
I'm still not too hyped to be honest, but it would be foolish not to give it a try on gamepass. I'm going in totally skeptical with zero expectations and we'll see. Very transparent and informative content as always, thank you for being so real Jake.
Honestly the best way to go in a game if you ask me. The internet has definitely tainted our views on games when it comes to gaming opinions. I sometimes miss when we just played a game because it looked cool and we ended up really enjoying it
I mean if you like Skyrim and Fallout you'll know what you're getting into, and its great. If you never played those games or hated them then this won't impress you.
Starfield is an ''Okay'' game, but if you starting thinking about it; - Bethesda is behind it - Prev. title was almost a decade ago - So much has changed in 10 years for game development It's actually really dissapointing to me personally. - Too many loading screens (even vanilla F4 had some seamless buildings/towns) - Every single building that's closed is an instance/loading screen - Elevators are loading screens (even F4 didn't have this) - Getting out of the ship directly is a loading screen - Getting out of the ship manually is also a loading screen - Using public transport is a loading screen The loading screens are bland/black, not used to it since their prev. titles always had art and/or text/tips showing. - They decide to go 30 FPS for performance reasoning, but for what when all of it is already overlapped with way more loading screens and issues than decade older titles they've made? Fallout 4 had a lack of social aspect that was such a big letdown and a huge critic people gave it. Starfield uses the literal same type of lacking social aspect, it's not even build upon. Cyberpunk 2077 had many issues, but one of them was the lackluster AI as well as despawning/spawning objects, characters and vehicles off-screen. Starfield does the exact same thing with way less objects, characters and vehicles to spawn. It feels like a real letdown if you think that Bethesda developed this, with all this time, budget and resources they have acces to.
I think that’s why so many people are disappointed. This game took 8 years of development and hype build up and it’s not amazing. If it would have taken 3 it would have been fine.
Im going to wait a week or two. if this game is as good as Skyrim im going to buy an XSX and the 4K TV ive been wanting to buy. I want this game to be great so bad.
Everyone wanted this game to be amazing (especially after the long delays) but it’s not, which is a bit sad. Seems ok or even very good, but not the masterpiece we wanted. But there are lots of great games coming out with awesome graphics, so upgrading to the latest consoles is great.
Thanks Jake, you just saved me $$. There's something off about this game and I just get the feeling it's not gonna scratch my itch. Maybe if it were multiplayer I could buy into it.
I gotta disagree with you Jake. The second I got to new Atlantis and met up with Sarah for the first time, I did the same thing you did and just started doing side quest. I found so many amazing sidequest with super intriguing stories. I'm over 70 hours in and I still have never returned to Constellation to continue the quest LOL. Update: now I understand falcon's reasoning to play main quest until "into the unknown" before starting all the sides haha
Starfield is more of an first person shooter in space but with crafting elements from Fallout 4. Personally. This game doesn't remind at all of Skyrim but more Fallout.

I’m 80+ hours in since Early Access and I’m lovin’ Starfield! There is so much to do, I haven’t even been to Neon yet. It’s true, the more you put into the game the more you get out of it.
The modding potential looks insane. Can't wait for modders to build custom planets.
I really wish there was vehicles in the game then I would have explored every planet. Love the video Jake
■ Caves and bases have the same layout
■ Procedural creation will put almost the same enemies and loot in these areas.
Jake is the next Geoff Keighley
Its a fallout game in space but without the exploration and freedom and more loading screen and invisble walls
Most planets are empty
And everything looks the same
Super excited for Starfield, but for me it always seems to payoff waiting for updates/improvements/expansions on these types of games. Hope everyone playing at launch enjoys it!
That’s just modern games in general and its a shame. And this one doesn’t appear to be any different. You shouldn’t have to play 20 hours or wait for mods/updates for the game to be good
Yea I only try out games a year or two after they launch for that reason.
@@nyikomaswanganyi5983that’s fair. I’ve gamed since the early ‘90s and have always gotten too excited to wait :)
I hate that I took the week after release off for this game with pre-order and I'm kind of regretting it as I know I should've probably followed suit.
One of the best reviews I’ve watched all day about Starfield, I have 6 mins before I can play it and I am so hyped!
Skyrim/Fallout 4 in space is what I'm hoping for. T-minus 2 hours until I get to log in and play!
Well how is it ?
I'm a Bethesda-ass Bethesda fan. I think I'm going to really enjoy this after hearing Jake's take!
Let’s skip over the fact that he says he likes it and not love it lol All Bethesda games are dog shit so it’s probably targeting fans like you
I’m honestly perplexed about how you are a bethesda fan..
@@BillThaPillmy man is pretty sour its not coming on playstation. Just play Spiderman, probably the same as a space adventure.
In Beth games, the main quest is always nothing special but more of an excuse to hook you into awesome side quests and interesting locales and characters and immersion.
when Jake says that shit really hit, you can feel it
I’m on a media blackout on Starfield reviews and reactions, because I just want to enjoy it and immerse myself in the game before the avalanche of reactions hits. But I had to get Jake’s take, because I trust him and love the way he presents his experiences. I booted up the game at 5pm PST on the 31st and dove right in. I’m glad I wandered off from the main quest at first to get solid with gameplay - and damn, that first experience flying the spaceship was amazing. I am loving this game so far.
When the HECK did Jake hit 350k subs???
I feel like just yesterday he was at less than 50k lol
Good job man 👏👏
Starfield is more a loading screen simulator than it is a space sim.
"It grew on me" isn't exactly what I would have expected or wanted from a game this long in development hahaha
Lmao oh god I hope it’s good

he's been playing it for a pretty short time. if someone said this a year from now, that might be concerning. not sure why basically "it got much better as I continued to play" is a red flag lol
@@imitenotbe disagree. No one says that about skyrim. Oblivion, new vegas, fall out 4.
@@bombyo3634 I mean, you're wrong lol tons of people have said that about those games. Moreso about after their first playthrough though. Fallout 4 probably being one of the most frequently "it grew on me" mentioned games

I'm playing right now and I remembered you said there's no 'holy shit' moment like walking out of the sewers in Oblivion for the first time. Dude, when you walk out onto that moon for the first time and you see the ship come down, that was that moment for me.

Cheers. Thanks!
I hope someone does a Serenity/ Firefly mod. Also StarCraft mod would be sick. Been itching to play a 3rd person StarCraft game ever since I saw the Ghost trailer as a kid.
First in line for the Firefly mod. Everyone get behind me.
I was already looking for screenshots of the Serenity for blueprints. It might already be doable.
I'd love a Futurama themed mod for sure.
Reading the "Newest" comments compared to the default comments is really mind blowing. Real vs what they want you to see
I’m thinking this is Bethesda in space not star citizen. My expectations are where they need to be
Thank god! Star Citizen is boriiiing.

All of the reviews I've seen of this game that gave it 9's and 10's say "oh i was playing it wrong. you have to play it like this. you have to do ABC first". This is the first honest review I've seen that adds those caveats while giving a reasonable score.
For me it's a straight 10/10 game and exactly how I wanted it.
I play since 2 days and already have 31 hours lol.
Best space game for me hands down.
That’s wild but i respect your opinion. I give this game a 5/10. No man’s sky space exploration is much better than this game
9/10 for me but it's totally subjective. I can see how some might think it's boring but I love it. Fuck all the loading screens tho
Thanks!
Woah, thank you!!
I suspected this game would be classic Bethesda and not the Star Citizen killer people seemed to think it would be, but you know, internet. It's either GOTY or the worst game of the century.
It's not about Starfield it's about the MODS!!! can't wait!!!

@@medalgearsalad1419 Yes, Digital Foundry said the game runs well on the Series S
Sooooooo, what you're saying is, it just works
If it can be modded it will be great. I hope Bethesda realized how modders keep their games interesting. They need to make a game that facilitates that. I want a good base game, sure, but I will be playing it for years if modders can have their way with it. I put in hundreds and hundreds of hours in Skyrim on Xbox 10 years ago but I just put together my first PC about a year ago and am playing Skyrim (and fallout 4) again because of hard working modders
The game itself is already great. Strange that you think mods are the main thing good about it.
@@jimmythegamer2231it’s good not great. already installed a few mods that make it better.
I know they briefly teased something at the end of their showcase but I do hope there is some sort of “magic system” to play around with
you're space dragonborn, that's it.
In space, no one can hear you shout.
NO IF YOU WANT MAGIC GO PLAY SYKRIM THIS IS SPACE GAME
I’m sorry, little one.
I am going in super blind.
Same here
Honestly the best way to go in a game if you ask me.
@@medalgearsalad1419 I like them both but that was a decade ago and they were way cheaper. Just doesn't look like this has advanced much from that
Starfield is an ''Okay'' game, but if you starting thinking about it;
- Bethesda is behind it
- Prev. title was almost a decade ago
- So much has changed in 10 years for game development
It's actually really dissapointing to me personally.
- Too many loading screens (even vanilla F4 had some seamless buildings/towns)
- Every single building that's closed is an instance/loading screen
- Elevators are loading screens (even F4 didn't have this)
- Getting out of the ship directly is a loading screen
- Getting out of the ship manually is also a loading screen
- Using public transport is a loading screen
The loading screens are bland/black, not used to it since their prev. titles always had art and/or text/tips showing.
I like it. 8 years of hype for I like it
I think that’s why so many people are disappointed. This game took 8 years of development and hype build up and it’s not amazing. If it would have taken 3 it would have been fine.
I adjusted my expectations once I found out they were yet again using the same geriatric engine.
Im going to wait a week or two. if this game is as good as Skyrim im going to buy an XSX and the 4K TV ive been wanting to buy. I want this game to be great so bad.
