Not even 1 minute in and already chuckling at all the digs at the people who were so sure the game would be bad before playing 1 second of it. I love your work man, you're one of the only reviewers left that I trust after Total Biscuit died (RIP).
May not be bad, but it seems like it may have been overhyped. It is what it is. I will definitely be playing it, and it looks like it'll still be a good time.
@@loubloom1941 They weren't commenting on whether it was overhyped or not. I think it's more a reference to everyone who said that the game was guaranteed to be a technical disaster, full of crippling bugs and fluctuating frame rates. It's good to see those doomers eat their words.
@@Tazza19931 Luke Stephens' review has shown plenty of game breaking bugs already. NPCs falling through the floor, quests impossible to complete, procedural generation being limited in the things it can create and so on.
@@ChaosZero. I've already watched Luke Stephens' review, where he states that he started getting these bugs after the first 20 hours. Clearly, other people's experiences have been different if this review is anything to go by. Also, my point is that the game isn't as jankey as many people thought it would be, which is true. Comments regarding the technical performance of the game have been, by and large, mostly positive.
The combat hardly looks a day newer than Fallout 4, which was considered middling at best in 2015. Same components - hitscan weapons, NPCs too busy with cover animations to be reactive, weapon bashing that does almost nothing, hovering around a room taking chip damage and stimpaking, people walking through walls. I mean, it's good enough for me I guess, but let's be real here.
@@ULTRAOutdoorsman Speak for yourself, I loved the combat in Fallout 4. Bethesda has their faults but their games always have enjoyable gameplay, they know how to make a fun and addictive game loop.
Even in the games I liked such as Oblivion and New Vegas, I never cared for the combat that much. I like that they seemed to have improved it quite a bit.
Well i mean one look shows some with even better perf than me. I admit I can only test on three pcs though. So 6 million people will be a bigger sample draw. Even a lot of redditors have posted higher city fps than I had
What I'm saying is 4k 60 on a 4090 is pretty poor target. Sure it's playable but for the fidelity the performance is bad. Much better looking games get much better frames.
For a 4k game with most settings high? I can't say I agree much. While I would WANT extra and higher of course. That doesn't jive sadly with almost any current titles. Though if we compare titles then we have to compare content and engines, and at that point...well. Then we would just start arbitrarily assigning a ceiling ABOVE 60. 90? 120? its a very hard line to draw and what games to compare. And NOW or on the day those games released. @@scatz4569
@@ACGreviews I mean pick any better looking games from this year and compare frames? BG3 maybe? It's utilisation is also terrible, in some cases not big gains you'd expect when changing resolutions but not actually taxing the CPU. Bethesda games have run pretty trash on release for at least a decade. FO4 downtown for example, still runs poorly today. Anyway we can agree to disagree but as a high end GPU owner who expects to run all settings maxed for a year or two after GPU releases this bites.
@@Osprey1994 any opinions different from his = fake and paid for. It is, after all, impossible that the reviewer genuinely enjoyed a Bethesda gameplay loop.
The first two minutes are one of the reasons why you are my to go to reviewer, i love your play on and around words which are pretty crafty and unique. Other then that you are pretty much always on target with your reviews and detailed in what to expect. Thanks for making these reviews !
I bought the game on the strength of this review. I had to request a refund. As of pre-launch, this game has severe issues with stuttering/freezing on some Nvidia (and possibly some AMD) cards. Ensuring it's installed on an SSD (yes, that's a requirement) fixes it for some. Not for me. I tried every fix people suggested (well, every fix that didn't seem like a ridiculous idea, internet people can be silly sometimes). Nothing. So yeah. Until/unless they can patch this issue, this game is a Wait for me.
You failed to warn anyone about the abysmal performance, lack of ANY ability to change FOV even through console, no brightness or gamma sliders…. Let me add on no HDR support, no ultra wide support
@@alpsalish I do too. The game performs horribly. Performance issues aren’t linked to specific cards. He should have mentioned these things but Bethesda contacts are too valuable.
The good news is he highly recommends it & he's usually very critical so I feel better knowing the gameplay loop is amazing. I'm even more hyped for the 6th now 😁
@@georgebrown2190 Incredible to hear! I was legitimately scared to watch this review after seeing the lukewarm reviews from other outlets. I just felt like the game wouldn't have jived with ACG. But that's why it's great we have so many different opinions.
I bought the game largely because of this review. And I got to say, I was HUGELY disappointed. Probably my biggest game disappointment of the year. Frankly, so much of what ACG described was not what the game turned out to be. There is much criticism for this game. After 30 hours of gameplay, I agree with ALL of it. Such a hollow world with no real life to it. I wish I could get my money back.
@@ACGreviews Because YOU said it took a while to get going. Eventually, I uninstalled it and moved on. But figured I'd leave you with my feedback since your feedback led to my experience. Frankly, it felt like I was playing a completely different experience from what you described.
@dudimis I agree with you. Everyone was on this games noots and I can't see why with how bad the negatives are. This studio has been making the same game now over and over. He was not impressed enough by Alan Wake 2 on his review but this is a must buy... We all have different opinions but it seems like when somone likes something enough, they overlook the faults and this seems to be the case here. I purchased this game based off his review and I do reget it.
Honestly, I'd say never touch. Don't waste your time. This game isn't aggressively bad. It's just aggressively mediocre in every way. The combat is average, the diologue is bland and soulless, the player choice is merely a very thin illusion, the universe is empty, bland, boring and repetitive, the main story is merely okay, the side quests are repetitive and meaningless, the loot is generic and boring. The exploration is pointless because there's nothing to find, and you hit loading screens way too often. The ship building is the only part of this game I'd say is "good" or "cool" or "interesting."" And even then, you just use your cool ship to do fairly bland and repetitive space battles and a bunch of fast travel loading screens. None of it is outstandingly bad. It's not like the Kong game, that is just actively sh*tty and terrible, but with so many better options to invest your time and money into, there's simply no reason to waste them on this aggressively mediocre game.
Watched review by Luke Stevens, he talked about cut and paste encounters in the game. One he referenced was miners who unearthed an alien skull. He ends up battling the miners, forgot why. But this same scene occurs two more times on other planets with enemies in the same locations as first encounter. He has other examples of deja vu experiences in the game. With 144 hours in did you find similar cut and paste occurrences in the game? Thank you for the review.
Luke Stevens has been critical of the game for a long time, even before launch. That doesn't mean his criticisms are invalid or wrong, its just that he's mainly looking at aspects of the game which fall short. His audience is people who basically want to hear someone criticize Bethesda. But I think the meat of his claim that that you can find repeated procedural content in the game seems reasonable, because it makes mathematical sense. Its basically a variation of the birthday problem. If Bethesda designed 50 unique procedural locations that are instanced on planet tiles (which is a lot and could probably make up its own 20 hour game) and you explore 10 of them, there's a 62% chance you see repeats. If Bethesda designed only 40 or 30, the the probability of repeats grows to 71% or 82%. So I don't doubt Luke Stevens could find 3 identical locations. But I've played 100 hours of this game and I haven't noticed repeats. Why? Well because out of those 100 hours I spent 97 of those hours doing the handcrafted content and only 3 hours doing random procedural content on planets. And I didn't do those 3 hours all at once, but spread out, so even if I did see repeated content I didn't notice it. Starfield is such a huge game that you can basically spent dozens of hours doing whatever content you want. If you want to do procedural content for hours on end, you can. But my personal recommendation would be to not just exit your ship and run in a random direction to explore random planets like you explore the world of Skyrim. Instead you should explore the cities in that way. Because in Starfield the are huge and filled to the brim with interesting handcrafted quests, especially Neon and Akila city.
@arthurhogan1021 Most of the copy paste areas are procedurally generated random areas when exploring planets. This is probably the weakest aspect of the game entirely.
This is the reason you are the first review I have watched. Unbiased, to the point and no spoilers. I cant wait to finally play this tomorrow. Thanks again and keep up the excellent unbiased reviews. You are a credit to the gaming community no matter what format you review.

I’m surprised. I’ve always valued this channel for being able to criticise games that other reviewers maybe hype up a little too much. Interestingly, this is a really solid review while other outlets which I normally consider to be a little too positive are giving it average reviews. Curious to see how this game develops over time as DLC and additional features/content are inevitably added in.

All the youtube reviews are essentially saying exactly the same thing like its a script. Glowing reviews placed over the background of boring gameplay. Not making sense. Still yet to see anything you can do in this game that hasn't been done to death before, and better. Granted, it looks nice ... ok. And what is with EVERY damn comment being "oh reviewer X really nailed this review. I only trust him to review my games".
After 30 hours in the game. Its a wait. 1. AMD video cards have issues. 2. the UI is limited to 30fps so it's choppy, its most obvious in space flight. 3. The modding community is just getting started. Most of the mods are re-shaes, tint removal, and you have to download a DLSS Mod because of Bethesda's AMD agreement.
This review vs Worth A Buy's review ("This game is a disaster!"). Is the background and perk system really that bad? It sounds very grindy, like what he has to say about locking-picking and some of the other things that you literally cannot do before perking up, such as Stealth??? Even Oblivion and Skyrim let you crouch into a stealth mode without any skills development.
Very well-worded review, as usual. Appreciate the usual mix of showing what's good and noting what might be a bit more disappointing without overly sarcastic negatives and overly grandiose praise. Tempered expectations in reviews is surprisingly (okay, not *that* surprisingly) hard to find nowadays.
@@cianbroderick7733 Ultimately it's a toss-up when you're looking at major developers/publishers. Even Arkane, with all of their resources and goodwill... Still managed to make Redfall. @demitriomni like the developers, I don't think players really have the desire to root for those second grade games anymore. If im spending that much on something I kind of just expect something great
After delivering such a glowing review I was excited to see this game for myself. I was immediately met with a washed out image on my Oled. It looks like I'm emulating a TN panel with the lack of contrast in the lighting. There are no brightness adjustment settings in the game. Nothing. No gamma adjustment. No obvious HDR support either. The raised blacks completely eliminate contrast and can be seen as early as the opening scene in the game. ACG, you toyed with brightness but failed to mention these settings were on your own personal display or display driver settings, not in game. For a triple A game to lack such a basic feature is astounding. To say the performance of this game is better than expected when getting a hair over 60fps at native 4k with a 4090 is misleading. FSR being a crutch for decent performance is a red flag and needs criticized as well. While you seem to have really enjoyed the game and its strengths, I'm not sure where your critical eye went in regards to these problems that dramatically alter the player experience. Oh, and the lack of FOV slider is ridiculous as well.
@@Akihito007 no. My tv is color calibrated. It’s the game that was screwed up and lacked options to fix it. The first patch they released addressed the issues I mentioned.

Nope not how it works. unless we pretend a level 3 is a level 1 stopper which any cert would find as we recently just saw with Ubisoft. Not how it works or ever works. Even looking over 60 hours of footage its surprisingly bug low. Now I dont know anyone saying its "bug free" and maybe they are misusing the term as its not. But its not the same as every third A being missing from a sentence. Then again I didn't watch a ton of streams. I played it. I would assume others who played it would report bugs like I did. What is there to return to..?. once you realize how short the game is after waiting almost 10 years of development time... how can you sit there and tell me those copy-paste dungeons ugly npcs, lack of dialogue, lack of exploration this game just lacks everything that it sold on... Mass Effect: Andromeda is 100% better. It has all the same limitations but has an actual story with momentum and mystery... This games story is just a GIGANTIC tease... all it does is make you wish the actual Starfield galaxy had anything meaningful to offer you. This game starts out tricking you into thinking its a big open sandbox.. it is not thats where all my excitement came from. The potential to find amazing stories and explore amazing locations. That just isnt on offer in Starfield. The Bethesda that made Morrowind and Fallout 3 does not exist anymore and we all have to accept that.
Bethesda's game design is still stuck in the 2010's. Game has many quest breaking bugs. Animations are stiff and what game in 2023 has load screens for everything you do? You can't explore space each planet has invisible barriers with very little to do. Reused assets on multiple planets to the point you encounter the same enemies in the same spots. If this wasn't a Bethesda game people would be ripping it a new a$$hole.
Every review "It works great on my RTX 4090"... Well most people don't have 4090. On my 3060 works like complete crap. Recommended 2080 so my 3060 is close to recommended. 34 fps on medium graphics which is unacceptable.
Its setting is space but not really fair to call it a "space game". Its a FPS/RPG. Lots of menus, fast travel, and loading screens. Might as well consider Destiny a "Space Game" too while you are at it. Other reviews mention bugs, invisible boundaries planetside and other deflating factors that is sure to upset alot of folks based on the hype I've seen for this game. You watch the trailer all you see is space and ship but watch any review and all you'll see is foot combat because its the real strong point of gameplay.
Having just done yet another heavily modded Skyrim playthrough, I am very happy to hear there's more Bethesda magic left in the world. Let's go Starfield!
Great recommendation, man. You must’ve played a different version because the one I have is absolute crap. Garbage performance, constant load screens, and boring exploration. I should’ve waited for Worth a Buy’s review.
12:26 this is pretty common in open world games with lots of characters. In Cyberpunk2077 you also had awesome looking story characters and horrible looking random people on the streets
It just doesn't make sense to me... A space exploration game without ground vehicles, mounts or atmospheric flight. No alien races, artefacts or technology. This is absurd.
Im not impressed at all yet. Some stuff in this game is 10/10 lazy for a big studio who's had 6 years to work on it. I am a few hours in. Never pre ordering again.
I swear either Starfield reviewers are being paid off to praise the game or standards have just fallen so increcibly low over the last decade people just put up with it.
@@Mohgenstein I have. Planets are empty with barely anything to do, side content is just copy-paste locations and labs, story is trash, dialogue sucks and most characters have no personality. Never mind the game being badly optimized despite looking like a PS4 game. It's boring too. There is also no sense of space exploration as everything is just divided into hubs seperated by loading screens. And the numerous bugs ang glitches of course. How this pile of trash deserves anything over a 5/10 is beyond me. I can't believe it's actually worst than Fallout 4. Fallout 4 at least had some charm to it.
Or... or... Hear me out, take the tin foil hat off, this might blow your mind. People have different preferences. It's crazy how that works, right? Many love cyberpunk and many others hate it. Some people say no man's sky is fantastic now, while others say it's still a boring procedural game. Not every game is meant for you. Reviews are simply the opinion of a single person, that's it. I skipped most of the review, not to spoil myself. But I still wanted to hear your thoughts at the end. You saying you will be playing this game for a long time is a high endorsement in my book. Sounds like another BSG banger. I'm hyped.
I had my suspicions about this reviewer since his Hellblade 1 review, Line up the shapes puzzles over and over, boring combat (literally 1 enemy type) that's not satisfying and barely works, but about mental health, so it's a great game...Now paid review for "SlopField". I'm not buying a AAA game with mixed on Steam, where I have force feed 100hrs to make it fun for me... I value my time.
Ty for saying that it's bug-filled right at the beginning instead of making us wait. tuned out and going to wait a year or longer to pick it up on sale when modders fix all the bugs.
I feel crazy but playing this game feels so hollow and lifeless for a "space rpg" I expected something like Elite Dangerous but it just feels like Fallout 76 in space. The constant loading screens are insane for 2023
"Thanks to Beth for the code" The fact that you got the code when many others including bigger youtubers did not one tells me that this will not be a truthful review. Hence why your negatives are "tip toed" around.
One thing I think is a little disappointing is the general tech. We're still clicking on doors to be teleported outside our ship with a loading screen in between, or when entering a small office. Travel to another planet? Click on a map and you're teleported there. The actual space travel you'll just have to imagine. It feels so primitive. Oh and the UI. Managing your inventory feels like going back to the Oblivion days. They still can't come up with something better than a text list?
Usually we have a similar mindset when it comes to games (even though I play far fewer games as you of course). But wow, do we have different experiences here. For me this really felt like a 10 year old game with lacking characters and story. After several hours I just gave up, happy I got it on Gamepass (I wouldn't have bought it otherwise though). I have put dozens of hours in morrowind, oblivion, skyrim and fallout 3. But this just felt like a step back from what they did there.

This is why ACG is pretty much the only reviewer ill watch people get so hung up on a score they forget to mention if its actually fun and enjoyable.
the combat was one of the things i was most worried about, im glad to hear thats good
Same that was my main worry. Game should definitely be worth a play.
@@ULTRAOutdoorsman nah u jus hating at this point
@@ULTRAOutdoorsman Speak for yourself, I loved the combat in Fallout 4. Bethesda has their faults but their games always have enjoyable gameplay, they know how to make a fun and addictive game loop.
Even in the games I liked such as Oblivion and New Vegas, I never cared for the combat that much. I like that they seemed to have improved it quite a bit.
Performance is definitely lacking, feel like ACG isn't in line with other's here
Well i mean one look shows some with even better perf than me. I admit I can only test on three pcs though. So 6 million people will be a bigger sample draw. Even a lot of redditors have posted higher city fps than I had
Using a AMD CPU and GPU I get higher FPS than he did it appears. I have rebar on though.

I disagree, it's the first game I pre-ordered since 2011 and I put 160 hours in it. I genuinely think it is very decent and worth the money.
@TerribleTom113 Hey, that's your opinion. Others people seem to be enjoying it. Everyone has different tastes
Agree, ACG has shit taste.
He omitted it on purpose. Like so many other criticisms.
@arthurhogan1021
Most of the copy paste areas are procedurally generated random areas when exploring planets. This is probably the weakest aspect of the game entirely.

People tend to trust reviewers who tell them what they want to hear... its basic human psychology. you associate a positive feeling because he is saying sweet nothings in your ear. if it was opposite then your trust wouldnt be there... so is it really "trust" or just liking what you hear.
@@NavAK_86 lol that exactly what it is.
This is not a review this is a sales pitch
💯
Microsoft check cleared.
Pathetic
You were really playing with our emotions in the first 45 seconds
I’m getting 60 on my 3060ti but I do get your point with them always basing it on maximum power pcs
You modders are the reason todd is getting away with such a boring shitty game. Shame on you.
@@Djeveldyrker The side unimportant BG3 NPCs don't look particularly great tho
It just doesn't make sense to me... A space exploration game without ground vehicles, mounts or atmospheric flight. No alien races, artefacts or technology. This is absurd.
Nah. It's pretty great.
I'm so excited/nervous. Came to your review first because I knew you'd give it me straight!
Im not impressed at all yet. Some stuff in this game is 10/10 lazy for a big studio who's had 6 years to work on it. I am a few hours in. Never pre ordering again.
Lazy? Please do tell?
Game wasn’t made for you.
He got paid off for this review 😂
100% - no longer worth watching or trusting,
Wonder, for transparency, he'll be clear on the relationship with and the response from Bethesda
holy cow the facial animations are uncanny its like one of those android heads with plastic skin they show at robotics expos
"Absolutely worth buying"
Those are the only words I need to hear. Thanks for the great review as always ACG.
19:03 - fun factor
20:18 - verdict
the intro had me in the first half, second and third. Great review, proving why you are the best in the game
I swear either Starfield reviewers are being paid off to praise the game or standards have just fallen so increcibly low over the last decade people just put up with it.
I’m sure you’ve played it
@@Mohgenstein I have.
Not everyone's personal opinions or taste will always line up with what you like. There's no check that cleared from microsoft for every single person on planet Earth who likes starfield...
The Ai is way worse than just ok
Ty for saying that it's bug-filled right at the beginning instead of making us wait. tuned out and going to wait a year or longer to pick it up on sale when modders fix all the bugs.
That's a joke right? lol
@@hallowalex78 Nope. still 7 more months before I grab this game, assuming it's fixed by then.
@@xbon1 he was making a joke
I feel crazy but playing this game feels so hollow and lifeless for a "space rpg"
I expected something like Elite Dangerous but it just feels like Fallout 76 in space. The constant loading screens are insane for 2023
"Thanks to Beth for the code" The fact that you got the code when many others including bigger youtubers did not one tells me that this will not be a truthful review. Hence why your negatives are "tip toed" around.
💯
Its the perfect gamepass game, not worth buying but worth the gamepass price.
As if all the features were just check boxes on a board checklist and nobody tested if it was actually any fun.
Thanks for your great reviews though, love the channel! Keep up the great work.
its great that there are so many games
@@ACGreviews Absolutely! Thanks for the reply.
Here it is just a pitty since I had a hope for more. But I only have time to play perhaps 4 titles to completion a year, so there are plenty of great games to choose from there. The competition is high to fill those 4 slots, since they compete with good titles from previous years.
Once again, thanks for your great channel 👍 Keep up the great work, love your reviews.
@teqfreak yep. This year actually stuns me. As I said in todays podcast its a 1 of a kind year and it will be very interesting to look back on it in a couple year.
@@ACGreviews As you said in the Baldurs Gate 3 review, this year we probably have gotten the game of the decade. Wow, I cannot remember being this hooked on a game since Mass Effect.
Agreed. After watching this review I went into starfield expecting nothing special, but a decent rpg. It was the worst RPG of this caliber I have ever experienced and I am not exaggerating. A step back from even Oblivion.
Hey, I made a video almost exactly about your intro joke about the Starfield bugs way back when the big gameplay presentation happened 😄
Why lie about performance? Benchmarks are already out and the game runs really bad.
That first terrormorph you fight in the vanguard questline with the beeping as it gets closer... oh man
Yeah until it goes down in 5 seconds and is totally harmless due to retarded "AI" (on very hard)
That was such a good mission.
damn acg with the huge hardon for this one! I mean, where are the bugs?? almost no mention of any issues at all?
He says the game has very good performance lmao.
@@npcsenpai1185 crazy right?? He was on a 4090 and getting 60 freakin fps. Wtf
with no RT he thinks 60fps is good? Amazing...I dont know, this review really seems very biased. @@nine9_abyss

Ya it was crazy barely any bugs. I even listed those I had. Very surprisingly good experience.
