  • Air to spring conversion in a Land Rover Dicovery 3 (2005 model)
    Some people are curious about what is involved in an air suspension to coil spring suspension swap, this video is a rough guide detailing what it takes to get the job done but it is not quite exactly a step by step how-to. But I hope you enjoy!

    I like the ability to control the suspension according to my surroundings that's why I bought the Discovery 3 even with it's sometimes pain in the butt gremlins. Cheers 🇬🇧 🍻

      The suspension control and transmision control modules are really well engineered, and if the customer is willing to spend the money fixing them then it's always my recommendation, I think the trouble with those systems really stems from main dealers not wanting to part with technical information. I pay for E3 Technical subsctriptions which is basically rebranded main dealer information, and if the information I need isn't there they'll request it directly from the main dealer which is awesome. But even then JLR are one of the few companies that just refuse to release some information. Makes it very hard to accurately diagnose complex systems which is a shame and is what pushes many people to go with coil spring suspension just to get it back on the road!

      Many people say the springs are a trade off and the ride is terrible but for this customer I thought the dunlop kit him proud and I've driven them with air struts and with mcpherson spring struts - never noticed a difference in the ride quality

    Really good video! How do you find the ride and handling on coils compared with air suspension?

    • @maxautouk
      @maxautouk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It has a slightly harsher return on extreme terrain (over 100mm potholes or deviations in the surface) but other than that I don’t notice a difference personally
      But I do think it has less body roll on coils!

    • @daniellloyd831

      @@maxautouk Thank you for the feedback! I really appreciate it. I do very little off road. I mainly have the car for its practicality. Currently plagued with suspension issues and looking into this as a way to continue enjoying the car with one less worry

    • @maxautouk
      @maxautouk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@daniellloyd831 you will lose some off-road versatility in terms of programs and ride adjustability but we have been off roading for twenty years odd without adjustable ride height with air suspension and have been just fine…
      It’s a divisive issue because so many people swear air suspension is vastly superior but most people I’ve spoken to haven’t actually experienced coil-over suspensions and air suspension so they don’t actually have any experience

    • @daniellloyd831
      @daniellloyd831 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@maxautouk All very good points. My feeling is, if this was a brand new car, I wouldn’t dream of ripping out the air system. However it’s now a 17 year old system and I have two options. 1) relentlessly pile money into the air system 2) swap it out for a system I may or may not use from time to time, for a arguably less versatile system that I’ve never used in the time I’ve owned the car. I really enjoyed your video though. Really nice and clearly presented

    Hi Mate, Great vid, thank you, going to tackle this myself as I am tired of spending money chasing air suspension, while I am there I would like to replace the pinch bolts and top bolts etc with new, £800 on new suspension so a few more quid on some nuts and bolts seems logical to me. any ideas of what I would need? a google search is hard to figure out exactly...

    • @maxautouk
      @maxautouk  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think if you got a few nuts for the strut tops that would be a good idea, other than that it's plain sailing the rest are big big bolts with coarse threads so should be OK
