- I tried most popular fast food meals to see how they impact my blood sugar. If you live with diabetes and would like to know what meal to have and/or if it's even OK to eat fast food as a diabetic this might be an interesting video for you to watch. It will help you decide what meal to order and what else to do next time you are in for a quick bite.

This video was really challenging to make for me. As I was testing these fast food meals, I was asking myself if I'm doing the right thing. My body can't handle eating like this regularly. So I'm really looking forward to getting back to normal which in my case is having fast food only on “special occasions”.

Honestly I unsub because of this video but that's unfair I will resub because you're a very smart guy
@@S10394 You're most welcome my friend!
@@tonystreehouse7269 OK. Sorry to hear that. But I'm not sure if I'm following... What is it about this video that makes you want to unsub? Just wondering. Do you have specific feedback you'd be willing to share?
brother, THANK YOU. your videos have really helped us with our 11 year old's recent T1D diagnosis. your hard research is greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much for your kind words my friend. Wishing you and your "little" one all the best! Don't hesitate to reach out if you need help with anything!
I am not diabetic…but it runs rampant in my family so I have always been proactive even when younger and watched my diet ..your channel is invaluable to educate people to also be proactive ☺️. Great job.
@@OpinionatedOG184 …thank you for the correction..
@corteltube Thank you fo saying that. It means a lot! I am glad that you find this valuable for prevention as well!
Thank you for being realistic and explaining this so thoroughly. I will recommend this video to friends who glaze over when I attempt explaining these things.
Thank you for your kind words my friend. This means a lot! Take care and thanks for sharing this video!
I always drink a pint of water with a tablespoon of white wine vinegar, about 10 mins before a high carb meal, which works really well for my pre diabetic state.
Will often have a packet of walnuts with me during the day, find a handful before a highcarb meal also helps reduce the spike.
and walnuts are good for the Gut too
Nice! Thank you for sharing these tips!
I am so very impressed that you concluded this presentation with all the method's and information for the viewers, the way you did. Your the best, thank you. 71 years type one
Thank you so much my friend. You are so kind!
Sir, for how long do you have T1D?
@@IamSovereign 71 years. I'm now 75 years old.
@@ron95754Thats amazing.
I was diagnosed with prediabetes, went straight on Keto the next day ( because my sister is type 2 and she sent me your videos, lol). I've lost 78 pounds and my A1c is back to normal....Thanks
Your videos have helped me a great deal. I was ignoring fat and did not understand why my levels stayed high for so long. My doctor said the level should come down 2 hours after a meal (I am type 2), and when I got my CGM I could see that was not what was happening. Your graphs over several videos show patterns more like mine and I now see that I also have to manage fat. Diabetes is so complicated and involves so many aspects of your life. Thanks for sharing your information with us.
Thank you so much for your kind words and sharing you experience as a type 2 my friend. Wishing you all the best! Don't hesitate to reach out if you need help with anything!
Amazing, just amazing… always thankful for your contents. I’m T2 since three years (I’m 56), still coping with the change… your channel is my number one goto. Thanks for being there.
You could reverse t2d with ketogenic diet.
Love the charts! So helpful. Eating out is the thing that causes me a lot of stress. Appreciate you being our guinea pig!
Thank you so much for your kind words my friend. I can relate to the stress part. I used to be the same but it got better overtime. Wishing you all the best! Don't hesitate to reach out if you need help with anything!
Thank you, I always look forward to hearing from you. I am in Jamaica 🇯🇲
Sending love to Jamaica!
very well done. You are helping many along your journey. Thank you for keeping your channel non-commercial, I'm sure most of your viewers appreciate it. Have you tried vinegar before meals ? I understand it helps reduce blood sugar spikes. As a part time scientist maybe you could do a test-video on the concept of prepping your body for carbs/sugar with ACV, perhaps it works in a similar way as taking insulin before meals ?
Thank you so much for your kind words my friend. Yes, vinegar is another super helpful tool. I talked about it in other videos btu you are absolutely correct this can help especially in a type 2 situation. Wishing you all the best!
In nutrition for health, failure is not only an option, but its a great tactic and tool.
I allow cheat days per month and cheat weeks per year.
Else, trying to never make a mistake will guarantee failure, frustration and quitting.
Don't let the perfect get in the way of the good.
That's a great insight. Thank you for sharing that my friend!

💯
I appreciate this video as I travel a bit for work and sometimes fast food is the option I have. These suggestions and information are handy
Thank you so much for your kind feedback my friend. I meant to stress the travelling element in the video because often times I eat fast food during travel as well.
T1 here. Big mac, no sauces. Fries with a little ketchup and zero sugar drink. Perfect. Predictable.
Ur right, its the sauces that suck.
I agree
T1 too, My go to is a double quarter pounder no bun with only cheese and mayonnaise. Regular fries and Diet Coke. I do great with it.
That's a good point about predictibility. Some of those fatty meals are definitely a lot less predictable sometimes! Thanks so much for sharing that!
@@zachazlett Thanks for sharing your tip!
Late onset type 1 here. After 6 years I know that I have to inject at least 25 minutes before breakfast otherwise I have a big spike followed by a crash around 11am. Chinese and pizza are challenging for me. Things have improved significantly since moving onto a pump a few months ago too - had to really push my GP to consider it though.
your kind words and sharing your experience and these insights from the LADA perspective my friend. Great to hear that pump helped you! Wishing you all the best! Don't hesitate to reach out if you need help with anything!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience! I had pizza this evening, always a challenge! Interesting finding on the wrap! I have swapped over to wraps this year, though always homemade and wholewheat wraps, because i can stuff them full of veggies and get more fibre in, compared to a sandwich. As you mention, its about the whole meal composition, rather than a single component.
I’m always learning! So thanks again as always for sharing.
Thank you so much for your kind words and sharing you experience my friend. Wishing you all the best! Don't hesitate to reach out if you need help with anything!
What about after 24 or 48 hours? The immediate impact is pretty obvious within 1 to 3 hours (digestion, absorption, etc) however, in my 50 years as a T1D, I noticed some carb heavier foods, regardless of fiber, can be corrected on the same day then see an impact the day after and have to correct more than usual the next day, sometimes 2 days after. I realize everyone is different - just curious if this is something you experienced as well. I do want to offer a suggestion, if you happen to be in the US, try Pita Jungle. I usually get the "Keto Tofu Platter" which has griddled marinated organic tofu, broccoli, cabbage-kale super greens, and turmeric cauliflower rice. I order this without the tahini though. It's pretty tasty, impact is very minimal (for me) and the turmeric cauliflower rice is a nice addition. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for the tips my friend! Good point on the 24-48 hour window. This is a bit hard to observe to be honest because there is so many factors playing a role!
That restaurant is nowhere near where I live. Sounds like a California or New York place.

very interesting approach, thanks for sharing
You're most welcome!
Im wondering if you have considered doing a video with a few fast food options with and without some high fiber foods. Ideally taking a blood glucose measurement before and after
I did not do a video specifically on this but I am almost certain that the high fiber foods will perform better from the blood sugar perspective!
Thank you so much for sharing this great tips! All the best for you ,stefan from germany.
Thank you!
Excellent information, as usual. Thank you.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing your findings on what we diabetics can eat at fast food places. I learned a lot from this video. Mucho thanks! 👍🏼🥰
Love these videos with your experiments. Thanks so very much for taking the time to do these and share with us. Love your honesty too. Good to know the impact and yes, sometimes to just dive in and enjoy is the right thing. I usually pick salads vs bowls to help avoid spikes. Rice, bread, wraps...all get to me.
Thank you so much for your kind words and sharing you experience Kathy. Wishing you all the best! Don't hesitate to reach out if you need help with anything!
Instead of a regular burger with bun, I look for the option of substituting out the bun for a lettuce wrap. Shake Shack and Burger Fi has this option. I only look for fast food places that has this option.
Carbs is what screws up my diabetes (Type 2). I have hamburgers but I only eat the meat and cheese and my diabetes is in the normal range.
Love your videos Sir
Thank you so much!
Eggs, greens with leaves, avocados, legumes..beans, chia seeds, fiber foods, oily fatty fish like Salmon, sardines, mackerel, Greek yogurt, nuts like walnuts and almonds, pistachio, hazelnut, broccoli, extra virgin olive oil, flax seeds, apple cider vinegar…2 teaspoons each meal, berries, garlic, squash ..acorn pumpkin summer squash etc.bitter melon, shertachi noodles (sp), thanks😀

You are amazing thanks for sharing
Good tips and especially the trial and error approach; it may be obvious, but I recommend taking brief notes of what works (and doesn’t) for next time you eat that meal.
Tom, You are the BomB!!!!
T2D, Just got my A1C down to 5.8 (down from 7.1, 12.8 before that). Strategy is huge, and having a go-to option at any restaurant can be a big help. Always gotta pay attention to how your body reacts to different things, and at different times. Something as simple as shifting the bulk of my carb intake earlier in my day I was able to lower my overall glucose levels. But everyone's body will react differently. Isolate variables, test, measure, and document.
Ill hive ya a restaurant option, just a big steak with a water or from McDonalds, 6 to 8 meat patties.
Ill also recommend watching Dr. Bernstein.
I usually get a Cobb salad from chik a Fila, Chipotle Bowl. No rice is a go too and start buck Americano and half and half with a dash of cinnamon and whip cream on top😊
Any Greek salad from restaurant and the salad bar at sizzler are ok. I try to keep my level 80 to 120 fasting and not more than 150 after meals
Great video!
another vice video THANKS
Another great video Tom although I don't eat a takeaway much but it is ok as a treat too much good food about 😂
Absolutely! Thanks for watching!
As always, a very nice and helpful video. Whenever you drop another video it's invaluable to my health journey. However, I'm confused about the question of saturated fat raising your blood sugar. One of the hot things going on these days for many people in including my wife :-) for blood sugar control is the keto diet - high saturated fat and low carb. Many of the influencers even say as a means of blunting blood sugar spikes is to add things like a full fat dressing e.g. olive oil, avocado oil, etc. to salads, meals, etc. Yet, your take is that saturated fats are specifically raising your blood sugar. Is there a consistent ethic in these recommendations? Or is it just how your body after years of analysis and experience responds to it?
Thank you so much for your comment. I believe there is truth in both of these arguments and maybe we all make a mistake of simplifying our argument and not sharing the other half. It is correct that fat slows down blood sugar spike caused by carbs. But it is also true that high amounts of saturated lead to reduced insulin sensitivity and increased insulin resistance in a longer time frame. Insulin resistance is a problem in all forms of diabetes because it negatively impact our body's ability to move glucose from bloodstream to cells where it is needed.
Love burrito bowls. Shawarma bowls are good too.
Taco bell cantina chicken, McDonalds breakfast tacos, Burger king chicken wrap w/honey mustard only raises my sugar 40/60 points according to my G7, just had coffee with creamer 40 points up 107 to 147.
pls do one version for the vegan eaters
Thanks for the tip and kind feedback!
Thank you for another great video! If you are ever in South East Asia, try durian (a fruit) and see how your blood sugar responds.
Thanks for the tip!
Is durian that stinky fruit they often prohibit in nice hotels? @@TypeOneTalks
Thanks!!!
You're welcome!
What I don’t understand is portion size. I have been diagnosed type 2 recently and I’m still grappling with the change in diet(60 years of eating whatever I like is hard to change over night).
Also I think the biggest ‘crime’ you can accuse fast food chains with is the amount of sugar in almost every step of their recipes.
You could just skip the carbs by eating at a fast food place like Buffalo Wild Wings and getting non-breaded wings. An additional plus is that they cook the wings in beef tallow instead of seed oils. You would have to take care to not use a sweet or sugar added sauce though.
To everyone reading this, I sincerely pray for that whatever is causing you pain or stress will pass. May your negative thoughts, excessive worries and doubts disappear, replaced by clarity and understanding. May your life be filled with peace, tranquility and love
❤
Thanks for your nice video, but nothing on the impact of drinking fluids before, during or after the meal, i use these as an added parameter for my meal strategies 😋
Thanks for sharing!
Most of those places will let you order your food without the bread and sugary sauces . As for Starbucks an americano with sugar free vanilla and heavy cream or almond milk .
I used to get the Chipotle burrito bowl as a salad, but I found out they _always_ put disgusting seed oils in the food, so I stopped going there altogether. If you check it out, you'll find that the saturated fat _in the natural food_ doesn't have the same effect that the seed oils and trans fats you're consuming have. As a bonus, they come with proteins that (in type 2) help lower blood sugar by prompting a healthy insulin response.
Physical activity literally pushes blood sugar into the muscles, which is what you're experiencing, since you don't really _have_ a significant insulin response, as a type 1 observer. Similarly, fiber doesn't lower blood sugar. It delays the rise in blood sugar caused by the other ingredients.
PS: The best fast food for diabetes is the McDonald's 1/4 pound burger patty, x 3 or 4.
PPS: As for balsamic vinaigrette, I make my own with the least sugary balsamic I can find and I also cut that with apple cider vinegar. I adjust for the lack of sweetness with liquid stevia. I'm planning to cut all the sweeteners out with the exception of allulose, because of its blood-sugar _lowering_ properties. Allulose is actually a sugar molecule that your body only absorbs by about 1/10, but it causes a liver response that has a net negative glucose effect. I'm type 2, so your mileage may vary.
nice , thanks u
Good video, and glad you pointed out how terrible most foods are for glucose control. The nutritional values are an estimation to what should be in the food you are eating, but will hardly ever be accurate to what you get when eating out. Healthy options are very limited at most places, so it can be frustrating as a diabetic. You can always request to remove or replace items in the meal to make it a better option.
Exercising before or after eating while out and about isn't convenient, but it's certainly possible.
Basically: if it's less than three grams of fiber per serving, don't eat it. Avoid fried foods since the fat will make glucose control difficult. Also, excessive protein will convert to glucose, which can be a problem there or more hours later for your glucose.
As for coffee, decaffeinated is the way to go or at least an option with less caffeine (since it will spike BS). Low fat, no sweetener options are the best, because even "sugar-free" will still raise BS.
Be careful out there and enjoy your life.
Thank you! Some people think all the fat is good for us.
Do you ever experience your blood sugar increase after activity
@@ProudCanadian-vv6bk The release of glycogen can happen with any exercise, but it's more common with resistance training. Glycogen is made in the liver, and stored in muscle. I usually exercise when I still have insulin on board, but if I don't, I need to take some while lifting. I am still learning about this, so don't take my word for it.
McD has an à la carte option. On rare occasions when I'm there, I order 3 or 4 Quarter pounder patties with some mustard. Not much spike this way although they must put some carbs in the burgar as this much ground beef at home has less to no spike. Other fast food places typically do this too. Anyway, stay away from carbs as much as possible. Humans did not evolve eating carbs over the 1+M years. Carbs were/are only for short term survival. You don't see fruit pictures on the cave walls. It is only in the last 10k years that carbs have been consummed, i.e. too short of a time for evolution.
Can you drink some fiber, like metamucil, to help with the sugar spike?
mcdonalds hasn't had side salad or even entry salads in a very long time, at least in my country.
Thanks for biting the bullet and eating all that junk! Whenever you're traveling sometimes you don't really have a choice on what you can eat. It's kind of a good thing that T1 ends up forcing us to be healthier! I've found the chik-fil-a grilled chicken sandwich with a Gluten Free bun usually works best for keeping my sugars in check.
Try not to eat heavy carbs like bread from cheeseburgers and thick crust pizza. I love fast food and I’ve found that I can get away with eating fried chicken or chicken nuggets without raising my blood sugar significantly. Make sure to count carbs if you can, keeping them at a max of 60 g per meal- that’s usually a safe number to avoid a significant rise. I rarely eat bread that isn’t whole grain whole wheat and avoid sugary drinks unless I need them.
McDonalds and Burger King both will hamburger without the bread. Sometimes I'll get a double whopper "a two patty burger" and take the bottom bun off.
I always get the chipotle keto salad bowl
Yummy!
Our McD hasn’t served salad since the pandemic
A good Butcher a good fresh organic green grocer end of .
Everything will go to levels one can control by eating more or less and using insulin minimal ...
Have a nice day
I’ll bring my own low carb bread and change out the buns or bread at restaurants, I have brought my own keto tortillas to change out the ones on burritos at Taco Bell and the breakfast burrito at Burger King. No love lost. McDonald’s will even put the Mac sauce on the side if you ask them, so you don’t have to use it, but it is quintessential Big Mac!
You left out the Double Double Cheese Berger Protein Style at In and Out!!
Try red wine vinegar and olive oil as a great salad dressing
Chick fil strips are a great diabetic food
Another decent choice is the plant based burger from Burger King. It's made on the same grill, so it tastes great. Does not spike the blood sugar, but it sometimes has a kick (like pizza) a few hours later.
Dieticians say that plant based burgers are worse
Plant based burgers often have so many additives that the labelling looks like a book
Thank you for sharing your eating experience and knowledge. I'd rather not eat the food you mentioned.
The best fast food for diabetics is none at all.
I've found the ketogenic diet to be the best diabetic lifestyle change out there.
If you want a hamburger, make a large lettuce, tomato, bacon avocado salad and grill/bbq your patty, set it on the salad and top with cheese. Make your own mayo, use a keto ketchup , mix them together to make a burger sauce and use that as the salad dressing.
There are also many different recipes to make several types of pizza crusts and ground pork rinds and almond flour to make fried chicken.
You'll never see another spike in your life.
When eating out? Hmm
The Mediterranean diet is better
I just put more meat in my diet and not to many carbs if I do have loads of carbs I just put a extra 10% insulin ratio in
Ya know whats even better therefore than even have the carbs? Just eating 6 of the patties.
In-N-Out Protein style burger. Basically a burger in a lettuce wrap.
I usually just order a small fry at McDonald's
Chipotle rocks!
Now I'm hungry.
Sorry about that my friend!
I like your discussion for Type 1 Diabetes. People with Type 2 Diabetes cannot eat carbs like you, we don't take insulin and live with the huge spikes that your insulin taps down.
You are right. Type 2 and type 1 are different!
There is junk & ok fast food. Chipotle bean burrito bowl is fine. Just dont eat the entire tortilla, theyre huge it is where the high glycemic carbs. It is hard not to over eat however. When I can limit myself to 1/2 a burrito, my BG will be fine.
I could not agree more!
Thank you for making this video! I'd contribute to you on patreon if I could afford it tbh.
I appreciate you talking about the topics that most don't go to. Nobody explores *How to eat fast food as a T1D*; they'd rather say *Do not eat fast food as a T1D*.
Despite this, it felt painful seeing you carry these experiments out with eating foods with no insulin. I respect the scientific method you're using here, but maybe consider taking a standard amount across different foods so you don't spike so high next time? Nobody wants your videos if you hurt yourself to make them.
Thank you for your kind words and support my friend! Stay safe!
I always knew it.
What did you know?
👏
The answer is grilled nuggets from Chick-Fil-A!
That's a good one! Thanks!
