They absolutely nailed it. And I think the Kia EV6 is just as good and offers a contrasting version of the vehicle. I hope it takes a good chunk of market share away from Tesla who have become arrogant and complacent in their Model Y and emphasize speed and battery efficiency over build quality, refinement and any attempt at attention to detail in the interior. This is a better car even if the tech isn't as good because tech isn't the biggest aspect of a car. Ride/handling, noise vibration, quietness is what a car features of a cell phone. I have no problem with the price of it. It cost what it cost and for this amount of quality and refinement, it's almost a bargain. Ioniq and EV is a brand of vehicles. Ioniq 2, 3 4, 6, 7, etc will follow as well as EVs for Kia. And some of them will cost less but of course won't be quite as nice as this pair of EVs. Congrats to Hyundai/Kia. Now, please, build a good amount so they won't go over MSRP like the Palisade and Telluride have (at least in the states they have).

The future has arrived! Hyundai definitely has produced a compelling EV option. It has a refreshingly original design, akin to a concept vehicle. Despite being pricey, it looks like they’ve got a winner. And unlike Tesla, Hyundai has an amazing dealership network in Canada (most cities in North America). Which comes in handy when you want see one, test drive one or servicing it. Thanks another electrifying video.
I used to own 2 brand new Hyundais( sonata hybrid and Santa Fe sport 2.0T) and now I own 2 Teslas (M3 and MY). The biggest reason I switched was no dealership structure of Tesla. From onsite test drive, online purchase and mobile servicing(that comes to your house) it's a much better experience with Tesla. Everybody pays the same price for the same car. That's the way to go. FYI, I love the looks and technology of IONIQ5. I might consider GV60 when it comes out.

The only issue is that I can't charge it overnight at my condo since they have no chargers, and unfortunately no plans to install any anytime soon. Guess I'll just have to visit the Hyundai dealer for a fast charge. hehe

I am also considering this car and wanted your opinion on how soft or hard the ride quality is and how loud the interior is if possible. Thanks in advance.
I agree Zack! The EV market is seemingly resolving itself to be for the upper-middle class as a niche product; no one is bringing something to market that's going to push prices down, that used to be a Hyundai specialty.
EVs are expensive because of battery is expensive. Give the technology another 2-3years. Keep in mind, the average price that we pay for a new vehicle is 41k.
I also believe the early buying EV households will be doing so as a second or third car, which by definition will be upper-middle class. They/we will also be overnight charging in our garages or on our driveways. And, if you’re maximizing the $7500 US Federal Tax credit, you need to be paying at least that much.
EVs are expensive to build so the price reflect that at the current stage in the market. All these early adopters who can afford it, will buy but those who can't will stick to ICE or maybe go with a hybrid instead. Prices will become lower likely near 2025 or 2030 as automakers has streamlined their EV productions and new advancement in battery technology can help. Or lower priced EVs use the previous tech to help keep costs low. At this stage, it is important for both the federal and provincial governments to offer incentives to help lower that barrier to entry so more people can choose a larger variety of EVs. The lowest priced EV so far seems to be the Chevy Bolt but not everyone may want that type of vehicle.
@@halderavik The price of pickup trucks skews that average $41k. The first gen Nissan Leafs used to start at $32,000 in Canada, and top out in the high $30s. I don't know why but I like this car a lot. Looks clean and well-built. I'm slowly coming around to the idea of EV cars. The problem is that an AWD version with the smaller battery would get less than 180 miles (EPA combined range) of range on AWD mode. More like 160 miles pure highway range. Take 70% of that to preserve battery longevity (and charging speed slows down considerably after 80% charge even if you wanted to charge more), 70% of that reduced figure for 75+ mph driving, and 60% of that reduced figure in deep Canada winters and you have a real world high speed, cold weather highway range of less than 50 miles (before extreme low charge/range anxiety warning) between charges. A lot of customers wouldn't want to pay almost $50k US (before federal credit) for that...
This is an impressive, compelling and viable EV. This or another Hyundai EV would definitely be my next car. Wish it had little bit more range though, 500kms and above.
just sipping my coffee and enjoying the review...agree...60 k for a vehicle is alot of $$..but think the price will come down some once more vehicles are introduced..that being said...I like it...like the styling of the Kia a little better but would say either one are a winner to me...thanks for the great job..and stay dry..enjoy all your work..be well..be safe
Great video! The Hyundai Ioniq 5 looks absolutely amazing! It is spacious, flexible and has a sustainable interior made from sugar cane components and crushed PET bottles.
A few of my friends have a Tesla Y and they rave about it. However, I have never been a Tesla fan because of their bland exterior styling and their basic interiors which without the big screen is quite bare. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the first Hyundai that I would consider buying and it is the first EV that I actually like (other than the Taycan). Amazing job Hyundai! Amazing video Zack and Andrea!
Great overview of a very compelling EV. I think you should do a calendar of thumbnails with Andrea, she always looks great! :) While the initial price is high, total cost of ownership for some EVs is comparable to many gas vehicles, given high gas prices and additional repairs and maintenance for gas or diesel vehicles.
Just a point on the regenerative braking/paddle shifters. I have a model 3 and I don't find I any need to "shift" regeneration levels. If I want less regeneration I just apply a little more pressure on the accelerator peddle. If I want full regeneration I take my foot off the accelerator. That way you are always able to vary the regeneration for changing situations. Personally I don't really see the need for the paddle shifters.
Thanks for putting this wet video together! With Toyota/Lexus recent announcement on their upcoming electrification plans and models, this segment is just starting to heat up! Hopefully with more competition, the prices will become more competitive.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 takes our Best Electric Vehicle award for the second year in a row because it continues to hit a near-ideal balance of attributes - even against newer competitors. It offers a roomy, versatile cabin within relatively tidy exterior dimensions; avant-garde styling that doesn’t neglect everyday practicality; and a simple, easy-to-use control layout that still packs in lots of useful technology features
Always enjoy your reviews. Pretty sure I based my first new car purchase completely on Zach's reviews and research back in 2013. I do think the water was muddied around specs because of the strange fact there are such different trims available in the US and Canada. Apparently my pre-order arrived at the dealership yesterday; I'm going in this week to confirm the specs as I'm not really sure what I'm getting.
what an awesome review! i remember Zack from the z95.3 days!!!! i ordered one and hope to get one within next 4-6 weeks, so wish me luck! love this vide, new sub and will watch all your videos!
You guys were in SD the same days I was there! Constant rain for at least 3 days, which then turned into a dreadful downpour all the way to LA. It was very, very unusual for SoCal.
I grew up in San Diego County. I remember when I was a kid, it used to rain down there a lot (80’s and 90’s). And I’m not exaggerating either. It rained a lot, and when it rained, it rained hard! I miss that about Southern California. Global warming I guess…
Excellent review but I'd be skeptical about a brand new entry to the EV market for my first EV. With that said, I'm a bit biased and will probably gravitate towards the ID.4 over this one. I don't think the interior alone is enough to win me over, but it's a damn good start. Love the choices popping up these days and looking forwards when the last ICE is sold.
The IONIQ 5 has been in other markets for almost a year now. Do you really think Hyundyai would knowingly bring a defective product to North America in its first totally new EV platform? Who do you work for...VW?
I understand your reasoning, but the ID.4 hasn't been in the market that much longer. The VWs are also known to have many bugs since the start, but also some hardware issues. Might have been fixed by now, don't know. That said, the Ioniq 5 does have some teething issues if you look at the user forums in Europe. Many have/are being solved, such as the slower cold temperature charging. I'm quite happy to see Hyundai keep developing the system, as I'm sure VW is as well. That is a very important aspect to look at when choosing a car these days: continued OTA update and development.
So rare to have rain in San Diego. Great looking car! I hope that the US will catch up when it comes to charging stations...they are as rare as rain in Southern California.
It was equal to a bad storm in Vancouver, we couldn't believe it. We had one day to film and that was the day we got. Oh well, just happy to drive this new EV.
So nice to see a review there the maneuverability of the hosts exceeds the vehicle 😃 Love your style. Full disclosure, I am expecting an ID.4 Pro AWD in the next couple months. I am not a huge fan of the Ioniq's DeLorean / Buck Rogers feel of this car, but would be strongly considering it if they had made the AWD available on the base model on Canada. The amount of choice we'll have in the next 5-7 years is going to be out of this world...
Thanks so much for sharing this Andrea and Zack! I've been waiting for the Ioniq5 review! Love the look, it reminds me of the Lancia Integrale, but not the same size. 😁
Great review looks like they are on a winner with this care , I did read somewhere that the four dots on the steering wheel is morse code for the letter H :)
A nice luxury electric car. I really think that manufacturers need to get a sub $30,000 model out there. Take out a lot of the unnecessary frills. I don't know why as soon as they go electric they have to pack in expensive add-ons that jack up the price.
@@halderavik not the case, it's only here in North America that it's a problem. In Europe and Asia, cheap good EVs like the VW e-Up! are already available.
@@ashton9699 those cheap EVs you are referring to won’t meet the US consumers expectations. Nissan tried that with the lower range and no frills interior Leaf for less than 30K. Nobody bought that car. It was a complete failure. The bottom line is you get what you pay for.
Thanks very much for the detailed review. We are actually trying to make a decision between this car and the ID.4. The annoying thing is due to the availability of these new EV's, there are no demo car for Ioniq 5 for test drive at the moment, at least in Vancouver BC. One of the biggest concern we have with this over the ID.4 is the lack of a rear window wiper. Was hoping this video would address this since it was filmed in the rain, but this was not mentioned at all. Wondering if the reviewer can kindly reply to touch on this. In some video reviews, which I believe, were filmed in Korea or Europe mentioned that the lack of rear wiper did made the rear window unclear in the rain. Love the features of other things of this car, but if the lack of rear wipe is really affecting the visibility of the rear window in the rain, this can be a deal breaker.
@@andreaspencer9813 indeed. You guys came in at about the worst time when it rained. The convention center is the best one I've been to. Cornada island is a great place to go too.
Great, honest review. Just a quick note though: You stated the mach E has a bigger capacity trunk, in Europe its 402 liters in the ford, 527 liters ioniq, also the back row slides 20cm giving about 620 liters if you only have child seats in the back for instance.
Zack, I completely agree with your viewpoint that we need an EV for the masses at a reasonable price. Perhaps a VW I.D.3 is an answer for that problem 🤔
I think the "EV for the masses at a reasonable price" will happen, but not for another 5-10 years. This industry is in its infancy and prices will come down when demand increases and the internal combustion engine is gradually phased out. Until that demand is created, the prices will remain stubbornly high. Just think back to the early years of the flat screen TV. They were asking $10,000 for the first large screen Plasma TV's!!!! This is where we currently are in the EV industry.
The tech is still to expensive for that. As production ramps up and innovation continues the price will come down. If it were possible they’d already have done it. You also need to factor in the difference in maintenance and fuel/power costs over the lifetime of the vehicle.
Great review, looks like a winner, especially at 44k for the base model. I’ve driven the iPace, Polestar 2, eTron, Ionic, ‘18 Leaf (avoid pre-‘18 Leafs, the 2nd gen is much better) and we have owned our Model 3 for 3 years. We also used to have a C-Max phev. Biggest complaint about the Model 3 is the crashy suspension, and the dumb door handles. I thought the Polestar was a substantially better car for less money, but the interior usability is terrible by comparison. The Model 3 would drive circles around it, but the quality feel and ride blew the Model 3 away. For 30K less, I’d take this over the Y. I’d take the Mach-E over the Y too. The only “if” is the charging network, don’t discount how important that is. 3rd party charging infrastructure is garbage by comparison.
Which 3 do you have, LR or the Performance? I had a MYLR with the 19# wheels, and the ride was definitely on the firm side, definitely not supple or absorbent, and I've heard the Performance version is downright harsh. Curious if it's the same with the 3LR and 3P. In any case, I think Hyundai and Kia are going to give the Y a run for its money!
@@CourthouseGuy1999 2018 LR with the 19's. We have 18's for our snow tires and it softens the ride (obviously) quite a bit. For the price, I think all Teslas should have the air suspension.
Couche-Tard (Circle K) is starting to put EV chargers at their gas stations and convenience stores apparently in BC first and moving east. Maybe you can find one
In Canada, it is a no brainer to choose this top of the line Ioniq 5 over the base model 3. The base model 3 now costs 60k and the federal incentive of 5k does not apply to it. The Ioniq 5 ultimate top trim is also 60k, is much bigger, has more range, is faster and on top of it also qualifies for the federal rebate of 5k basically bringing down the price to 55k.
Still not sold on ev . We do many drives per year where we would drive 600 to 700 kl per day. Still not convenient not if I have to stop for hours to recharge. Our trip from Lindsay On to P.E.I. would take an extra couple of days. Hotel cost and meals would make the trip more expensive that my CX 5 Turbo. Also finding recharge stations would be a pain. That may improve in 10 years or so in more remote areas. Maybe a self generating hybrid would be a consideration.
Car and drivers review says this can charge from 10% to 70% at a charge station in 18mins. That's comparable to any gas stop/rest break. Still not the same miles added vs a gas up, but getting very close!
I love the exterior of the Ioniq 5, but I like the interior of the Kia version far more than what is the Ioniq. I would love the Hyundai, however, since most of the time is spent sitting inside, it would only make sense to get the Kia version.
Hi Andrea and Zack, love your reviews and your chemistry. I always enjoy watching your videos. Would you happen to have a Subaru Forester review in the near future? Just wondering, thank you!
Hi there, thank you so much, really glad you are enjoying all of our reviews. There is a Forester review on the channel and we are getting the Forester Wilderness next week to review, that will be out in a few weeks.
Okay, we have one Model 3 RWD and a Model Y AWD and we are in the Toronto area. As an everyday commuter, I think RWD is just fine. As an EV owner, I prefer a longer range over AWD. $49k (54-5)for Preferred Long Range would my choice. Yeah, it's expensive but factor in no Gas, green insurance discount and no maintenance.
I don't know why everyone avoids saying this, but these are MPVs. Functionally they have the roominess, and practicality of a Ford C-Max or the new BMW 2-series active tourer, with all electric propulsion.
Congrats for the Koreans. Because of u, the rest of the manufacturers r now forced to follow suite. U guys did a great review. Still waiting for a blooper real. Happy holidays folks. Cheers from MTL.

Thank you so much! - Andrea
Great team. Real pros. Enjoyable and informative review.
This car's looks are growing on me, but I can't afford one anyway.
I think the rainy day seat switching trick would be a great segment for all your reviews 😊 Another great one guys…
Thank you glad you liked it! Can you imagine what we would look like switching seats in a smaller car. lol!
Headlights and tail lights definitely look futuristic. Not a bad design
Those 4 dots in Morse Code is “H”. So instead of putting Hyundai H logo, they put the Morse Code.
We had know idea, thanks for sharing!
@@andreaspencer9813 Wow! Direct reply from my fav TH-cam goddess!

Absolutely love the content on this channel, very very informative and without any click bait stuff

This is an impressive, compelling and viable EV. This or another Hyundai EV would definitely be my next car. Wish it had little bit more range though, 500kms and above.
Been waiting for you to review this car. Wooohooo😊
just sipping my coffee and enjoying the review...agree...60 k for a vehicle is alot of $$..but think the price will come down some once more vehicles are introduced..that being said...I like it...like the styling of the Kia a little better but would say either one are a winner to me...thanks for the great job..and stay dry..enjoy all your work..be well..be safe
Thanks so much!
A truly inspired design. I’m a Model 3 Performance 2020 owner. I think this will be my next EV.
Great video guys- wish it was $34-38K for base with FWD & AWD but probably the most tempting EV for me so far.
Thanks, glad you liked the review 👍
Great video guys.! Enjoyed the chemistry between the two of you. Very informative .
Thank you so much and we are really glad you enjoyed the review.
I like this new Hyundai!
Unusual weather in San Diego - perfect setting for why one should choose an EV
Best car reviewers on the web, bonus is you’re both Canadian! Keep up the good work
Wow, thank you very much!
Thanks! Will do!
Another great review! Definitely adding this car to my list of potentials...
Increase the length by a foot, make it a wagon and throw in a third row, that would be a total winner. Good video. 👍
Thank you, happy you enjoyed it.
I love the Motormouth videos, and Andrea is such a sweetheart.😍
Thank you so much!
Great review. Very interesting E option, yet at 3:45 in this episode, its an evolution of the VW Dasher.
Great review, thanks for including my question.
Thank you very much, so glad you enjoyed it. AND thank you for participating, great question.
The Ioniq 5 is also my top pick when I choose to buy an EV, interior is beautiful unlike the Tesla and other EVs that are poorly designed interiorly
Omg. Finally the black interior. So much better.
Great to hear!
I find your reviews quite interesting. Congratulations!
Thank you very much!
what an awesome review! i remember Zack from the z95.3 days!!!! i ordered one and hope to get one within next 4-6 weeks, so wish me luck! love this vide, new sub and will watch all your videos!
You guys are so much fun to watch!
Thanks for watching!
Interesting vehicle...great review Andrea and Zack! Got to watch the review of tesla.
Thank you! Tesla review drops this Sunday morning 👌
Love the content. Informative and fun as always, thank you!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
My wife and I watch your episodes together. You two make a great team. Oh, and she loves you clothing styles, Andrea!
That is fantastic!
This isnt Hyundai's first rodeo with EVs.
The IONIQ 5 has been in other markets for almost a year now. Do you really think Hyundyai would knowingly bring a defective product to North America in its first totally new EV platform? Who do you work for...VW?
@@garryford6439 Where did I say it was defective, you halfwit? Reading is fundamental, learn to read and comprehend before running your mouth.
My two favs!
Thank you! 😊
am hooked you guys do this very well....thanks
Glad you enjoy it!
About the four dots on the middle ofthe steering.
With the morse code, 4 dots stand for the letter H.
H for Hyunday.
this is the best looking ev by far that's not over 100k
Coming here a year later and look at the depreciation on these! Wow! Did not expect these to lose 20k in 1 yr.
Thanks so much for sharing this Andrea and Zack! I've been waiting for the Ioniq5 review! Love the look, it reminds me of the Lancia Integrale, but not the same size. 😁
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it!
I also see Plymouth Horizon.
AWD would have been nice on lower trims for sure. But the interior is nice. And I like the range. Pricey though 🤨
Great review looks like they are on a winner with this care , I did read somewhere that the four dots on the steering wheel is morse code for the letter H :)
Excellent review. Really enjoyed your video. Starting to get interested in EVs. Love Tesla's but worried about reliability.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
A nice luxury electric car. I really think that manufacturers need to get a sub $30,000 model out there. Take out a lot of the unnecessary frills. I don't know why as soon as they go electric they have to pack in expensive add-ons that jack up the price.
It would be great if Hyundai added a base model AWD option like they have in the US to make it more affordable.
EVs are expensive because of batteries. Give the technology another 3-4 years, you will see 30k evs.
@@halderavik I hope you are right. I feel like they've promised that for awhile.
Really liking the new Hyundai line up of cars as well as their Gneisses brand
There’s also a rear camera you can put up on the second screen. Well that’s what I saw on TH-cam anyway.
Welcome to San Diego! The greatest city on earth.
Beautiful city!
@@andreaspencer9813 indeed. You guys came in at about the worst time when it rained. The convention center is the best one I've been to. Cornada island is a great place to go too.
@@Victic005 I know, but we have visited before and had a great time when the sun was shining. 🌞🌞🌞
Take the id4 or Skoda Enyaq if your budget allows.
Wait until the Chinese EVs get to NA shortly.
The tech is still to expensive for that. As production ramps up and innovation continues the price will come down. If it were possible they’d already have done it. You also need to factor in the difference in maintenance and fuel/power costs over the lifetime of the vehicle.
The only thing missing on the IONIQ 5 is the rear windshield wiper. A crossover like the IONIQ needs a rear windshield wiper.
Love the look
I wish there was a front wheel drive availabilty with the 5. I have an 18 Ioniq blue, front wheel drive, its great. It helps in snowy states.
First time I actually like the look of a Hyundai. The styling is on point.
Couche-Tard (Circle K) is starting to put EV chargers at their gas stations and convenience stores apparently in BC first and moving east. Maybe you can find one
to be able to easily move to any side in front is very important in emergencies
Love this review!
What about the Kia Soul vs Nissan Kicks?
In Canada, it is a no brainer to choose this top of the line Ioniq 5 over the base model 3.
The base model 3 now costs 60k and the federal incentive of 5k does not apply to it.
The Ioniq 5 ultimate top trim is also 60k, is much bigger, has more range, is faster and on top of it also qualifies for the federal rebate of 5k basically bringing down the price to 55k.
Good video !!! Very informative !!!
Glad you liked it! - Andrea
06:07 4 dots is a morse code which means 'H'
We didn't know that, thanks for sharing!
This will be a hit . Hoping for a N model down the line
I love the exterior of the Ioniq 5, but I like the interior of the Kia version far more than what is the Ioniq. I would love the Hyundai, however, since most of the time is spent sitting inside, it would only make sense to get the Kia version.
The Kia is also more expensive.

Our Model Y review drops this Sunday at 6am PST, make sure you check it out.
I don't know why everyone avoids saying this, but these are MPVs. Functionally they have the roominess, and practicality of a Ford C-Max or the new BMW 2-series active tourer, with all electric propulsion.
