This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the Tesla Model Y and Hyundai IONIQ 5 compact electric utilities. The Model Y Long Range AWD has two independent electric motors with a 75 kWh battery. The Long Range model has 384 horsepower and 531 km/318 miles of EV range.
There is also a Performance model, which has 450 horsepower and 488 km/303 miles of EV range The IONIQ 5 comes with RWD and AWD options but we are going to focus on the AWD Long Range model as it competes best with the Model Y. It has a 77.4 kWh battery, 320 horsepower and gets 414 km/256 miles of EV range The Model Y offers a minimalistic interior design with an open and wide dash creating excellent visibility. There is no head-up display or gauge cluster, everything is controlled at the centre touchscreen. The technology is impressive in this Tesla, the touchscreen is responsive, quick and intuitive to use. Even the voice-commands are fast whether you are putting on heated seats or opening the tailgate. Your speed is located at the top left hand corner of the screen and the screen is positioned well making it easy to see and use. While the quality of the interior is no-where near the fit and finish of the IONIQ 5, the seats are comfortable. There are some soft touch materials in the cabin but quite a bit of hard plastic which scratches easily. The Model Y comes standard with a 15” touchscreen, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a black leatherette interior, power driver and passenger seats, heated rear seats, 5-passenger seating with an available 3rd row for $4,000 CAD/$3,000 USD.
If you prefer the white leatherette upholstery, it will cost you an extra $1,300 CAD/$1,000 USD. The Model Y does not come with ventilated front seats or Apple Carplay and Android Auto. The Tesla also offers features like Camp Mode and Dog Mode, you are able to shut the vehicle off and maintain the temperature that’s comfortable in the car. If you leave your dog in the car, a sign is put on the touchscreen letting everyone know you will be back shortly and the dog is safe. You can also watch Netflix and TH-cam if you want to watch shows while charging your Tesla and play games. Tesla is continually doing software updates for their vehicles as well. The IONIQ 5 has an eco-friendly interior and a smart living theme with integrated digital tech and flexible spaces to create an expansive and open interior. Sustainable materials are used throughout the cabin from recycled plastic bottles for the armrests, plant based yarns, natural wool yarns and bio paint with plant extracts. There is a moveable centre console that can slide back and forth 5.5 inches, this allows the driver to freely enter and exit the cabin on either side when parked in a narrow spot. There is also a driver’s seat with a relaxation function on the top trim, you can take a nap while waiting for a charge. The IONIQ 5 comes standard with a 12.3” touchscreen and a 12.3” digital gauge cluster, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, a power driver’s seat, a manual passenger seat, black-cloth upholstery and heated front seats. The top trim with the Ultimate package in Canada for $5,000 comes with all the extra features, like ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heads-up display, an 8-speaker Bose Sound system, wireless charger, a power passenger seat and a leatherette interior. This is also the first Hyundai to offer over the air wireless updates to the multimedia and navigation system.

The Ionic looks like a real car with a real interior . It definitely needs a rear wiper in my opinion . I drive 19 Kia Niro hybrid and am already sold on the brand . I don't buy the comment about having to explain about the Hyundai vs the Tesla , unless you're talking to young whipper snappers . Where I live Hyundais and Kias are everywhere . Teslas are for the rich people .

The only thing the Ioniq misses, is a tail pipe, engine sound and fake polution scent, then it'll be 5 stars.

Let me get this straight, Hyundai has a better exterior, interior, drives better and has a faster charge time. It also has a head-up display with augmented reality. And it costs $20K less before rebates (in Ontario you can get another $5 off with rebates). Hyundai for the easy win on this one.

You forgot the Tesla Y Performance has acceleration quick enough to give your passengers whiplash and fart mode. Those are earth shattering and life changing features that will put a perpetual grin on Tesla owners' faces.
Meanwhile, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 has to settle with ventilated seats, 360 camera and vehicle-to-load. Pffffttt. Useless...

Electrify America DC chargers are few and far apart. They are frequently either occupied or closed. They are more costly than Tesla's SC and a Tesla SC location is always open with between 8 and 16 chargers. If you like the Tesla network, get a Tesla otherwise only take short trips near your home.

I reserved an Ioniq 5 in March. I've been watching all the European reviews for months now, and they all like the Model Y better. I couldn't wait until some Canadians got behind the wheel! So glad to hear your votes go to the Ioniq 5... I can't stand your politics, Zack, but I do (mostly) trust your opinion on cars. Thanks for this. My car is at sea on its way from Korea... If you have small kids and need the space when carrying rear-facing child seats, kids gear, strollers, pack and play's, etc.. it isn't even close. Tesla has substantially more capacity. The difference of over an inch in the rear-seat room is the difference in 2 rear-facing child seats fitting or NOT at our heights (6'4" and wife is 6'). I have tried but can't fit a rear-facing child seat behind me in the Id.4 or even the Rav4 Prime which appear to be similar rear seat dimensions (39") as the Ioniq. I CAN fit 2 rear-facing child seats in the Model Y no problem. The cargo volume numbers compared are also a bit misleading. The cargo capacity gap is actually even larger than mentioned because Tesla's huge rear underfloor storage space that you can drop a carry-on bag into isn't included in that. Plus the front storage you can drop 2 backpacks into. Not to mention you can carry an EXTRA 2 kids in the Tesla on occasion if needed with the optional 3rd row. IoniQ just can't do that. I don't believe the infotainment/navigation is comparable either after watching many IoniQ reviews. Ionic tech appears laggy with poor charging/route planning integrated.. a generation behind Tesla. I do like the IoniQ looks and interior but not for a family with small kids and lots of stuff. The Tesla has much more performance, more range, substantially more cargo capacity, a much better interface for route planning, a vastly better charging network, better infotainment, and likely will maintain much higher resale value as well. I wish an established company would make an actual fully electric family SUV instead of all these hatchback electric cars that keep coming out. The Rivian R1S will be the first but it is just WAY too expensive and has an unproven brand/longevity history. A better comparison for IoniQ would be Id.4.. They are more similar in size, performance, range, infotainment tech, price... IoniQ would likely win that comparison hands down.

No matter what the hype of Tesla cult, its build quality and reliability still aren't up to traditional automaker standard. One can argue Hyundai is the upcoming carmaker in recent decade. But even their EV is appealing to those who never caught dead in anything fully electric.

Thank you for the informative review. I prefer Ioniq 5's interior comfort and exterior style over Tesla Model 3 or Y. If I were to buy Ioniq 5, I have a smartphone, tablet, and laptop to do my work online. I want a car to take me to a place in comfort and ease. I-5 looks and feels more like European autos than other autos from Hyundai, Kia, and/or Japanese models. Hyundai claims Ioniq 5 is the first model of E-GMP, so I am looking forward to test driving other models. I would also like to compare I-5 with US EVs that are coming out.

Dave W. I applaud you for recognizing and providing insight to people that on a whole electric vehicles are much more expensive. I still believe that to your comments plug in vehicles are a great option for running around town especially in the Canadian environment (cold weather is not a friend to ev’s) I currently own a 2017 Chevy Volt. Bought it used to really understand the electric vehicle trend. Love the car as it provides 80 plus kilometres in the summer and 70 to 75 in the winter plus 45 to 50 mph on gasoline at 115 to 120 kilometres on the highway.
I have put on 40k this year putting one oil change and snow tire change (2 times). The most reliable car I have driven out of the 40 plus cars I have owned. Is been fun the learn about and experiment with an electric vehicle. Your informative segments are great and helpful to everyone keep it coming. Thanks Dave

For those looking for a 2WD IONIQ 5, wait for the 2023 e-Niro. It's a bit larger than the existing model, it has (almost) the same dashboard as the Kia EV6, it has more power than the base IONIQ 5, it's cheaper, and it needs less kWh to run because the car is lighter...and it's a front wheel drive instead of a rear wheel drive (can be better in winter time).

Great review guys! Having owned a Tesla Model Y and looking for a replacement EV, I’m liking the IONIQ 5! We had a Tesla Model 3 and got the Y for long trips…HOWEVER, the ride was way too firm for a road tripper, and this is coming from a BMW guy…a real kidney rattler. Also, with that huge glass roof, the 2 zone AC is not adequate. Even with the aftermarket shade I bought, the temperature around the vehicle is so different that we couldn’t get all 4 passengers comfortable. I never paid attention to the 3 and 4 zone advertising on cars, but it’s a must! Also, the Tesla Model Y is NOT a luxury vehicle, plain and simple. It’s a tech marvel, but not a luxury vehicle. Limited AC, limited adjustability for seats, no CarPlay or Android Auto, no window shades, rough ride, noisy…I came out of an Audi Q7 to get the Model Y and it’s not even close…Lastly, the point that keeps getting brought up that I originally subscribed to, and that is, you don’t need a ton of range for 95% of your driving. While that may be true, unless you own another vehicle or plan to rent a vehicle, what do people do for that long trip? If you’re paying 50k for a car, I expect it to do EVERYTHING I need it to do, not just 95%…again, unless it’s a 2nd or 3rd car like a weekend 2 seater…With that, we sold our Model Y and got a RAV4 Prime and couldn’t be happier. But, since I am in a position to have multiple cars, looking for an EV for my local commuting needs. The RAV4 Prime’s 40-50 miles of EV range cuts it most of the time, but often, especially in extreme cold or heat, I need to crank up the ICE engine…only for upwards of 10 miles or so, but still rather not have to…so, IONIQ 5 and EV6 are on the list!! Thanks again!

I'll be honest, the Tesla appeal is not going to last once all these other brands pick up. Especially in price range. I would hands down choose Hyundai between the two. Nothing in the Tesla wows me other than Dog mode. For the way of the future, price is going to mean a lot to people. You want people to invest in electric cars you have to make them priced well.

One of the best and fairest comparison I've seen, touching on aspects that matter to those that work hard for their money and understand the "annoyance" and "value" issues. I'll be the first one to give Tesla a standing ovation for pushing the industry and the market place towards EVs and their charging network investment but I can't get over the fact that their car cost the way they do but their i) fit & finish is the pits ii) moody software iii) uncomfortable ride and mediocre material quality and iv) phantom braking issues. It's been a number of years now and these things continue to be issues. The time they spend on teenage giddy stuff like unrealistic acceleration and games could be spent on improving the quality. I'm old enough to remember American cars in the 70s, 80s and 90s where the quality of assembly are so poor. The continued problem with the final product seems to be a deep root corporate cultural issue where engineers are too arrogant to listen to the boring stuff while they focus their time on stroking their egos with quick development get the product out the door to tout "were' the first" mentality.

I was glad that you discussed the advantages of PHEV and regular hybrids. What you should discuss sometime is the relative advantages at a 'fleet' level as opposed to just an individual car choice. Every three or four electric car has enough battery to make 100 hybrids. In other words the first 3% to 4% of electrics cars take 3% to 4% of the ICE cars off the road with a corresponding reduction in emissions. However if those batteries were used to make 100% of the cars hybrids, you would get about a 30% emission reduction. This seems to complicated for governments to figure out as all these expansive electric cars they are subsidizing make far less impact than switching all cars to hybrids. Not only that, but in many cases the hybrid fuel savings will pay the difference vs. the straight ICE version in a couple years - no rebate requires to save money!

You have to have some sort of weird fetish if you think a Model Y is $20k better than the Ioniq 5. Not only is the Hyundai better screwed together, you also get a significantly longer warranty if things to go south. You can also get service and parts readily at any Hyundai dealer, whereas Tesla tends to stonewall complaints to redirect clients to an App (e.g. not a person) and flat out refuses to sell parts because proprietary technology and anti-right to repair.

Must say that Zach has the right conclusion that the Tesla Y interior really falls short of being the luxury EV buyers that it is aiming for. Comparing the Ioniq 5 with Tesla Model Y is like comparing the new Asus laptop with the new M1 Apple MBPro. Sure, you get a better bang for your buck, and quite frankly an even better OS (I like Windows more than MacOS) but I changed 3 Windows laptops while I'm still using the same Mac I bought in 2013. It's running now as well as it did 8 years ago. All the brand laptops are using an OS from a third party, kind of like the EVs are using a 3rd party charger. While the MacOS is designed for the unit they have, the same as the charging network is designed for the Tesla cars.
However, in the long run, you get a better user experience as a Tesla owner, you get the same consistency (sure, a little sub luxury, if you ask me) of the interior over all the cars, but.... it's much less stuff to fix over the years. Not the early model S, sure, but since they introduced the 3 and Y, the experience was a very stable one. Very constant updates and useful ones too. The range was increased 3 times over the air updates since 2019 on model 3.
It is, after all, a question of .. cult.. yes. Agree that Apple is using the same tactics, but there is stuff that Apple does that no other companies dares doing. They push the technology further in the future. They were the first who cut the optic drives from laptop. Everybody else followed suit, even if it took a while. They were the first to introduce the SSD in the laptops, now all the brands are doing it.
So, to come back from my computer analogy, Tesla is not perfect, but it's pushing the technology to the limits, innovating stuff where no other company could or would. Are you not aware that they plan on creating car frames with casting? Just watch a comparison of Tesla vs Ford Mach done by Sandy Munro.
Looking at the way the cars appear used to be the way to judge them, because they were all made in the same way, sometimes in the same factory. But, I'm sorry, Tesla is not made in the same way, so just looking at interior is not enough. That's why people are paying more than they should for these cars, because after 3-4 years they are worth the same or even more than what they paid for them. Even in your ad you show a Model 3 priced at 55900. Well, 2 years ago, that car was selling at 50000, consdering the incentives.
Yes, I'd say that my model 3 is far from perfect, and there are a lot of things I'd change, but I wouldn't buy another EV, even if it were 20k less.

Hi guys, I wasn't expecting an answer for my comment, and after reading what I wrote initially, I see why you thought this is maybe a little biased. But I promise you I'm not. I"m not "making bold statements" I'm mentioning the professional opinion of a reputable engineer, namely Sandy Munro, and known statistics. Please, look them up if you don't know what I'm talking about. And also, I'm not saying I don't like the Ioniq 5, it's a very good looking car, I'm saying it's a new car, and the quality of a new car has to be proven before it's assessed automatically. But before going into a longer polemic with you, choosing a car is always a personal preference. As long as you only need to charge at home, this car might be the best money can buy for its size. I'm only saying that the building experience of electric cars, which is somewhat different from internal combustion or even hybrid cars, is not with Hyundai, but with Tesla.
I agree in Canada they are all expensive.
However, my money only allowed the cheapest Model 3, so Ioniq 5 or Model Y are both above my pay range. On the website, Ioniq 5 might be 20 k less, but we won't really know until the dealers are ready to sell them to see the actual price.
In my opinion, the technology on the Tesla more than makes up the difference in price.
Almost like Apple software makes the price difference to any other Windows laptop (sorry to have to go back to the computer analogy)
But this is, of course, only MY opinion, it's not a fact. Some people prefer having buttons to control the "important features" in the car, to me, all on "auto" is all that I need.
Thank you for your comment and, I should have mentioned that before, thank you for a great review.

@@bytemark6508 I don't think you should just go with what Sandy says, as good a source as he is. Secondly, I don't feel Tesla has the same appeal as Apple. A lot of people that like Apple are creatives and like the design and aesthetics of Apple's products. Tesla is about numbers, efficiency, tech where Apple is almost about hiding the tech and about colors and quality of the hardware/software. I know they both have a cult-like following which I find unfortunate. But there are fundamental differences to the actual products and the types of people that like them.
I personally don't care about Tesla's batteries or anything like that. I care about mechanical quality and refinement and want a car that pays some attention to design details. That's where Tesla falls short for many people. That's not to say Teslas are bad but some of their fans truly overrate them.

The points made at the end about price and other options is so on point. With Hyundai being the 10th largest automaker (in revenue) and 17th by market capitalization (Tesla being 1st), they could have priced these way lower and really given other brands a run for their money. Personally I would rather have the government(s) give the manufacturer the incentive applied to the msrp price rather than the buyer have to qualify (some don't). The Ioniq 5 ($54K) looks great and what it gives is hands down more value than Tesla Y ($57K), but that price difference is still too high for some. And this is before a ridiculous dealer markup of $7K in some places for the top of the line trim. If one is paying luxury prices, might as well go for Genesis GV60. (Even though I find the Ioniq 5 exterior looks better).

Once in place is far away. The current non tesla infrastructure is absolutely pathetic. And no sign of govt funding insight at this time. I’m not optimistic the non tesla infrastructure is improving anytime soon.
Additionally legacy automakers have extremely low projection numbers for production. That’s pre chip shortage and currently.
Legacy auto makers sat on the EV transition so long they’re so far behind. Ford, VW, Hyundai, etc are at least 2 years behind Telsa before they’re pumping out EV numbers like tesla. And that’s for EV’s we know of - ID4, F150, ionic 5, that’s such a small selection to offer the masses if they’re going to over take tesla. Not until 2024 does ford expect production for the F150 Light to hit 80k units.
Those are just SOME of the things in the in play in order for legacy automakers to match tesla. AND that’s IF tesla just sits on its ass and does nothing.

The charging network is important, that stands out. The cars, IMO, don't. I think the Y is very space efficient but the ride quality, build quality and unimaginative interior design detail just doesn't do it for me. The acceleration also, who needs all that much acceleration? It's great that Tesla is so efficient but they really fall short in other areas of the car driving experience. Arbitrarily dividing cars into only 2 categories is a fallacy. Tesla buyers aren't paying more money for luxury. They are paying extra money for technology.
$70,000 for a car is a lot of money... but that could mean anything from a luxury car, to a high-powered workhorse diesel truck, to a kitted-out camper van, to a fully accessorized off-roader, to a super-uncomfortable, barely-street-legal high performance vehicle (like the Ariel Atom)... or a technology-focused car like Tesla. It really just depends on where that money is going, and it doesn't always have to go towards leather and cushioning.

I've little doubt, after 5 years of possession, the Hyundai will have long surpassed the Tesla in owner satisfaction.

I hope you don't have any problems with the Hyundai. I have a 2019 Kona Electric with the battery that can catch fire. Hyunda's solution is to limit the battery to 80% charge, that's right, knock 20% off the claimed range. With no climate control, the range is 180 miles on the highway, (out of a rated 259). I haven't even tried this in the dead of winter when the heater knocks another 20-30% off the range. Hyundai claims that they have battery replacements but WILL NOT DELIVER IT! I've dealt with three Hyundai dealerships (Mirak, Bill Dube and Newport Hyundai) as well as Hyundai's CSS department and NONE of them have delivered a solutions to "Recall 200".

Buy the car that suits your lifestyle or driving habits. The point missed by the reviewers is they BOTH are sustainable transportation reducing NOx and SOx smog generators and our health degradation like smoking does. An EV helps us all out.
