  • Welcome to The Late Brake Show's full review of the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 - the 300-mile true Tesla EV rival styled by Minecraft. We say Minecraft, but any 8-bit video game really. So is this really as good as electric car enthusiasts had hoped? Jonny seemed convinced by the Korean EV efficiency, the retro-future bold styling, massive cabin and boot space, and the charging/power output versatility.
    Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.

    E-GMP is the codename for Hyundai's Electric Global Modular Platform that the Ioniq 5 is based upon. This is dedicated EV as opposed to shared with piston models, like the Kona and Niro models previously (good as they are). Don't get confused with the existing Ioniq either - that's a much smaller car that can be purchased in petrol hybrid, PHEV or full EV form.
    4635mm long
    1890mm wide
    1605mm high
    3000mm wheelbase
    Longer than ID.4, shorter than Mustang Mach-e and 78 mm longer wheelbase than a full size Range Rover!
    Boot space 531L + 57L froot (24L if AWD optioned)
    Boot space rivals:VW ID.4 = 543L, 1575L seats down
    Ford Mach-E = 402L + 81L (froot), 1420L seats down
    Nissan Ariya = 468L (2wd model)
    Much of the interior is eco-friendly (saw this many years ago on the first generation Kia Soul EV) and uses sustainable sourced materials, recycled PET bottles, plant based (bio PET) yarns and natural wool yarns, plus eco-processed leather with plant based extracts and bio paint with plant extracts.
    400 or 800v charging capability supported (world first), The IONIQ5 also can rapid charge up to 380kW, so although much of the UK isn't there yet it is ready. Theoretically it can can charge 10-80% in 18 mins at this level. Or get 100km of range from 5 mins of charge.
    Two batts, two or 4wd:
    Two battery choices (similar to its competitors): 58kWh or 72.6kWh
    Two electric motor layouts - either RWD or AWD, the latter having two motors.
    Best performance is the 72.6kWh AWD with 225kW and 605nm of torque = 5.2 0-62
    Longest range car obviously has bigger battery and 2WD for up to 480km range - or 300 miles WLTP.
    All cars have a top speed of 115mph or 185km/h.
    Hyundai's V2L (Vehicle 2 Load) means you can use an external or internal plug socket to power things, charge e-motorbikes, or even other electric cars. This could be just what we need for some distanced entertainment in 2021 (and beyond?) 3.6kW output sockets. There's also a socket inside the Ioniq 5 (between rear seats) and a 15w fast charger for mobile devices.
    Prices are not confirmed yet, but the ballpark is looking incredibly promising. Expect the Ioniq 5 to start around £36k and for the big battery 4wd launch edition (as tested) to be £47k. With all that space, charging innovation, unique styling and performance (not to mention unlimited mileage 5 year warranty) Jonny may have whispered that he would have an Ioniq 5 more than any other EV right now.

      owned a Hyundai i20 Active car which I bought in august 2017 and since the beginning there are a lot of issues with the car paint and ac especially, whoever person I met and whenever we discuss, everybody having these two common issues. Just after 2 years, my ac failed where I have driven Maruti and Ford cars for more than 10 years and there was not a single issue with those cars during the entire span. Hyundai is the worst with this quality. Need your support to take it to Hyundai forum where you can get some solution.

    No idea this even existed. Absolutely love it! So refreshing that non European brands aren't being driven by the dull cardboard cutout styling norms of the European brands and are daring enough to put a bit of individuality into their cars.

    • @nielsie86
      @nielsie86 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      By European you mean mostly German right? And by cardboard cutout you mean the “family face” that most cars have now I assume. It’s such a shit that Audi, VW, porsche, BMW and all those brands don’t give you any time to get used to a model. Every year they make them look even more fucked

    • @CyAn-S
      @CyAn-S 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Well German cars have a brand identity and loyal customers. So they can't alienate them too much. BMW tried to shake things up with the new 4 series but it backfired. Many classic VW buyer also dislike the new ID. range because it is not traditional VW styling anymore. German car's strength lies in the restrained, classy and maybe somewhat sleepy styling. That is the whole point. Korean cars have been all over the place like they have an identity crisis, sometimes they nail it sometimes they mess up. Japanese cars are either shouty and weird to some (Toyota, Lexus and at times Nissan) or just dull and too functional (Subaru). You have Mazda too but that brand reminds me Alfa Romeo styling wise, which is a good thing. French cars tend to be quirky (Peugeot, Citroën, DS, Less so Renault, which is kind of German sometimes). It is kind of how they operate, and that is fine.
      I know tons of people that love how German cars are not too shouty all the time or quirky/strange/revolutionary in their styling. It is what makes them desirable and is some way elegant. It is a strong brand identity, You always recognise a BMW, you always recognise an Audi or Mercedes. Why do you think Range Rovers have always had the same type of design, why do you think Mercedes has looked the same for over a whole decade? It is because that is what Mercedes and Land Rover buyers like. Don't shame them for their tastes.
      It is not about begin daring or not, it is about understanding your market. And the Premium market is very different from the Mainstream market.

    • @TheTimmyc123
      @TheTimmyc123 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@CyAn-S I'd argue that in recent years say the last 10 years, German brands design language/identity has become weaker and weaker as they've all started to merge into one another. If you take the badge and the main grill off the front you're left with mostly the same ingredients; slim, wide grille at the front flanked by two oversized fake air intakes and again mirrored on the rear, people talk a lot about the hofmeister kink being a strong bmw feature which frankly is tosh as most if not all German drands and more have adopted it. Design should always look to move forward and advance regardless of making people feel alienated, I don't buy into the safe styling thing at all, I commend BMW for the front end of the new m4 & m3 as its beautifully designed and its still clearly bmw if not more so now than it was before. Unfortunately today people are far to easily influenced into what to think, Their first exposure to these designs if of some cheap journo's headline like "new m3 ugly grille", they probably don't even think it's ugly but they just want to get clicks and jiews by being controversial and before you know it everyone has jumped on the bandwagon before taking the time to actually form an independent opinion.

    • @CyAn-S
      @CyAn-S 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@TheTimmyc123 Hey I wasn't stating my own opinion. I just know what German car brand fans want and like about those cars.
      Also I disagree with your statement about the merging styling. There is a word for that. Trends and to some extend technology and laws.
      Cars in 1910-40 were all swoopy and all had round headlights, flared fenders and similar greenhouses. often loosely mimicking horse carriages.
      1950-60 styling (at least USA) was all extreme with fins and large body work for no good reason other than styling.
      1970 was kind of a transition period so it was all over the place.
      1980 was all squares within squares and straight lines. And so on.
      1990-2010 was all blobby and often featureless. IMO the most boring era for car design.
      in the 2010's - Big grilles are popular, The side fins as well (both for aero and styling) creases in bodywork is a trend as well in some way. Certain body shapes, especially in Crossover/SUV land are similar because of regulations and aero needs. Coupe-SUV (E-tron sportback) or lifted hatchbacks (Cupra Formentor) are trending, so many brands make those. And those follow certain design rules and trends as well, like the floating roof design trend.
      So yeah all cars follow similar trends, but they make the difference in the details, not just the concept or the shape. Basically like it has always been throughout history.
      For example how something like light systems are designed and used nowadays in a fun and interesting way to give a brand a signature in some way. You know something is a Peugeot, Renault or BMW because of the rear light design or the front end DRL shape.
      Sorry, but a Mercedes looks so different from a BMW or Audi, that is is almost laughable that you tell me that you can barely tell them apart (not quoting you). That key items like the "Hofmeister kink" change over time is only logical. Even the c-pillar of a Golf has slightly changed shape over the years. Even the German cars need change here and there, but they do, on purpose, change very little each iteration. It is rarely a revolution and usually an evolution in design. And if you don't like that approach, German cars are likely not for you. And the fact that you like the new BMW M3/M4 grille shows that you like revolutions. I don't mind the grille of the M3/M4 that much, but I easily prefer the front end of the M340i (normal 3-series). Because it looks more "BMW" to me, effortless, elegant, not try hard, but strong. Meanwhile the M3/M4 front ends are a bit boy-racer, try hard, angry fish. Kind of what you expect from a Japanese brand.
      As for me I just like cars that I think look good. I could care less about the brand. I think Mercedes, BMW and Audi all make very good looking cars, but also boring/ugly cars at the same time. But do I see that they are all completely different in terms of styling and identity? Definitely. I could distinguish a Mercedes from an Audi from a mile away.
      Also about the influence. That is true. People follow hype trains and the opposite. That is how everything works these days. But in reality there are more people that think differently from the internet crowds than you think.

    I love the look of this thing, it’s bigger in person than in pics, it’s a throw back to the 80’s and their Pony model which I think was their first import car.

    The Lancia Delta for me is my dream car, the fact that the ioniq 5 looks like it, it's major selling point. I love the look of it.

    I can definitely vouch for Hyundai/Kia's quality workmanship, at least of late. They have improved immensely since the Pony debuted in the Canadian market in the mid eighties. I have a 2016 Kia Soul EV+ - my first Kia or Hyundai and also my first EV ever - and every switch, dial, lever, hinge, knob and button has a solid no-wiggle feel to it. It is smooth, quiet and as powerful as it needs to be (it feels WAY faster than its specs, especially from zero to about 45 mph) and is a pleasure to drive. And this is true: Every single person who has ridden in it has stated that their next car will be an EV. Maybe they would say that with any EV they ride in, but in any case I'm happy to spread the word!
    By the way, I bought it used last year with less than 18000 miles on it for under $13000US, with one owner and in basically new condition. There are LOTS of great deals to be found in used EVs, starting at well under $10,000. You won't regret it!

    Looks like a VW Golf and what VW should have made. Like a proper cool hot hatch. Actually in the side profile it could be the big brother to the Honda-E. Which is great for Hyundai if those are the connections and associations my brain is making.

      Hyundai seem to have an "unnecessary vent deletion department".
      VW Group, take note?

    Great review as always.
    You mentioned the Lancia, but from the moment I saw this car, I saw Alfa Romeo SZ design cues, particularly with the headlight design 🙂

    Judging by its range, size, room space, frank and boot I suggest it will be good car to use as taxi.

    19:07 most inteeresting part for me! edit: comment made prior the twist in the end!😂 the feature is quite warm, not too hot as it could be as V2G, like a small capacity Powerwall
