FULL DISCLOSURE: I have heard this song before, I am very familiar with the studio recording of it. However this is a live performance. Therefore I will NOT be scoring, evaluating, reviewing, or reacting to the song itself in any way. I will ONLY be scoring, evaluating, reviewing, and reacting to the LIVE PERFORMANCE. As for the lack of "stage presence" - as I understand it this "official music video" was shot live, but in a studio setting - no audience. So that could kinda explain why they weren't getting into a normal live "stage presence" kind of performance.
Alex Lifeson is my favorite guitarist because he's so versatile. He can do hard rock, metal, acoustic stuff, progressive stuff, New Wave and he's played some amazing shred solos. Truly an inspirational player.

But I agree with the score in the sense that a great song doesn't always translate into a fun or engaging live song, even if performed just as intended.
Having said that, I agree with giving as high as an 8.0 because the performance itself is so impressive.

Ahh, Mr Heretic! This strict adherence to your reaction code of honor is ever refreshing & entertaining. Neither understated nor over the top, simply you being you with just the right amount of Darth Vader & Mel Brooks (Harumph!) to spice things up. As a body of work, compared to other reaction videos, for sheer entertainment value, I give your videos a 9.2. For the depth of knowledge & intellectual rigor with which your videos are infused, an astounding 9.8! (Exceeded only by Professor of Rock & Rick Beato, imo). Thus, a composite score of 9.5. In the rarified upper strata of the best that have ever been made. I stand by it. Keep up the good work, sir! I love ya, man!

8.0 Is a fair rating and you had a good reaction. It's not the best live song(not a lot of showmanship when you have to worry about playing the song right), but it's always great to hear. Rush rocks!

just realised i have Hemispheres on vinyl. got it from a crate of vinyls my friend received from an older gentleman that lived in his apartment before my friend. guess i'll give it a listen!
And to think I used to play this back in 86 with my eyes closed (Almost) LMAO!!! And YES, my drummer actually became a REAL professor at University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business... Props to Prof. Americus Reed!!!! Don't believe me... look him up!!! Ask him about "SPEAR"....

Listened to a lot of Rush in my mid teens. Doesn't everybody? Still go back to them from time to time.
Impressive
As others have said this is not in front of an audience, but it is done live as a video.
Compositionally, I think this is one of the greatest rock creations there ever was. Apart from the sheer technical difficulty of it, their use and repetition of themes is genius, their dynamic contrast and meter changes are sublime, and the integration of the virtuoso performances is unbelievable. I think your rule - having known the song not being able to take the songwriting into account - is arbitrary and meaningless. This song stands the test of time, and you could hear it 50 more times and the quality of the writing will never be any less. And finally, the "boring" stage performance is as much a function of the poor filming as anything. Watching Neil's head while he's live performing those fills is nothing short of senseless.
Yeah, it was studio live. Probably as a promo or “proof” for the suits. Even though they weren’t “performing,” they were definitely having fun.
I would recommend “Headlong Flight” for a Rush reaction. Brings back that brute force Rush owned in the late 70s. Maybe that one flew under your radar? 😫🐷🐷
Should have watched the Time Machine tour in Cleveland, it was the first encore song.
The 70s was a different time when it came to stage presence. Bands were experimenting and coming up with more and more difficult tunes to play. Even Neil Peart says he writes his drum lines to challenge himself. That being said the crowd rarely cared about interaction back then and were usually in a different state of mind and lost in the music to care about interaction.

Idk man I’d say 2112 and Natural Science are incredibly difficult to play live as well
David, your perception of what your seeing is skewed slightly in this particular instance and your score is therefore probably inaccurate. Let me explain:
All 3 songs ("Circumstances", "The Trees", and "La Villa Strangiato") on the B side of "Hemispheres" were filmed LIVE on the floor without an audience. These ARE the Official videos and they are "live", but they are not "performances". The Power Trio were so good they could just do whatever they wanted... and did.
Hemispheres is my favorite album by Rush. And The Trees is my favorite song. When I was on college radio, I put on side one of Hemispheres and went out in the game room and shot pool. Kind of like the 70s DJs that would put on Inna Godda DaVida and go smoke.
