    This is what being 'IN THE ZONE' means. They played this effortlessly. This is the third piece of the fantastic trilogy, along with Broon's Bane and The Trees. A little perspective: they did all this in their mid 20s. This is arguably the greatest live performance of any band, of any genre, anytime, anywhere. No band with less than eight people can ever dare to dream to replicate.

      Hopefully more live Rush to come, I have a couple of requests for "Freewill" live, and a medley of "By-Tor, In The Mood, 2112", and some others live as well. I just can't do an honest reaction to anything studio because I've heard every song they've ever recorded, I've even played a good number of their songs as well. As long as it's a live performance, I can react to it.

    I'm a musician too and love your reviews because you've played the music! You caught the Alex hand switch from the 12 string to the 6 string that no one else sees so I just love it. I have to say an 8.7 for this performance seems low to me... but it's your reaction so call it the way you see it. Regardless, this was a great performance by a young RUSH team and I always love watching it. Thank you for doing the reaction video!! :)

    • @THEDavidHeretic
      @THEDavidHeretic  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Listen to what I said in the beginning, and what I said before I gave my score. The song itself had nothing to do with the score. The 8.7 was strictly for the visual aspects of the live performance. Stage presence, stage energy, stage interaction, crowd interaction, and showmanship.

    Not only did Geddy have a set of Taurus pedals next to/in front of the main stage mic, he had one under the keyboards, and Alex had a set too. Neil has wind chimes, glockenspiel, temple blocks, triangles galore, a bell tree, and orchestral tubular bells (besides the drum kit). I saw this tour (1981) and it was mind-blowing. I've seen Rush multiple times and the only part I ever saw tracked was the 'rap' lines from "Roll the Bones".

  • @sealiferr
    @sealiferr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The roadies would load the washer/dryers with t-shirts before...during sets...and after the show...and then throw them out to the audience. The washer/dryer thing came about when Getty felt Al’s amps were leaning the stage to one side...so Getty wanted something to even the stage out and it stuck. A testament to the band’s sense of humour.

  • @GM-MarkOfExcellence
    @GM-MarkOfExcellence 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The Washer and dryer (and later chicken rotisserie) are because back in the day, the band had to bring their own stacks. As technology progressed and as the band got larger arenas, they just used the auditoriums sound system directly and maybe had monitors, and eventually earpieces. But Alex brought his stacks out anyway because he just couldn't get into performing without them being there. So to make fun of him, and to balance the stage, Geddy added the washers and dryers. Later on a multi-chicken rotisserie was added on Ged's side And Alex added a popcorn maker.
    You'll see in this live vid (bass player will love this) their chicken powered time machines, and the roadie that feed it some chickens to keep it running

    Actually those -chimes” are tubular bells and he also plays a glockenspiel during this song. (Metal xylophone). Nice catch with switch from 12 string to six string. He also played that same section again but does it on 12 string instead of the six string. Regarding Geddy,s double neck . Yes it is a six string underneath. Unfortunately they don’t really show him play it in this song.. Saw them in 82 and 83. That was them at their peak. Never saw them again after that unfortunately. To this day the Moving Pictures tour was the best concert I’ve ever been to

    Geddy double neck is a Rickenbacker 4080. It started life as a 4 string bass top and 6 string guitar on bottom but it got so beat up over the years he had it restored. The person at Rickenbacker that restored it also converted it to a 12 string setup on the bottom neck.

  • @jamzales
    @jamzales 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Oh it's a Rickenbacker 4080. 4 string bass 12 string bottom neck. It was originally natural wood tone in color and a 6 string guitar but it was refurbished. The guy that did the work converted it to 12 string. It has a nice spread in Geddy's Big Beautiful Book of Bass.

    Lorne "Gump" Wheaton was Neil's drum tech. He has a video on TH-cam on the process of setting up the kit for a show. Interesting stuff. You'd love it. (BTW, one of Neil's many nicknames was "Bubba". So that duo backstage was "Bubba-Gump", and the little room set aside at each venue with Neil's pre-show warmup kit was referred to as the "Bubba Gump Room".

    You are the first reviewer of Xanadu that I've seen to truly appreciate - and comment upon - how utterly incredible Alex's switch between the 12 and 6 neck is. At the 11:32 mark he switched from the 6 to the 12. Take a look.... It appears that he has to actually turn off one neck and turn on the other before playing. All while being true to the spirit of the song....

    • @THEDavidHeretic
      @THEDavidHeretic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      He basically does exactly that. He turns down the volume knob on the 12, turns up the volume on the 6 and goes back to playing on the 6...all in one fluid motion. The coolest part, he made it look so casual....just another day in the office.

  • @rattan3793
    @rattan3793 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Geddy's doubeneck is a Rickenbacker 4080/12, bass over 12 string guitar. He switches to the 12 string during the last 2 minutes of the song when Alex starts his ending solo but it's not covered very well in the video. The video coverage is better in the official Xanadu music video from 1977 even though they're just miming to the studio track.

Hey, you said that you saw the R30 tour, live, but you have some difficulty recalling that show, right? Well, I would recommend that you do a reaction to the R30 opening medley. The video is called “The best intro ever”. They do through a mash-up of 5 or 6 songs and the go into Spirit of Radio! That is a great video and it totally rocks!! The washer/dryer, or the chicken rotisserie one tour, was a visual joke by Geddy. Since he went into the board, he didn’t have a huge wall of amps behind him like Alex did. It left a visual “hole”. So Geddy filled it and they had some fun with it tossing warm t-shirts into the audience.

    David in response to you saying you didn’t understand the washer dryer thing. When Geddy stopped using speaker amps and had his sound go directly to the speakers, he said his side of the stage looked empty compared to Alex’s huge amp setup. From my understanding, the washing machines were also a reminder of their early touring days, this band was pretty much broke until after 2112, no one could be paid to do the washing for them. As a youngster seeing them on their Caress of Steel tour, self called "Down the Tubes" by Rush I imagined them as other rich rock stars, weren't they all lol, but in reality a free place to sleep was welcome.

    • @THEDavidHeretic
      @THEDavidHeretic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never give 10s. 10 signifies "perfection". If one reaches perfection....then what? They stop trying to improve, they stop trying to hone their skills....because there's no longer a reason .
      In my philosophy perfection should always be unobtainable. We should strive for it, we should work for it, we should always try and make it the goal. That way we do continue to improve and grow. Not just in music, but in all things in life. The only way I'll ever give a 10 is posthumously out of respect.

      Honestly? The only time I'll ever give a 10 is out of respect posthumously. 10 signifies "perfection", and I follow a philosophy that perfection can never truly be obtained. The reason being is, if you ever manage to achieve perfection....then what? You'll stop growing, you'll stop trying to improve, you'll become stagnant. I believe everything can be improved, everything can become better, you should always strive to become better. So as long as the artist is alive, there's always the possibility of improving, and the goal of perfection to strive towards.

    Find/watch the"A Show of Hands" concert, you get better shots of the pedals being played. Both Alex and Geddy play the foot pedals depending on the song/part. Alex actually also has played keys on stage on/off throughout the years, again depending on the set list, although he REALLY doesn't like it, LOL (at least in an "inside-joke" perspective). Someone else has probably commented as such as well, but just in case. Also if you search TH-cam, you can find a relatively recent "Alex Lifeson's Stage Setup (one by him one by his tech, of the same rig ironically) that he actually shows his pedal "board" selectors (more like command center) as well as the pedal synth triggers (which they used to "play" (used to be a Moog pedal board, now its' a "trigger" board layed out the same, but same results, they either trigger, or directly "play" with their feet).

    I remember this show like it was yesterday. This was the opening song after the intermission and I was shocked by how awesome it was. They did play it on the R30 tour but it was abbreviated. R40 version was much better. Yes, they used midi's for the Vapour Trails tour and later. They may have started a little earlier but I am not sure on that.

    Geddy used Ricks, Fender Jazz, Stienberger, and Wal. Wal kinda look like the G&L L-2000 due to pickup placement. Totally different animals though Wal was a very midrange tone used from Power Windows through Roll the Bones. I use all G&L basses. Chris Squire made the Rick sound great and REM had it in some tunes and sounded good. Biggest PITA bass to set up ever made though.

      I also remember Geddy using those Steinberger basses....I tried one of those things once, was not a fan of them at all. A little too small, and the way the bass was designed you HAD to use their strings because of the double ball ends.....felt kinda sketchy to me since I loved using Dean Markley strings at the time.

    Prior to Power Windows Rush did not use samples. You of course had sequencers in the chorus of the Spirit of Radio, Vital signs from Moving Pictures and both The Weapon and New World Man off Signals and then Red Sector A from Grace Under Pressure. The sampling took hold from 86 forward, but even then, samples were triggered live in real time, by the band. As samples are naturally going to be fixed in their tempo, they need to be hit in perfect time, so your tempos need to be rock solid if you’re trying to stay away from train wrecks on stage. Rush were masters.

    Ok, washing machines was a joke between Geddy and Alex at first and then turned Int a running joke with Chicken Rotisserie, Washing Machines, Popcorn Machines etc...
    Geddy decided to run his sound through the house and got rid of his amp stack, but Alex kept his wall of speakers so as a joke Geddy didn't want his side of the stage to be empty, so the road crew started setting up wahing Machines and other large appliances.

    Here's a live performance of Xanadu in 2015, and is actually the last show ever, at the Forum in Inglewood. Not my recording, but I was at that show, and it was the 3rd time that tour I got to see them, but in your free time, check it out. A few minor differences between shows. Essentially, they were actually playing the same exact set up as this concert, was done chronologically, starting from the newest, going back. Each piece of equipment and stage were switched eith changing of albums in their set list. Lots of work for the roadies every night for sure, but what an incredible show. Till it was just an amp on a chair eith a microphone, sniff sniff.
