The sheer brilliance and talent of these 3 guys just can't be overstated. (IMHO).
This is their first instrumental piece and really showcases their 'Go big or go home' mentality! 🤯

It just blows my mind how Alex Lifeson is always left out of the conversation as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. He’s in my top 5 for sure.

Rest assured, your favorite guitarist list Alex in their top 5.

Jimi always sounded like Jimi. Eddie always sounded like Eddie. Alex sounded like whatever the song needed him to sound like.

Could not possibly agree more brother I cannot understand for the life of me why he isn't up there higher on those lists. Some of the people listed ahead of him are laughable!!

This song was based on a series of nightmares that Alex Lifeson the guitarist had. Absolutely Brilliant!

Probably my favorite Rush song. I can listen to this every day for the rest of my life.

Hands down my favorite RUSH song, followed very closely by The Camera Eye. Saw them countless times live and to be able to play something of this caliber live, and sound as good if not better than the studio version is amazing. Thanks for your reaction!

I think the quality of the composing - of the connection of themes, of the complementarity of each of their three roles, of the dynamic range, of the complexity of the work but, at the same time, the coherence - is Rush at its absolute finest. This is the song that if I were on a desert island and could have only one to listen to I would choose. Check out the rest of the album this came from (Hemispheres); it is a tour de force of absolute musical genius.

This is the first instrumental they wrote. It was so popular, and they liked it so much, they wrote many more over the years.

The video that you watched was filmed in one take on a closed stage. So it is about as close to live as it gets. Yes they are really that good.

This song represents all that Rush is about. They show off their musician skills, a big middle finger to the establishment for the length of it and no lyrics in it, playing and recording it “live” during a show rehearsal vs dubbing it to the album version, and how about the fact they had the foresight to make a music video roughly two years before that was considered ‘the thing to do’ like when MTV started.🤘🖖✌️🎸🥁🎹🎤🥇🇨🇦🎼

It's so complex and yet it still retains all this mood and different attitudes and different emotions and it's fantastic. On the record album and on the liner notes, this song is actually broken up into several chapters. Might be worth checking into that. I believe that it's Italian for The Strange Village. Reminds me of a Twilight Zone episode or something.
Much of the composition is in 7/4 vs the traditional 4/4 time that we think of as normal, which was the effect you were talking about.
And yet they still manage to play and solo over it and make it speak to us. This really is brilliant and I believe that they consider it to be their most technically ambitious work, although once again it still has all this character; it's not just technical virtuosity only.
Although this recording doesn't feature an audience, it's still live in one take. And you can tell they've been playing it a lot by now because I'm used to hearing the studio version which is pretty much identical to this but there are a few different details and the textures on the guitar for example are a little more distorted and rock on this.
So it's interesting that they were able to do it in one take here because when they first getting it down in the studio, they ultimately had to break it into three sections, but all of those were live one take through. It truly is a masterpiece.

Watch live version Live In Cleveland. Watch Xanadu Exit Stage Left. Watch Working Man Live in Cleveland. Watch Natural Science 1997 Molson Amphitheater. Watch Between the Wheels 30 Anniversary Tour. Watch YYZ Live in Rio yo name a few. Once you watch these and your mind is blown I will send you some more suggestions. Rush G.O.A.T!!!!
    Keep going down rabbit hole.

Cleveland? No. This live version is the only good live video of this song as a whole. I say as a whole because the Pinkpop live video is awesome, but incomplete. And Exit...Stage Left is the best live audio version. But, just my opinion.

Great reaction!! This is one of my all-time favorites. The instrumentation is amazing 👏 and I understand it's their most difficult song to play. There's another great instrumental, Where's My Thing, Here It Is....and it's live. Check it out, see what you think.
