I sometimes envy the fact that you Brits live in the “old world!” The fact that you can just be walking along the river’s edge and just stumble across something as old as ROMAN POTTERY just kills me! The oldest things you can find here in America only date back to the 1700’s. Great video again Si 😉 I’m so glad you rescued those table legs and restored them! Your creation turned out gorgeous 🤗

Si, another way you could replace the missing piece from the leg and foot of the table would be to find someone with a 3-D printer. Since you have 2 complete legs with feet from the table, you could use measurements from them along with photographs to have the missing piece printed out!

When you are using dowels to connect wood like that, make a small cut on the end of the dowel, place a teeny tiny wood wedge into the slit ends, just barely above the end, apply the glue and drive the two boards together. the wedges will expand the dowel ends slightly making the tightest bond ever.

The story and pictures of the B-17 brought back memories. My father piloted a B-17 during WWII. They lost use of an engine too and had to return to base with a full load of bombs on board. They had to fly at a lower altitude and I don’t think they had fighter protection. My father said nothing looked better than the shores of England. I think he said the White Cliffs of Dover. It wasn’t likely the plane could land safely with one engine gone and the bombs. Everything was cleared around the landing strip. My Dad said he said a prayer and thank God they landed safely. One of his crew said it was one of the smoothest landings my father had ever made. I wonder if he knew that crew? I think B-17s had the highest mortality rate of any other division. I read a letter from him to my Grandmother saying he’d made 5 missions and had to make 35 more before he could go home. He was in his early 20’s from a rural town in Nebraska, USA. I don’t think he had a clue what was ahead for him. They hoped that was the last Great War.

Over Si and the bottles actually 😂, my chap keeps coming home and saying " oh I wonder who u are watching" in a sarcastic tone lol,I'm still awaiting the mudlarking nude calender, with various bottles placed artistically over the rude bits ,note to Si,it would sell loads !

Gorgeous little table. It came out beautifully. I think it could also make a charming little pedestal for a guest bathroom with a sink mounted on top a gorgeous oval mirror above and then use part of the third led with a small wooden top to shield a mirror light. Love it!

THE BEST BIT about the restoration is to imagine you’re the first person to have a drink from that pub table in maybe a hundred years or more! It’s incredible to try and imagine the scene from the last time the table was used. Well done and thank you Simon!

I am definitely going to use your oil and secret ingredient technique! Awesome job on the restoration! Love it!! My secret ingredient is Gilders wax or paste ...which is a wax and stain combo product...perfect for most all metallic finishes...bronze ,silver ,gold and also black...apply with a toothbrush and buff off. It also hardens up and is protective. I use as an alternative to paint as well as restorations. Sometimes if I am cheating for quickness to get an antique look I will spray a piece that has lots of decor (highs and lows) with flat black fire or heat proof paint for cooking grills. I then sand all the highlights to bring out the shiny steel....then apply a satin polyurethane or lacquer...is a sweet aged look...blacksmith-ed. Old timers here in the states would use used motor oil then heat it up and kinda burn it on.....love your show...my site is .....@ sledge_metal ...on instagram. Im getting ready to start regular work and do my metal as a side biz...excited to do projects just like your table! Keep up the excellent work.

Thanks Si Finds with some good finds too! Here in Pa. The Susquehanna River is about 10 miles from me and it's a mile across at many spots. Also the site of the Native Peoples including the Susquehannoux Indians, of which the river is named. They can trace human life back about 15,000 years archaeologically. The Susquehannoux pottery like the Roman pottery there has ground up shells in the clay. Interesting how the same methods were used round the world in some cases. I didn't know about that plane crash so Thanks for sharing this. I have two good friends and both their fathers flew on the bombers during the war. Both survived to live long lives. The one flew 56 missions, which was unheard of and nearly impossible. The other was shot down after a number of missions and captured by Germans, a tortured POW but survived and returned home. And now we are all allies in this current deal.
Beautiful job on the table Simon! I swear we are from the same mold in many ways! And the wooden top, it looked like mahogany or teak, do you know? The rust stuff seems to work pretty well too. And the beer on the top looked lovely enough to drink from here! Now you made me crave it! Thanks Kindly Simon! How long did you guys have out there before the waters came in? Hope you soon have Much Luck inna Muck along with Love, Light, Peace, Abundance and Joy! Kiss yer Chickens for me please! DaveyJO in Pa. P.S. Is your mailing address available?

Hey Simon -- did not know about those two B17s which crashed there. I had an uncle who was a B17 pilot and flew over 45 missions (he survived the war). Great heroes were the men who flew the bombers for the USAAF and the RAF -- risking their lives daily to protect the lives of those in the British Isles and slowly grind down the German forces. It's great to know that these men were memorialized for their sacrifice. Cheers!

That coal trick is great! Something else to consider for your two leg table is to make it into two large sconces, flanking a door or a huge mirror with semi circle plywood top.
