I cracked this open & was excited at what I found! Mudlarking w/ Nicola White (November 22)

  • Oh my goodness! This is the first one of these I have ever found! Something made me stop and pick up an odd shaped lump from the muddy Thames foreshore. I knew from the look and feel of it that there was something inside. My suspicions were soon confirmed! This is the first time I have found one of these and when I got it home I put it in a bucket of water to try to preserve it! During this outing I also find a lovely medallion but I cannot for the life of me see what is on it and so perhaps you can help me. There are also a few other things I could do with your help on.
If you would like to try mudlarking you need a permit from the Port of London Authority. Details here:-

Nicola, I have to let you know you gave my mom so much comfort before she passed. She was always so against learning any type of technology, she would say, “there’s nothing on that cockamamie contraption that I need to see!” She was 85 years old when I showed her one of your videos of you finding a pipe, a porcelain doll head and a few buttons and she was fascinated. I gave her my old iPad and she learned to open TH-cam and search your videos. She talked and talked about what you collected and the beautiful scenery you would show. You gave her peace and I can’t thank you enough. ❤

Hi Vic, Thank you for sharing that. Im so very sorry for the loss of your Mum. Im happy that she enjoyed watching the mudlarking and that it gave her pleasure and comfort. When I hear something like that it makes me feel so fortunate to be able to share something I love with people like your Mum. Sending you and her much Love. Nicola xx

I've just been watching videos of my brother. He was the last of my family and he died far too young, 4 years ago (49 years old). A short time before he died he introduced me to Nicola's TH-cam channel and they are now both inextricably connected in my mind, which is how I ended up back here tonight, and how I saw your post. Beautiful people like Nicola make such a difference to this world.

Nicola, I lost my big brother unexpectedly last week 4 days after surgery to amputate his foot. I have had trouble sleeping ever since returning from Georgia for his funeral. Listening to your calming voice on yet another great video actually relaxed me enough that I literally fell asleep typing my comment to you yesterday.
The cannon ball was a great find and I enjoyed seeing the cannons! Loved seeing sweet Grace again! She’s grown into such a stunning young lady!

16:22- Those are the metal bases from Loctal tubes for radios Dates from late 30's through the 1960's. often used in WW2 military radios. I have hundreds of the tubes for restoring old radios. Awesome find on the cannon ball. Very rare item here in the PNW of the U.S. On the cannonball, one can use a product called 'Rust Mort" or similar which will cause the rust to be chemically converted and will stop rust. If you can't find it there, try a panel beaters shop. They use it to stop rust on vehicles. IIRC, weigh the cannon ball. It's weight will indicate the size of cannon. Example: if it weighs 6 lbs. the cannon would have been a 6 pounder. My memory could be faulty on that info though.

The medal is Catholic. Its called the " Miraculous Medal"- has The Virgin Mary on one side, and the Cross on the obverse, with the M for Mary, below. These are surrounded by stars. It's a medal well known to Catholics. Love your channel! (The words on the medal say, " O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us, who have recourse to Thee.")

Congratulations on being featured as the cover story on Searcher Magazine! Outstanding cannonball find! Silver bullet? Maybe it was used for protection from the Werewolves of London? Maybe the fate of the polish bottle was still in the Mudlarking gods' hands and that it was meant for a new mudlark who sorely wanted to find their first complete bottle. That or maybe it's meant for someone mudlarking in the next century? Treasures come and go but memories are forever. #thesearcher

As you were the first mudlarking channel I found a few years ago I have learned so much from you about so many different finds, met many others like yourself from your recommendations of channels, and learned that some finds can lead to quite an adventure and occasionally a long lost relative of the owner. Your videos are always a joy to watch, thank you.😊

Wonderful video as always Nicola, beautiful medallion, coin and pipe. Thanks to Grace for the lovely clips with squirrel and the cannon ball. I had so many squirrels fighting over sunflower seeds in my 18inch diameter glass sunflower that they broke it off the stand and shattered it on a brick on the garden edge. I will have to get in touch with my daughter to find out where she got it, my grandson likes to go around the garden and point out the things HE gave me. Thanks Nicola!

I love everything that you find and the back stories surrounding it; the squirrel, but perhaps the King George coin is my favorite #TheSearcher

Cheers! I always enjoy the videos as well , when I worked along the water we would use brass washers stamped to indicate underwater pipes or cables and we would put them on docks . thank you

An enjoyable lark, once again, Nicola! You may find useful the downloadable black and white photo scales that can be laminated and placed under or alongside your finds for scale. There are several sizes that can give a good sense of scale, either while mudlarking in the field or in the studio. Thank you again for sharing your wonderful videos!

Nice cup of coffee and spending a half hour with you is truly a great way to start off my day off work. 6 days a week till January, ugh. Being Santa’s helper makes the holiday season a little rough. Ty for the moments.

#TheSearcher I love the story of the Glass bottle, a find from the past. and then minutes later reclaimed by the murky waters of the Thames. It was not yet ready to be displayed with Nicola's other treasures from the past. Lovely show with great explanation.

Those little round things with the stem and all the holes I believe, is a sewing machine bobbin that’s what it looks like to me anyway. I’m loving your shelves, Tonia.

Seeing the mud and crust breaking off of the cannon ball is very satisfying. It leaves a partial perfectly formed encasement. #thesearcher 🤞🤞the searcher gets to be sent to Nova Scotia!!
