My favorite bands defy genre, they're certainly one of them. Their song writing has always set them apart, and imo, is mostly responsible for their longevity and continued relevance.
They just started like a nu-metal band (and a very original one, I think Adrenaline has some pretty unique songs that sounded like nothing else at the time), but they're not anymore. They actually hate when people call the nu-metal. Imo since Around the fur came out they became something very different. I mean, yeah, there are some songs in Around the fur that you could consider to be kinda nu-metal, but I wouldn't consider the album as a whole as nu-metal. And since White pony came out, the nu-metal aspects in the band are practically null imo. They don't stick with just one genre, they always try new things and even combine genres. Honestly, Deftones is so unique and versatile that I think it's wrong to label them a just one genre of music.
@eliamkazama8846 that's why I said they transcend into much more than Nu Metal. When I met Stephen he said he doesn't care if they're labelled nu metal. He said as long as people vibe with their music they can label them however they want and that different people have different opinions.
Last time I saw Deftones was in a small club in Boston about 200 people. Chino climbed the ceiling pipes like monkey bars over the pit, then hung upside down from his legs and held out the mic, and we all took turns singing/screaming with him. Was dope.
I saw them in Vancouver in a small but famous club called the commedor ballroom. Their opening act couldn't get across the border into Canada for some reason (drugs) so to "make it up to us" they played for 2 1/2 hours!
Around The Fur has a common feeling during the entire album, that's why you're having this Mandela Effect, because Be Quiet and Drive are unforgettable! 🤘
His delivery is so unique and effective. Less lyrics but no way less content. Must be a nightmare to cover or copy. "Dress someone in somebody's clothes" I see that as forcefully viewing that person and treat him/her like someone you knew in the past or closing yourself up by ignoring the present. Hinting by "just drive far away" as running from the present or break free from the reality someone tries to trap you in, in which you people are all the same. Dope song.
@@IlIlllIIllII There's that too. It's all good man. Good art supposes to make us think inward and outward base on our own's perspective and the artist's. Lots of time we can't put the theory behind the whole thought processes or put it into words, doesn't mean that there might not be a definite way to look at it : )
Spent many a nights cruising with Deftones on. You could pop this cd in and hit play over and over and it never got old. Props on the audio quality on your videos. So many channels have faded audio but the songs always sound crisp here. Much love.
Suggestion for a future Monday is the band Snot. The band released one studio album, and had music recorded for the second album when Lynn Strait, the vocalist, passed away in an accident. Serj Tankian, Corey Taylor, Jonathan Davis and many more each sung on the tribute album Strait Up. Also included Angel’s Son by Sevendust.
You guys did 'My Own Summer' from the same album 'Around The Fur'. These guys covered a Helmet song. So, I'm still going to suggest check out a Helmet track.
Deftones started out Nu metal (Adrenalin and ATF) by White Pony they were breaking free from that the record label asked them to make "Back to School" after the album was released as a radio single.. They went in and made a "nu metal" hit with the simplest of ease i'd say that was the last time they were considered Nu metal...
Morning fellas!! Such a good song! One of my favs off the around the fur album! And i think you've done " my own summer" off the album last.? Either way thanks guys! Good song to wake up to❤️🤓
I was DJing in the booth at a bar and Chino came in with Team Sleep. He asked to come up into my booth and we went through my stuff very friendly and saw everything I had. He was wowed. And he said, "You know what? Just keep doing your thing because you are doing great!" He reffered to Bad Brains though which I already had coming up. It was a nice moment.
So happy you reacted to this. This is one of my favorite tracks by them it's very high from deftones and around the fur album I recommend actual Around the fur. Much heavier. and on another nu-metal monday: Limp Bizkit - Faith
@@carlbrenston8436 when I first heard it I was so shocked. I didn't know they were that heavy. Cause you know, I listened more to chocolate starfish and hot dog water when I was introduced to this band.
Mannnnn I saw them live this last summer at Sonic Temple, me and this stranger dressed up as Luke Skywalker had our arms around each other jumping and just screaming that outro together. Deftones out here giving me core memories in my adult life.
So glad y’all are exploring more Deftones! Certainly a top 5 favorite band of all time for me. This album is incredible start to finish (I mean.. 95% of their material is..) but this in particular is a special must have all the way thru!
This was also a pretty big radio played song. You guys could have heard it in passing when you were younger. At least peices of it. Side note: Funny shit. The line "I dont care where just, far" I've been singing the wrong way for years now! Haha, due to me not ever looking at the lyrics.🤦♂️ My version was "I'm just careless as, fuuuuck!"😂 Now take away what you know and listen to it again with my line and tell me if you can hear it. May be just me but funny nonetheless. Great reaction gentlemen!
A lot of people say nu metal, the first album was for sure but they started getting into the shoegaze/post hardcore sound on this album imo and evolved from there.
Yall should definitely check out "Hexagram", don't think you've done a song from that album (self titled album) and that song is one of my personal favorite's, and I can guarantee anyone else thats heard it would attest that its a great song and insane vocal performance.
It’s quite interesting because the song can be interpreted two ways, either himself literally driving away from something or someone, or him asking someone to be close, and then emotionally drive him away - self sabotage if you will. A forced separation of a relationship.
There are three Deftones songs about a midnight drive: Be Quiet and Drive, Passenger, and S3xtape. BQaD is about this midnight drive from the pov of the driver. Passenger is the pov of the passenger. S3xtape is the third-person pov. In BQaD the driver is escaping a heartbreak and asking the passenger to just imitate the ex-lover for the duration of the trip so that he can cope with the loss. In Passenger, the passenger agrees to do this if the driver will just keep driving further away from home so that they too can escape their own problems.
Chino screaming, straining his voice, and screeching is him mimicking the sound of the car speeding off fast. Not sure if it is that effect or it’s Chino just wailing at mic randomly portraying the protagonist’s anger and frustration wanting to escape from the town. But, can’t help but think it’s his way of creating that image using his voice.
I got into Deftones when they put out Around the Fur, My Own Summer got me into them, this song had me go out and buy the CD. The way this song ends makes me think that Chino kept singing this for 10 more minutes and the producer just had to start turning down the volume for time lol. Great song though, one of my absolute favorites by them. I'll admit that White Pony is definitely their most loved album, but with this being my intro to them it's probably the one that makes me the most nostalgic.
This album, ‘Around The Fur’ is the sole reason I was able to cope my way through HS. Of course I listened to a lot of bands, but this one was my favorite at the time. Track 8: ‘Dai The Flu’ is still my favorite song of all time to this day OH and the next one to do is the title track, a heavy hitter for sure
@@michaelmignone5869 I used to listen to it on repeat on long road trips with my folks. This song was the turning point for them, their breakaway from their peers and from what metal was at the time... A big sign of what was to come later on.
musically, the main riff is pretty similar to the one from everlong from the foo fighters, so I wouldn't be surprised if there's some subconscious recognition there
First off, no I can't remember you ever doing this song and I'd like to think I've got a fairly decent memory. Sometimes I'm disappointed you guys didn't do the music video. This is definitely not one of those times. The mv has the radio edit. Tears Don't Fall by Bullet for My Valentine is another where I strongly recommend NOT doing the video because radio edit. Then there's other times where I feel doing the music video is almost mandatory for the visual component. I'm extremely grateful you did official video to Metallica's One but I think you really missed out on something great not doing the music video version of Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer. Pearl Jam's Do the Evolution: MUST. DO. THE MV. Also gotta get to Minerva, Rocket Skates, and another of my favorites, Hole in the Earth

I really liked deftones since I've heard this track, but in the acoustic version (without Adam Sandler lol it has a studio acoustic version from their album "b-sides & rarities" ). It's quite trippy and much calmer than the original version, hope one day I'll see it among your videos guys
Maybe people are confusing this with your reaction for Passenger? Just a thought. If we're doing nu-metal you should do Medicated by downthesun, Double X Minus by Five Pointe 0, Nanu by Factory 81, Bloodwork by 36 Crazyfists, and Bartender by hed PE for a small start.
Deftones are a nu metal band but they transcend into so much more than just that. This is one of my favourites.
