I love how raw and unpolished Adrenaline was. I actually got introduced to Deftones when Around the Fur came out and then had to go pick this one up, and I absolutely loved it. Definitely doesn't have the production value of the later stuff but it just has this gritty emotion that hits home. Total time capsule for me, just remember riding my skateboard around with this on my discman. Such a vibe.
My band used to practice in the same room that the video was filmed in. It is in downtown Sacramento. That room had such a cool vibe to it. Wrote a bunch of songs in that room.
@@feastorafamine this would have been in like 2001-2002 and the band was called Sons of Shadrack. We eventually changed the name to just Shadrack. It was the room all the way in the back to the left. What about you what band were you in?
@@feastorafamine oh yeah they were long gone and had their own big spot for sure. The place was called Matt Erich’s Studio if I remember correctly. The owner had like 3-4 Rehersal spaces and he also had a little recording studio in there. We recorded 2 tracks with him there. I remember his big claim to fame at the time was that Papa Roach recorded the first Last Resort demo there. Where did you practice at, what band were you in?
I think what separates deftones from normal nu-metal is that they never really chased popularity, never really chased radio plays, video plays and the like. They never played the popular festivals (from what I recall) like Korns Family Values shows, maybe not even Ozzfest, which was nu-metal wall to wall. Certainly the first couple of albums had 'hits' on them that had the similar influences to Korn, Limp Bizkit etc and they were kind of bullied into having a radio single (Back To School) by the label (Madonnas label I might add, they were first band to be signed by Madonna), but White Pony onwards they just went in their own direction. They're like Radiohead or other bands that appeared as part of certain movements - deftones had the same influences as their peers but they manifested them in other directions, became popular on their terms and thrived.
They played Family Values in 2006 and Ozzfest in 99. They played Warped Tour numerous times which is pretty popular. Played Glastonbury, Pinkpop. Leeds and few others and still continue to get top billing or near at most festivals today
Damn close to me. I was 18 in 93. You're so right about it being an amazing time! I went to see White Zombie and Korn together in Davenport Iowa in 94. One of the greatest memories in my life, along with Pantera in 95 and Disturbed in 03!
Old Deftones was unreal! They would do shows anywhere and blow the other performing bands out of the water. From the old Cattle Club to a farm show in Chico back in the day they were unreal. Long live Chi Cheng!
Well said sir much love I miss Blockbuster music and the 1st time I got to just listen to a random cd on the rack..I picked Deftones "Adrenaline " bc of artwork and skateboarder on back and the song titles...took ONE listen and fell head over heels
Dang I thought you guys already covered this. "Bored" was the 1st Deftones song I heard, I think it was their first single ever. I saw it on THE BOX back in the early 90's. My dad lived in the sticks so they didn't get MTV but they had THE BOX. 1st time I heard KORN was on that channel. SHout out to people who remember it.
I gotta think 7 words would be the first single since Chino had dreads in that video and here he doesn’t. I know Chino cut his dreads so he wouldn’t be confused with Korn.
I was 16 when the album came out. I live in Scotland but all the best bands of that era came through here and I spent a lot of time with these dudes and their peers and saw some great shows. There will never be another time like it.
This entire album was so freaking RAW! They were quite young on this first album. For as much as I love their more “mature sound” nowadays, I love to vibe to their older albums almost equally. Top 5 bands of all time for me.
I went to their concert for this album, Bored and 7 Words are two of my favorite sins by them. When we were in line, these two guys walked by and they were wearing weird hats and we made fun of them, they ended up being the guitar and bass player of Deftones, we ended up getting to meet them with Korn, and Marilyn Manson.
LA 90’s teen here 🙋🏻♀️ Boyle Heights born and raised. I experienced this scene first hand and let me tell you it was awesome! I wouldn’t trade it. As a teenager, we spent weekends going to shows in Hollywood. The Whiskey, The Troubadour, The Palladium…I saw so many of these Nu-Metal bands live multiple times, before they made it big and for some before name changes and appearance changes to find the aesthetic. A lot of them were starting out so they played the smaller clubs. Some of my fondest memories. 😊 Also, the album name is Around the Fur and the song is Change (In the House of Flies) from the album White Pony. 😃
Biggest Deftones fan. I love how they have grown over the years while never chasing radio play. You should check out something from the latest album Ohms next.
That's exactly what I was doing when this song came out. Hanging with my friends, drinking St. Ides, smokin Marb Reds and jammin out to Korn, Tool, and Deftones. The 90s were the best!!!
Morning fellas! Such a good song!!! I love the def tones! My fav album tho is around the fur! And those times were great! I was 16 or 17 then, music was great then for sure! Love it!! Thanks guys! ❤️🤓
This is NOT LA by metal. First off that's Chino's house in Sacramento and his first wife on the porch. The rehearsal footage was at the same studios as my band three doors down from our spot. The scenery is all 916. I'm standing just outside the rehearsal door as this was recorded
Talking about time capsules resembling this video theres a jonah hill movie called mid 90s that captures perfectly that time and also my teen years here in my country too...no hours to get back home,no cell phones,no playstations, just you and your friends chilling and actually talking, teasing and nagging, but at the end of the day, true companionship..

this song has such a feeling to it and aura tht comes when i play it .... nothing un holy just i can feel the time period this came out from tht guitar tone and its sick af
I love this song. Thanks for another deftones track I can add to my playlist. Love to listen to some songs for the first time with you guys. My favorite album is around the fur and I recommend you to listen: Be Quiet and Drive, Around the fur. But from this album Adrenaline I recommend to check: Root. This one is cool to me.
Yall just described my outfit back in the day. Jinko's jeans, converse, punk rock t shirt, chain wallet, spiked hair, the whole nine yards. Back at my High school I was a trend setter. People started to copy my look. So like a chameleon I had to change again and then I became a hippie kind of look.
Hell yeah! My favorite Deftones song! Seeing this played live right after they played Root is one of my dopest concert memories from back in the day! The crowd was going the f*ck off!!! Do Root next!
Great Album!!! I'm a huge Tool fan but my second most listened to band has been Deftones. I saw them at Ozzfest in San Antonio summer of 99. Also saw System of a Down and Slipknot that show. Slipknot was on the second stage not first but killed it. The very next day I bought all 3 of those bands albums. Instant fan of all three.🤘🏽
My fav fact about this album is that it was written entirely in E standard tuning No drop tuning at all And yet they made the riffs in this album sound so bloody heavy its amazing
You need to watch Reservoir Dogs, Smokey! It’s a must watch movie. Definitely put it on your bucket list🤘🏼this reminds me of elementary school coming out in ‘95(don’t think I actually intentionally listened to it until middle school). White Pony was High School for me.
About 25 years ago I was blasting this song in my ex's car and she actually had a badass sound system in her car so it sounded great. Random car next to me asked what I was listening to and I told him about it. That only happened to me one other time. I was blasting Cloud Connected by In Flames. Some guy across the street waved and got my attention and said that is fuckin amazing. Who is that? In Flames! Cloud Connected!

I saw the Kiss reunion tour in Philadelphia during the late 90’s. Deftones opened up and I had no clue who they were. They began their set with this song and it blew me away. They were and still are the loudest band I’ve ever heard. So glad I got to see them in their early career.
Adrenaline is all time album for me. 16 years old I saw Deftones in a basement play this stuff. I haven't been able to vibe with any of the more melodic Deftones because I experiences all of Adrenaline live. Everything that came after Adrenaline was so different and wasn't for me. My fave Deftones album . It sounded different than almost anything at the time . BUT ! It was so close to the era where Nu metal hit that they got blurred into it . But this album was original . But so many bands tried to style bite them and Korn they got labeled as the same genre .
If you guys want a great example of the Woodstock '69 vibe, you should check out "Soul Sacrifice" by Santana! It's an instrumental song but everyone in the band gets their time to shine and the energy never stops. Until it finally does 😆. One first culturally diverse bands to hit the mainstream.
Gonna 2nd some more Santana. Them talkin' about the gal bein' stoned and swaying reminded me of the Santana concert I went to about the time Supernatural came out. (My time to be 18-20) We were in the cheap seats and enjoying the music when a gal that was probably from the Woodstock '69 era landed in next to us. Let's just say she didn't seem like she'd slowed down on the smoking, if ya catch my drift. She was sitting down on a blanket, but still swaying, arms up, and sounding off almost like she was in church when they were playing the older songs in the set. 🤣 It was quite the visual for my sheltered, messed up, nerdy/goth ass for sure.
