Two concerts that Chino could have called off or left during, but he is a badass! First one, he had laryngitis and could barely speak. He sang and screamed his heart out not missing a beat. 🤘
Second one, he was on top of the speaker and busted his ass. He went down hard and we didn't think he was getting back up alone. He popped up a moment later, shook it off and continued on. That's metal. 🤘

  • @pushpauseandwave
    @pushpauseandwave 3 ปีที่แล้ว +95

Hollywood is correct that Deftones have been around since the late 80's, though they were really just a bunch of kids playing house parties and skate parks fucking around for the first few years. By say '91-'92 they were much more established and had a nice catalog of their own material which was much more in the mode of early hardcore bands like Bad Brains and Suicidal Tendencies mixed with some of the influences of the alternative rock of the time (think Faith No More, Jane's Addiction, Primus, etc). By 1993 they were pretty much the biggest local band in Sacramento and one of the biggest in Northern California in general. They got signed to Madonna's label Maverick Records in 1994 and after a long process of demos and producer switches they released their first full length album "Adrenaline" in 1995, produced by Terry Date (funny Smokey mentioned White Zombie, same producer). Many of the songs on it had been stuff they had been playing for years which they fine-tuned a bit more, some of the newer material veered a bit more into the atmospheric territory the band is known for today. The production on this first record was a more Lo-Fi approach resembling the sound they liked from then current hardcore bands like Quicksand.
As for the "nu-metal" discussion, I never considered Deftones to be a part of it but they were certainly associated with it and influenced it. By the time that even became a term, I think they had moved away from that sound considerably already but it's hard to bring that style of music up without mentioning their name at one point. "Adrenaline" is the most "nu-metal" sounding of all the Deftones albums but even that album is all in standard tuning (a hallmark of nu-metal is downtuning), and much more melodic overall than any of their contemporaries.
if you want to check out more from this era, I recommend:
    Bored (watch the video too)
    Birthmark
    One Weak
    Root
    Teething (Crow 2 soundtrack)
    Fireal
    Around The Fur
    Lotion
    Headup
I'll be honest though, I'd much rather hear you guys tackle Be Quiet and Drive, Minerva, Feiticeira, Tempest, Xerces, Diamond Eyes, Hearts/Wires, etc.

I think on the cover is a bulb used for aspirating adrenaline into your sinuses.
Adrenaline is my favorite Deftones album. The songs have Chino's melodic/sultry tone mixed with his beastly growl. I first heard this Deftones in early 2000 & saw them in concert twice. Check out the story of Chi Cheng, the bassist that died. His heart failed while trying to recover from a coma from a 2009 auto wreck.

When I was in college in the mid 90's, I used to go to a record store to find new music. I would occasionally see free promotional cassettes with anywhere from one to four songs on them. One day, I saw a cassette for Deftones, containing this song, and three others, two per side. I took it home with me and was enthralled by what I heard. When their album Adrenaline came out, I immediately purchased it. For me, it was a new sound. I recognized the elements of hip hop, rock, hard core, and a punk attitude. It was so refreshing. So raw and gritty. Honestly, the rest of their body of work does not as much align with my taste in music as this album.

You guys were spot on about Deftones being around in the 80s, although they were just teens at the time, but they actually released a demo in 1991 or 1992, i think, that had a lot of rap-metal esque songs in it. If you get the time there are songs called "Hogburg Hop" "Teething" (which was on The Crow 2 soundtrack) "Christmas" "Freaks" which are nu-metal songs released before nu-metal got really big. Especially "Christmas" and "Freaks". Btw Deftones have released an absolute shit ton of music that not a lot of fans even know about, so it's probably worth going down the Deftones rabbit hole and finding some really good songs, They were also planning on releasing Eros but Chi Cheng (Bassist) passed away before it was finished and they shelved it, anyway, there are some pretty good songs on Eros as well. Also they have a shit ton of B-Sides that are awesome.....I'm gonna stop now

His last name is also pronounced Mor-en-o, not Marino like the football player. Just thought ya'll would enjoy that :)
If you liked that song, listen to the whole album, its great! they're also great live...I've seen them a number of times. You guys just took me back to my teens, growing up in LA, jamming with my best friends...we always listened to the awesome hardcore rock music. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

@Not Important you mean no one in the universe needs to GO back to school, right? Or else why would multiple people be suggesting it for a reaction video?

The 7 words are you have the right to remain silent.
They’ve always had a hip hop element to their sound, the drummer is more groove based and plays half time beats so there is a natural bounce, Also chino wasn’t a singer, their first demo tapes were of him just rapping over the music , so the first album had a lot of whispers, screams etc cause he wasnt comfortable singing, it was later in he got comfortable singing also, they are considered one of the pioneers of the nu metal sound,

I picked up Deftones' first two albums for free from my college's radio station. My GF at the time had a class and show there. I was able to get a box of CDs that was on the floor of the booth. They weren't the station's format and the professor let me take them.

Came out in 95 this was the first concert I ever went to wen I was 17 in 97. This entire album is like nothing you will ever hear. Deftones hasn't even replicated anything like this since. A once in a lifetime album. Kinda like nevermind by Nirvana.

korn & chino - wicked (ice cube cover) such an important song of that generation. cuz of that song korn & cube collabed on each others albums which led to the family values tour(s) where artists from diff genres would meet and make music together blurring the lines between rock and rap

  • @DalePicolet

YES!!! This is exactly how you should react to 7 Words - and now you know why the album is appropriately titled Adrenaline - :) and I'd say listen to Engine 9 as well.
