The driving composition juxtaposed against the vocal drone and the lead melody at the flat 6 in the chorus, (Beato check?lol) this is the money. And then the outro. A melancholy hell in the repetition and increasing intensity. Like watching a high speed collision on a loop, knowing it results in a loved one departed. Deftones, man. A little bottled lighting in this tune. Thank you!
That's what made them so unique and stand out, his vocal style. In a time when everyone thought more distortion and faster singing or rapping was the way to stand out. He also does all that but tastefully. Hearing this takes me back to my high school days, sitting in my friends garage smoking and listening to deftones for hours.

YES! YES! YES! Deftones is one of my favorite bands. Despite floating in some Metal genres (Nu Metal, Experimental Metal, Hardcore), I usually say that they don't have a defined label. They are unique. A sound that perfectly mixes heavy with soft in Chino Moreno's unparalleled voice with bright and reflective lyrics. It's as if we travel to another dimension with each song. A spectacular band. "Change", Digital Bath", Minerva", Sextape", "Rosemary", You've Seen The Butcher", Diamond Eyes", "Hole in the Earth", and so many other wonderful tracks. Deftones is addictive.
Chino grew up listening to new wave as much as he listened to punk and metal. As you dig deeper into their catalog you will hear the variance in his voice.
Deftones really fill that itch for Hornysad music. Im really happy that they so heavily influence so many current amazing acts (sleep token, spiritbox, Loathe, Tesseract)
I just wanted to recommend Deftones, but you where ahead of me! They are known for their dichotomy in music, whether its the music, the vocals or both, its dark, yet sexy....Let me just drop some song titles if you choose to dig deeper into their catalog: Change (in the house of flies), Royal, Rosemary, Cherry Waves, Minerva, (L)MIRL and The Spell of Mathematics. All songs are from different albums spanning over 2 decades, i hope you will check them out and enjoy the ride!
Chino's style and techinque are one of a kind as are Deftones as a whole. They are the only group I really know of who's sound and lyrics can invoke for me an almost surreal dream-like state of bliss that is both so amazing and beautiful but at the same time very eery and unsettling with its menacing and oppressive atmosphere of almost existential dread. While obviously not an overarching theme in every Deftones track i'd say next to their versatility easily their most defining and unique trait.
Real quick note on Chino. His favorite singer, growing up and favorite band was the Cure. His singing pattern mimics, that of Robert Smith, the lead singer from the cure.
For me what makes this band so unique is that the way they create these extra dimensions between the heavy riffs and soothing vocals....like there's this something emerges from it and it's so haunting....
Abe Cunningham is a criminally underrated drummer. No one else has his groove and swagger. Chino's bigger influences are The Cure and Depeche Mode. You can REALLY hear those influences in his side band ††† (Crosses).
I think their version of Drive by The Cars is one of the best covers I've ever heard. I'm also a little biased as these guys rank super high on my favourites list 😂
This band is the reason i listen to the music i do today....i say them when i was maybe 16, they opened for Pantera in 1996 i believe, its when Adrenaline had just came out ...i was in shock that you can sound heavy AND sing!? At that time in my youth, i was ONLY listening to heavy stuff....they singlehandedly changed my perspective of music....i also saw them when White Pony had come out...at the Worcester Palladium...just Deftones and Glassjaw played... nearly a 2 hour set for Deftones....they constantly get thrown in that "nu metal" garbage conversation, but this band outlasted all those bands basically...and just get better with age....one of the greatest bands of all time in my opinion
This songs just unlocks memory lane every time I hear it, it minds me of being in high school and walking down the hallways with this just blasting in my headphones on my CD player back in 2004.
Deftones. Came for the hard guitar riff screamy songs.... stayed for the emotional ones. Deftones is such a wild ride! one of the best bands to ever do it. my suggestions would be KNIFE PARTY, SEX TAPE, ROCKET SKATES, RICKETS. Everyone is gonna tell you "Do Passengers! it has Maynard from Tool!" but i dont like that song.... the overbearing popularity of Tool takes away the spotlight from Chino and Deftones own greatness somehow. i prefer both band seperate.
I fell in love with the Deftones the first time I heard them in the 90's, but no one thought they had as much to offer as they have put out, perhaps except for Madonna as she's the one that signed them originally. As much as I don't care for her music, she apparently has a good ear. I believe she also took the Beastie Boys on their first tour. The Deftones were pigeon holed as a nü metal band back in the day, but we've all learned they were much more. They continue to put out great albums and Chino getting sober and quitting smoking has greatly improved their live performances. A Deftones rabbit hole is not a bad one to go down. RIP Chi Cheng.
A friend of mine once said about this song: "The Guitar and Bass are crying / sobbing while the drums are frantic, and the vocals are soothing" and I still think about that to this day when it comes on.
You definitely need to react to the Deftones song “Passenger”. It features Maynard and their vocals together is what makes it one of the best songs of all time. Not to mention, the song has a great meaning. 😆😏
You should do one these 3 songs next!!! Deftones are such a well rounded band and reach different levels of talent. Diamond eyes You’ve seen the butcher Passenger
All deftones songs are dope. Chino has such a distinct sound, he cannot be matched. That being said, diamond eyes and sex tape are 2 of my all time faves
This song makes me tear up every time I'm listening to it, just because I have so much memories that are linked to it from the time 'Around The Fur' came out. Glorious times...
4:13 There's a quote from Chino from a long time ago (around the time this album was released) where he said his clean vocals are heavily influenced by female singers like PJ Harvey, Bjork, etc. In other words: You're correct. Side Note: I think it's insane that these guys have been around since 1988 (they took a while to get noticed, *BY MADONNA*, of all people...)
Sade as well was another big female vocal inspiration I saw him mention a few times. The similarity to her singing style, tone and delivery can be found on quite a few tracks that Chino sings on, Deftones or otherwise.
I had never thought of the comparison with Dido, but its shockingly on point... It's even better when you listen to the acoustic version of Be Quiet and Drive and then to Dido's Thank You. It's crazy how similar they sound in some parts.
I hope you've been able to revisit the album version of this song since the time you recorded the reaction. This music video is for the radio edit, which is like a minute and a half shorter and ends just as the song is peaking.
I've been a fan since I was 11 and i'm 34 now and I implore you to listen beyond Adrenaline; there's some good(ish) tracks there but the sound was definitely born of a certain time and was well before they really came into their trademark "wall of emotional sound" that I feel carves them out from other nu-metal bands of that era and launches them upward and beyond the stratosphere. Be Quiet and Drive, Combat, Minerva, Xerces, Kimdracula, Cherry Waves, Dai The Flu, Around The Fur, Entombed, Rosemary, Change and Pink Maggit - This is their best shit man, well beyond what they would've or could've conceptualised as the band that put out Adrenaline.
Oh, I've tried and tried and tried to embrace their post Adrenaline music, it's just not my cup of tea. No disrespect to those who love it. Different people, different taste, it's what makes the world of music so grand and fascinating!!@@bb.buchanan
Deftones been my favorite band for like 25 years now I find it funny that people are just now discovering them. So there's always been a tug o war internally between members of the band. Specifically chino(vocals) and stef(guitar). Stef wants to be heavy and chino wants to be soft and melodic. The outcome is what we know as deftones!
Fun fact: Madonna discovered and signed Deftones to her Maverick label. She probably heard that same Dido quality you did (even though that might've been before Dido, back in 94/95). But yea, you're definitely right. He's got a certain alternative/indie edge to his vocals that would suit projects like that. Chino's side project Team Sleep really brings this out. Deftones also covers a lot of alternative/pop tracks ("Drive" by The Cars, "No Ordinary Love" by Sade, "Do You Believe" by The Cardigans, "The Chaffeur" by Duran Duran, etc.). His voice really suits that aesthetic, and you can tell he's a fan of more than just the genre he occupies. This unique vocal aesthetic of Chino's is definitely a big part of what sets Deftones apart in the "nu-metal" scene and made it so they outlived the usual fare. "Change (In The House of Flies)" is probably still my favorite, as well as "The Passenger (ft. Maynard of Tool)." In fact, the whole White Pony album is frickin' timeless. I had that on rotation in my teens and still listen to it. Edit: Dunno why I didn't see this was posted 6 months ago. lmao Oh well. If you haven't checked out either songs, then I have wasted no time. lol Off to see if you've done more now! Hehehehehe.
It was 1998, I was 15 yrs old and this music video kept coming up on MTV 2. I was sooo mesmerized by Chino's vocals and I couldn't wait to see this music video again. My best friend would always give me shit for liking this song, " this song is fucking gay bro!" " why you like this gay shit bro!" And honestly this song does have a unique feminine quality to it but towards the end of this song it just brings it back to pure hardcore heavy delight! Love this song!

I feel like only anime could depict this visual, but imagine you had an Antihero that travelled by summoning the visceral chaos of humanity into a floating platform and he just floated on the back of it. That’s the word picture I get when I hear his vox on top of this beautifully hard bed of music
There are so many great Deftones songs. Sextape, rosemary, knife prty, cherry waves, beauty school, You've seen the butcher. All my top faves. Digital bath and RX Queen as well 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Passenger, My own summer, Rx queen, Digital bath, Diamond eyes, You've seen the butcher, Change(in the house of flies), Minerva... there's so many songs i would like you react OMG!
The Deftones are absolutely amazing an unique in so many ways. They were thrown into the "Nu-Metal" bin because critics don't know how to think. Keep exploring, it only gets better from here. I'd suggest "Digital Bath" next or "Passenger" but there really is no wrong turn to make, this is your journey. I actually recommend the acoustic version of this, it was my girlfriend and I's "song." As a singer myself I would describe Chino as violently sensual. And they are amazing live. The energy is like a tattoo on your life.
2:30 if she hasn’t, she should watch and listen to the first battle scene of Gladiator. It’s this same reason his one of a kind voice combined with an epic rock instrumentals that makes this iconic song indescribable.
To kind of prove your point of Chino's vocals working in a "pop" musical setting, weirdly enough it also works the other way round. Check out the mashup of Deftones "Change (In the House of Flies)" with Britney Spears' "Toxic". It's crazy how good that sounds. (Britney vocals, Deftones music)

And honestly this song does have a unique feminine quality to it but towards the end of this song it just brings it back to pure hardcore heavy delight! Love this song!
Deftones
My favorite band ever❤
Chino is brilliant and very talented and is the real deal!
And if you understand his musical influences, and are also sharing that taste in music.. even better!
Love his other bands.. Team Sleep.. Palms.. ✝️✝️✝️(Crosses)
And he has numerous collaborations with other artists.. recorded and live!
Just take the red pill and dive in ❤️
I feel like only anime could depict this visual, but imagine you had an Antihero that travelled by summoning the visceral chaos of humanity into a floating platform and he just floated on the back of it. That’s the word picture I get when I hear his vox on top of this beautifully hard bed of music
Deftones is all about tension and layered texture.
There are so many great Deftones songs. Sextape, rosemary, knife prty, cherry waves, beauty school, You've seen the butcher. All my top faves. Digital bath and RX Queen as well 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Bored is a must listen to
I DONT CARE WHERE JUST FAR‼️‼️‼️🗣️🗣️🗣️
Knife party has vocal support from a woman who does a super unique throat-singing style and hits maybe the highest note I’ve ever heard. Check it out
Passenger, My own summer, Rx queen, Digital bath, Diamond eyes, You've seen the butcher, Change(in the house of flies), Minerva... there's so many songs i would like you react OMG!
This song is the definition of timeless.
deftones, type o.... im shocked you are literally reacting to my playlists rn LOL! love it
One of my all time favorite bands, so many good songs. Saw them live a few times. Try the song "Cherry Waves"!
It’s crazy how much they’ve blown up
It's insane how Deftones is now all the sudden relevant again🤔..
Chino has a unique style that pulls all the emotional chords deep within
ah such 90's vibes. hi miss! i hope youv3e had a good week
It's funny because he essentially kinda DOES put his vocals to a trip-hop Dido-esque instrumental with his side projects Team Sleep and Crosses.
One of my favorite bands. Chino’s voice is dope
More Deftones reactions 💯 One of my favourite bands.
'Entombed' is a great one as well as 'knife party' and 'beware (the water)'
2:30 if she hasn’t, she should watch and listen to the first battle scene of Gladiator. It’s this same reason his one of a kind voice combined with an epic rock instrumentals that makes this iconic song indescribable.
The acoustic version of this song is insane.
Love your reaction you were very into it! You’re very beautiful btw! 😊 Keep up the content!
Yeah more deftones please
Deftones I’ve seen live 4 times! It’s like sexual emotional rock.. it hits different once u start to HEAR the lyrics.
