Yea Abe has some signature things he does a lot that just add bits and pieces to it. The tom rolls, the double snare hits. His drums always sound great too. Especially his snare. His playing always compliments the song in the best of ways

theyre fans of new wave groups like depeche mode and duran duran. idk if u know them but they they each have songs like never let me down again about driving and chauffeur is another song that deftones have even covered about driving. as much as theyre a “metal” band he has wide influences from hip hop and sade to goth music and punk bands thats a big reason why i like them
You are 100% right about not understanding the lyrics from hearing it. Some Rock and Metal bands have better annunciation, but in general you to read the lyrics before you can understand every word in most metal songs. It is what it is
My introduction to Deftones was my own summer when I was in highschool back in the 90s and I was hooked instantly. And I understood it because that's mostly what I listened to back then. Kinda like I couldn't understand fast rap for years. I listened to artist like pac and nas. But Twista and bone had me at a loss till I listened to it more then now I ran hear damn near every word off top.

And yes the screaming noisy end is chinos voice, he is known for making these noises often in live concerts.... he also trashes a lot of mics during a show cuz he swings and slams them. He uses wired mics, cuz he always use the wire around his arm and hands😊

I've been a fan of Deftones since the 90's and even have the title of one of their songs tattooed on my back (Dai the Flu). This was the first song I heard from them and they are next to Aerosmith for my favorite band of all time. Chino is the best at eliciting such an emotional response from listeners, and he's even better live. I always intepreted this song is about the angst about the place you feel stuck in. As a teenager growing up in a rural small town, I certainly didn't feel at home there. Now at 39, I understand it even more. Ironically, I am now married to my high school go-to guy, and he loves to drive long distances on vacations. 😂
