- I have wanted to react to Deftones for a long time. I remember seeing them first being recommended to me months ago through TH-cam but I didn't want to hear them yet as I knew it would ruin it for the reactions. Finally we're diving down the rabbit hole. I have no idea who these guys are but I cannot wait to learn more.

Korn just entered the chat and might have a little something to say about that,early Korn that is all the way through Untouchables.Deftones has a few songs I like but never got into them for whatever reason,not saying they bad just not for me
If Deftones are nu-metal than why is there an interview with Chino on tiktok where he states that they aren't? He literally says they are separate from nu-metal and that they are their own thing. He even goes on to say that him and the band wanted to stop touring with Korn (and other nu-metal bands) because they didn't want to be grouped in with their genre and have that label put on them.
Also, all the classifications I can find for them list them as alt-metal. A different genre from nu-metal. They have similarities but are utimately different.
Deftones is among the most consistent and creative bands over the past 2 decades

Straight up,,, I'm 57 and when I first heard they're E.P. Adrenaline when it came out!!! Hook line and sinker. I was into Queensriche,Tool, Dream Theater,,Alice in Chains, Soundgarden at the Time....and Then these guys came out in FORCE with Adrenaline!!!,,,, floored me,, And kept consistently producing better progressive albums/cd's

It is, but this is off Around the Fur. Personally, I prefer AtF to WP, but I still fully believe WP is an all-time classic.
For music, maybe. It's the bands weakest and most commercial effort.

I see people commenting that this isn’t even one of their best songs, but I cried the first time I heard this. That “I don’t care where, just far!” is so visceral, I can’t get enough of this song. If you like this one definitely listen to “My Own Summer (Shove It)”. “Change (in the House of Flies)” is probably their signature song and a damn masterpiece. As a hip hop fan you will like “Back to School (Mini Maggit)”, and as a TOOL fan you will love “Passenger” bc Maynard does vocals on it. I also personally like “Feiticeira”

Deftones are in my top 3 bands of all time. I've been lucky enough to see them live twice. 'Feiticeira' is my personal favourite track, but there are SO many incredible songs from these guys.

Deftones are from California... they were caught between the 90's grunge scene... Pantera's reign in metal... and the rise of KoRn and 'nu metal'... in the 90's.... Their debut album 'Adrenaline' in 1995 was heavy on riffs and groove like a punk rock version of Pantera.
This was Deftones' 2nd album in 1997 - 'Around the fur'... probably a precursor to the 2000 album 'White Pony' that broke the band huge... 'Around the fur' was more in their style and sound as they were emerging as a heavy rock band... They are a seamless fusion of metal... punk rock... hip hop grooves... and some electronic influences.
Some of their best tracks - 'My own summer' ... 'Bored' ... 'Change (in the house of flies)' ... 'RX Queen' ... 'Hole in the Earth' ... 'Engine No. 9'... 'Minerva'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥

I never trust anyone who says that they don't like music. We just can't be friends as they obviously have a void where their soul should be. I grew up in a house where music was always being played, mostly radio. In 1976 my world was changed when my neighbour shoved Pink Floyd's Wish you were Here in my hands and ordered me to listen to it. My musical journey began there and will continue forever.
I recently got back into Deftones, not actually having heard their most recent albums. Their original stuff is classic but their "new" stuff absolutely blew me away.
I had a similar journey. Knew their old stuff. Had White Pony. Purchased their self titled after Minerva was on MTV. Kind of lost track of them for a decade or more. Came back round after their newest album dropped and immediately purchased all of the CDs I'd missed. Love love love their later work. Everyone shits on Gore. I love that album. Koi No Yokan blew me away. They're journey has been special.

Having said that, I can't believe fans of Deftones entire catalog would rank it as such. There are SOOO MANY amazing songs from this band. I get it... it's an early hit. It doesn't mean the band didn't create better music.

Deftones are not "nu-metal" no matter how much people try to claim they are. They're a mix of alternative rock and metal. Their official genre is actually labeled as alternative metal (aka alt-metal), which is a different genre than nu-metal (check their wikipedia page). The band, themselves, are also quoted as saying they do not consider themselves nu-metal. They do have similarities to nu-metal at certain times, though, so I understand why some people are confused.
That being said, they have a lot of seriously great songs. They've had 22 radio played singles and, what's awesome is, some of their best songs aren't even singles. So they have a lot of great stuff to appreciate.
Their debut album definitely is NuMetal... a good 85% of the second album is as well.
Apart from that, they are anything but NuMetal, as you've said.
I gave said before and I'll say it again. This is one of those songs that sounds best at absolutely ear-splitting volume....
This is the perfect example of what deftones sound really is
CHEVELLE! ANYTHING FROM "WONDER WHATS NEXT" for starters. The song " the red " is played out and not the best representation of the rest of their work not to mention the ring tone for my EX LMAO. Its another LEGIT AF 3 piece group btw

As someone that has been listening to deftones since 1996, it is so refreshing to see someone's genuine first reaction to their music. I still remember having that same feeling 30 years ago, and everytime I listen to new deftones ever since. They are mos def my favorite band, and I'm glad you enjoyed this song.

Chino is very ‘breathy’ - almost like riding a feather blowing in the wind. He is another unique voice. Rocket Skates, Change (in the house of flies), and once again I will say Passenger (I know it’s like the 3rd time I’ve mentioned)…..but Deftones definitely has a very recognizable sound. I’m glad you like it!
You've only just scratched the surface MollyBoy! This is a great song, and I don't think it would even make the top 20 list of Deftones songs for most people. They're one of just 3-4 bands from that era that are STILL putting out great music to this day.

Your reactions are the best they remind me of myself and other friends I got into nu metal back in the 90s! Where you just feel the music. This music is be shared and experienced by your generation so and so on so that it can live on! Just know my generation Gen X we were the rejects the outcast that people with status didn’t want to hang out with nu metal was our outlet where we could be who we wanted to be and say f everyone else! It Became our way of expressing ourselves through the clothes we wear the piercings and tattoos most importantly the fun we had as a way to let go of all the pain and suffering and stress! That life gave us. This music literally saved lives.

White pony album is considered their masterpiece but self titled was amazing so was Saturday night wrist. Then they moved into 7-8 strings and It changed, but not for the worse. For the record, Deftones are alt-metal. There are lots of different metal genres and some of them can be closer to each other than others. The band Deftones even stated, themselves, that they are alt-metal, not nu-metal, and that they are different things. They are close neighboring genre's, though, so I don't blame people for not knowing.
Some key differences are that alt-metal is typically more diverse and experimental. Having a high amount of slow songs and inbetween ones. Alt-metal also tends to not have as much production as nu-metal. Sounding more raw as opposed to highly produced. Nu-metal is a lot more metal-ish, as well, with mostly heavier songs. Alt-metal borders more on progressive alternative rock with a metal undercurrent.
It’s incredible how much amazing music that is out there - much of it untapped to us, as individuals. Great review and it makes me want to dive deeper into the Deftones!

You're so right about wishing you were around back then. Was lucky to be a teenager in the 90s and became an adult just before the turn of the century. The whole culture of that era including music, comedy etc felt really exciting, along with the technological revolution happening. I feel privileged to have grown up then. You're flying the flag for our favourite music, which is great to watch.

I've been listening to the Deftones for almost 20 years now. I've heard everything that they have ever produced and still to this day I rediscover tracks and I just fall in love with and play on a loop. Latest being Lhabia the one before that was Korea the one before that was Combat. Songs that I've heard probably a hundred times and just now became part of the soundtrack of my life because I love them so much all of a sudden.

I remember being 15yrs old on 1995 and staying up till 1am and seeing “Bored” on MTV, which would have NEVER been on during the day or any other time. I was a fan instantly! Never heard of them before and nobody I knew even knew of them and I had to stay up late in hopes they would play the video again so I could hear it, because it took weeks to find their album and hear it again. lol They’ve been my favorite band ever since. Deftones, STP and Alt J, are my top three bands of all time.
