Honestly, I don’t know that it would work great with Space Station Zero. Maybe along the edges of the board, but the way that the terrain is designed to make “rooms” doesn’t really fit with the Challenges in the campaign. Thanks for watching!
Works fine for Stargrave, Void Pirates, Stars, etc. Necromunda too, add some variety to your Underhive or as the interior of one of the countless wrecked ships out in the wastes. Hell, I'm sure every hive has a few defunct ships (or parts of them) integrated into their structure after they were hauled in for salvage. Not sure it's worth the money at all though. 3D printers make terrain a chump's purchase.
I just started cracking open my box and I'm doing the terrain first, I think I really do the building and modelling aspect a lot more than others do. I'm filing and sanding away all the sprue bits. I need to dry fit the terrain, I'll no doubt sand down the plastic to make it easier to work with. I really do love the idea of a Space Hulk, and it's fantastic for a tabletop setting. There can be working parts of ancient spaceships from every kind of culture and setting. There could be big stone cathedrals, green and vibrant forest areas of a colony ship, alien and cyclopean Necron bits and even some kind of flesh dungeon maze from a space whale!
Will be useful as I am going to finally try painting up my boarding action terrain! I got motivated to finally paint this stuff after getting the new boarding actions book they put out recently for 10th edition. It feels like building your own custom combat patrol for 10th edition, but with variety and unique play styles with the mini detachments.
Thanks for the review and painting tutorial, Uncle Atom! I love it when you break down how you paint things, because your style is so fast and effective. It works perfectly for a guy like me, who doesn't have very much free time to devote to the hobby. Keep up the fantastic work!
I understand make the friction based tab & slot style locking system tight, and I personally would be sanding all 4 sides of those tabs quite heavily so that they are a lot easier to put together and take apart, but making those cap pieces also such a tight friction lock is simply overkill. Those caps are mostly their to hide the connection points underneath and do not need to be friction locking let alone to that degree of friction locking to make it work for what it is really there for, making it look prettier.
I would gess that if you sand down the tabs a bit (which I plan to do), the tight-fitting cap will be the thing that actually keeps it all into place. I’m probably going to need to dry fit the whole thing before painting, as well as covering both tabs and slots in order to get a proper fit. This may prove to be quite a project…
I'm now imagining an OSHA worker just going through with a list of violations longer than a football field and they haven't even gotten past the entry way of the ship in 40k, and behind them a high lord of terra, a Custodes, and a tech preist are freaking out lol. This was a great video I haven't gotten into the terrain aspect of this hobby but I keep getting interested every time I see videos like this
Thanks a lot for showing! I filed those tabs down and also made the top tab that gets secured by the column cap a bit slimmer so there's less friction. That way, the parts go together (and come apart) much easier. A bit of extra work, but definitely worth it.
Hey Adam, thanks for the heads up on the sticking bits in the plug ins. I used a sanding block to get the walls to plug into each other easily. I wouldn't have caught that until I had it primed up. With the block sanding it goes in like a dream.
I'm pretty sure people are secretly hating those clips. Personally I think the terrain or environment is probably the most important thing, because it's the biggest and the first thing that catches your eye. so I do mine with the most detail. I also really do like the technique with the skulls. Definitely going to try that next time around. ✋
I got my hands on the box today and I'm impressed with the terrain so far. Good tip on taping the connectors, I will definitely do that although I haven't found it difficult to make any connections yet. I have noticed that some of the walls are a bit bent, if you look at them top down, they aren't 100% straight. Nice paint job. It has inspired me to not go overboard as I like the steps you followed, you could really sink a ton of time into this and its subsequent box sets if they are close to the same amount of terrain.
I found that shaving the corners off the top tabs really helps with fitting the caps. A 320 grit emery board will shave the wall tabs fairly quickly. All of my walls go together fairly smoothly.
I spent a ton of time on my Terius terrain, and I am only a third of the way through it! This will help a ton With speed painting it and maintaining the metallic looks!
I know this is a bit after the fact but I just did some sanding like you mentioned and mine goes to gether and comes apart easy. without sanding yes it's crazy tough to put it together.
I really like how you did the terrain. I originally tried to paint my Octarius terrain with a ton of detail, it took forever and I didn't even like it. Then I did something similar to your style here and loved it, plus it took WAY less time!
More Uncle Atom paint tutorials please. I like the balance you strike between time spent and finished quality, and you've got different takes on how to achieve a look or effect than what's normally out there in "paint x but FAST" type videos. see you on twitch later.
As always Adam you do an awesome job breaking down how you paint the terrain. I really like your style. I also watched GMG and he did a little bit of a Zenethal 45° spray about halfway up his walls sort of made him to town which I like also.

In old kill team. The admech & genestealer expansions came with something like this where I terrain slid together in fixed locations, would have preferred that method to this but still excited to get my hands on them.
I love seeing your quick and effective paint jobs. I'm looking forward to getting this terrain. I might saw off the tabs and magnetize everything. Also looking forward to SSZ
I will be picking up my copy of this box this weekend. I'm very excited to build the new stuff. The Corsairs aka murderous space elf pirates are my go to team, with that being said these Kroots are really drawing my eye. Fun times and much love from the land of beet, cheese and brats!
@@BB-pn2qv Sure. You need be careful with the stuff on latex sex toys, but it won't hurt styrene. You could always buy water-based lubes instead, which definitely won't hurt plastic, paint, or your skin for that matter - and they're usually cheaper, at least last time I checked. They also have some uses outside of Kill Team, and you can dedicate your purchase to Slaanesh.
I'm about to do up a table of terrain for the new place my best gal and I are moving into. Your counsel on keeping the terrain more subtle is wise, and I will take it to heart!
The idea of OSHA on Space Hulks or space ships…even the idea of an Imperial OSHA made me laugh so hard! Great video, Uncle Atom. I love your down-to-Earth honesty. Cheers!
I'm probably may get the terrain and the book seperately like I did with Killzone Chalnath so I could play a sort of Space Hulk game with Adepta Sororitas vs Chaos for a short play of Kill Team. Although, I'm more likely focused on other models and rules for other game atm, I can't say until maybe sometime next year? The terrain pieces you've built and painted has the grimmed-dark atmosphere feel there. Good paint work!
I like the quick paint job, It gives the pieces character without making them a slog project to complete. I think the new terrain is interesting, but I'm hoping GW includes a couple of unique terrain pieces for each box to help expand the repetitive contents and keep it interesting.
Hey Adam, great job on the terrain. Oickingvmy box up today hopefully. Plan is to do a super quick rattle can and dry-brush job on it, play some games and maybe - maybe - go back later and do some details.
PSA: Goonhammer said to pay attention to the doors and hinges. something about how they aren't universal and certain doors go with certain pieces. I love Dark Silver. Monument metallics are so great. It's the first time I've bought a box primarily for the terrain. Space Hulk labyrinth is so cool, and the modularity is icing. I've seen more than one review mention how tight of a fit the connecting tabs are. Recommendations have been to leave them unpainted or to scrape excess plastic off before painting for an easier fit. I'll probably go with the latter since the caps over the connection columns seem sturdy.
Late to the party, but thanks for the heads up on the terrain. I'm really interested in the newly annouced Boarding Actions Terrain set since it seems to be aimed to serve both game types (40k & KT). So far it seems the walls and the terrain are the same as the Into the Dark sets so far (maybe wider?).
I do like this direction for Kill Team. Have always wanted to make a big vertical space hulk battleboard with necromunda terrain and these would combine well. No way I would pay this much for the whole box with rules and models I'll never use, but really interested to see how this terrain will grow with the next into the dark sets, and when they put it out for individual sale.
I liked your paint job a great deal. I dremeled the clips down a little bit and now they slide in fine. The danger is that with a dremel tool you can sand it too much like I did with the first one.
Thank you for this review and tips. I like the main idea of your terrain even if I do not like your door (I will not have blue metal 🙂). Some male tabs are a little hard to insert, even unpainted. Maybe filing a little with a file could be good...
Brass and bronze flex and resonate differently from steel or iron. This is the reason for brass in modern ammunition or the historical melting of bells into cannons for the defense of Russia from Napoleon's Army. They could still have a place on a space hulk made up of ships from many eras and sources.
I spent about a week sanding down the tabs so they'd go in nice a loose. Once the top piece is on it's not going anywhere anyway so they could've made them much looser out of the box.
I’ll probably copy your painting method since it looks so good! I see this terrain great for even some warhammer rpgs like Rogue Trader or Dark Heresy!
I have seen pre-orders for the terrain and mat, which is the route that I will take for my mini agnostic games. Not interested in getting back into Kill Team and so I am unlikely to get the whole box unless it is being given away!? Love the paint job and will use some of your ideas when I get the terrain. I am in the process of setting up a dedicated games room and it looks like this terrain will be permanently set up in it?
They look great I also found that the old stuff was also hard to put together it’s almost like GW needs to make a tool like the one that Lego makes to take things apart easily. I want to get them and definitely I’ll have to sand them so I don’t brake them I sometimes get carried away with taking things apart and end up braking them a lot. I do that because of my autism and not being able to take things apart gives me anxiety 🤪
Nice paint job, quick and easy and looks good and that's all that matters.terrain suitable for lots of various games.started watching games workshop painting this terrain!! I stopped as their way you be there for a week painting.it may look great but I don't want spend that ammount of time on it.👍👍
Scuffing the paint was the first thing I wondered about when I saw the clip mechanism... little disappointed TBH, it looks cool but the connections dont seem paint friendly, might try to sand back the connections and figure out a way to magnetise them 🤔
4:25ish so archon studio's dungeons and lazers/rampart scenery would be a better buy just on the difficulty of put those together. look them up they are decently made and have has quite a few KS that were successful. they take contrast very well and they arent too bad to build. only problem is they are from the EU do shipping will be expensive as f*ck.
I’m hoping the Rampart terrain will be put into distribution here in the States, because the terrain is great. I got my KS pledge a few weeks ago, but I might want to buy more. Thanks for watching!
Yeah, Archon's prices make GW look like crooks, and while their quality is a bit lower it's not bad at all. Those big dragon kits are particularly good deals - they're cheaper than crappy WizKids plastic for their size.
Thank you for the review. I'm disappointed about how tight the terrain is. It looks frustrating to modify for different scenarios. Hesitating on pulling the trigger. Great paint job!
It definitely pays to file down some of the tabs (because those are easier to get to than the inside of the slots), so you aren't needing to man-handle the pieces every time you want to change layouts. You'd think, with products this expensive, they'd be more user friendly. Then again, this is GW we're talking about. Just look at the warped crap that comes out of Forge World. RE: Skulls - One could argue that the skulls in the control panels ARE real skulls. Because Servo-skulls. They're not free to move around, but it's the same idea. A human brain, or what's left of it, is filled with mechanical components and set into a machine to do all the calculating. Is it in any way efficient or necessary? No, but neither is most of what AdMech do. Plus, the Imperium at large is a death cult. They have a lot of skulls lying around. If they're going to decorate their stuff with skull motifs, it's arguably a better allocation of resources to use real skulls than to cast them out of metal. That's perfectly good metal, after all, whereas the Imperium has mountains of skulls that make Khorne blush. (Not that the Imperium should be confused for a place that has good resource allocation skills).
certain mechanical parts might be made from brass because as a softer metal it can act as it's own bearing, and brass doesn't spark, you would do this for the same reasons that certain machinist hammers are made out of brass.
Love your vids. By the way, thanks for the tips on painting spaceships. I wanted a guide from someone who has actually been on a spaceship / spacehulk but you will have to do! p.s.: For about 2 years I thought it was Uncle Adam!
Are the walls stackable? As in, can you create double height walls by inserting the top of one column into the bottom of another column and then slot in the walls on top of each other?
@@tabletopminions Thanks for all the content! I'll be giving these a pass for now as they don't seem designed to work with the Zone Mortalis tiles, and I'd rather spend the money on another set of the underappreciated Gang Stronghold set. Take care!
@@fantastigruff I could see picking up some cheap on the secondary market for Necromunda regardless. There are countless wrecked ships out in the wastes, and probably quite a few (or at least pieces of them) inside the hives themselves, integrated into their structures after having been dragged in for salvage.
@@richmcgee434 Definitely, but I fear they'll be in short supply. Unless all you want from the box is the Kroot team, it doesn't make much sense to buy the box only to sell the terrain.
@@fantastigruff Depends on how short they turn out to be, but there are always scalpers who buy this sort of thing just to split, just like there are always people who just want one or the other team, or just the terrain and aren't willing to wait for GW to do them individually. Might take a while for the terrain to show up at reasonable prices, but worth keeping an eye out for. Anything under $75 would be a sort-of-bargain by GW standards. Still terrible compared to terrain you can make on the cheap with a good printer, though.
The original kit is better than the GW images make them look. They're old enough to proper modular kits instead of the modern borderline push-fit junk, so much easier to pose and convert, and there are enough extra bits to make everything unique. Not as fancy as the KT ones, but very good for their age.
For that terrain, Get yourself a Dremel, and grind it out 1 mm or two to open up some spacing to refit the walls. Think ahead, because this is only the start.
It’s great to see that games workshop produces terrain addons for space station zero 😄

I wonder if they're reducing sight lines and distances to compensate for range advantage?
They look great I also found that the old stuff was also hard to put together it’s almost like GW needs to make a tool like the one that Lego makes to take things apart easily. I want to get them and definitely I’ll have to sand them so I don’t brake them I sometimes get carried away with taking things apart and end up braking them a lot. I do that because of my autism and not being able to take things apart gives me anxiety 🤪
Nice paint job, quick and easy and looks good and that's all that matters.terrain suitable for lots of various games.started watching games workshop painting this terrain!! I stopped as their way you be there for a week painting.it may look great but I don't want spend that ammount of time on it.👍👍
how about sanding those top bits and magnetizing it so the magnet is the force holding it down instead of tension?
Scuffing the paint was the first thing I wondered about when I saw the clip mechanism... little disappointed TBH, it looks cool but the connections dont seem paint friendly, might try to sand back the connections and figure out a way to magnetise them 🤔
The walls look thick enough to slip a 3mm magnet into, they should hold pretty well.
Your paint scheme is exactly how I plan to paint my terrain for all 4 of the boxes, provided it's all walls
That shirt is fantastic. Love old school godzilla stuff
Great video thanks
Vert nice video. The scenery looks fantastic. I was expecting the opposite of a tight fit.
So what about magnetizing the connection points? Wonder if anyone has done that yet?
I really liked the paint job! Those tabs seem like a huge pain.
Thank you for the review. I'm disappointed about how tight the terrain is. It looks frustrating to modify for different scenarios. Hesitating on pulling the trigger. Great paint job!
Great video as always, and I just have to say, Love the Mothra shirt mate 👍
I was really stoked for another bespoke genestealer team I hope they make one
So Dremel or cut the tabs to be a bit small it will come apart easier
What about sanding the tabs down?
certain mechanical parts might be made from brass because as a softer metal it can act as it's own bearing, and brass doesn't spark, you would do this for the same reasons that certain machinist hammers are made out of brass.
Love your vids. By the way, thanks for the tips on painting spaceships. I wanted a guide from someone who has actually been on a spaceship / spacehulk but you will have to do! p.s.: For about 2 years I thought it was Uncle Adam!
This scenery is going to be good for Space Station Zero games as well as Space Hulk and Necromunda too! IMHO
Are the walls stackable? As in, can you create double height walls by inserting the top of one column into the bottom of another column and then slot in the walls on top of each other?
Doesn’t seem to be, no. Thanks for watching!
I was never interested in kroot cause they always liked a bit underwhelming, but that kill team is really nicely sculpted
The original kit is better than the GW images make them look. They're old enough to proper modular kits instead of the modern borderline push-fit junk, so much easier to pose and convert, and there are enough extra bits to make everything unique. Not as fancy as the KT ones, but very good for their age.
The original plastic Kroot are quite nice in my opinion. They look distinct from other races, and are fun to kitbash into other thing too.
For that terrain,
Get yourself a Dremel, and grind it out 1 mm or two to open up some spacing to refit the walls. Think ahead, because this is only the start.
