    Glad your mom is doing better. I'm so glad its not just me - seems that this is a thing. The OPR games are a really decent product where rules bloat has become a barrier - a positively disruptive business model IMO. I've found myself buying more models from lots of suppliers (inc. GW, OPR Wargames Atlantic, Anvil etc) to make little teams for these games. Would love to hear more. Rock on OPR.

      Completely agreed :D

    • @NotTheStinkyCheese
      @NotTheStinkyCheese ปีที่แล้ว

      I kind of stumbled upon OPR too for much of the same reasons.
      GW aren't bad at making models, but for some reason the army lists fill with so much rules bloat that it just isn't fun.
      And to think that after 40k 8th edition I thought they had finally understood that bit ... but when 9th came along and the cycle repeated itself again I said to myself : no more.
      So yeah, OPR ... like Mantic's Deadzone/Firefight it feels kind of liberating to have a game that goes : here's the rules and here's all the factions you could possibly want.

  • @Keseleth
    @Keseleth 2 ปีที่แล้ว +88

    Yeah, I have a similar idea about my kill teams. A tip on the models: the One Page Rules fan wiki has lists of units from OPR systems and models to be used for them from GW and Mantic if one struggle with identifying the unit by name (as I sometimes do).

      Yeah, I've been a OPR Patron for about three months now, and with the discount on their MMF store from the patron I've picked up a bunch of previous stuff for cheap. Awesome minis and an awesome value. Spent this weekend printing out a ton of Jackals and Alien Hives which I am going to be using with games like Space Station Zero, 5 Parsecs from Home, Stargrave, etc.. Since the last few months releases has given me demons for four different armies I may even look into getting Reign in Hell.

    As a teacher trying to get a table top gaming club up and running at my high school this was exactly what I needed. Easy to play and being small teams/armys I can crank out a couple minis on my printer for the kids for what ever faction they want to paint/play.

    I did a similar thing.
    I played Guard all the way back in 3rd Edition 40k, took a bit of a break, and came back briefly for 5th. Most of the Cadians got sold on, but I'm left with roughly 15 or so Valhallans with a mix of Troopers, Command, Special and Heavy Weapons.
    Came across OPR and started list building with what I've got. Built up and statted everything I had.
    Then the goblin came out and I bought a box of Scions to use as Stormtroopers and a box of Orlocks to use as Veterans...
    I been eyeing up a box of Mechanicus Rangers for years but can't justify it. Yet.

    Happy to see you highlight OPR.. I'm so burnt out on 40k price hikes, release cycle and drama after decades of loving it I just don't anymore.. OPR has been filling that void and with 3d printing its easy and affordable to not only print minis to play with I can easily gift them to people I want to teach to play. Quick easy game play.. I'm loving it

    • @Dr_Disintegrator
      @Dr_Disintegrator 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great point. 3D print, quick prime job with each army in a different color and instant gift. I've often found priming in the solid color which is most predominate saves a ton of time when you do get around to painting, but also allows you to just jump in and play without tons of grey on the table.

  • @cmbunit01
    @cmbunit01 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The thing I like about the streamlined nature of GF/GFF is it still feels narratively credible. It still feels like the miniatures fit with the stat lines. The factions all feel very characterful, and the points spread between smalle specialised armies vs horde armies emphasises that. A Battle Brother force looks like a small elite force vs a Human Defence Force army.

    One thing to note is that the OPR rules include kinda focus on both GW but also Mantic Games and it's Deadlands minis, stuff like the Ratman and Dwarf Guilds. Then there's the Jackals, who were apparently Kroot but have gotten so many options I'm glad they did standalone models for them.

    OPR content is great. They've really ramped up the content they are making.
    I also like that people have started creating variants to incorporate other types of models, such as Xeno from the Alien movies.
    Will have to see if there is a Cyberpunk variant of the Grimdark Firefight ruleset, as I think it would work well.

    I am in the same boat. I got into 40k with 8th edition. I could keep up with the rules but the smaller scale games seemed a little stale. A friend and I split the Killteam starter box and played the heck out of it with some minor changes to the flesh wound system. We both ended up with 4 or 5 kill teams each. KT2021 didn't really work for us so we kept playing the old rule set. Some coworkers wanted to play and OPR really made it easy to introduce new wargamers to the hobby. We lent out teams, one guy actually glued legos to 28mm bases to use as guard. We got 4 converts out of that and even had a little competitive season over lunch hours. Big ups to One Page Rules for slim and trim easy to teach rules and fun games.

  • @genewilliamson7164
    @genewilliamson7164 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Glad to hear your mom is feeling better Uncle Atom; As for the video topic, I think the same about the New Kill Team, in The previous edition you could go after the fantastic models you wanted in your collection and use them relatively easily in your game. Forces could be mix and match with what you wanted in your team. But now you have one unit, like Tau pathfinder and that's it. I also see a lot of tournament play and as a casual gamer, I don't tend to do well in that arena. One thing I still enjoy with games like Necromunda and Warcry is the number-crunching homework before the game in trying the best combination of the choices I have, the new kill team gets rid of that, I think the number of players will start to drop as the game goes on for those reasons.

    Really happy to see you putting the spotlight on OPR! They are the answer for anyone with GW figs around and a desire to play a game that feels like 40k without sacrificing the time/money/sanity/etc required to get on the GW book-buying train and experiencing it's accompanying madness. We've largely skipped over Firefight, but Grimdark Future has allowed my son and I to dig out old 40k armies and have a blast playing "40k" with minimal fuss and maximum ease and enjoyment. I've played a number of very good 40k substitutes (Warpath Beta, Shockforce/Warengine, ITEN) over the years, but the excellent rules, accessible layout, extensive army lists, and fantastic army builder program have me completely bought-in for OPR.
    Though as you point out, not every single wargear option is represented, it's darn near complete to the point where you can thumb through the codex of virtually any 40k edition and find your unit's loadout represented exactly -or at least by it's equivalent-in-function- in the OPR army lists.
    Lastly, I might have missed it in the video, but it bears reminding that the core rules for all their systems are completely free. The "complete" rulebooks, acquired via Wargames Vault or Patreon are highly recommended, but not necessary for starting out.

    very glad to hear your mother is doing better.
    Your enthusiasm around Kill Team was one of the factors that really got me into it and I was lucky enough to have not dived too deeply before KT21 released, so i never felt that burn of having to start over. I'm quite enjoying the new edition (ESPECIALLY into the dark) and was kinda bummed that you didnt seem to like it. But I'm excited to see you find something to do with your old teams. I've heard great things about One Page Rules and a bunch of my favorite content creators have been picking them up. Seems like a great system, I'll have to give it a whirl.

    I had a look at one page rules. It seems to me they heavily leverage old 4th ed 40k. It’s good to have rules options but unless my local meta changes (which is highly unlikely), I will likely just stick with games like Frostgrave or space station zero that are even more simple and focus on getting gaming done rather than rules flipping.

    I'm curious, what is preventing you from playing Kill Team 2018 still if you enjoyed it so much? One of the things I love about tabletop games is you don't have to play the latest edition of things, and you can just stick to the versions you love instead. Is it just a shortage of people to play with? Or something more?

    Glad to hear your mom is doing better, Adam.
    Among the many things I like about GFF is that, unlike Kill Team '21, you aren't limited to the narrow pool of units you can choose from (basically just Troops choices and some rare other choices). The older version of Kill Team apparently gave you more options, but the current one is very specific, especially if your faction still uses just the compendium.
    In GFF, if you want an HQ choice, like a Space Marine Captain or a Drukhari Archon, you can. If you don't want any kind of leader figure, not even a Sergeant, that's fine too. You can freely mix and match models from many different kinds. So long as it all fits under the points you and your opponent agreed to, it lets you do it. It just works.
    That's sort of what I like about OPR. The game system just works. You aren't jumping through hoops, filing forms in triplicate just to field the units you want to field. It _empowers_ you to play what you want, rather than constraining you with arcane and multi-layered systems.

    Grim Dark Future and Age of Fantasy games are FREE. It's only the expanded rulebook that costs money (or you get it for free as a Patreon. The Patreon gives you the 3D models every month. I've been with them for over a year now and I have almost 6 armies for Grim Dark Future and about four for Age of Fantasy. Some of these model sets, like the Alien Hives, I think are just better than the GW equivelents.
    Also, you can run different point amounts for Grim Dark Future Firefight, its just they reccomend 650 or so to get started while you get used to the rules, it's nice to bump up the points to 1500 for a size closer to Kill Team or Warcry. Can't wait til all the Suarian Starhost set is complete. Common, space lizards in power armor?; it's a no-brainer, lol.

    Not all their armies are GW inspired as far as I know, beyond their STL armies that is. Heck I think there's even a "make your own army" builder if you are a patron (As in, make the rules and units, and it calculate the points)
    That's the beauty of the One Page Rules games, it's made so anyone who owns some models can play with anyone who owns some models.

      Can confirm the custom army builder, I'm using it to make various heroes and characters for established armies. They are revising it and will soon release a 2.0 version.

    While I'm busy selling off all my 40K models (and boy does it feel amazing!) I cannot put into words how much I encourage people to look outside of GW and major main stream games. There are just sooooo many fantastic (and far better/more enjoyable) games out there.. Your miniatures deserve better.

    I would like to add to this video by saying 250 points hence (4-6 units) is just the recommended starting point and not a limit. Especially if you play on the intended 4x4 table you will feel like it is a little too sparse. So I even suggest to play on a 3x3, 2x2 or the kill team board with these starting teams.
    Another point I would like to add is that GFF is a little swingy at times, resulting in your troops dying faster than you might expect. That is why it is not advised to spend a lot of points on units that are either not a unit of 3 models or have the tough keyword.

    • @tabletopminions
      @tabletopminions  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My plan was to stick to 3x3 areas - and yes, I’ve noticed that spending big points on a figure without a high ‘Tough’ stat is a good way to lose a bunch of points quickly. Thanks for watching!

    OPR is so cool, after years of pain with GW, I have fun again playing with my modells.

    Adam, not to mention you can actually have more than one group under your army, just add an additional army book in the OPR WebApp beta builder - you can have combined forces/kill team with unlikely allies. For example, an Inquisitorial retinue with Inquisitor, an IG sergeant, an Aeldari ranger, an Ogryn, etc. Really thematic!

    I'm glad to hear your mother, is doing better, thanks for this video, I don't know 2018 kill team, I just approached it, and I really like it, but my life mate says, for her is a little bit too "strategic", and as you said in another video I didn't push, but maybe with the one page rules, everything will be simpler, I'll try. Thank you

    "I don't know.. its scifi man."
    Can someone print this on Tshirt please?
    One Page Rules is quite amazing. They also have their own answer to Necromunda (that is much more streamlined) and a decent AI ruleset for solo gaming.
    I would love to see more content on One Page Rules!

    First of all: So glad your mother is getting better.
    I really love Onepagerules, and I really can't praise their patreon program high enough. For 10 bucks a month, you get a metric ton of STL files with very good models. I just printed a Jackals army (what would be Kroot in 40k, but much nicer if you ask me - they have a whole army list on their own in Grimdark Future, and the models are very cool!) and it is a blast painting them, can't wait to field them in Grimdark Future.
    My only regret with the patreon is that I didn't get it sooner. Honestly, get that patreon. Even if you don't have a 3D-Printer yet - you can just get the patreon, recieve a very decent amount of model files every month, and if you decide to get a printer eventually, you have a huge collection to start printing from the start. I recommend to check it out at least. (Not to mention that the game Grimdark Future / Age of Fantasy are so much more fun than Warhammer 40k / Age of Sigmar... At least if you are like me or apparently Uncle Atom, and you like your games easy, neat and streamlined...)

    What I liked about KT18 was that it was 40k lite. It was a great way to get used to 40k’s ruleset.

    Thanks for this, I've never really investigated one page rules, but now I will.
    I've been playing Epic for the last decade or so and thought I was done with GW.
    Until my friend said "so, Necromunda..."
    Now in the process of kitbashing my AdMech to use as a Van Saar gang, I've rediscovered the joy of working with models and terrain at this scale.

    Open Model Game Systems like Space Station Zero, Stargrave, Zone Raiders, and so on are a perfect use for models that don't get used anymore like from board games you don't play but liked the models, wargames you don't play anymore, or just randoms you picked up to paint and have laying around.

    I'm so happy you discovered OnePageRules! I just started playing with my daughter. Absolutely fantastic set of rules. We use mixture of GW models (for Battle Brothers), and some 3D printed GrimGuard. I love the freedom that game gives me. :)

    Glad to hear she's doing better! I feel the same about KT 21 vs. KT 18. I tried KT 21 for the first time just a couple weeks ago and it's just a bit too arcadey/boardgamey and more restrictive feeling than KT 18 for me. I might try it a bit more in the future but only because that's the only skirmish gaming scene in my area unfortunately.
