      It's a little harder for Spanish speakers to understand Portuguese than the opposite because Portuguese has more sounds and vowels.

    • @guillermorivas7819
      @guillermorivas7819 6 ปีที่แล้ว +305

      Exactly. And the reason for this is because Brazilian/Portuguese speakers are much more exposed to the Spanish language through music, soap operas, and movies DUE to Spanish being widely spoken and known in the world.
      This is not the case with Spanish/Latino speakers as we're more interested learning English above all. Although the Spanish-speaking countries surrounding Brazil are somewhat exposed to Portuguese/Brazilian language.

    • @frapiment6239
      @frapiment6239 6 ปีที่แล้ว +667

      No, not really the reason its because the phonetic of Portuguese is much more rich than the spanish or Italian for example. All the vowels "a, e, i o, u" can be prononce in several ways depending on the position in the word the same as in French but not in Spanhish or Italian. So Spanish and Italians can read Portuguese but when it come to understand it spoken it's very difficult if not almost impossible.

    • @guillermorivas7819
      @guillermorivas7819 6 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      You've essentially reinforced my point. My argument is due to cultural popularity of Spanish whereas your argument is based on the linguistic simplicity of Spanish. Yes, you're right about Spanish/Italian possessing simpler phonetic sounds of A, E, I, O, and U.
      I can understand written Portuguese by 80-90% but there are a few words like described in this video that Spanish speakers would have no clue what it means. Not to mention the false friends. In another post that I made, I said that the Peruvian speaker in this video has studied the Portuguese/Brazilian language beforehand since she got all of it correct.

      Guillermo Rivas, I'm Brazilian and I don't agree with you. The truth is that we have little contact with Spanish Language. Few songs and films of the Spanish language arrive here. What arrives here, like the Mexican series, are dubbed in Portuguese.
      The reason that a native Portuguese speaker, understands Spanish better, is because the Portuguese phonology's is more complex, with many sounds that the Spanish language doesn't have.

      Explaining my commentary: Brazilian Portuguese is pretty different from the one spoken in Europe. Our country receive a really large number of Italian immigrants. Their influence end up changing our accents, pronounce, expressions and even how words are spelled. For that reason I think the comparison between the Portuguese language spoken here, and Italian would highlight even more similarities, although European Portuguese is pretty similar to Italian too.

    The reason why a Portuguese speaker is easier to understand Spanish than the other way around is because Portuguese has all the Spanish phonemes and the extra phonemes. Even some Hispanic words sound, to a Portuguese speaker, like "a Portuguese not fully pronounced." This is why it is much easier for a lusophone speaker to deduce Spanish words without even knowing them.

Being able to speak Spanish allow you to communicate in all the countries where people speak Portuguese, mainly Portugal, Brazil and part of Africa... which you won't be able to do the other way around... (I mean if you speak Portuguese and try to communicate in a Spanish speaking country).

      The influence is from Portuguese because the Portuguese language was used to trade throughout the archipelago from sixteenth century to early nineteen century. The Portuguese were one of westerners who sailed to Indonesia for spices. It is also recorded in Indonesian history that the Portuguese may have colonialized Indonesia for a short time before the Dutch colonialism.

      European Portuguese spoken from the mouth of an educated person actually sounds beautiful, no kidding. In Portugal I conversed with many Portuguese, and I was blown away by how well enunciated and clearly they spoke. Often times mutual intelligibility has to do with who is doing the talking and who is doing the listening. I could say a sentence that is 100% intelligible to a Spanish speaker, and I can also say that sentence in a way that would not be intelligible.

      Newsflash: All over the Internet you will find comments from Spanish speakers that to their ears, the European Portuguese accent not only sounds nicer, but that it is also more intelligible. You will also find comments by a fair number of Hispanics that they dislike the Brazilian accent because it is too 'overbearing', 'too-much', 'over-the-top'. Just saying.

      Lion KingYou're right. It's different family group. But I know we have a lot of common words with Persian. When Assyrian genocide took place at the hands of the Ottoman Turks and Kurdish tribes, we were so close to being completely wiped out. It was the Persians who stepped in and saved so many Assyrian Christians. My great grandparents were among them, they settled in Persia (Iran) and lived very comfortably. So I have always been intrigued with the Iranian culture. I can't speak Persian well, but my parents do, they grew up in Iran, and I have a lot of Persian friends so I have come to notice the common words. I've even found out that some Persian words from Middle Persian are in the Assyrian language, even though they are no longer used in New Persian.

    The main difficulty for Spanish speakers when learning Portuguese it is not about the language structure (which is nearly the same as Spanish), but the pronunciation.
    I teach Portuguese to Spanish speakers and I spend longer training their pronunciation than grammar.
    The only tip I give them regarding grammar is to conjugate verbs as "usted" which is equivalent to "você" - as we use no "tu" in Brazilian Portuguese.

      Der Füsch aus der Industrie
      European Portuguese and Slavic languages have the same phonetics. In Portugal, Russian speaking people learn the language quite easily. English speaking people don't use many of the sounds used in Portuguese, so they have a bit more difficulty. I'm from Croatia. I speak several languages including Portuguese, Spanish, French, English, German, and of course Croatian, my native language. Languages are my passion. To me, Portuguese is the most beautiful language in the world. European Portuguese is sexy as fuck, it's a perversion for my ears. 😊Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes once called Portuguese "the sweet and gracious language" and Spanish playwright Lope de Vega referred to it as "sweet", while the Brazilian writer Olavo Bilac poetically described it as "a última flor do Lácio, inculta e bela" (the last flower of Latium, rustic and beautiful). Portuguese is also termed "the language of Camões", after one of the greatest literary figures in the Portuguese language, Luís Vaz de Camões.

      Der Füsch aus der Industrie
      Arabic language had a huge influence on the European Portuguese. The Moors ruled in the Iberian peninsula for five hundred years. Brazilian Portuguese was influenced by African languages, Indian languages, Italian, French, Spanish, German and Slavic languages. About 5 million people from over 60 countries migrated to Brazil between 1808 and 1972, most of them of Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, German, Ukrainian, Polish, Jewish, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, and Arab origin. These numbers are huge now because in Brazil live first, second, third and fourth generations of immigrants.

      I'm from Croatia. I speak several languages including Portuguese, Spanish, French, English, German, and of course Croatian, my native language. Languages are my passion. Arabic and Turkish are next on my wish list. Portuguese, Arabic and Turkish have always been my favorite languages. Arabic language is music to my ears. 🥰 When I was 8 years old, I heard (Egyptian) Arabic for the first time in my life on television and I fell in love. From an early age I was fascinated by Arab culture, architecture, customs, music and language. Arabic language is melodious and magical. I'm obsessed with that language since childhood. Arabic sounds like a beautiful bedtime story. Arabic is the richest language in the world, with over 4.5 million words, compared to 1.5 million in English. Arabic language is melodious, exotic, sexy, sensual, romantic, passionate, gentle and aggressive at the same time. Arabic is sexy as fuck, it's a perversion for my ears. 😊 In my opinion, Levantine Arabic and Gulf Arabic are the most beautiful Arabic dialects. Lebanese Arabic and Emirati Dialect are my favorites. Arabic music is my drug. 😊
      Arabic language had a huge influence on the European Portuguese. The Moors ruled in the Iberian peninsula for five hundred years. The Spanish language has 4000 words of Arabic origin, and the European Portuguese has 8000. In our language we have 3,000 Arabic words.
      ARABIC - MOST BEAUTIFUL WRITTEN LANGUAGE
      To the eyes of a reader accustomed to the classical Latin or Roman alphabet, the Arabic script with its artful and cursive calligraphy is akin to an elaborate ornament rather than writing. Written from right to left, without distinct upper or lower case letters, Arabic script seems to flow on endlessly, in a truly mesmerising fashion. It is not surprising that Arabic calligraphy is venerated as a form of religious art and hand stitched and painted on holy objects or places.

    I only nedeed to study 2 months to get 90% of a portuguese video, it took me more time to discover that kkkk is a jajaja.
    Well also the verb "ter", it takes the place of "haber" in several cases, but nothing far from impossible.
    Mas eu acho que o português é um ótimo idioma; embora, eu ainda não termino de aprender-lo. Com sorte algum dia vou visitar o Brasil ou Portugal.

    They had more troubles trying to translate to english, than understandingg themselves, you should have let them talk in their languages to transmit the message

    Entender espanhol, pra quem fala português, se torna infinitamente mais fácil quando vc tem um vocabulário amplo de palavras, pq muitas palavras usadas no espanhol, são palavras q constam no dicionário da língua portuguesa e muitas já foram inclusive usadas aqui no passado.
